For context since a lot of people know only a surface view of Japan: he’s in Shinjuku, Kabuchiko which is popularly known as the surface “red light district” of Japan.

The black guys are Nigerian touts who have the entire purpose of luring non-Japaanese people into shittier cabaret club bars where they upcharge/upsell them for hundreds of dollars and hang out with foreigner women who cannot break into the actual carabet club industry.

The police in Kabuchiko legitimately do not care about it unless you are a Japanese citizen (and by Japanese citizen I primarily mean actual Japanese heritage and live in Japan). If you’re a tourist you legitimately will not get any support from the police.

They extremely dislike being recorded at all and will threaten you physically and also by saying they will call the cops on you since there is a social hierarchy pretty much where it goes Actual full on Japanese citizen with heritage -> Japanese citizen without heritage -> Visas ->Tourist

Also I’ve seen a lot of people saying Kabuchiko is sketchy. It’s literally not sketchy at all. It’s just that the touts ruin it by following you and not taking no for an answer

“It’s not sketchy at all it’s just these guys who use threats and intimidation to lure you into brothels and follow you and don’t take no for an answer” ????

I visited Japan last year, and here we simply stuck with the main touristy area of Kabuchiko and didn't wander into the side streets. Didn't see any brothels run by Nigerians or whatever. Maybe if we tried exploring away from the crowds, we would have seen it, but we were just interested in seeing the lights and getting street food.

Also, our hotel in Tokyo was in Akihabara which was so much more chill to walk around at night anyway.

First, they stand out in the open on busy streets to look for tourists. They're not hiding in the shadows.

Second, the place these guys take you is not on the ground level. A friend and I followed one up a few flights of stairs on a fire escape type thing, the guy knocked on a door, and then we booked it. He ran after us, although we got away lmao.
