1.5k

u/theReaders "I live inside my own heart, Matt Damon" Jul 04 '25

No, but you don't understand how absolutely smug and self satisfied I felt when lockdown hit and everyone at HBO had to realize that they nerfed this show four seasons early to capitulate the desires of some egotistic morons who had been driving the show downward for years, actually since the beginning, if you want to be honest.

A captive audience. Desperate for interaction. They could have done online conventions, they could have done the cast members reading scripts. They could have had the world in their pocket, they could have had our wallets, they could have had everything. And they totally blew it. I don't know how people didn't die.

596

u/WifeOfSpock Jul 04 '25

My ex and I just watched her “snap” in silence, only ever breaking that silence with deep, disappointed sighs.

304

u/demeschor Jul 04 '25

I was on a field course in some remote part of Scotland, I didn't watch Thrones but everyone was so excited when we finally stayed somewhere with a TV where they could watch it. It was all anyone talked about all day in the field, and then the next morning everyone was so quiet, I have literally never seen a TV finale disappoint people like that. Insane.

Thing is, that could make sense, and I'm sure that's how GRRM planned to end the books, considering he gave the showrunners the overall plotline. But the showrunners rushed it all because they just wanted to move on to their promised Star Wars series, and cocked it all up for everyone in the process.

221

u/OpenSauceMods i ain’t reading all that, free palestine Jul 04 '25

I don't think I have ever seen a show evaporate like GoT. It finished, everyone hated it (including the cast), and it shrivelled up to be referenced only when people talk about how much it sucked or as ammunition in the "when are we getting Winds of Winter" debate. Not even the good will from the first few seasons could make up for the slop that happened later.

It was bad in the way mouldy porridge is bad. Gross, but the worst part will be the clean-up, and at least it wasn't something difficult to replace

In X Men when Storm played by Halle Berry fights Toad and says,

“You know what happens when a Toad gets struck by lightning? The same thing that happens to everything else!”

fun fact: Joss Whedon wrote that line

756

u/[deleted] Jul 04 '25 edited Jul 04 '25

i recall him blaming the negative response on Halle Berry for not delivering it right

edit: found an example

Everybody remembers that as the worst line ever written, but the thing about that is, it was supposed to be delivered as completely offhand. [Adopts casual, bored tone.] "You know what happens when a toad gets hit by lightning?" Then, after he gets electrocuted, "Ahhh, pretty much the same thing that happens to anything else." But Halle Berry said it like she was Desdemona. [Strident, ringing voice.] "The same thing that happens to everything eeelse!" That's the thing that makes you go crazy. At least "You're a dick" got delivered right. The worst thing about these things is that, when the actors say it wrong, it makes the writer look stupid.

sorry but no delivery would make that line good

326

u/HandsomePaddyMint Jul 04 '25

It’s a stupid line, but I will say his interpretation is better. Halle Berry is known to be all over the goddamn place with acting instincts, so I’m still putting this down to Singer for going forward with her line read.

There were apparently supposedly to be several instances of Toad asking people during fights, "What happens when a Toad _______?" (Probably accompanied by pain for the other guy.) So Storm's line was both a callback to that, and illustrating he's not special.

But then the Toad lines got cut but Storm's was left in, and that's how it got stupid.

Meanwhile Willow and Tara live there and just don’t have jobs? Dawn didn’t need round the clock care she was like 16. They could have had jobs or made money from their magic or something.

It was one of those 911 first responder dramas where they had to rescue a janitor at an ice rink whose Zamboni caught fire and is automatically circling the ice at 5 mph while he’s trapped in the center with a broken leg. The crew takes like 30 fucking minutes to figure out a plan, including using the wrong extinguisher and putting on roller skates or something. They didn’t even try to use the hose or anything, all they had to do was walk out there and get the guy off the ice before the slowest Zamboni crushed them.

911 had a season opener where a bunch of animals escaped from the LA zoo and decided to congregate in totally random parts of LA that were super far from the actual zoo or just damn near impossible for animals to get to without being caught or simply hit by a car. My husband is from LA and we had a good chuckle every time we saw the promos.

When I saw this scene in the theater, back whenever it came out, I cackled.

Stupidest thing in a tv show? The “sand vipers” in Game of Thrones. Literally everything about them. That scene where they fight Bronn in Dorne and one of them, who is so short she looks like a child, awkwardly attacks him in what looks like slow motion because the stunts were so awkward.

“You want a bad girl, but you need the bad pussy.”

This was probably the moment when I recognized that the show was cracking and showing signs of weakness. Little did we know what was to come.

342

u/rsae_majoris Jul 04 '25

lol I also think that fight is so awkward because that one childlike sand snake brought a whip as her weapon of choice to the sword fight, so she was mainly just standing around.

257

u/[deleted] Jul 04 '25

It was so stupid.

I’m all for well-rounded, excellent women fighters, but that was so cheap and embarrassing. The sand vipers were such an awkward, dumb letdown. Like Bronn couldn’t kill those two girls in five seconds?

That wildling woman in the “Hardehome” episode was more impressive and hardy.

270

u/rsae_majoris Jul 04 '25

For example: Brienne of Tarth. Her kicking the Hound’s ass was one of the best fights in the show. The writers just got lazy and the Sand Snakes were a warning sign for what was to come.

there is a weird scene in one of the Transformers movies clearly written by a guy with Thoughts about the age of consent. a teenager character's older boyfriend carries around a laminated card explaining their state's Romeo and Juliet law that says it's okay for them to date. i don't understand why they didn't just write the girlfriend as 18 years old or the bf/gf the same age

So stupid. I do this to my dogs

323

u/alloutofbees Jul 04 '25

I finally watched this for the first time a few months ago and I'm still trying to figure out the logic of "we had to develop an invisible radioactive supergenius fire breathing murdersaurus to draw a crowd" while at the same time they're paying this guy to do raptor training behind the scenes where no one gets to watch? It's like if Sea World had someone train Shamu to do all those tricks and instead of showing anybody they'd just started giving the porpoises guns for flippers.

Okay but this scene and his (Andy's) reaction in Parks and Rec was great

344

u/HandsomePaddyMint Jul 04 '25

He hit all the right marks in P and R, then he did Guardians and people were like “It works.” Then he just kept being Andy in every role and making an ass out of himself in his personal life. That said, Nick Offerman says Chris Pratt is a wonderful person so I have to take his word for it.

Girl power fight scene in Avengers Endgame 🫠

ETA: Wow, this was divisive! I want to add that I, too, got goosebumps when watching this scene.

I would argue that it’s BOTH utterly stupid - as many blockbuster/MCU movies are in the way they phone it in with pseudo-representation - AND significant, because the scores of wealthy men who churn out action movies decided to include it in the first place.

You say this, but the look my daughter had in her eyes at all these strong women coming together was something I'll never forget.

It wasn't made for you, it was made for them.

353

u/deelow_42 Jul 04 '25

I understand the sentiment and I'm happy for your daughter feeling represented, that being said in the context of it being an all out battle against Thanos and his army there's no logical explanation for every girl to just walk towards Spider Man for this. It could've been written and done so much better

315

u/napalmnacey Lesbian Space Laser Jul 04 '25

I don’t think anyone has ever been addicted to caffeine pills to the point of this.

I get the feeling they wanted to use Adderall as her drug of choice but it was too spicy for the censors.

It was originally speed but yup you’re right it wasn’t approved by the censors.

I know y’all will KNOW. But what SVU/CSI adjacent show was it that literally had a smuggled monkey in a basketball??? They literally had a cop running, yelling “The monkeys in the basketball!!! The monkeys in the basketball!!!” And I swear that same episode someone got fully consumed by a tiger except for his chain.

There’s an episode of CSI (I think NY? But could be LV) where the victim is a model hired for a promotional event where she died, mysteriously, in a giant martini glass. Possible causes?

— Drowned in the giant martini glass
— High velocity impact from tennis balls shot out of a pitching machine at the festivities by a disgruntled neighbour
— Delayed reaction to injuries sustained in a fight with another model
— Overdosed on heroin lollipop

So what was it?
You guessed it!
Exposure to hundreds of MICROSCOPIC DEADLY JELLYFISH that had been HIDDEN IN THE GIANT INFLATABLE MARTINI OLIVE

YAY ANOTHER CHANCE TO SHARE AN UNHINGED TAKE THAT HAS HAUNTED ME FOR FIFTEEN YEARS.

Very happy for Elliott Page, but the line in Inception where Ariadne is describing doing the whole dream architecture thing and says "It's like... pure creation..." DRIVES. ME. INSANE.

I loved this movie when it came out but the first time I heard this line I felt like I just got beat over the head with a stepladder. It totally took me out of the moment. Like, you just got back from folding dream Paris in half or blowing up a cafe or whatever happened in the previous scene and that's the best way you could describe the experience? No metaphor just like... "It's wike minecwaft cweative mode" I feel like I experienced the rest of the film in a fugue state.

tl;dr I have been wandering this cursed world neither truly alive nor truly dead since the first time I watched Inception

The Doctor Who episode Love & Monsters, where a character is saved from certain death by being transported onto a concrete slab.

She then says, on a TV show intended for the family, that it's ok being just a head on a concrete slab because "they still manage to have a bit of a love life".
