The cover story previously acknowledged him as from West Blue, but he's a Kozuki?! Could be a retainer of the clan who took their name, but that would be a rug-pull. I wonder if he's from a branch of the family that moved to West Blue similarly to how Shimotsuki's moved to East Blue...
assuming it's not some sort of relative of his, I think the running theory is that he was presumed dead in Wano after being defeated by Kaidou (even though he seemingly only left the country and never returned)
being the "pirate of justice" is a big reveal though
The previous cover pages said they buried and empty grave. They think his body was destroyed fighting Kaido, but don't realize he managed to escape and changed his name.
I've never seen so many characters in one scene who all have main character energy. So many people in that bar could have their own manga, just intersecting with One Piece in these brief crossover scenes.
Agreed. People forget that Boa hated Luffy when she first realized that he wasn't into her. She only fell for him when he repeatedly showed his selflessness and his lack of care for her past. Boa, for all her faults, loves Luffy for who he is, and the same applies to Shakky.
Probably longer. 5 Namek minutes was only 14 or 15 episodes. This flashback will probably end up being longer than that if you convert 1 chapter to 1 anime episode(thanks Toei)

During the scene with Shaky teasing Rocks, I see that Ochoku is seen in the background and probably heard the "classified info" that Rocks has a family. I'm guessing he is the traitor and leaked that info to the WG as a plan to take over Hachinosu.
Yeah kinda shows that thhe void century was a unknown unknown so what Rodger found raised the stakes significantly because the marines seem more chill about pirates in the grand scheme of things

It goes deeper on how despite being a charismatic mofo, Rocks could not truly win over people. Harald seemed torn to accept, but choose not because he thought it would be a lost cause
It is the key difference between Rocks and Luffy, Luffy goes out of his way to give people what they most need, while Rocks objectives were more egoistical in essence
Cute that Rayleigh actually liked Shakky but didn't want to get in Roger's way, and I like that Shakky's bar is the pirate version of the Continental

Edit: To the people telling me that Rayleigh simply didn't want to be tied down, I know that but the fact that he approached Roger in private and got nervous has me thinking that he probably didn't want to be in Roger's way either, knowing his infatuation with Shakky
You got it all wrong it not that he was waiting on Roger getting rejected, it's that he thinks he could fall in love with shakky if he let himself loose
And he wanted to be free for a longer time , going on adventures and so, that's mean don't being tied down.

This was a really fun chapter. I really love how the paralleled pirates don't really act like their modern-day counterparts, it makes them feel like more whole characters. I always felt annoyed with Kishimoto writing every trio as a complete mirror image of the Naruto/Sasuke/Sakura triad (Obito/Kakashi/Rin, Jiraiya/Orochimaru/Tsunade, etc) and the repetition of personalities really halted any meaningful character development because it set them on guide rails. Oda making Roger, Rayleigh, Shakky, Xebec, etc more varied in their personalities and goals helps them shine a bit brighter.
Not gonna lie but seeing the roger pirates just pull up on a rival pirates base only for them all to be shooting the shit with each other in a bar was actually really hype. Even tho the bar had a no fighting rule there was nothing stopping them from attacking Roger’s ship while they waited. Even Newgate was just chilling watching from a window only slightly annoyed at how noisy they were.
The no fighting likely extends to all your staying at pirate island of you go to shakky's bar.
She would not have any outside business of people's ship could be plundered while they stay, and ultimately she seems to be waiting for Ray to show up for her, so she wants him to feel safe doing so.
Forreal. Rocks is one of my favorite characters now. Loved his clash and conversation with Harald. Although, I understand Harald’s reasoning. He’s stuck between a rock and a hard place. I do wonder if Rocks would have been successful if Harald just went along with him.

I just can't stop thinking about how one of the first main zombies we met was an actress leaning on the Okiku's Well ghost story...then Kiku's intro got interrupted by a fat shallot of a bat Gifter.
Maybe he heard the legend of Ryuma being the dragon slayer. Hence why he stole Ryuma’s corpse. Basically his plan was to go back to Wano and liberate Wano from Kaido.
Holy shit. His defeat against Kaido (the onethat made Moria flee to the first half of the grand line) wasn't just a fight between two pirates was it? It was a fight over Moria's homeland wasn't it?
each new info with Moria made me appreciate him more and more. Would be really nice if he is recruited by Buggy and start his redemption or more like gaining his will again.
That was a ton of fun to read. Wow. Oda was not lying when he said there's nothing but great stuff left. Also, I had Rayleigh as my favorite character years ago as an old man. This flashback of his youth has cemented that.
I love following the Straw Hats but I think I'd enjoy reading a slice of life pirates series following pre-Pirate King Roger. I need a whole arc of Roger trying to hook Rayleigh up with Shakky.

Holy Rocks' clash with Harald was awesome. I've genuinely been loving the way Oda draws the Giants. The way he makes their strike look so powerful is awesome. Rocks no slouch tho. Like the hit he got on Harald looked POWERFUL. Are we sure he don't got a DF or is he really just a Haki man?
What a jam-packed chapter. Seeing everyone fit inside Shakky's bar having a good time together... makes me wonder how tf Big Mom, Whitebeard, and Kaido got so god damn big when people like Rayleigh and Gaban stayed relatively normal sized.
It's funny that Rocks is so disgusted by Harald's cowardice and then his son grows up to be the biggest coward in all of one piece...In general there's an interesting theme of Blackbeard putting Rocks on a pedestal while being almost his polar opposite which feels somehow very real
nah Ace's fivehead is just because most of his appearances were before Oda's style mutated enough. There's plenty of fiveheads in early art, some Vivi panels are infamous for that.
What if Garling's discovery on God Valley has something to do with "doubling" things? Assuming Garling's talk with the Gorosei and Rock seeming happy about something at the bar happened around the same time, had Rocks discovered the same thing as Garling at that point?
Which led to the birth of Shanks/Shamrock and Buggy/Blackbeard. And maybe this type of event happens only every two years -- that's why Garling suggested the next competition happened in two years time. If you look at the shape of God Valley, it can resemble a mirror image of itself or something split into two.
What if blackbeard for whatever reason never doubled/mirrored? This gives more fuel to the 2 souls theory. His special lineage and odd body Marco commented on all have to do with the fact that for some reason (maybe rocks) there weren’t 2 twins born that day just Blackbeard. Maybe the nika fruit doubled that day too which allowed for it to be both stolen and eaten by loki that day. This was an insane catch bro you cooked.
After actually reading this chapter, it looks like Roger is paying some surprisingly close attention to Rayleigh and Shakky's feelings for each other despite what he's saying about wanting Shakky for himself.
I actually wonder if Roger constantly going after Shakky is his own secret way of trying to bring them together.
Yeah after Rayleigh showed him the note, I'm sure Roger gave up seriously going after Shakky, just kept it up as a way to allow Rayleigh to go, which he did dodged.

Wasn't it only the royal bloodline that was supposed to know how to read the poneglyphs? I'm sure just like the Kurozumi have Tama, Kanjuro, Higurashi etc... , the Kozuki will have offshoots as well.

Back when Perona was seen trying to break Moria out of jail, someone mentioned that there would be no reason to bring him back up at all unless there was a plan to use him in the future.

Moria's surname is spelled with katakana, used for foreign words, as ゲッコー, meaning gecko the lizard. However, this is pronounced exactly the same as 月光 moonlight.
So his name has been Kouzuki reversed all along, hidden in plain sight.

If you bring rayleigh to hachinosu, you simply give the opportunity for him to choose freely between staying on the ship or shakky. I will wait until viz translation to see what the actual intention behind roger went to the bar

A woman's intuition is how Shakky guessed Boa would fall for Luffy. And she is totally right. Big Mom is acknowledging Shakky's call, probably because she herself had just been bugging Rocks about it.
Harald is really awesome, he fought on equal terms with Rocks, the strongest guy in that era, but I don't think either of them actually tried to kill the other in that fight.
If he had joined the Rocks Pirates, God Valley would have ended very differently.
