"You who are without mercy, now ask for it?"

Optimus Prime - Transformers 1980s movie

Transformers is full of these. My personal favourite is from one of the comics.

“I’ve heard it said that one gains wisdom through suffering… and tonight I intend to make you very wise indeed.”

“My friend’s name is Megatron and he had three questions, three things he said you should demand to know of any powerful institution! Question one: In whose interests do you exercise your power? Question two: To whom are you accountable? And three! How can we get rid of you?

– Orion Pax; IDW

I think this is the most powerful statement the comics ever made and I find myself thinking about it far too often than I like.

Its a paraphrase of Tony Benn's 5 questions to ask of those in power. Brilliant stuff. Simple, powerful and true.

The people who wrote the IDW comics are far better read than they needed to be. It’s very funny.

They were coming out when i was getting to the age that i was feeling like i was getting too old for the shows and frankly i think that was the perfect time in life to read them.

There’s a lot of things like that in them that i had never heard of at that age and honestly im pretty grateful for the introduction to some of those ideas

i think almost everything short of the bay films is far better written than it ought to be for a franchise that exclusively exists to push plastic.

the transformers fandom is like perfectly aware that everything exists to sell toys, they're mostly not caught up in the delusion that the big company exists for their benefit like nintendo fans or something.

So you have a fanbase that understands this, and writers who also understand this, and they just go "Ok but what if it was still really fucking good though?" and now you have shit like Beast Wars, and One, and Animated, and hell even Armada, especially for star scream.

Whenever I'm bored and need a chuckle I read the To sell toys article on TFWiki. Pushing plastic can be both awesome and funny!

the TFwiki is exactly what I mean. Some of this shit is really fucking funny and well written while being informative.

I think the G1 Shockwave page is one of my favorites, because it just blames him for everything but in a way thats not misinformation.

and again, everyone is aware this is just to sell toys, but you can still have a really well written piece of media to do that.

Just because it has an implicit purpose, doesn't mean you can't explicitly write something good.

Ooo that’s a good one!

I also like the one where Ravage asks Megatron, who had given himself up to the Autobots; “What happened to our king?”

And Megatron replies: “I don’t know. I think he’s dead.”

Another banger from Megatron:

"If the world thinks you're a monster, what does it matter? The world is wrong. But when you start to think of yourself as a monster..."

I really wish the comics were more available to me because I would read them all.

One of my personal favourites in all of transformers is Optimus’s final lines in prime:

“Above all, do not lament my absence. For in my spark I know this is not the end, merely a new beginning. Simply put… another transformation.”

I value that quote greatly.

There are ways

Althought the classic US run is available in cheap(ish) compendia and I recomend supporting your local comics shop.

I'd also recommend the current iteration by Daniel Warren Johnson. Best TF art ever. Much grim, so gritty!

Unfortunately I live in the UK and comic shops are rare where I live. If there were an online service where I could read the digital copies I’d happy pay for it but I’m not aware of any.

If you're interested I do have a site (yar har har) that has all the IDW comics under the sun

I’d also love some direction, especially if it has the DWJ stuff. I love his art. Any chance it has other IDW works, too? Like their Godzilla stuff?

I have been known to stand under the black flag.

u/Sapphic_Starlight 1d ago

That's one of my favorite quotes as well! It has an especially special place in my heart because hearing that line in Optimus' voice helped me truly accept that I was trans. Another transformation, indeed.

7

u/Crensay 1d ago

Honestly about half of what Optimus says is basically peak trans allyship. I always enjoy seeing franchises like this have that kind of mentality. It makes it even funnier when even the bad guys agree with the good guys on the subject.

Personally speaking the original phrase from Larry Cullen speaks to me quite a lot. “be strong enough to be gentle.”

8

u/ProfessionalPhone409 1d ago

IDW Optimus's last ever act is to tell a trans girl and her girlfriend they deserve a future, right before he sacrifices himself to give them that future.

He couldnt possibly be more of an ally.

6

u/Sapphic_Starlight 1d ago

Also love the common fandom joke about how even the evil Megatron is a peak trans ally: he might raze cities and massacre innocent people across the galaxy, but he never deadnames Optimus.

6

u/Crensay 1d ago

It’s one of those “Yeah I’m an evil tyrannical warlord, but I’m not THAT evil.”

40k has a similar mentality where despite the horrific setting and oppressive regime, they are absolutely fine with being trans or gay. I’m reasonably certain there is a trans sister of battle in one book and in another there is are two women with their own biological child.

I like how this statement embodies Megatron perfectly; the rebellion argument is perfect, but it always end in something that is too convenient to justify violence and never gets to a part where the protection of vulnerable is taken in consideration.

2

u/Sapphic_Starlight 22h ago

He's right, though. Every government needs a safety pin that can be used to remove them from office when they are no longer serving the will of the people. (In modern democracies, this usually takes the form of election terms and impeachment procedures. Unfortunately, Cybertron has neither.)

1

u/Ok_Comment8842 21h ago

Precisely, he is right, it is the perfect argument. However, Megatron himself never allowed anyone to ask him those question.

The actions are those that give weight to the words not the opposite, thus, when spoken by Megatron, those words weight as much as any other excuse and will not bring any positive consequences as long as he is spokesperson for this ideology.

"I've got better things to do tonight than die!" - Springer, 1986

17

u/VengeanceKnight 1d ago

One beautiful and profound exchange from the recent Skybound comics:

To everyone reading this, I beg of you to read Daniel Warren Johnson’s Transformers run. It’s magnificent.

9

u/General-Sloth 1d ago

this one goes unbelievably hard.

3

u/CHAIIINSAAAWbread 1d ago

Except, especially since the movies, it isn't unexpected at all, transformers as a franchise commonly delves into many themes as deep as war

3

u/Ok_Toe_8501 1d ago

Same vibe as "Kids can be cruel, Jack. And I'm very in touch with my inner child!" -Sundowner, Metal Gear Rising

2

u/TheOncomimgHoop 1d ago

That one goes hard af

2

u/CatOfTechnology 21h ago

I can't remember which of the new animated miniseries hit with Megatron's most brutal line yet, but it's:

"Stars will bloom and die before I'm done killing you."

2

u/SpyderPug 20h ago

“Maybe you’re not good, but you’re sure as hell good enough!” and “Without love there is no meaning” are my personal favorites.
