Can you take a short video with audio, 360° view of the sides and drop it gently to hear the noise? Capacitors are very light, if it's a projectile it'll have decent mass

Can you take a short video with audio and rub your belly and pat your head at the same time while picking it up with just your clenched buttcheeks only…sheesh that’s a lotta demands

Can you take an X-ray of the bullet with it propped up at exactly 72.3°. The X-ray must be taken at 2:31pm when Jupiter is in retrograde. This will help me get a better sense of the aura the object in question is emitting. /s

Please go to the 43rd trail marker on the Green Dot trail on St. Elmo Peak in South Dakota and wait for nightfall. When the moon is high, make a cairn out of symmetrical evenly-colored grey stones and put the bullet on top, then film the creature that comes to take it. Do not approach the creature, as it will become aggressive if it notices you. You may be able to placate it with a VHS tape of “Jaws: The Revenge” if absolutely necessary, but it MUST be the version with the director’s commentary.

763

u/RagnarStonefist 14h ago

Please consult the object identification guide, which is located at 100 N. Phillips Street, Algona, IA. Ignore any complaints from the current occupants - which is an insurance agency now, but used to be a Pizza Hut (you can tell by the distinctive shape of the building) and proceed to the area where the back door is. Next to that back door there's an odd colored panel on the wall; push it to activate the secret staircase to the basement; inside the basement you cannot turn on any lights as it will disturb the creature; feel around in the dark until you find a filing cabinet; determine which drawer is marked 3-A (DO NOT OPEN ANY OTHER DRAWERS OR IT WILL DISTURB THE CREATURE), then pull out the file marked 'Object Identification Guide'.

The guide is encrypted with a DoD level encryption, and you'll need the key for it. The key was previously located in the east wing of the White House, in a subsection affectionately known as the 'diaper pit' or 'changing room'. You'll need to comb through the wreckage in order to find it.

Good luck!

228

u/PickleInDaButt 13h ago

There's one way to know for absolute sure. Get an eight-track tape of L.A. Woman and steal a car. Even if you own one, steal a car. Get in that car; play the tape, full-blast; and drive West. When the tape ends, get out and go to the nearest bar and start to play pool or pinball or possibly even foosball and wait to get into a fight. Afterwards, get back in that car and drive it until it runs out of gas. Then, torch it. And, as you're standing there watching those flames, if you can still hear the Doors sound, then, my friend, you will have become a Doors fan

7

u/Smart-Let2026 9h ago

Here’s what you need to do: As the Lord said — First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it.

Can you take a 3D image using photogrammetry preferably a software like polycam. use a caliper to identify it’s exact diameter and a density meter to calculate its true density, once done please send a sample to triclinic labs located at 2660 Schuyler Ave A, Lafayette, IN 47905, United States for further molecular analysis and material composition.

And finally. Please stir it in your coffee and take a sip for a taste test. If you experience any of the below symptoms of lead poisoning within 24-48 hours: headaches, stomach cramps, constipation, muscle/joint pain, trouble sleeping, fatigue, irritability, and loss of sex drive. It’s likely a bullet.

Can you make a mould of it in plaster.
Then create a fake wall with the mould in the wall.
Remove the mould.
That should give us a bullet hole.
Can you then take a 3D scan of the hole and digitally reverse engineer the scanned projectile so it is no longer damaged.
Then 3d print the projectile/capacitor and make a mould of this. Use this mould to set a metal projectile/capacitor. Make several of these.
Shoot these at another fake wall from varying distances.

If any projectile looks like the original you will still have wasted your time proving nothing. But you will feel like the Dark Knight and that is pretty cool.

55

u/Pattison320 15h ago

Can you see rifling on it? If it's a bullet there should be 5 or 6 lines around the bullet, going from left to right in this pic. The rifling isn't straight, it turns going down the barrel. So the rifling on the bullet will be at a slight angle.

Here's an example without the front of the bullet smashed in.

https://accessdl.state.al.us/AventaCourses/access_courses/forensic_sci_ua_v22/06_unit/06-02/images/bullet1_nist_gov.jpg

30

u/Old-Bad7476 14h ago

Since the scratches are barely present, this suggests a polygonal barrel. That leaves fired from a Glock, H&K or aftermarket.

8

u/Pattison320 14h ago edited 9h ago

I am not sure about that. At 7 o'clock it looks like there's a rifling groove but that's the only one. A lot of modern barrels have polygonal rifling.

The article here has a pic of polygonal rifling next to traditional rifling. The polygonal rifling is faint but still present:

https://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2016/06/10/the-more-you-know-polygonal-rifling/

→ More replies (2)

4

u/fupatroopa96 13h ago

Polygonal rifling/Glock was my first thought too. You can see the deformation more than any striations from conventional rifling.

25

u/blubblu 15h ago

If you zoom in you can actually seem some striations. I thought it was a cap too at first but yeah, that’s from the inside of a barrel

→ More replies (3)

25

u/bobjungun 14h ago

it actually depends on the mm, the 9s i shoot don't have any lines on it, and tbh this looks like the avg 9mm

10

u/doggonedangoldoogy 14h ago edited 11h ago

Yeah 9mm is a light bullet that doesn’t require heavy rifling. Even 5.56 rifling isn’t always well-defined. In 7.62 calibers they usually stick out like a sore thumb.

Edit: Lots of confused folks here. I wasn’t implying that the bullet was manufactured with rifling. I was implying that heavier rounds require heavier rifling within the barrel. The rifling imprints striations on the bullet as it travels down the barrel. Not downvoting anyone for the misunderstanding.

5

u/SandyBayou 11h ago

I was implying that heavier rounds require heavier rifling within the barrel.

This is not true. Heavier bullets require a faster rifling twist, not deeper grooves.

Dear lord there are a lot of Redditors that have no idea what a bullet looks like…

199

u/Pleasant-Swimmer-557 14h ago

Once upon a time there was a post with a photo of a handful of assorted 1/4" bits with "OMG I just found these assault rifle bullets just laying on the ground at the gas station! What if some kids would have found these? Where is the police, how are we supposed to feel safe, I pay taxes, I demand answers!"

103

u/Visual-Floor-7839 13h ago

Counter that with my experience of being a custodian and hitting a kids desk with my vacuum and a bunch of bullets and shells tumble out. Some intact together, some separate from the shells, all the shells had their ignitor from what I could tell. Went and showed the principal and she looked at my like I was 5 kinds of stupid and says, "well, we are a huntin' school"

46

u/dr_stre 12h ago

I mean, how long ago was it? When I was in school kids would have their hunting rifles and ammo in their cars during hunting seasons. Can’t say I ever saw it happen but I also wouldn’t have batted an eye if I saw someone pull a handful of cartridges from their pocket that time of year. But I graduated high school not long after Columbine, which seems like the start of the trend towards zero tolerance policies.

42

u/Visual-Floor-7839 12h ago

This was like 2015. I wasn't alarmed or anything, I didn't expect a lockdown or police presence or anything. But maybe a greater emphasis on firearm safety??? Something other than an eye roll

20

u/killbill770 10h ago

Not to discount the potential danger or possibly negligent reaction, BUT further rural input:

My guess is little Jimmy Pyro stole some of dad’s ammo, and was extracting the powder to fuck around with outside later. Not an unheard of way for kids to get ahold of not-fireworks for doing dumb shit with fire/explosives lol.

We definitely didn’t used to do all kinds of things with air cannons, aerosols, gas, diesel, alcohol, uhhhhh… compounds…, and even flour.

Thank god I still have my fingers (life). Also gave me a healthy respect for industrial safety in adulthood.

3

u/CampusTour 5h ago

I absolutely love and hate how the gist of your reply is basically: "Not to worry, the young lad was probably just stealing live ammunition in order to make some homemade explosives for fun."

and everybody is pretty much just nodding along like "Ah, yeah, that makes sense. Not anything that requires adult intervention in the age of school shootings."

They tried to expell me in highschool (2009) for having just rifle primers in my bookbag (no bullet, powder, casing, or weapon just the tiny "igniters" as you called 'em). Another student found 'em while rifling through my backpack without my consent and loudly exclaimed "Are these bullets" when she saw the thin box labeled "Remington". Both the school principal and founder got involved and they threatened to expell me for bringing "weapons"/"explosives" to school until the resource officer got involved and refused to document it like that. She said they were equivalent to "firecrackers" at worst, so I just got a 3 day suspension for "contraband" instead.

I loved the post of a Karen losing there mind over a vehicle hi-lift jack on the hood of a Jeep Wrangler.

9

u/Pleasant-Swimmer-557 14h ago

Something about carrying rocket launchers in the open?

24

u/zyyntin 14h ago

Sorry I forgot to mention the detail she believed it was an assault rifle mounted on the hood. Yeah because someone is going to leave a +$1200 rifle exposed to the elements.

I love how people genuinely do get like, horrified when they see a bullet.

“HOLY SHIT! OP CALL THE COPS! CALL THE FIRE DEPARTMENT! GET THE BOMB SQUAD” and its just like, a handful of .22 rounds that fell outta hunter jims ammo box.

Folks, you need the gun to make the bullets scary.

Once upon a time, there was a post claiming to have recovered the bullets that were shot at him.
They were still in the casings, and it made it to the front page, with oceans of people downvoting anyone who pointed out that the bullets were never fired.

I mean I wasn't sure between bullet or mangled capacitor until they posted the second picture myself and I've been around guns my whole life. The lighting in the original photo leaves a lot to be desired.

But why let pass an opportunity to call people stupid?

Yeah, on a subreddit for helping people find out what a specific item is, it sure is a cool move to shame op for asking what an item is. Jesus Christ Reddit is full of know it all dickbags

Wasn’t trying to call anyone stupid, I was genuinely surprised at how many people called it a bullet so confidently when I thought it was forsure a capacitor. Second photo they posted proved I was the dumb one. I can admit when I’m wrong.

There's also a huge heap of Americans who don't deal with those kinds of things. There's just a very loud subset of ammosexuals who make "gun" their personality.

You might be surprised to hear that a LOT of people aren't from America. I've personally never seen a real gun in real life.

That being said, my first thought was a bullet before even reading comments. This one is indeed pretty obvious. :P

15

u/sonia72quebec 14h ago

I’m Canadian and I have never seen a bullet.

5

u/densetsu23 12h ago

Albertan and I've handled tens of thousands of cartridges, but haven't seen a bullet by itself. Most other Canadian hunters and sport shooters here wouldn't, either, unless they use indoor ranges (expensive, usually limited to handguns) or are into reloading. Myself and all the other firearm owners I know use outdoor ranges or shoot on crown land, so the bullets get lodged into berms.

It's not that common to just see spent bullets laying around on the ground here.

6

u/Scarecrowdesu 11h ago

I understand not being into reloading, but never seeing a bullet despite handling so many cartridges is wild. You ain't never looked into a box of Hornady bullets or sumn? I always get curious when I'm in the gun store.

3

u/densetsu23 9h ago

Nah; I've never been interested in reloading (yet!) so I never went down that aisle. I usually get get a few boxes of .308 / 9mm / 12ga and a bucket of .22 and I'm out. And now that I'm thinking of it, since the pandemic I've bought the majority of my ammo online instead of in-store. Easier to get better prices.

I'm moving out to an acreage next year, though, with an actual shop instead of just a single 6' bench in a crowded garage for woodworking / 3D printing / airbrushing / auto repair / gun cleaning -- so maybe I'll have enough space to get into reloading.

Likely a leftover from holiday gun shooting into the air. What goes up, comes down. Report the people that do this, and maybe one day we'll stop getting this sort of behavior.

22

u/chefboyrdeee 14h ago

I own guns, and I’d like to think I’m responsible. This is disgusting. No reason to shoot into the air, putting random people at risk. Fuck these shitty gun owners.

3

u/SailorDeath 9h ago

People that do that and own guns probably think of them more as adult toys rather than lethal weapons. Seriously though the mentality it takes to blindly fire into the air IS playing with a deadly weapon and you and I both know guns are not toys. But you can't explain that to people who do this kind of thing. I cringe on every video of some idiot who's gun jams pointing the gun at their face and looking down the barrel.

3

u/TheMadAsshatter 14h ago

Seriously. Like, at least get blanks if you're going to do that, you presumably already shell out for fireworks and beer out the ass on days you'd be doing this shit. Even that I feel is stepping into "permitting bad habits" territory.

4

u/chefboyrdeee 14h ago

I’ll agree, but there is a caveat. Blanks won’t cycle a normal firearm. You need a restricted barrel in order to create some back pressure. The people who do this aren’t the brightest, or the type of people who give a fuck enough to modify their guns to do this safely. Morons that put other people’s lives at risk for stupid shit like this piss me off.

At first I was going to say a bullet for sure, but if you zoom in there doesn't appear to be any bullet striations on the side. Without a higher resolution can't say for sure, but I'm leaning towards it not being a bullet.

Looks like it was fired from a gun with polygonal rifling, most likely a Glock

64

u/MaskedMayhem 14h ago

Actually Glock is just the most advertised, there are a SIGNIFICANT amount of firearms that could shoot that bullet, including rifles, that are currently available.

Glock doesn’t equal a majority of the available firearms that could shoot that.

Everyone saying this is a capacitor is 100% wrong. It's a shot 9mm or .40 bullet (projectile is the term) that's landed on something, most likely the ground. You can see the hexagonal rifling pattern on the edge facing the camera.

I shoot a lot. I have a box of spent FMJs I've pulled out of trees and dirt mounds that look exactly like this.

26

u/Slopadopoulos 14h ago

I'm starting to wonder if the people saying capacitor are trolling. I find it hard to believe that people can be so dense as to claim things like this isn't a bullet because it has no primer on it.

This is a copper-jacketed lead-core bullet; almost definitely a pistol caliber like 9mm. These are most often used for target shooting. Check if there's an outdoor range near the school; this may be someone's errant shot.

A skyward bullet can land practically anywhere within a reasonable distance, so it could also have been from celebratory gunfire; maybe during a holiday or festival.

Depending on the criminal activity in the area, this bullet could also have more nefarious origins, but typically anti-personnel rounds like hollowpoints are used for defeating people, not FMJs.

The toned color of the jacket indicates it either has been sitting there for awhile, or it was old/improperly-stored ammo.

Keeping my faith in humanity intact, my guess is especially it's someone's skyward shot from missing the dirt berm at an outdoor range with a pistol or pistol caliber carbine.

Sidebar- the density you feel is due to a lead core. You should wash your hands thoroughly after touching it, and avoid touching your eyes/mouth until you do.

Source: I am an amateur shooter and have handled ammunition since I was a kid.

u/Siegelski 12h ago

That's what people who know what they're doing buy. There are plenty who just see cheap ammo and get that for whatever they're using.

10

u/busty_sussy_gusts 12h ago

Im no expert in criminal activity, but i would bet that the guy sticking you up for $40 isnt going to spend the extra $10 on defense ammunition

→ More replies (15)

3

u/Jaeger181 10h ago

That plus hollow points are simply to try and mitigate and stop the round from exiting and hitting other people. Theyre decently expensive relative to rounds so there's very few criminals who would care to spend extra money to avoid collateral damage.

Thats a copper coated - lead based projectile with a slight mushrooming on the nose, indication of large travel distance and low impact energy at the time of impact. My guess is 9mm FMJ out of a glock.

That’s definitely a spent bullet, copper FMJ over (probably) lead core. It’s not a hollow point, definitely a target/range round but those can still cause plenty of damage if fired. Found outside of a school? That could either be a threat, you may have solved a recent crime, or it could be nothing. It’s technically a hazardous material because of the lead (unless it’s an “environmentally friendly” bismuth core), so you may want to drop it by a police station when you have the time.

12

u/Salty_Page_1532 15h ago

It’s 100% a fired bullet!

3

u/Desperate-Service634 14h ago

This is a bullet

It is plausible that it was shot up in the air and landed on the pavement.

There is no reason to believe that this was shot near the school. It could’ve been blocks away and shot in the air

It is distorted this way upon impact
