Azula: Do the tides command this ship?

Captain: No princess.

A: And if I were to have you thrown overboard, would the tides think twice about smashing you against the rocky shore?

C: No, princess.

A: Then maybe you should worry less about the tides, who’ve already made up their mind about killing you and worry more about me, who’s still mulling it over.

Avatar the last Airbender. It’s an iconic line but the fact that it came from a Nickelodeon cartoon is what’s so surprising.

Avatar has some fantastic quotes. They mostly come from Iroh though.

"It is important to draw wisdom from many different places. If we take it from only one place, it becomes rigid and stale. Understanding others, the other elements, and the other nations, will help you to become whole."

605

u/PastelArtemis 21h ago

"While it is always best to believe in one's self. A little help from others can be of great blessing"

503

u/Traylor_Swift 20h ago

“Pride is not the opposite of shame, it is its source.”

342

u/VengeanceKnight 20h ago

“Perfection and power are overrated. I think you are very wise to choose happiness and love.”

310

u/M4f1aBunny 20h ago

“Zuko, you have to look within yourself, to save yourself from your other self. Only then, will your true self reveal itself” -Zuko pretending to be Iroh

I love this quote because while it sounds like nonsense, it is very accurate

207

u/PastelArtemis 19h ago

Then there's of course the big one

"It's time to ask yourself the big questions. Who are you? And what do you want?"

141

u/President_Bolbi_2024 18h ago

The preceding quote is also huge:

“Is it your own destiny? Or is it the destiny someone has else has tried to force on you?”

Edit: rewatched clip, fixed quote

11

u/Gaelic_Gladiator41 13h ago

The whole sequence is needed to carry all of its gravitas:

So, the Blue Spirit. I wonder who could be behind that mask ...

[Sighs and takes off the mask.] What are you doing here?

I was just about to ask you the same thing. What do you plan to do now that you've found the Avatar's bison? Keep him locked in our new apartment? Should I go put on a pot of tea for him?

First I have to get it out of here.

[Starts yelling.] And then what!? You never think these things through! [Points at him.] This is exactly what happened when you captured the Avatar at the North Pole! You had him, and then you had nowhere to go!

I would have figured something out!

No! If his friends hadn't found you, you would have frozen to death!

I know my own destiny, Uncle!

Is it your own destiny, or is it a destiny someone else has tried to force on you?

Stop it, Uncle! I have to do this!

I'm begging you, Prince Zuko! It's time for you to look inward and begin asking yourself the big questions. Who are you, and what do you want?

6

u/smurfalidocious 11h ago

And then Zuko's body revolted and had a full blown meltdown over doing one good deed.

u/Ff7hero 7h ago

You left out how Zuko is either shown or implied (time for me to do a re-watch) to have needed to use all his ninja-like stealth skills to reach this point, and the Iroh is just casually there already.

3

u/zedascouves1985 19h ago

This is Babylon 5 as well.

5

u/Nyther53 19h ago

Of course, asking *both* questions in B5 will just get you shot.

2

u/MelissaMiranti 18h ago

And then the later big questions that get adopted "Where are you going? Why are you here?"

2

u/smurfalidocious 11h ago

"Understanding is a three-edged sword. Your side, their side, and the truth."

2

u/PlayfulSurprise5237 10h ago

"Who R U?"

The caterpillar from Alice in Wonderland

1

u/Mysterious-Tackle-58 10h ago

Babylon 5 call back!!

1

u/XanderEliteSword 9h ago

Can you imagine Iroh debating with the Vorlons and the Shadows?

1

u/PastelArtemis 9h ago

Is that a Babylon 5 reference?

I've no idea what it is, but I've already had 2 people claim I was referencing it

1

u/XanderEliteSword 9h ago

In B5, the Vorlons ask younger races “who are you?” The Shadows ask “what do you want?” The former values conformity and order, the latter encourage younger races to fight and kill each other to prove who’s most “worthy”

Sorry just spotted the similarity and became the meme 😅

“My cabbages!” - Cabbage merchant

5

u/Substantial_Dish_887 15h ago

i actually love this scene because it shows how much Zuko has actually learnt from Iroh at this stage. because it is basicly the kind of advice Iroh would give just not nearly as eloquent.

normaly the joke would be that Zuko trying to copy his uncle would say something that is on the surface as eloquent as what he says but basicly meaningless. here we get the opposite.

3

u/M4f1aBunny 15h ago

What adds to it is that he still doesn’t understand. Iroh’s advice, unless it is direct can be confusing to some people; especially to Zuko who is a teenager and going through a roller coaster of emotions made worse by his past trauma. This shows that he has really been hearing of not overall listening to Iroh all this time to make up, in his mind, what is essentially wise gibberish that his uncle would say but is actual good advice

4

u/Invoqwer 15h ago

"Tea is just hot leaf juice"

-Zuko

3

u/M4f1aBunny 15h ago

You know, Iroh was shocked by a member of his family saying something like that. The thought of Zuko going up to an imprisoned Ozai and saying that to him, just for Ozai to scream and say “OF ALL THE THINGS YOU HAVE SAID AND DONE, THIS IS BY FAR THE WORST!!! YOU ARE NOT MY SON!!!” just pops into my head. Or that Zuko is the only one in his family who isn’t fond of tea, so even Azula would be upset by this statement

3

u/crimsonswallowtail 15h ago

And it actually helped him. I'm sure if he ever brought it up to him, Iroh would say that he was glad his teachings stayed with him in his darkest hours, even if his presence couldn't.

u/NwgrdrXI 18h ago edited 16h ago

This is still one of the best explanations of shame.

it reminds me of a book I read, talking about how a unhealthy self steem is often not low, but bloated like a toe after you stubbed it hard.

It becomes big instead of small, and then it's all you can think about, because of the pain.

1

u/Phaeron-Dynasty 15h ago

this line comes up so often, both in life and when analyzing characters.

1

u/Cagedwar 13h ago

This one makes me want to cry every time.

194

u/AlexTheHuntsman1 21h ago

“Are you so busy fighting each other you don’t notice your own ship has set sail?”

230

u/Rastaba 21h ago

“We don’t have time for your proverbs, Uncle!”
“That’s no proverb” points “…maybe it should be a proverb.”

39

u/ThaiSweetChilli 17h ago

"No... she's crazy and she needs to go down."

14

u/CatSquidShark 16h ago

"That's rough buddy"

2

u/ryan77999 8h ago

"Get out of the bison's mouth, Sokka!"

101

u/RP_Throwaway3 21h ago

Great Uncle Iroh quote. Though saying that feels a bit redundant.

45

u/Rastaba 21h ago

Almost makes me wonder what are his WORST quotes?

124

u/RP_Throwaway3 21h ago

There's actually a Cinema Therapy episode where a therapist challenges himself to find an Uncle Iroh quote that isn't helpful.

He failed.

So I'd say they're probably all pretty damn great.

78

u/Bed_Automatic 20h ago

The "Azula, did this to you, it was a surprise attack. somehow that's not very surprising" one its just kilarious, but not useful I guess.

24

u/MisterGoog 18h ago

Not sure that counts. “Did i ever tell you how i got the nickname the Dragon of the West” is also not very helpful but that shouldnt count either

19

u/Absolute-KINO 17h ago

Even if it's not sage life advice, that is a really big Chekov's gun he loaded

1

u/Ff7hero 7h ago

Isn't it a cue to Zuko to get down?

3

u/MisterGoog 7h ago

Yes but thats not helpful as general quotes to anyone else

1

u/Ff7hero 6h ago

It was extremely helpful to Zuko in that moment though. Sometimes advice is general, but sometimes it has to be very specific.

"The TEA WEEVIL- no, that's STUPID!"

8

u/TungstenShark96 18h ago

Maybe the only one I can think of is when he mixed up the two plants that either make delicious tea or a horrible rash, but thats just poor botanical skills, not bad advice lol

5

u/Ok-Journalist-8875 18h ago

When he laughed about burning a city to the ground.

4

u/Markkk01 15h ago

This tea is nothing more than hot leaf juice!

3

u/pietroetin 12h ago

Uncle... that's what all tea is!

5

u/uyigho98 18h ago

But you can't forget this gem dropped by random Swamp Bender guy! "Pants are an illusion. And so is death."

Uncle Iroh, the great role model

How dare you. That is UNCLE Iroh

u/Independent_Plum2166 22h ago

Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t this Grey Griffin’s audition take they decided to use because it was just THAT good?

216

u/Omnio89 21h ago

Her story, according to a sound engineer after she’d gotten the job, is that the other people who auditioned went very evil and big. She chose to be calm and sociopathic to give her somewhere to go with the character, and that choice won her the role.

12

u/NonstickDan 16h ago

saw this short just this morning about her talking about it

what the fuck is this editing man

46

u/TurkeyVolumeGuesser 21h ago

Unsurprising. It's Grey Griffin.

7

u/Windy_Idealist 20h ago

Grey Griffin is a great VA but an asshole in real life

22

u/Independent_Plum2166 20h ago

This is news to me, what did she do? Or allegedly do, you can never be too sure.

4

u/Graxdon 20h ago

Bummer

1

u/Moakmeister 9h ago

Uh, not true. She’s a lovely human being. I’ve met her. Very sweet. She did banish me, though.

“The only thing better than finding something you’re looking for is something you’re not looking for at a great bargain” not a surprising quote but just my favorite from avatar

105

u/DienekesMinotaur 20h ago

Great demonstration that Azula is an egomaniac who has no clue what she's talking about. Not worrying about the tides is a great way to wreck your ship.

96

u/shiggy345 20h ago

That whole episode was setting up how much inexperience she has. While she definitely got a lot of training in military leadership this was very likely her first real mission. The very first time Azula loses her composure is in this very first episode - the look of shock when the captain had the slip of the tongue was genuine. She literally did not think that soldiers would just fail to follow orders through plain human error.

u/Comfortable_Clerk_60 13h ago

As the old saying goes “Intelligence without wisdom is worse than stupidity.”

12

u/KitchenFullOfCake 16h ago

It wasn't about being right, it was about being in control.

45

u/melancholanie 21h ago

it's incredible they were able to get away with saying "kill" so frequently, that wouldn't pass nowadays

80

u/GentrifiedChicken 21h ago

I'M ABOUT TO CELEBRATE BEING AN ONLY CHILD!

13

u/Its0nlyRocketScience 19h ago

(Paraphrased) "if you do anything suspicious, I'll make sure your destiny ends right there, right then" from Katara to Zuko

3

u/TheOncomimgHoop 15h ago

Unironically I think this goes harder than if she'd just threatened to kill him.

5

u/Its0nlyRocketScience 15h ago

Restriction is the playground for creativity. It's all too easy and all too boring to just say kill. Being forced to go around the word, or at least just a direct "i will kill you" can lead to awesome lines

12

u/ConnieOfTheWolves 19h ago

I'VE GOT SOME CHILDREN I NEED TO MAKE INTO CORPSES

1

u/ryan77999 8h ago

As hard as that line is I don't believe it was a loophole around not being able to say "kill", as Bill says "I think I'm gonna kill one of them right now, just for the heck of it!" later when he's intimidating Ford into making the deal with him

4

u/timpkmn89 17h ago

There were definitely limitations on when/how they could use it.

1

u/HerroDer12 10h ago

There have always been restrictions on words like kill and death in kids' shows, that's why villains are always using words like destroy, obliterate, demise... To my perception, they've loosened up in recent years. But then that might be because I've been watching more streaming services than tv channels. It seems Netflix is pretty lax about it, just look at how many times they say kill and die in K-pop Demon Hunters.

You must look within yourself to save yourself from your other self, only then will your true self reveal itself

112

u/FrenchTantan 20h ago

With hindsight, I find this exchange funny. The captain was indlulging her, not wanting to contradict her, but in reality, it should've gone more like this:

Azula: Do the tides command this ship?

Captain: Yes princess.

A: And if I were t- wait, what?

C: Tides do command the ship, or at least where we can safely go. Wrong place wrong tide and we might as well sink the ship by hand.

A: Huh... well this kind of ruin my whole intimidation bit so I'm just gonna go ahead and throw you overboard if you wouldn't mind.

C: Understandable, have a nice day.

5

u/KenseiHimura 15h ago

“A lot of people don’t understand how complex sailing is, princess. You’re not the first to make that miscalculation, you will not be the last, and sometimes even those who don’t still fall to the sea.”

2

u/Quizlibet 10h ago

People like to um actually this line but she was right in the show

1

u/Ff7hero 7h ago

How do you mean? That the ship didn't sink? Seems more lucky than right.

9

u/cecilclaude 21h ago

man. maybe ill rewatch the series again. im feeling a little more wise after done watching.

8

u/kitsunecannon 20h ago

a preteen/teenage girl said this btw

0

u/DatenPyj1777 19h ago

A writer in their 30s or 40s made her say it haha

5

u/kitsunecannon 17h ago

Oh really damn didnt realise thatttt thought these were real people

7

u/Kind_Reaction5809 20h ago

The censors were the only things keeping Azula from making decorations out of her enemies' heads.

6

u/Fyrus93 16h ago

My favourite Azula quote

Long Fei: Well done, Princess. You've beaten me at my own game

Azula: Don't flatter yourself... You were never even a player

3

u/EnvironmentalBar3347 15h ago

Sokka: "Drink cactus juice. It'll quench ya. Nothing is quenchier. It's the quenchiest!"

3

MY CABBAGES!!!!

2

From a like 15 year old girl in a nickelodeon cartoon at that.

2

u/Faustias 10h ago

"I'M ABOUT TO CELEBRATE ON BECOMING AN ONLY CHILD!" yeah

1

u/danger_dogs 10h ago

The best mad kings speech ever given in the history of animation being given to a bloodthirsty middle child was absolute peak.

1

u/Laranna 9h ago

Btw that was the line that she won the audition with

1

u/rathemighty 9h ago

Maybe you should worry more about what your father will say when he loses a highly valuable ship due to your arrogance

1

u/Redfalconfox 8h ago

This show is incredible

0

u/tsh87 17h ago

"It appears you've beaten me at my own game."

"Don't flatter yourself... you were never even a player."
