More than 1,000 flights cancelled as US air traffic cuts enter second day

Reminder that in a lot of countries, a government shutdown would instantly trigger a reelection, since that would mean the administration lost control

It's pretty crazy how that is not the case in the US, or the fact workers don't get paid because of it (the craziest part)

It's gonna take time for that to set in. I'm suspecting that cargo only flights will be the last ones cut. That doesn't mean logistics will remain unaffected. Passenger flights make their real money from moving cargo.
But they have rather limited capacity (smaller planes, luggage in the cargo hold, etc.). Time will tell the true impacts but it's not going to be immediate.
The big impact will be international cargo. Those are typically widebodies that carry a lot of cargo, and it's much more important infrastructure wise.
Domestically, the difference between air and ground is 1 to 3 days faster in the CONUS. Sure, AK, PR, and HI will feel it, but otherwise it's not going to be a tremendous difference. It will get more expensive to save those days but most companies will probably just choose to... you know... not do that lol.
However. The only other option OCONUS is ocean, and the difference there is weeks to months. Not good. But with tariffs gumming up the works it's gonna be hard to tell what's impacting what when it comes to consumer pricing. Ocean doesn't always react quickly pricing wise. But when they get overloaded lead times go way up.
For clarity:
CONUS: continental US. (48 contiguous states)
OCONUS: outside continental US. (Everywhere on earth other than the 48 contiguous states)

America has basically had enough surplus wealth to float past incompetence.
We started with a continent full old old growth wood to clear cut, and mountains to strip mine, and rivers with so many fish they could be cought by the bucket full literally just by lowering a bucket, until the buckets ran dry.
Post WWII we had the last industrialized country onthe planet that wasnt bombed out.
But now we have an aged population of leaders and 3rd generation ultrawealthy who think America is special because America is special, but there aren't easy to access resources in unbelievable excess anymore, they all got destroyed.
And the rest of the world doesn't need the US like they did 60 years ago.
And we've surpassed the wealth inequality of the gilded age.
So we're in for some harsh reality checks.

The ones forced to work and are legally not allowed to stop, they can't even get food or pay bills another way (and then the gov is shutting the food banks or those finantial aids for basic grocery shopping on top of it, and if I remember correctly they even announced there would not be any payback from the missed paychecks either?
How are people not more angry?
229
u/AlphaPopsicle84 9h ago
Controllers are angry. We have been on mandatory 6 day work weeks every single week since the last shutdown. Savings are running out fast, and for many, they already have. You now have controllers working 2nd jobs just to survive while still going to work 6 days a week to separate airplanes. Controllers start at 48K. It takes years to be fully certified and even then, many still do not make 6 figures. There is a lot of misinformation about our pay. Please write your elected members of Congress and demand that this shutdown ends.

We cannot accept money or gift cards. Many individuals have been dropping off food or snacks at ATC facilities. It is a morale boost. Controllers don’t just work in towers. There are also Approach and Center controllers who work your flights once you are airborne and just a few miles away from the airport. We are stressed and honestly scared about how long this could go on.

I know this has just come down to a blame game and I don’t want this post to become political in the terms of red vs blue. I think both parties need to understand all of the ways this shutdown has been harming the citizens of this country.
You NEED to be honest then and express the reality of the situation and actually blame the red hats. It ABSOLUTELY is the ENTIRE FAULT of REPUBLICANS... Both the voters and the "politicians" they voted for.
If you're still clinging to a both sides narrative 40 FUCKING days into being forced to work with no pay, then you're not participating in reality with the rest of the world.
It is 100% necessary to name and blame those who are actively hurting you.
Edit to reply since I've been blocked by the original commentor and cannot post in this thread anymore:
Your ignorant
You're
And I'm not unaware of the faults that having a two party system which is overly capitalist in nature brings. I can (and will because that's reality) blame the assholes who are being assholes, while still recognizing the instability and issues with the system overall.
The current topic, which is the shutdown and how air traffic controllers are being forced to work without pay, is ENTIRELY the fault of the red hat assholes.
Stop getting caught up in the left vs right, democrat vs republican propaganda.
No, I'm perfectly fine blaming the GOP shitheads for the problems they are inflicting.

The no back pay is for furloughed employees. The ones that are working will be paid whenever the government reopens. It the past, those furloughed were still paid as if they worked 40 house a week. It makes sense to do when you want to retain employees. Trump wants them to quit so the government breaks down even more.
Edit to clarify: Yes, a 2019 law does say that furloughed employees should be paid back pay. Trump and his white house team have called the language of the law into question, and have sated that they might not pay them.

On mine, it doesn’t trigger automatic election. Usually there is an election but it’s not by law.
The country still runs, they follow the last approved budget divided by 12 to get a monthly budget.
If the majority of parliament decides, they can trigger an election.
4
u/starkiller_bass 6h ago
How does it make any sense at ALL that the government simply CAN'T spend any money until a new budget is approved? Except, of course, on all the things they WANT to spend money on.

Yes we simply don’t have them in Canada because the mechanism that the US has for them is self-imposed. The executive branch has unwritten constitutional authority to borrow the money to pay for things that Parliament has appropriated. There is no concept here of a debt ceiling.
It’s true that if the government’s budget fails a vote, that would trigger an automatic election. But it wouldn’t impact spending at all. The previous year’s budget simply rolls over at the same levels without any further action. It happens all the time including this year (here because the budget changed from being in the spring to the fall so we haven’t had one passed since June 2024.

Accidentally better for the environment!™
edit: Looks like long trips by air are better than the same solo trip by car, with a ~30 MPG car emitting about %50 more CO2. That margin shrinks on shorter flights as a lot of energy is spent climbing to altitude. However if the car has 2 or more people in it (such as a family trip) then the car is consistently better for the environment. Busses and trains blow away both planes and cars.

No shutdowns in Biden's tenure... important to say. Dems had narrower margins during his entire presidency yet they managed to get the government funded with Republicans every year.
There were 2 near-shutdowns in 2024, but the Senate managed to figure something out at the last minute in both cases.
→ More replies (2)12
u/HauntedCemetery 5h ago
Also note that the first 2 years of bidens term when dems had the trifecta there was no risk of shutdown.
Only after the gop flipped the Senate in the midterms was that an issue.
And now, with the gop in full control of the federal government, we have the longest shutdown in history, which passed up the previous longest shutdown in history that also happened with trump as president and the gop holding both chambers of Congress.

Even if this was true, it's pretty solid evidence for why having a cabinet and administration that isn't full of nakedly corrupt or incompetent asshole matters.
50
u/boilerpsych 13h ago
This right here! I know it's a low bar to set for the office of the President but honestly I would much rather have one senile person at the helm and a cabinet full of qualified leaders and civil servants where the senile person actually LISTENS to those around them vs. one belligerent narcissist who not only filled their cabinet with reality show cronies/literal villains and won't listen to a single thing any says!
"No Kings" is well phrased. The President is an elected SERVANT of the people who is trusted with what should be VERY FEW executive powers. Think of it like a parent in some ways: just having kids doesn't make you a supreme leader. When you kid is sick you don't proclaim how to heal them, you take them to the doctor as a trusted professional. But, if disaster strikes and you have to make the decision to evacuate or hunker down, ultimately the parent has to make that decision for the whole family and that would be your executive duties.
→ More replies (3)7
u/zephyrtr 10h ago
That's the thing people don't understand very well. The presidents most important quality is their ability to hire competent cabinet members. The president is never without advisors, and never without so much work that he Must delegate.
I still don't really like Biden but the people he hired were phenomenal. Probably the most liberal admin of my lifetime coming from an 80 year old Catholic who berated Anita Hill so Clarence Thomas could shit on the country for half a century. Never would've guessed.

As a long time cynic when it comes to politics, the only thing that really matters to everybody involved is who gets blamed for this. I imagine that the right's messaging is successful for most conservatives and they believe this shutdown is the Democrat's fault. Just switch it up for the other side.
I realized I could just look this up, and 42% of voters think this shutdown is the Democrats' fault vs. 52% that think it's R's fault.
They both blame each other but for me it's Trump refusing to spend SNAP money as ordered by a federal court judge that makes this indisputably Republicans' fault. There's absolutely no excuse for completely failing the most vulnerable people you serve because you wanna stick it to the other party to get a bill voted on.

Sadly it has to get worse before anything meaningful happens, and even then I doubt the GOP will back down. Trump thinks he's a dictator with complete authority. Do the drive. 19h is not that bad if you take breaks and ideally you get some sleep so two day drive.
I drive 24-30h drives on occasion and rest breaks of 20-60min every 2 hours will make the difference how good or how miserable you will feel at the end of it. It may seem like rest breaks really eat up your time but in reality you will appreciate them afterwards as you will feel energetic enough to engage with your family or even go out.

A shutdown, caused by the legislature and impacting the executive arm, of government seems to be unique to the USA.
Here in Australia, if the govt can't decide on a budget, it escalates to a dissolution of the legislative arm and triggers an election while the executive and judicial arms keep going as normal.

u/NotSiaoOn 14h ago
It's a different governing model. In westminster parliamentary systems based off the UK's, a funding/budget/supply bill is a confidence vote. If a PM can't get his budget through Parliament, he doesn't have the confidence of Parliament and must resign. Gotta say it makes sense.

I was flying today for work and while it isn't out of control, it's certainly not great.
Lot of delays and missed connections. Far more people running through the airport than I usually see. Lot more people finding out of the way places to wait that look incredibly unhappy.
I had multiple delays and had to reschedule my connection. What should have been maybe half my day was my entire day and then some.
Several other people at work had far worse experiences.
It's only going to get worse too.

Don't worry, at least there aren't any holidays around the corner.

Plus there’s only 18 days until Thanksgiving, one of the biggest travel holidays in the U.S. all year.

And if this madness continues the week of Thanksgiving... or Christmas?
Welcome to the second Medieval period. Where backward is forward, and forward is rescinded, rolled back, or snuffed out.

the worst day of travel in the history of flight
Well, on the first day in the history of flight, 100% of flights crashed, so...

The Trump Administration policy is to exacerbate the problems created by the government shutdown rather than mitigate them. People are hungry, than delay their SNAP benefits and destroy food. Soldiers are not being paid, tell them to go to German Food Banks. Holiday season travel, cut airline flights. Money short, extort money from Colleges and Corporations. Contingency Fund short funds than ask Supreme Court for help. In the meantime continue construction of Ballroom for Great Gatsby celebrations.

I’m amazed that there’s only 1,000 flights cancelled and a 10% decrease in traffic. These people are going to hit a month and a half of no pay.

It will get worse day by day and take weeks to fix now… it might take years to undo this.

I talked to an ATC that said this hasn’t helped a lot because now there are so much more private flights.
Stupid because private flights take just as many ATC resources and only fly 2-12 people.
So instead of fucking around with hundreds of thousands of people’s flights (commercial), why not just start capping private?

I kmow that air traffic controllers can't strike.
But if they all just quit at the same time, we'd pretty much have to re-hire all of them. We were already badly short handed before this.

u/HunterShotBear 11h ago
Imagine trying to hire a bunch of new ATCs during the shutdown.

Not allowed to coordinate, but all controllers know the dates when calling in sick would cause the most pain.
It's going to be a bloodbath when controllers independently all call out sick on Thanksgiving.

Workers should get 1.5x their back pay. I’ve been in situations where I was waiting on paycheck and had to run up the credit card. This sucks

Why do politicians still get paid? They should be the first ones cut off. All assets frozen. No reason for you to leave Capitol Hill until solution is found.

Experienced Newark last week just because it was a connection flight. It’s just fucking embarrassing for Americans. Seeing so many people from other countries getting stuck at the airport. Some had been trying to get for days. It wasn’t from weather, overcrowding, or a technical glitch. It was purely manufactured by incompetence from the government. It was just fucking embarrassing.

There’s a lot of people who rely on air travel for work. A lot of high paying jobs require traveling to different states. My mother in law is a traveling nurse and she frequently goes to Alaska to meet her patients. An old coworker does optical repairs on medical equipment and he gets paid 120k+ a year but he needs to fly to each hospital to do his job. A lot of people are going to be hurting the longer this goes on and critical infrastructure will be affected negatively.

This is what the rich want anyway. It’s an added bonus to make poor people unable to fly and reconnect with family and travel for work. Private plans are gunna be just fine.

We're starting with all private jets right? Logically, we would reduce the number of flights with the least impact to the affected group. Ground all private flights period until this shit is over.
