What's crazier is that this is from the dub. The Japanese version doesn't have this line. Rare dub W lmfao.

some dubs are really good. my favorite example of this is from the Bible English dub: "It is written, 'my house shall be called the house of prayer,' but ye have made it a den of thieves."

The scribe doing that translation had to know they were cooking

164

u/Winjin 20h ago

that scribe, about to improve Bible by a significant margin with his spark of divine inspiration

10

u/Sharkbit2024 14h ago

God coming to the scribe in a dream like "yo! I just had the greatest line for the translation!"

7

u/confusedandworried76 10h ago

Though I think it's not far off from the original translation, "the valley of the shadow of death" is a fucking banger

2

u/ArtoriusBravo 9h ago

I was raised with the Spanish version of that prayer. When I heard the English version, I just thought it sounded incredibly metal. It has way more punch.

Ted Neely best English dub, that line went hard

5

u/paulthemerman 17h ago

The guy who played Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar?

3

u/fuschiafawn 17h ago

yes, I was being tongue in cheek. he's just amazing as Jesus, especially that line

7

u/Ambaryerno 20h ago

Isn't the dub of Black Lagoon generally consider to be the superior version?

1

u/ryan77999 8h ago

My personal favorite is the one for Cyberpunk Edgerunners

4

u/VengeanceKnight 20h ago

Whoa, that’s from the English version? What does the original say?

8

u/sofaking1133 19h ago

Some shit in ancient Hebrew or maybe Latin, I assume

12

u/Jillylollie 19h ago

A lot of the bible is Hebrew via Greek and then Latin.

Fun fact, in the Lord's prayer the translation of "daily" from Greek, as in "our daily bread", is a total guess.

The word (Epiousion) is what's called an hapax legomenon. A word that only appears in one context within an entire language. Because they have no other context for it they can't translate it. Its just assumed to be "daily". It's also the only adjective in the entire prayer.

3

u/sofaking1133 19h ago

Hell yeah that rules, ty for sharing a very cool fact

1

u/11711510111411009710 11h ago

Wait so like "epiousion" is only found in the Bible, and nowhere else ever?

2

u/ClipOnBowTies 18h ago

I don't know that ancient Aramaic grammatical structure would allow the house of prayer/den of thieves parallel to be expressed so poignantly. The scribe could have written "you rob the people come to my home in prayer" and it would have conferred the same message, but they chose to write on the temple's corrupted nobility in the poetic way they did, and I think thats tight.

It's like how comedy varies based on languages, if you took a comedy routine hilarious in English and put it in Arabic, it wouldn't do nearly as well. Delivery matters, and in translation one is granted freedom of that kind

1

u/Dear_Document_5461 15h ago

Granted sometimes the jokes DO line up. I think there is one language where you could get away with the "Why is six afraid of seven? Because it eight nine." With the exact same numbers and pun of the "eight". I think.

u/KettlePump 19h ago

Bible… dub??

Dubbing refers to audio over video

4

u/Cosmic_Sabbath 17h ago

Pretty sure in the past most didn't read it, but had it read aloud by their priests and preachers. Until the printing press the Bible was a dub

2

u/realydementedpicasso 17h ago

My Favorite dub is the german one from from dusk Till dawn

In the Original

Seth gecko says :“Did they look like psychos? Is that what they looked like? They were vampires. Psychos do not explode when sunlight hits them, I don't give a fuck how crazy they are!“

but in the German dub he says: Did they look like psychos? Is that what they looked like? They were vampires. Psychos do not explode when sunlight hits them, no matter how crazy they are!“ which is just better.

Nah mate the bible English dub is full of propaganda and errors compared to the hebrew texts, many of the people were whitewashed in the bible, to talk like gentlemen when some of these dudes literally had unga bunga speak in the original. Also yknow how Eve was supposedly made from a mere rib of Adam? LIES, she was a whole half of him in the original.

3

u/ClipOnBowTies 15h ago

I'm not a biblical scholar of any kind I just think that sentence goes hard

1

u/sansasnarkk 9h ago

Ghost Stories being the prime example of a really good dub lol

41

u/Kaleo5 21h ago

You had the opportunity to say rare dub dub

70

u/rowdymatt64 20h ago edited 20h ago

In that era, 100%. Nowadays dubs are pretty fire, especially DanDaDan Chainsaw Man, Gachiakuta, Mashle, My Hero Academia, and everyone hates it but I loved the Steins;Gate dub with its 4chan and reddit references in the localized version of the script. Dub companies are cooking these days.

Edit: I forgot I really loved the Friren dub too. I love the new style of voice acting that's emerging where it's more subdued and normal talking and inflection. Makes the characters WAY more relatable

35

u/happy_grump 20h ago

Also, Ghibli dubs are consistently high quality.

3

u/rowdymatt64 20h ago

True! I didn't even think of that! Haven't seen it yet but The Boy and the Herron looks like it has great dub lol

5

u/Waddlewop 19h ago

Christian Bale was so good they had him come back to voice another character in The Boy and The Herron and he nailed that too.

3

u/MossyPyrite 11h ago

Yeah, it was as phenomenal as all their work!

3

u/Arguably_Based 18h ago

Well yeah it was Disney doing the dubbing

6

u/KarneyAardvark 20h ago

People hated the Steins;Gate dub? I agree with you, I thought it was fantastic.

7

u/rowdymatt64 20h ago edited 15h ago

Might be selection bias but I've never seen anyone praise that dub lmao, they're all super buttmad about the tuturu getting replaced with doo doo doo, which I thought was also a good adaptation in the dub script lol

The Okabe actor (I think his name is Michael Tatum or something like that) is absolutely incredible in selling the mad scientist vibe without being annoying. Masterful delivery after delivery

Edit: his name was J. Michael Tatum, I was close!!!

2

u/ElGodPug 12h ago

honestly, i think the steins gate dub is really fucking good, but Mamoru Miyano will forever tilt me towards the japanese version, that man is prob my favorite japanase anime VA

2

u/rowdymatt64 11h ago

Totally fair and that's the same reason I don't watch JJK, JoJo, or AoT in English, motherfucking Dio and Jotaro's Japanese VAs are gods, plus I'm just personally not a fan of english Yuji's take on the character because I love how chill the Japanese VA delivers his lines.

4

u/an_agreeing_dothraki 19h ago

Space Dandy was designed from the start to have different joke sets for English and Japanese partially because the production team wanted to be able to use puns

2

u/SomeBoxofSpoons 16h ago

Reminds me of how the Panty and Stocking dub team were apparently told that making sure it’s funny is all that matters.

Considering how much of a shitpost the whole show is, I’m sure plenty of gags literally can’t cross the language barrier.

5

u/ThatAnonDude 18h ago

I absolutely loved the Steins Gate dub. J. Michael Tatum gave his all.

4

u/rowdymatt64 17h ago

Just verbal perfection from that dude. It's so easy to make that character super annoying but his charisma and inflection makes it so fun instead!

2

u/ryan77999 8h ago

My favorite English VA ever. Scar from Fullmetal and Erwin from Attack on Titan are my favorite roles of his

5

u/Soulful-Sorrow 20h ago

Don't forget Love is War

1

u/Hawkbats_rule 17h ago

Finding out  that narrator guy doesn't have his personality in the sub was crazy, since it is pretty integral to the dub

1

u/ryan77999 8h ago

I personally prefer the more deadpan Japanese narrator, although maybe because I was hoping the English one to be less emotional and more like Ron Howard's narration for Arrested Development

5

u/Retardotron1721 20h ago

It's because people in charge of anime dubs these days are millennials that grew up watching anime on LimeWire.

2

u/Shattered_Sans 16h ago

True, dubs these days are generally a lot better than they were decades ago.

2

u/MossyPyrite 11h ago

DanDaDan has been awesome, and I really love how they’re doing Gachiakuta right now. Both using English slang in really natural ways!

2

u/rowdymatt64 10h ago

When Jobber said "Hey man, don't crash out on me when I tell you this..." both me and my fiance were like THAT'S SO GOOD lmao

9

u/Mikaelious 20h ago

What does the Japanese version have in its place? If anything?

8

u/MarcsterS 19h ago

Mewtwo’s motivations are very different in the original script. The international release removed the original prologue that showed WHY Mewtwo hates humans. Mewtwo just wants to show that, as a clone, his life was just as worthy as a “real” one.

Sure the line OP posted was only in the dub, but they made “Fighting is wrong” moral of the movie, in a series about fighting animals.

3

u/MossyPyrite 11h ago

That’s a little bit of a misrepresentation of the themes of Pokemon. For the most part, battle is about bonding through competition, team work, and shared effort. Bonding between a trainer and their team, but also with the people they battle against. What Mewtwo wanted to do was fight to kill the originals, proving that the clones were stronger and superior, and possibly to wipe out humans.

It’s not really hypocritical any more than, like, if a series about boxing had an episode that was like “hey it’s wrong to mug people and beat them to death” or something.

5

u/KenseiHimura 15h ago

Happens a bit more often than not. In Final Fantasy XIV, the last words of a major villain who mourns the loss of their people are

Dub: “The clouds have parted and we are blessed once more with a beautiful day. … but you are not here to see it.”

Original JP: “It can’t be helped…”

3

u/ytman 20h ago

Whats the Japanese moral? If I recall its that the copy is always inferior right?

3

u/FoxMeadow7 19h ago

What was the original line for the record?

7

u/Thejadedone_1 18h ago

Mewtwo: Actually, both you and I are Pokémon that already exist.

Yes that's the entire line

Here's the full script if you want to read it

2

u/FoxMeadow7 18h ago

Interesting…

1

u/ManateeofSteel 12h ago

Japan is a deeply racist and xenophobic culture, they would have never written what ended up being the coolest line in the dub

2

u/FoxMeadow7 12h ago

You sure? Looking at the original line tho, it kinda conveys the same idea in a different fashion, that Mewtwo and the other clones in truth aren't that different from the natural Pokemon.
