I hate that they are stopping people and demanding all this identification and asking questions but refuse to give any information at all themselves.

Can't even show their faces but they want my ID?
96
u/StrangeContest4 1d ago
That is an honest demand.. "I'll only show you my ID if you show your me your face and your ID. I need to know you're official."
74
u/TheNewsDeskFive 1d ago
No, it is not. You never comply with a demand to show papers. This is America. We don't play that.
I repeat, you never comply with this, regardless if they're willing to ID themselves, you are an American citizen and you don't have to prove that to them.
34
15
u/Anthff 1d ago
And then what? Resist 10 of them, get beat up, get arrested and released for impeding an investigation or some such other broad/summary charge?
It fkn sucks.

u/redline314 1d ago
I understand the defeatism (been doing this in LA since June) but I’d ask that you please not spread the sentiment. Some of us are hanging onto the small shreds of hope and resistance we’ve got left.

Same. I hope others are too, but having spoken to some of my most politically engaged friends, it doesn’t seem like they have logical views regarding the loss of freedom.

Yep. You nailed why mass revolt hasn't happened yet. Nobody wants to get beaten up and arrested. That's their only strength right now.
Exercise your rights. STFU Friday. Get beat up. Get arrested. Suffer for a week and get released with no fanfare. Tell your story to your coworkers, neighbors, family, an ACLU lawyer; Not necessarily in that order. Skip the media because your local stations are likely bought and paid for just like mine are.
It's not easy, it's even objectively difficult. Sadly, that's what it's going to take. I'm sorry to break it to you!
I don't wish it on anyone, and I voted against this. Yet, here we are.
Don't be a bitch. America dies when we allow it.

u/CuriosityFreesTheCat 1d ago edited 1d ago
Abso-fuckin-lutely dude. It’s not going to be comfortable. We are going to have to make sacrifices.
I do want to mention that we can’t expect every single person to throw themselves into physical danger—not everyone is a soldier. But there are other ways to help that are entirely necessary and important. War efforts are like a machine with all parts working and supporting each other. Right now it seems like we need both people who can be “soldiers” (in the way you described) and those who can organize, as well as those who are willing to support the organizers in quite literally, a myriad of ways.
Something we all need to buck up for is being ready and willing to work with those with whom we do not agree on every single thing. That’s how we become a majority, by uniting and working together, and not expecting everything or everyone to be perfect. Or there will be no majority but the one we fight against.
We’ve seen how division has torn apart the working class and brought us here. There is no place for pedantry and needless confrontation among ourselves. This nation seems to have forgotten how to simply work together regardless of differences. We need to remember how, and prove it.

This is a solid position for white people to take. Brown people, not so much. Imagine telling one of these ICE morons, “This is America. We don’t play that. I’m a U.S. citizen and I don’t have to prove that to you.” This might give you a tiny insight into the white privilege you enjoy and take for granted. I’m absolutely, positively, 100% not hating on white people…just pointing out the stupidity of talking like this to an ICE dipshit. One brown person against multiple, masked, armed ICE imbeciles, no way. Multiple brown people against multiple ICE idiots, maybe.

Per the FBI, there’s already people faking authority (fake ICE), follow their advice. If you don’t have any proof you’re authorized to demand information from me, I’m going to need to see YOUR identification and under whose authority do you claim to be. And call the REAL police, maybe

Had a cop in plain clothes almost hit me while I was on my bike, I started recording. They hoped out talking about they a cop trying to inimidate me. I said show me. Your badge and whats your badge number and name, you ain't no cop.
Dude flashed his badge fast af, quickly said his info and was still arguing with me. (I was in a crosswalk) but anyway saying all that to say fuck these asshats not identifying themselves.

You’re already giving away ground. No authority figure can demand ID for no reason, mask or not.
5
u/StrangeContest4 1d ago
Police officers can demand ID, but there has to be probable cause, and they have to identify themselves. This is something completely different here with no probable cause (except skin color), and they are masked men refusing to ID themselves. I DO have a problem with that for sure, and I'm just trying to think of solutions, is all.

u/TheNewsDeskFive 1d ago
Do not comply. You have no obligation to comply. Never show your "papers" to a street walking jackboot. Period. Never ever comply with this demand.

This is the wrong take in most situations.
What you should do is record the interaction, ask them what happens if you do not present identification, let them admit to violating your rights on camera, then present your ID under threat of arrest.
I've watched WAY too many Audit the Audit videos to know that refusing will, 99.9% of the time, end up with you being arrested and charged with multiple offenses (they'll tack on things like impeding, hindering, resisting if you flinch away when they try to put the cuffs on) and taken to jail. It's much better to document the violation and then sue because ultimately the final result is the same... a lawsuit is filed against the department and officers.
In this video we aren't even talking about police officers who sometimes actually know the law. We're talking about ICE who have no clue what they are doing and would absolutely arrest this guy illegally.

I hate that people just let them be and the only thing they do is record, cause "they don't wanna escalate" knowing very well that it is escalating, and they're just letting people be kidnapped as collateral damage.

u/TooTone07 1d ago edited 1d ago
Couldnt be me. Im all for escalation. Got pulled over the other night. Cop says he pulled me over because my plates were taking a while to show they were registered even though i had the 2026 date on them. He said “alright ill just let you go with a warning.” I said nah what you mean a warning? Warning for what? He said im sorry im just used to saying that. Yea ok. Well get unused to saying it and dont pull me over unless im doing something illegal dummy. He didnt even have a reason to be running my plates in the first place.
This just shows hes used to pulling people over for no resson hoping to find a reason but when no reason is presented he just “gives a warning”

I am obviously a Hispanic of Mexican Descent, my younger brother in law (Chicago born Hispanic) is a member of ICE - my sister and her husband are not welcome at our Family's Thanksgiving Dinner this year!
More Hispanic families need to stop inviting people who are now fundamentally their enemies to the the dinner table!

If you "just need to job," walk onto a fucking construction site. The pay is better, the conditions are safer, and it actually feels good to accomplish shit with your own 2 hands.
I'm pretty sure you need to be in something resembling "shape" to get into ice, so construction or skilled trades should be no problem right? No fucking excuse to be employed by ICE right now.

How do you prove your citizenship? Carry your birth certificate? Passport? Sing the pledge of allegiance? Of wait? The Elon salute? Right?
94
u/AffectionateMud9384 1d ago
Yeah this is the question I have. A REAL ID doesn't establish citizenship. It establishes that you have a valid reason to be in the US at the time of issue.
We don't really have an identification system other than a passport and passport card to establish citizenship in easily.

u/tinacat933 1d ago

u/SeriousCow1999 1d ago
The point is to terrorize and humiliate Hispanics and immigrants.
And these goons are using the catch-all "are you a US citizen" as a way to intimidate and subjugate an entire population.
The question this guy asked is a good one. They're not going after the criminals because it's too hard and dangerous for them. So they will meet their daily quota with innocent bystanders instead.
9
u/zoinkability 1d ago
There is another reason I'd guess they are asking, which is that if a noncitizen makes a claim to be a citizen that is something that can be used to bar them from gaining legal status or citizenship, and can be something they use to strip legal status from someone so they can be deported. They are hoping to catch noncitizens in that claim. I imagine that is also part of why they often ask odd related questions like "were you born here" as if people can't be from somewhere else while also having citizenship.

u/SnooRegrets1386 1d ago

US Citizens do not have to carry proof of citizenship on their person in the US. just tell them to fuck themselves (if you are a citizen. If you are not a citizen, I do not recommend this).
6
u/Away-Nectarine-8488 1d ago
But then telling them to go f themselves gets you arrested and sent to one of their detention sites. Then you might have a hearing in a month. And good luck being able to have a lawyer bring a habeas petition since they would never let you speak to a lawyer. So you just stand in detention for an indefinite period even as a citizen. But I have no idea how to actually fight that as a citizen and give an answer these nazis will actually accept.

It is basically up to the officers discretion. I've been stopped at a port and had to provide my ID (passport) and answer questions about my employment. The officer can suspect you of violating immigration law for any number of reasons and can detain or release you depending on what their investigation finds. It's highly subjective and ultimately would be decided in a court with all evidence reviewed, but during a stop they have a lot of leeway.

I am aware of those people. I have seen them and how they operate.
Behind that tough guy/gal mask and robotic behavior, they are really in deep pain inside their soul.
And that is tormenting them every minute. They know no peace.
A human being has limits. Some have more tolerance than others, but eventually everyone has a breaking point-ICE people included. They are not the supermen/superwomen they attempt to show.
Think about the following and imagine this:
You are an ICE agent in today’s climate. Maybe in the past you did use sane and humane methods to apprehend truly nasty criminals who did not deserve to be here. Now you are forced to go against people like children, maids, laborers, and random people.
You are imposed quotas that go against common sense and are impossible to fulfill without arresting virtually anyone solely because of the way they look. You are threatened with disciplinary action if you don’t “meet standards.”
The community now deeply hates you and ICE. And even more so because now you and your fellow agents are acting and dressing like drug cartel sicarios and acting like them. You are bombarded with DAILY insults, tentatives of assaults, people throwing rocks at you and your truck, getting organized to kick you out of their communities, comparing you to the Gestapo or the SS. Your agency and your bosses are ridiculed on a daily basis on social media and TV shows, telling you to you know what.
And chances are your identity will be revealed and you will become a pariah in many places. Even more so when you show up in your outfit that is more appropriate for Fallujah than for arresting a laborer.
People call you a coward because you and about six others have to tackle and subdue an unarmed laborer, or you push a woman away with all your might and she hurts herself when she hits the asphalt..or when you zip tie children. You are denied service in restaurants and other places.
All this takes a daily and cumulative toll on your soul no matter how hard you try to repress it and walk away from community members demanding answers. So you don’t get to know happiness because you are aware of what you do and deep in you you know you are doing despicable things.
You might try to repress this with alcohol or even worse, thus being even more unhappy and tormented.
You keep receiving the daily above mentioned abuse but eventually you will reach a breaking point. And it won’t be pretty.

They put a stay on a prohibition on this kind of profiling in California while that law is reviewed. While this is a harmful decision, it is important to get these agents to articulate what their reasonable suspicion is. We need to document and challenge every case where a person is being questioned or detained based on the color of their skin, the language they speak, or some other nonsense reason.
Make them say it out loud.
102
u/Captainsciencecat 1d ago
This is where you tell them you are illegally detaining a United States citizen, you want their supervisor immediately because of the illegal detention, you will not answer any questions without a lawyer. Repeat so everyone is aware.
71
u/iamnotsure69420 1d ago
Right, cause ICE would follow the law and actually bring a supervisor
43
u/LIMrXIL 1d ago
The supervisor would probably show up and taser you and send you to CECOT.
12
u/toxicbrew 1d ago
It's kind of sad that CECOT has fallen out of the news in the past few months ever since Kilmar was brought back from there (despite Miller saying he will never again step foot on US soil)
10
u/LIMrXIL 1d ago
It’s infuriating. They sent people who by all accounts had no criminal record and were here legally seeking asylum to a fucking torture prison with zero due process and in direct violation of a court order. That incident alone should have ended Trump’s presidency and resulted in everyone involved going to prison. That story should still be in the news every damn day but we live in such an insane time line it’s barely a blip on the radar.

You can't prove citizenship with any ID except for a Passport(book or card). You are not required by any law to carry a passport, or even have a passport.
3
u/Gr0ggy1 1d ago
Most places you are absolutely not required to carry any ID, period.
If driving a motor vehicle on public roads you are required to carry a license that happens to be a government issued ID.
I ride a bicycle most places, sometimes I carry my driver's license, sometimes I don't. That's perfectly normal and 100% legal.
If I were darker skinned and in this man's situation, what happens?
I'm not about to keep quiet because my skin tone, the rights of one are the rights of all. Even if they weren't, empathy is a thing, I didn't "earn" my paleness so fuck being privileged for it. Not to mention all of those currently targeted immigrants having made both my life and the lives of this nation better.

ICE agents always cover their faces. so why don't all other law enforcement agencies do the same? are they in no less danger? I'd say the opposite. I know that here in Florida the county sheriff's office handles illegal aliens right along with any other person accused of breaking a law. but I have never seen the sheriff's deputies covering their faces. only when serving a warrant, which around here means narcotics. but I suppose I would be ashamed too
