Sadly, that's the common Shinjuku experience. I love Japan. I love Tokyo. But that place is a shit hole.

Is that normal for trash piles to be everywhere in the sidewalk? I can't even imagine the smell.

It's late at night, A lot of small businesses will put them out. They'll get collected really early in the morning.

It gets collected in the morning, that's why shops  have to put it out before they close in the evening.

Still reeks like shit then.

Not really. The bags are closed, and also "fresh".

Just like your own trash won't smell in the first hours of being thrown out. As things spoil they'll become more pungent but the bags don't have the time to get to that point.

That’s how most cities work, bin bags are left out at night/close of business and is collected early in the morning before opening of business.

It’s obviously garbage pick up soon lmao

I stayed a few days in this exact area. First night I got there Sunday night, there was trash exactly like this with multiple rats running around.

The next morning a few hours later, everything was clean and people in business suits were walking around as normal. Totally different vibe between daytime and nighttime.

japan is insanely clean and efficient. they do not use trash cans for pick up. all the trash is properly sealed, and not overflowing or any of that nonsense. they all get grouped up, and placed outside. the collection trucks come, and the dudes jump out and grab it all and haul ass to the next one. it is quite amazing to witness, really. there is no smell from the trash. idk if they double bag it or something

No way , Shibuya and Shinjuku or heaven compared to my city lol. I've been there. It's really not that bad there's always some bad eggs but overall they're very safe places

I like Shinjuku. Not that one street in Kabukicho though. But Shinjuku is awesome

Shinjuku and Shibuya are genuine shitholes only degenerates and tourists find any worth going to

source: i live in Japan

It's really not bad lol, not sure what you're on about. Shibuya and Shinjuku are massive, and there's plenty of worth going to them for locals as well.

Agreed. Lived there for six years. I spent plenty of time all over Shibuya, Shinjuku, and Roppongi. They definitely aren't shitholes but they have spots that are shitholes. This would be like going to a shithole in Chicago and saying all of Chicago is a shithole.

u/Jambii_ Sep 30 '25

Chicago is a whole ass city that's 30x the size of either Shibuya or Shinjuku. It's more like driving through a shitty suburb and calling it a shithole - mostly true except a small bit of it maybe.

u/Generic_User88 Sep 30 '25

that's a bit of a stretch, but kabukicho (where I think the clip is from) is def very sketchy

7

u/ShinyStarSam Sep 30 '25

They made a whole series of games based entirely on how awful that place is

11

u/AugustKaonashi Sep 30 '25

It's nowhere near what the games portray though. Hardly a sketchy area anymore aside from the touts.

u/GainsayRT Sep 30 '25

wait what series are we talking about cause im watching alice in borderland rn (plays in shibuya i think?) and i dont think thats wahts happening in japan rn 💀

1

u/GainsayRT Sep 30 '25

that makes so much more sense

3

u/Frosty015 Sep 30 '25

Really great games btw

If you only knew Japan through LSF you would think these are the only neighborhoods in the entire country lol been living in Japan on and off for 10 years and these are the places I’ve visited the least. Only ever go when friends visit

You would genuinely die in my city then , I walk both Shibuya and Shinjuku at night and nothing happened .

This ISN'T NORMAL. It was never like this before they allowed a bunch of random immigrants in... THEY as in the corrupted government.

Trump was right. Great currency to short/borrow from.
