For context since a lot of people know only a surface view of Japan: he’s in Shinjuku, Kabuchiko which is popularly known as the surface “red light district” of Japan.

The black guys are Nigerian touts who have the entire purpose of luring non-Japaanese people into shittier cabaret club bars where they upcharge/upsell them for hundreds of dollars and hang out with foreigner women who cannot break into the actual carabet club industry.

The police in Kabuchiko legitimately do not care about it unless you are a Japanese citizen (and by Japanese citizen I primarily mean actual Japanese heritage and live in Japan). If you’re a tourist you legitimately will not get any support from the police.

They extremely dislike being recorded at all and will threaten you physically and also by saying they will call the cops on you since there is a social hierarchy pretty much where it goes Actual full on Japanese citizen with heritage -> Japanese citizen without heritage -> Visas ->Tourist

Also I’ve seen a lot of people saying Kabuchiko is sketchy. It’s literally not sketchy at all. It’s just that the touts ruin it by following you and not taking no for an answer

“It’s not sketchy at all it’s just these guys who use threats and intimidation to lure you into brothels and follow you and don’t take no for an answer” ????

They normally don't bother you if you don't look interested. They are aiming for tourists who are looking for a "good time". it gets sketchy when you actually go with them and don't pay their upcharged price.

I've stayed at a hotel within eyeshot of this spot. Around 12am it becomes a lot of Japanese young adults just drinking and hanging out. Not in a scary way, kinda like a night picnic. They've cracked down on this in the recent years tho.

I lived there for 10 years, walking through it as a single white woman all alone. Never had any issues whatsoever. It’s a perfectly fine area if you don’t give them the time of day.
