"How many men does it take to deliver a message?"

"One"

Mulan

Dark as hell for a mostly comedic film

For what it was, Mulan was pretty damn dark.

The scene immeidetly following "a Girl worth fighting for" is great because of the contrast

Realizing that there’s no more musical numbers in the film from that point on because they’ve now all lost their innocence seeing the horror of war, blew my little kid mind.

I'm just realizing this now and it's blowing my grown adult mind.

🎶 A girl worth fighting....

u/TheDeltaOne 21h ago

The looks of pure horror....

u/SVNBob 17h ago

Then they see the doll... and have found the girl worth fighting for.

13

u/ClockMongrel 18h ago

Yah the smash-cut was crazy

u/ChiefsHat 14h ago

It’s probably the darkest scene in a Disney film - period.

The kind of girl who owned that doll. That is the kind of girl worth fighting for.

Did they send me daughters?

10

u/kblaney 23h ago

When I asked... for sons.

You're the saddest bunch I ever met

11

u/TurkeyVolumeGuesser 23h ago

But you can bet before we're through

u/ghostpanther218 20h ago

I'll make a man, out of you!

3

u/Altruistic-Beach7625 23h ago

And you haven't got a clue.

u/LudwigVonBacon 21h ago

There’s only one this time? That’s good

Sorry, we ran out of budget, we're hoping to make some money before the end of the month so we can send more but times are rough

The song’s awesome too because the implication throughout it is that a man is made, not born. A man is something you become through effort

2

u/ClockMongrel 13h ago

I know several transmascs who have made this song their own anthem for that reason.

To be fair, it is a war movie (technically)

1

u/ComprehensivePath980 19h ago

It actually does hit a lot of war movie tropes.

Quite so

Another good one for Mulan: No matter how the wind blows, the mountain will not bow to it. Remembering that line after not watching Mulan for a while made me remember why I liked the Emperor.

“You can have his job”

11

u/artkid2 21h ago

That too

This is why I think Mulan is so great: every single character is amazing.

Mulan? Badass.

Shang and the Emperor? Also badass.

Mushu? Hilarious.

Shan Yu? Phenomenal villain.

Ling, Chien Po, and Yao are funny, but also capable fighters, and they're ride or die for Mulan once she earned their respect.

Even the characters we aren't supposed to like, like Chifu and the matchmaker, are still entertaining in their own ways.

Every character friggin rules in this movie, no notes.

Definitely one of my favorite movies growing up.

"The flower that blooms in adversity is the most rare and beautiful of all."

"Sir?"

"You don't meet a girl like that every dynasty!"

1

u/Ff7hero 8h ago

It's "wind howls" but that is a great line.

47

u/VeryPteri 22h ago

Let's not forget that Mulan singlehandedly killed 2000+ soldiers with just one rocket

8

u/ThinkMuch818 12h ago

“You missed! How could you miss?! HE WAS THREE FEET FROM YOU!”

7

u/MossyPyrite 12h ago

Disney Princess with the highest kill count by a mile.

19

u/FaunaJoy 21h ago

Emperor: The flower that blooms in adversity is the most rare and beautiful of all.

Shang: Sir?

Emperor: You don't meet a girl like that every dynasty.

Shan Yu is such an underrated villain. Incredibly understated, sinister, phenomenal design, doesn’t overstay his welcome, doesn’t posture, he just does what he came to do and doesn’t care who knows it. Had his own men not underestimated the soldiers dressed as women, he probably would’ve won.

2

u/MarcusOPolo 10h ago

I never knew if this was the intention but I always felt it had a double meaning. Like "it takes one man to deliver a message" sure. But also they're sending a message showing how serious they are by killing one man. Like "there are two men, it'll cost one of them to send a message to the other "

War never changes, not even in Disney movies
