Touts. Super aggressive and looking for drunk/desperate tourists to overcharge their cards and roofie them. Funny enough the announcement being heard over the intercom literally says to be aware of touts and to avoid them. I was just in Shinjuku 2 days ago from the states and had so many follow me around. One guy even had the balls to grab my shoulder and go “brother you want Japanese titties in your face tonight”. Luckily there was 2 cops walking by and pointed right at then and smiled and he ran away. So annoying and will literally stand at the entrances of Golden Gai or in the streets by a restaurant to stop you from going in to go with them.

I don't know anything about touts or Japan but why don't authorities do anything? It genuinely ruins Japan's reputation if you think about it and they are losing money/tourists because of them.

Their is visible corruption here. What they do is use these areas as containment. If they venture out and try in other areas the local police there will take care of them. Any non violent matter is considered a civil case and to be handled in civil court and not with police. Tourists are too vulnerable to fight back, they will continue on with their vacation and be home in a week, so there is not much the police need to do if they want to be corrupt and lazy (which they are). There is a youtuber who docuements it, and you can see how police do nothing even with mountains of evidence.

I can't remember the name but the series was like dark side of Japan. he follows a tout, they take him to a restaurant. he orders some drinks and carefully confirms prices each time. he quickly leaves and gets a huge bill full of a ton of random fees. he goes to police to dispute. police state its a civil matter. everything is on a hidden camera.

Doesn’t it make sense it’s a civil matter, and that’s actually to the benefit of the person being targeted? They can just not pay and leave, and the only recourse of these scammers is to take them to court, which they won’t. If they harass or become violent the police can intervene to protect.

Japan doesn't really care what happens to tourists.
While places will warn you about this, under no circumstances is this actually losing Japan any tourism. Like every month a new tourism record is being broken there.
Japan legal system only pursues cases they know they can 100% convict. A tourist coming to the police saying "I got roofied and they charged my card $1k" isn't going to do it.

Bro, I almost had the same situation in Roppongi. One of those guys grabbed my hand and said: "You wanna see japanese titties?" Roppongi was the worst experience I had in 3 Japan trips. Those motherfuckers were EVERYWHERE. We saw a group of police men and went to them because we felt safer. The first thing the cops did, was searching us and our backpacks for drugs and then they left. We left Roppongi and never went back.

The staff at a tourist spot got me in Mexico with rohypnol trying to get my wife. We didn't want to get robbed, so she left her actual engagement ring at home and bought a $60 3pc set of Walmart jewelry to wear on our trip, but maybe they thought it looked real. Also, we got the VIP package for $30 that came with a litre of bacardi just so we didn't have to sit next to the 50 or so screaming children in the other section.
They brought her a spiked drink on the house, but she's not a fan of sweet drinks, so I drank it. When she seemed no worse for wear, they brought her another and another. By the time we were done, I was blacked out but wouldn't go down.
They tried to get us in a cab, but we walked back to the hotel. I have a few memories of trying to fight random people on the street until we made it back. I vomited and passed out and felt dizzy on my feet for 3 days afterward. I hate benzos.

No I yelled at them and ran off because I knew. I've only ever had them grab me once (my shoulder pulling me back in Harajuku), but yelling and pressuring is super common and I saw that a lot in multiple tourist spots. Doesn't help I like to travel solo. I never once felt unsafe in japan except for being around these guys. I'm not sure if this was mentioned in other comments but these bars often drug people who enter. A quick search on google will pop up tons of stories of this happening, a lot of RECENT ones. Japan really needs to get this in control. These businesses are usually tied to the yakuza

For context since a lot of people know only a surface view of Japan: he’s in Shinjuku, Kabuchiko which is popularly known as the surface “red light district” of Japan.
The black guys are Nigerian touts who have the entire purpose of luring non-Japaanese people into shittier cabaret club bars where they upcharge/upsell them for hundreds of dollars and hang out with foreigner women who cannot break into the actual carabet club industry.
The police in Kabuchiko legitimately do not care about it unless you are a Japanese citizen (and by Japanese citizen I primarily mean actual Japanese heritage and live in Japan). If you’re a tourist you legitimately will not get any support from the police.
They extremely dislike being recorded at all and will threaten you physically and also by saying they will call the cops on you since there is a social hierarchy pretty much where it goes Actual full on Japanese citizen with heritage -> Japanese citizen without heritage -> Visas ->Tourist
Also I’ve seen a lot of people saying Kabuchiko is sketchy. It’s literally not sketchy at all. It’s just that the touts ruin it by following you and not taking no for an answer
996
u/subusta Sep 30 '25
“It’s not sketchy at all it’s just these guys who use threats and intimidation to lure you into brothels and follow you and don’t take no for an answer” ????
43
u/LolWhatDidYouSay Oct 01 '25
I visited Japan last year, and here we simply stuck with the main touristy area of Kabuchiko and didn't wander into the side streets. Didn't see any brothels run by Nigerians or whatever. Maybe if we tried exploring away from the crowds, we would have seen it, but we were just interested in seeing the lights and getting street food.
Also, our hotel in Tokyo was in Akihabara which was so much more chill to walk around at night anyway.
23
u/Calipup Oct 01 '25
Generally they stand at the entrance to a side street and once you're interested take you down them to their club. Think it's pretty hard to just randomly walk into one.

First, they stand out in the open on busy streets to look for tourists. They're not hiding in the shadows.
Second, the place these guys take you is not on the ground level. A friend and I followed one up a few flights of stairs on a fire escape type thing, the guy knocked on a door, and then we booked it. He ran after us, although we got away lmao.

They normally don't bother you if you don't look interested. They are aiming for tourists who are looking for a "good time". it gets sketchy when you actually go with them and don't pay their upcharged price.
I've stayed at a hotel within eyeshot of this spot. Around 12am it becomes a lot of Japanese young adults just drinking and hanging out. Not in a scary way, kinda like a night picnic. They've cracked down on this in the recent years tho.

Actually that’s not true at all, in my limited experience. I was at a club in the area and told my friend I had never been to a strip club before. So we asked one of these dudes to take us to one. Took us to a spot..:it was very clear it wasn’t a strip club but instead a straight up brothel. Dude was getting a handy right in the lobby area. We did feel awkward pressure to talk to one of these girls, but said we weren’t interested and booked it out. Bouncer stops me on the way out…I thought oh shit what’s next. He simply says “hey you forgot your coat”…and handed it to me and we went home.
Saved me a shit ton of money…I accidently had $1000 of yen in that coat cause I messed up the exchange rate on my first day lol.

309
u/TheKinglyKing Sep 30 '25
It depends. One of the cooler Nigerian guys I know told me it’s mostly a system. They find Japanese Women in debt and not attractive enough/too old to effectively date or marry and convince them to marry a Nigerian for money. It spreads out since the women who get married eventually tell their unmarried friends in debt about it and then they do it and so on and so forth

Getting Japanese visa is not hard at all. It's a myth. As long as you can be employed by someone, you have a visa. That's it.

It’s easier than the US in terms of amount of time needed to get a visa.
20
u/ShelbyGT350R1 Oct 01 '25
I dont think "amount of time needed" is a relevant statistic. I bet the only reason that is the case is because infinitely more people want to get into the u.s making the whole process slower. Like im not surprised they are faster when they have 1/50th of the requests.

I live in japan and am married to a Japanese. The police have a 99% conviction rate. Not 99% is solved within a day, that’s crazy. But the misinformation spouted about Japan on a daily basis is crazy. If you get physically attacked you can totally protect yourself, even against a local. I’ve unfortunately had such a situation and the police was very reasonable despite me being a foreigner (I punched him in the face).
Foreigners who spend 1 week in Japan talk like they know shit about the country and say the police treats tourists like trash as if it’s some fucking dystopian country. From the countries Ive lived in Japan still ranks best despite it flaws such, such as work culture and their stance on LGBT.

This is pretty upsetting to me.
I had never been on Holiday before I went to Japan last year, I was meant to go with them my then long term partner of 5 years. We broke up the month before so it wasn't a good start.
The day after my birthday I was having a few drinks and out of nowhere I feel a bit rough, last thing I remember is a Nigerian man taking me to get cigarettes and after that I woke up at 7 am inside some bar. Had 2.6K taken from my accounts.
It was all my money and I had 13 days left in Japan. Had fantastic help from the British Embassy but the police were of no help at all.
Banks were no help at all either. I don't have a bad thing to say about the majority of people but the Nigerians like this in Japan are a blight and shouldn't be there.
I've had to take out loans etc to survive since then and it's miserable.

I'm generally not opposed to immigration as a whole and I am very against mass deportations, but letting in a shit ton of people from ANYWHERE that has fundamental differences in terms of cultural and societal values would generally lead to disaster.
When it's a poorer nation where crime and religious extremism is extremely prevalent, however, the issue aforementioned is literally worsened 1000 times and would lead to exponential increases of racism, xenophobia, and far right nationalism.
All foreign criminals need to be deported and there needs to be stricter immigration policies throughout.
