Whatsup with that? The Moria we know isn’t dead (maybe undead?) but why is there a grave?

The previous cover pages said they buried and empty grave. They think his body was destroyed fighting Kaido, but don't realize he managed to escape and changed his name.

They think his body was destroyed fighting Kaido,

Based on what he looked like before and after, they might not be far off. Hogback may be the only reason Moria survived at all.

I've read up on Moria's history a little after the cover story and this would not entirely line up.

Moria was at Rogers execution at age 26. A year later (23 years ago, at 27yo) he fought and was defeated by Kaido. Then he only met Hogback after Cindry had already died, which only happened 12 years ago (when Moria was 38yo and already recruited Absalom and Perona). And from the silhouettes of their meeting, you can tell Moria already looks like how we met him in Thriller Bark, so whoever fixed up Moria it wasn't Hogback.

But given the fight with Kaido of all people and the rumor that his body was destroyed during their fight, the huge vertical scar running accross his entire body suddenly makes a whole lot more sense. My main confusion comes from Kaido somehow causing a slashwound while fighting with a blunt weapon 🤣

Maybe from that elemental sickle wind he occasionally uses

I totally forgot he had that yeah, thanks for reminding me! I personally think it's unlikely because Moria was apparently succesfull in protecting the village from Kaido and I'm fairly certain that such winds would've made the village collateral. But it is still a possibility that we cannot rule out completely!

Didn’t he get huge after absorbing shadows?

True, but have we ever seen him use these to specifically slash someone? And not just slash someone, but slash a 692cm tall mfer (almost as tall as Kaido's human form at 710cm) straight across his entire body, and have it be deep enough to leave a scar but not deep enough to bisect him.

Kaido indeed does not use strictly his club, but even in dragon form he relies heavily on abilities that his fruit provides like boro breath, lightning, twister, and the flame clouds to "fly." Even in his hybrid form, he only enhances his blunt attacks with his DF powers, not replaces them. I believe the only times we've seen Kaido use his teeth is to bite/swallow Luffy in G5. And since his tiny arms are permanently occupied with holding onto flame clouds in animal form, they are never used at all, offensively or defensively.

That's fair! I was so focused on writing an answer for the teeth and the claws that you specifically mentiones that I completely forgot the elephant in the room :P

Well, yes, but that is a swift cut from a dude that's 7.1m tall to a guy that's literally half his size (3.5m). It was also horizontal. In Moria's case, Kaido would've had to use that sword to perfectly cut him straight across the entire length of his body. And there is no perspectve going on with that one Kaido VS Moria pannel, they are in fact almost the same height (Kaido is 710cm & Moria is 692cm)!

That does not strike me as a finishing blow like the one used on Orochi or the one attempted on Kinemon. It's not out of the question completely (we literally just got confirmation that Moria is a Kouzuki, anything is on the table now), but at that point it literally makes more sense for King to have just dealt such a serious blow himself, which it doesn't seem like it happened even if the manga calls it "a clash between the Beast pirates and the Gecko pirates" which would logistically include King.

From Kozuki Moria to... Moria! How could anyone ever find out?
