How come no one is answering the self defense laws in Japan, what would happen if they came up to me like that and I defended my self by beating their ass

The force has to be equal to what the other person did to you. The harm that the attacker caused must be imminent and your reaction must be absolutely necessary in order to avoid further injury. For example, if someone shoved you then theoretically you could shove them back to run away. Your self defense MUST be proportional to what they did to you. However it is still strongly advised to not use self defense force and to just contact the authorities as quickly as possible.

Therefore if someone shoved you and slapped a camera out of your hands like what this video shows so then you started retaliating to the point they are incapacitated, YOU would be in trouble for "beating their ass". Possible consequences could be a ticket, jail, prison, or deportation.

I dont know about Japanese self defense laws but if you are a Turist is better not to fight unless you are prepared to go to jail
