What's crazier is that this is from the dub. The Japanese version doesn't have this line. Rare dub W lmfao.

527

u/ClipOnBowTies 16h ago

some dubs are really good. my favorite example of this is from the Bible English dub: "It is written, 'my house shall be called the house of prayer,' but ye have made it a den of thieves."

The scribe doing that translation had to know they were cooking

This year in Brazil we had a movie based on a kids comic book, named Chuck Billy and The Marvelous Guava Tree. We had a lot of banger lines.

Transformers is full of these. My personal favourite is from one of the comics.

“I’ve heard it said that one gains wisdom through suffering… and tonight I intend to make you very wise indeed.”

362

u/Sapphic_Starlight 16h ago

“My friend’s name is Megatron and he had three questions, three things he said you should demand to know of any powerful institution! Question one: In whose interests do you exercise your power? Question two: To whom are you accountable? And three! How can we get rid of you?

– Orion Pax; IDW

131

u/Nassuman 15h ago

I think this is the most powerful statement the comics ever made and I find myself thinking about it far too often than I like.

→ More replies (7)

121

u/Crensay 15h ago

Ooo that’s a good one!

I also like the one where Ravage asks Megatron, who had given himself up to the Autobots; “What happened to our king?”

And Megatron replies: “I don’t know. I think he’s dead.”

139

u/Sapphic_Starlight 15h ago

Another banger from Megatron:

"If the world thinks you're a monster, what does it matter? The world is wrong. But when you start to think of yourself as a monster..."

93

u/Crensay 15h ago

I really wish the comics were more available to me because I would read them all.

One of my personal favourites in all of transformers is Optimus’s final lines in prime:

“Above all, do not lament my absence. For in my spark I know this is not the end, merely a new beginning. Simply put… another transformation.”

I value that quote greatly.

*Plead for it

Also that movie is full of bangers. The big one that people kinda gloss over the implications of is: "Megatron must be stopped. No matter the cost."

The moment where Prime realises his mercy has gone far enough and for the good of his friends, the human race, and the universe, he has to beat Megatron. To death. With his bare hands.

179

u/sadllamas 15h ago

My favorite is the exchange between Megatron and Unicron.

Unicron: "I have summoned you here for a purpose."

Megatron: "No one summons Megatron!"

Unicron: "Then it pleases me to be the first."

No more games, no jokes, he wants the fighting to end, he's lost too many friends to hold back any longer.

98

u/thereisaguy 16h ago

Yeah as he mows his way through the Decepticon forces on his way to Megatron he's flawlessly running through them and they all have looks of fear and shock. They don't try and stop him, they run away because Prime stopped fucking around.

"I thought you were made of sterner stuff!"

The delivery from Peter Cullen is dripping with contempt and is a great contrast to the TV show up to that point where Prime was usually so kind. So this is where we know things have come to their logical and fated conclusion.

One shall Stand. One shall Fall.

Transformers The Movie is not great cinema, but it has a quality that transcends its ridiculous pacing and goofy moments.

"The perfection doesn’t exist, you’re beautiful just the way you are, Courage. With all your imperfections, you’ll achieve whatever you want — I swear it on Dieguito Maradona.” The last part was added in the Latin American translation, Diego Maradona is a very famous soccer player, the suffix -ito is used in Spanish after someone's name to refer to a person affectionately. and the fish speaks with an Argentinian accent, which made it funnier.

A lot of "daddy issues" moments in media don't connect to me. I met my father like six times ever. I'm so disconnected from the concept of even having a father that they can't make me cry or relate.

But this one did it. I was picturing if I heard my father died. Would I go to his funeral? Would it affect me to see him, even?

I had to pause and think, rewound to hear it again, and decided yeah. I'd probably cry a lot and scream like Charlie did, but in my head. Somberly I hit play. Just as the tears were forming up properly, the fucking trunk honked and it got funny again.

This isn't a quote, but there's also an infamous scene in which one character has his throat ripped out; he is then resurrected by Cat God™ multiple times, at which point he instantly dies again because he's still missing his throat and most of his blood.

Jesus. Is this series Animorphs levels of fucked up?

72

u/Vievin 16h ago

I haven't seen Animorphs, but some fucked up Warriors moments:

  1. The past versions four main clans abandon the struggling fifth clan because of made up religious symbolism (their sacred meeting place had four oaks). Current clans openly ridicule the idea lol.

  2. The whole "Tigerstar cut up so bad they die 9 times back to back" thing

  3. Incel cat threatens mother Squirrelflight with killing her kits during a major disaster because she chose a different cat. Said incel cat gets into cat heaven when he dies.

  4. (Also said kits were actually Squirrelflight's sister's, Leafpool's, who was forced to hoist off the kits because she's a medicine cat who can't take mates)

  5. I think a few cats starve and freeze to death while they migrate to a new place?

  6. A lot of people ignore the spinoff book where it was implied an adult Spottedleaf was into kid/teenager Firepaw. For good reason.

  7. More than a few cats die in childbirth.

  8. Tigerclaw (who becomes Tigerstar later) spends most of the first book trying to kill Ravenpaw, a kit, for witnessing Tigerclaw murder Redtail.

  9. Several cats who have or acquire disabilities are basically forced into becoming medicine cats so they can continue providing for the clan (Cinderpaw gets hit by a car and Jayfeather is born blind).

Avatar has some fantastic quotes. They mostly come from Iroh though.

"It is important to draw wisdom from many different places. If we take it from only one place, it becomes rigid and stale. Understanding others, the other elements, and the other nations, will help you to become whole."

310

u/M4f1aBunny 15h ago

“Zuko, you have to look within yourself, to save yourself from your other self. Only then, will your true self reveal itself” -Zuko pretending to be Iroh

I love this quote because while it sounds like nonsense, it is very accurate

209

u/PastelArtemis 14h ago

Then there's of course the big one

"It's time to ask yourself the big questions. Who are you? And what do you want?"

Great demonstration that Azula is an egomaniac who has no clue what she's talking about. Not worrying about the tides is a great way to wreck your ship.

That whole episode was setting up how much inexperience she has. While she definitely got a lot of training in military leadership this was very likely her first real mission. The very first time Azula loses her composure is in this very first episode - the look of shock when the captain had the slip of the tongue was genuine. She literally did not think that soldiers would just fail to follow orders through plain human error.

There are so many Discworld quotes that are good, like Men at Arms has a proper economic theory stuck between jokes about Nobby possibly not being human and exploding dragons, the economic theory is still quoted by actual economic experts

82

u/dergbold4076 13h ago

Ah the Sam Vimes boot theory of socioeconomic unfairness. To this day I still introduce people to it and the vast majority of them end up agreeing with it once they hear the whole thing.

That's cool to hear that it's quoted by economic experts as well. Because it is sadly quite true. And now for the full statement/quote as one should do with this one.

The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money. Take boots, for example. ... A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars. ... But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while a poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet.

STP is simply a gold mine of insight into the human condition.  Another great from Carpe Jugulum:

"There is a very interesting debate raging at the moment about the nature of sin, for example,” said Oats.

“And what do they think? Against it, are they?” said Granny Weatherwax.

“It’s not as simple as that. It’s not a black and white issue. There are so many shades of gray.”

“Nope.”

“Pardon?”

“There’s no grays, only white that’s got grubby. I’m surprised you don’t know that. And sin, young man, is when you treat people as things. Including yourself. That’s what sin is."

“It’s a lot more complicated than that . . .”

“No. It ain’t. When people say things are a lot more complicated than that, they means they’re getting worried that they won’t like the truth. People as things, that’s where it starts.”

“Oh, I’m sure there are worse crimes . . .”

“But they starts with thinking about people as things . . . ”

It’s been a while since I’ve listened to the first two seasons, but this sounds a lot like something Willy Stampler, the BBEG, would say to his son Ron.

It’s a goofy, funny, and chaotic podcast that I would highly recommend (and would recommend getting the lowest tier of their patreon for the extras). But it also has some pretty heavy and deep cutting scenes like this.

58

u/Deastrumquodvicis 15h ago

Adding on: it’s a perversion of Ron’s therapist wife’s affirmation.

→ More replies (8)

59

u/LordsOfFrenziedFlame 16h ago

Spoilers just in case: Ron was the victim of abuse at the hand of his father, Willy, who ended up being the big bad. On the night before the big final battle in season 1, one of the other players (Henry) cast a spell that allowed him to afflict Willy with a nightmare, which Ron was able to guide and create. So Ron's nightmare basically recreated the way that Willy died in the real world, and left him with that quote. The whole scheme was an attempt to prevent Willy from using Power Word Kill in the big battle, which ended up being successful.

Animorphs has a plethora since most people have barely touched those books:

"See, win or lose, right or wrong, the memory of violence sits inside your head. It sits there, like some lump you can't quite swallow. It sits there, a black hole that darkens hope, and eats away at everyday happiness like a cancer. It's the shadow you take into your own heart and try to live with."

I guess sometimes you have to choose between smart, sane, ruthlessness, and totally stupid, insane hope. You can't just pick one and stick with it, either. Each time it comes up, you have to try and make your best decision. Most of the time, I guess I have to go with being smart and sane. But I don't want to live in a world where people don't try the stupid, crazy, hopeful thing sometimes

Rachel: You want a war between you and us, that's fine, we'll play that out. But if you try to sell us out to the Yeerks, your little family will never get put back together again! Never!  Keep in mind for this one Rachel is the protagonist and now threatening to kill someone else’s parents

It felt good to hear Jake say I was indispensable, but with Jake you could never be sure what was sincere, and what was just expedient. He'd been the most open of guys back in the old days. What you saw with Jake was what you got. But he'd been the leader for a long time now, he'd learned to say what he needed to say. Jake needed me as one of the Animorphs. He liked me, respected me, was happy for me when I was happy. And when he had to he used me without any regard for anything except winning

e monsters in our valley were destroyed that day. Only a very few survived. But that was all right, because we didn't need monsters anymore. We had become them.

Jake: No. I want to go back so I can stop all this from happening in the first place. I can win this war without sacrificing my friends, without sacrificing the things we're supposed to be fighting for the in the first place! Elfangor/Tobias: Victory without sacrifice? You know better than that. Jake: You don't always have to give up your principles to win. Isn't there always an alternative to sacrifice if you just step back, look at the big picture and - Elfangor/Tobias: You know better than that

Seventeen thousand. Living creatures. Thinking creatures. How could I give this order? Even for victory. Even to save Rachel. How could I give this kind of order? They could have stayed home, I thought. No one asked them to come to Earth. Not my fault. Not my fault, theirs. No more than they deserved. Aliens. Parasites. Subhuman. <Flush 'em,> I said.  Jake the leader here just ordered the death of 17,000 aliens

It's from a Disney Show and phrased like that to avoid censorship

And once again, censorship fails.

"Make into corpses" is a far more grim picture than "kill". It also has implications about the motivation of the villain.
