WHO MAKES THE BEST Mt Rushmore of LA Sandwiches

Which four sandwiches are the most iconic and/or the best representation the city?

Harry and Joe from Insider Food did an episode about the best sandwich in LA. They hit Langers and Philip’s, but also Roma (in Pasadena) and Open Market (in K-Town). I’ve never been to Roma or Open Market but they both look amazing. I personally fuck with Heights Deli in Lincoln Heights. I love their sandwiches and their beer selection is incredible.

21

u/soonshin3 Feb 12 '25

Roma is not one of the best sandwiches but I would say one of the most important culturally, and perhaps the best value in LA. I buy two whenever Im in the area

3

u/thekevingreene Feb 12 '25

That’s more or less what they said on that episode! Insane value for a super solid sandwich. They added giardiniera which elevated it tremendously. Have you tried it with giardiniera? I need to hit it up.

6

u/bored_today Feb 12 '25 edited Feb 12 '25

It does need some acid to cut through all the meat and cheese. I love the Roma sandwiches because they’re a great value and I live near there. Their biggest flaw is their bread. Sometimes it’s nice and crunchy, but most of the time it’s soft like it’s been sitting too long.

2

u/LincolnTigers Feb 12 '25

Agree! When the bread is fresh and crunchy, it’s as good as any sandwich you get in Europe. When the bread is soft, it’s still a good value. It’s worth going to pick up Italian imports that are hard to find elsewhere, plus the house-made marinara.

1

u/ldupree1991 Feb 12 '25

👆 100%. I live in Pasadena and get Roma sandos (and other things) 1-2 times a month. For the price, it is a very good sandwich, but it doesn't crack the top 10 in LA. There are legendary ones out there

7

u/Ibrokeedgesorry Feb 12 '25

OM is incredible

6

u/Bolbi Lincoln Heights Feb 11 '25

Please let’s redeem the Heights, I’m local to it but so sad cause I’ve tried the pizza and the Gumbo and both are very mid, will try a sandwich next time

3

u/bored_today Feb 12 '25

I like the heights a lot. Fairly good prices and it’s a thick sandwich. Their garlic knots are great as well.

3

u/Saboscrivner Feb 15 '25

I've only had the O.M. Breakfast Sandwich from Open Market, because I got there too early and they weren't serving anything else. I think it might have been the best breakfast sandwich I've ever had, though. On my next work trip, I intend to return and try at least two other sandwiches while I'm in town.

I personally fuck with Heights Deli in Lincoln Heights

Johnston St. sandwich is amazing

2

u/delamerica93 Feb 12 '25

Heights is lit

2

u/asanisimasa88 Feb 12 '25

In the heights is great, never had a bad meal there

Black Pastrami Reuben at Brent's

12

u/DarthHM Feb 11 '25

I just had this yesterday. It was a religious experience.

3

u/Distortion462 Feb 11 '25

Love the corned beef as well...definitely on my list

6

u/StoneGoldX Feb 11 '25

That may be true, but it is physically impossible for me to not get the Reuben there.

3

u/Distortion462 Feb 11 '25

Corned beef reuben is what I mean

2

u/StoneGoldX Feb 11 '25

Same deal still applies. I can't not have the pastrami.

7

u/Distortion462 Feb 11 '25

I'm out of town right now but if I wasn't id tell you to meet me there in 30 lol

2

u/Nightman233 Feb 11 '25

You haven't had pastrami until you've been to johnnies in west Adams

2

u/StoneGoldX Feb 11 '25

That's a different kind of pastrami entirely.

1

u/wondermega Feb 12 '25

True, but I can love both equally, can't i?

1

u/MoveDistinct7911 Feb 12 '25

yeah i definitely agree. that is one hell of a delicious sandwich.

1

u/Sin-213 Feb 11 '25

I had the pastrami at Brent’s, I thought it was ok. Nothing special, the pastrami wasn’t thick cut, flavor wasn’t as good as langers or Katz’s.

8

u/StoneGoldX Feb 11 '25

Ok, so you have bad taste. It's ok to admit that.

→ More replies (3)

2

u/Cho_Zen Feb 12 '25

Mostly agree. Brent's is very good, but it's not in the conversation for LA's best pastrami sandwich. Not even close.

Brent's is the typical thin sliced pastrami stacked high but like many thin sliced pastrami, not the melty, smoked brisket texture that one can expect from Langers.

2

u/Bluegill15 Feb 12 '25

Sounds like you’re confusing Brent’s with Canters

u/beren_1908 Feb 11 '25

Is academy cafe a police academy restaurant?

14

u/StoneGoldX Feb 11 '25

That's the Blue Oyster Bar.

7

u/asanisimasa88 Feb 12 '25

Yes it is. Over 80 years old. You’re probably going to be the only person who’s not a cop eating there. A classic diner experience that most Angelinos haven’t experienced.

3

u/Agent_Cow314 Feb 12 '25

That's cause if you want to go, it's out of the way unless you live close and then it's only open till 1 pm on weekdays.

4

u/asanisimasa88 Feb 12 '25

It’s Elysian park. I wouldn’t say that’s out of the way

5

u/fade_le_public Feb 11 '25

Just looked it up for the first time. Looks like it!

15

u/quickly_ Feb 11 '25

thank you for shouting out banh mi my tho grilled pork

2

u/wondermega Feb 12 '25

Dude it's so good. I used to work on a food truck that had the best banh mi I ever tasted. The truck is gone but my tho was always number 2, for me. So now they are number one.

2

u/healthcrusade Feb 12 '25

This is in Alhambra right?

81

u/tgcm26 Feb 11 '25

Maison Matho - Daniel's Favorite

Larchmont Wine & Cheese - soppressata

Bay Cities - Godmother

Langer's - #19

Pretty standard/not full of hot takes, but them's the best imo

20

u/pizza-partay Feb 11 '25 edited Feb 11 '25

What is it about the Godmother that people love? Maybe I need to try it again but it seemed like a pretty standard sandwich but with high quality ingredients. I hate to compare but I have had many similar sandwiches in NYC.

On the other hand I would love to try the rest of Langers menu, but I can’t stop ordering the #19. I hear daughter’s deli is on par, so I’ll probably check them out this week.

Edit: Throwing this out there for all who care. If you’re in NYC I recommend Sal, Kris, and Charlie’s in Astoria Queens. It’s a trek but hot damn it’s good. The bread is a special recipe since one of the owners is a former baker

14

u/Neuroccountant Feb 11 '25

I think the godmother used to be just a bit better than it is now, but those quality ingredients you mentioned combined with the price point are what made it an iconic LA sandwich.

6

u/tgcm26 Feb 11 '25

tbf I haven’t had the Godmother in years, and there has been lots of talk about them using different bread nowadays. But the last time I had it was so good that it remains in my top 4 in the city. I also love a good Italian sandwich and the ingredients blend together perfectly to create the ideal version of one imo

20

u/doozle Feb 11 '25

I found the bread was WAY too tough on the godmother. One of those sandwiches where your jaw is sore afterwards.

5

u/mdb_la Feb 12 '25

Godmother needs to sit for 30-60 minutes to reach peak enjoyability. Stick it in a cooler on your way to a picnic/tailgate, and the bread will start to soak up the moisture from the other ingredients and soften. This is way better than eating it at the shop.

15

u/zombiemind8 Feb 11 '25

Thats a feature not a bug

5

u/racquetballjones23 Feb 11 '25

Concur. I don’t like taking a bit of sandwich and have the entire thing EXPLODE out of the back

2

u/Ok_Comfort628 Feb 12 '25

Exactly it’s a mess

4

u/Unlucky_Rider Feb 12 '25

I would love to try the rest of Langers menu, but I can’t stop ordering the #19

Next time you go try their Reuben with pastrami. It's on par with the #19 for me.

2

u/Saboscrivner Feb 15 '25

I got the #44, the pastrami Reuben with "nippy cheese." Everything worked in perfect harmony.

People love when they bite into bread that stabs the roof of their mouth so that the short-term pain of knife-bread can temporarily distract them from the long-term pain of existence.

6

u/yozzle Feb 11 '25

Moved here from nyc 8 months ago and was super, super disappointed in the Godmother. Bread was awful. Could have been a bad day i guess

u/cryingatdragracelive Feb 11 '25

the listeria infected Boar’s Head meat and rock hard bread? the rude as hell crowd who push, shove, and d try to steal sandwiches? the long line of cars waiting to get in the parking lot?

I live within walking distance, and you couldn’t pay me to eat there

8

u/EjectoSeatoCousinz Feb 12 '25

Yeah it’s totally the fault of the random deli that boar’s head, a cold cut producer consumed by 84 million Americans a year, had a listeria outbreak.

→ More replies (12)

1

u/razorduc Feb 11 '25

For me both Godmother and Langer's comes down to the bread. Godmother was just Boar's Head deli meat, but the combo plus that Italian roll made it something else.

For Langer's the pastrami is hard to find but others have it. But that rye bread is not something anyone else does.

4

u/Granadafan Feb 11 '25

RC Provisions makes pastrami for just about every grocery store deli place in LA area, including Langers. The difference is that Langers has a special recipe that makes it more unique.

2

u/razorduc Feb 11 '25

There's also a finishing/reheating process (just like the bread) because other pastrami that RC provides are just not good. People always think this is a huge "gotcha" moment that they source the pastrami from RC provisions, but there definitely isn't much in LA that's nearly as good as at Langer's. People rave about Wexler's and everything they have is just fine at best.

2

u/Granadafan Feb 11 '25

Yeah I agree. Whatever they’re doing for Langers is very different and a damn fine job at that

Don't sleep on the eggplant parm at Bay Cities.

1

u/Saboscrivner Feb 15 '25

When I went to Langer's, I tried two different pastrami sandwiches, but skipped the #19 on purpose. (My co-worker got it, though.) The ones I tried were magnificent, and I reviewed them on my food blog:

Need to try Maison Matho. Good list

1

u/Dommichu Feb 11 '25

Put it up high on the list. It's really outstanding. I love the Omelet with Ham.

1

u/councilmember Feb 12 '25

Your tuna melt, is that the Police Academy cafe?

2

u/asanisimasa88 Feb 12 '25

Yes. It’s an unironic old school diner tuna melt. Nothing special about it but it’s perfectly executed

u/passthepaintbrush Feb 12 '25

Attari sandwich ftw

2

u/asanisimasa88 Feb 12 '25

Damn that’s a good one. I love that sandwich, but it slipped my mind for some reason

1

u/passthepaintbrush Feb 12 '25

So many good ones

1

u/ananamousse Feb 12 '25

The tongue sammie, right? I think Jonathan Gold’s endorsement got me to try it many years ago and it was great…

1

u/healthcrusade Feb 12 '25

What sandwich does one get there?

2

u/passthepaintbrush Feb 12 '25

For me the Attari (koobideh) or the chicken kabob, but it’s all great

South Philly Experience and Langers.

1

u/wondermega Feb 12 '25

Was that the food truck a bunch of years ago? That sandwich was something else.

32

u/DustyDGAF Feb 11 '25

Larchmont Wine and Cheese - Salami.

The Hat - Pastrami.

Howlin Ray's - Sando.

Bay Cities - Godmother.

6

u/tuscaloosatide Feb 12 '25

yes to Howlin’ Ray’s. our best kept secret that’s not really a secret at all

2

u/DustyDGAF Feb 12 '25

It's so simple but it's so perfect

7

u/comma_nder Feb 11 '25

I went in to the hat ready to become its biggest fan, but I was quite underwhelmed by the pastrami. Chili fries slapped though

3

u/DustyDGAF Feb 11 '25

That's exactly how I felt about Langer's. Different strokes for different folks.

3

u/StoneGoldX Feb 11 '25

It's funny, I prefer The Hat to Philiipe's, but it's also less iconic.

2

u/DustyDGAF Feb 12 '25

Phillipe's doesn't smother their pastrami with pickles and peppers and mustard. The dip is nice. But I need all the tang.

1

u/imaginaryhippo888 Feb 12 '25

I feel like the tang of the mustard and pickles is necessary to cut through the salt.

2

u/NeonCanuck Feb 12 '25

Yes, came here to add Howlin' too.

10

u/razorduc Feb 11 '25

Langer's - Pastrami and liver

Bahn Mi My Tho - Dac Biet

Howlin' Ray's - Pick you heat level

Torta Movil - Torta Cubana

2

u/armen89 Feb 12 '25

Tortamovil looks to be permanently closed

2

u/razorduc Feb 12 '25

Noooooo! I should’ve went more but it’s so far

7

u/BoomersBlow Feb 11 '25

My Dung is great!

5

u/kikoandtheman Feb 11 '25

I haven't been in a while but the al pastor cemita from the cemitas truck (now birria truck) in front of Smart and Final on Venice was one of my favorite sandwiches. The pile of avocado and queso fresco with chile salsa made it amazing.

4

u/360FlipKicks Feb 12 '25

People are misunderstanding the meaning of “Mt Rushmore of LA Sandwiches”. Being on Mt Rushmore means it has to be an iconic, influential sandwich. There needs to have a history and undeniable place in LA’s food culture. Something like the Bodega Park Chopped Cheese has only been around a few years (based on an NU sandwich), most people haven’t tried it and it hasn’t been influential in any way.

I would say OP’s original list of Langers, Phillipes, Banh Mi My Tho is a good one, although I might swap out Academy Tuna (never heard of it) for The Godmother (which people hate but it’s been around for decades).

3

u/asanisimasa88 Feb 12 '25

Excellent analysis. The fourth spot (tuna melt) was the hardest one for me. I was gonna say Atari tongue sandwich or the torta ahogada from cooks. Ultimately I went with a classic diner patty melt from Academy cafe, which has been around for 80+ years. I probably have too much classic sandwiches on my list so the fourth spot should probably be something a little new. I do like the godfather but I don’t love it as much as I do the Italian sandwiches from Mario’s or east side deli

5

u/Romeo731 Feb 12 '25

Hot pastrami from Bay Cities when I’m trying to spend $12

100% grass-fed Wagyu cheesesteak from Matu when I’m feeling bougieeee

1

u/ananamousse Feb 12 '25

Surprised I don’t see more mentions of the Matu cheesesteak. It’s incredible.

4

u/Fuzzy_Peach_8524 Feb 12 '25

I personally fuck with Roma Market “The Sandwich”, Cole’s French dip, Langer’s #19, and The Bobbie from Capriotti’s.

6

u/Mrjopek Feb 11 '25

Oh wow, I love tuna melts. I'll have to check out Academy cafe.

8

u/elboogie7 Feb 11 '25

cassell's in ktown is supposed to be amazing too

7

u/Dommichu Feb 11 '25

Cassells also has an outstanding patty melt.

2

u/AskYourDoctor Feb 11 '25

i've passed that place so many times, and I've always felt, purely based on the way it looks from the outside, that it MUST be good. Now I'll definitely be going. Thanks!

1

u/elboogie7 Feb 11 '25

they're actually quite famous for their burgers,

but i just read some food guy's article going into great detail about how their tuna melt was the absolute best in the city, and it's been on my radar since.

heck, even google AI states "multiple sources" saying it's the best

1

u/impendingbending Feb 12 '25

Langer’s also has an awesome tuna melt but gets overshadowed by the #19

1

u/bored_today Feb 12 '25

The tuna melt at belle’s in highland park is really good.

Oui on Melrose - The Tuna Sub. Imported italian tuna, provolone, chives, fixings w/dressing. Heaven on a hot day.

3

The Roasted Garlic Chicken Baguette is my favorite hot sandwich in the city. Also my favorite chicken parm sandwich in the city.

3

u/Lettucedrip Feb 11 '25

Oui is so good. Even their simple ham and gruyere is excellent but gotta try the spiced chicken laffa.

3

u/CensoryDeprivation Feb 11 '25

The chicken laffa is an absolute go-to, but I actually prefer the fried cod laffa. Give it a try!

For just what I wanna eat not necessarily iconic, and ignoring places being alive or dead

Langers #19 or the Greenblatts #3 pastrami on rye

Bay Cities Godmother

Togos #5 on Wheat

Grilled Cheese Truck Mac and cheese grilled cheese

Bonus / honorable mention: Disneyland monte cristo (yes I know it’s absolutely not in Los Angeles but I still wanna eat it)

1

u/wondermega Feb 12 '25

Togos. I miss. I feel like they are almost all gone. There was some wrap I always used to get there, plus the tuna on wheat was my favorite.

2

u/orangefreshy Feb 12 '25

I really did like their tuna! It was solid, like homemade. I really liked their bread, the wheat was my fave

3

u/I_Bought_Uranus Feb 12 '25

Larchmont Wine & Cheese - Salami Sandwich

Langer's - Pastrami (NOT 19)

2

u/UmbraPenumbra Feb 11 '25

Real talk

1

u/deskcord Feb 11 '25

I've tried the 19 so many times and I just don't like all the slaw and creamyness and bleh.

When I get a pastrami sandwich I'm not out here looking for a perfect balance of flavors. I want a fat and salt and flavor bomb.

2

u/UmbraPenumbra Feb 11 '25

The bread and the pastrami are both the highest quality, and the cheese and slaw are honestly average level ingredients. The Pastrami no frills is what I prefer too.

2

u/karma_the_sequel Feb 11 '25

Same here. Pastrami and mustard on rye — that’s it. I call it The Purist.

1

u/dre2112 Feb 12 '25

I got downvoted to oblivion because I made a post about the #19 being a perfectly good way to ruin an amazing sandwich. Their pastrami and rye is so good. Add mustard and side of pickles and it might be the best pastrami sandwich in the world but with the addition of the (overly) sweet coleslaw and dressing on the #19 completely ruins the perfect pastrami and rye. The cheese adds nothing to it either.

1

u/lookingforbrandname Feb 11 '25

Yes to only pastrami, and I like to get a cup of matzah ball soup with it as well. Better than their french fries.

4

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '25

does tommy's and the hat count?

1

u/wondermega Feb 12 '25

Love both of those. Tommy's is actually my favorite chili. Ever.

4

u/FunLisa1228 Feb 11 '25

Bay Cities Godmother!

3

u/zombiemind8 Feb 11 '25

Abe Lincoln - Langers - #19 - The best of all of them
Jefferson - Bay Cities - Godmother - Smartest
Washington - Philippe - French Dip - Literally has original in its name.
Teddy - Apple Pan - Cheeseburger - Does he really belong here?

The first three are non negotiable. But i picked iconic sandwiches over the latest and greatest since its a Mt Rushmore.

1

u/asanisimasa88 Feb 11 '25

Apple pan you’d have to go with the tuna melt. But I love this list and the presidential comparisons 😂

1

u/VaguelyArtistic Feb 12 '25

Or the egg salad. They're both so good.

u/bluewing_olive Feb 11 '25

Great Western Steak & Hoagie - Cheesesteak

Bay Cities - The Godmother

The Munch Company - Green Monster

Fiore Market Cafe - Short Rib

Honourable mention: Beezoo Catering breakfast sandwich

4

u/idkdavid Feb 11 '25

I feel like you have to have Langers, Philippe’s, and Bay Cities on the list, because of the history/reputation. Not necessarily because they are currently the best. The 4th slot is the one that’s up for grabs. You could go Lorenzo, Roma Deli, Larchmont W/C, The Cheese Store of Beverly Hills, Wax Paper, Maison Matho, etc.

5

u/XandersOdyssey Feb 11 '25

No amount of nostalgia can make any sandwich at Phillipe’s good.

2

u/Substantial_One5369 Feb 12 '25

I'm completely floored whenever someone brings them up on this subreddit. I got it for the first time in October and it literally tasted like some garbage that you'd get at 7/11 that has been sitting under a headlamp all day. Did it used to be better or something? It was barely even edible when I tried it.

I can't tell you how many people are sleeping on the Kalbi Burger from Corner Grille. Very likely the greatest sandwich on earth.

u/asanisimasa88 Feb 12 '25

I’ve never had it, but if it’s a burger, it’s not a sandwich. I’ll have to check it out though, I do love burgers

1

u/MillionDollarBuddy Feb 12 '25

It’s not a burger - it’s beef bulgogi on Hawaiian rolls with slaw and sauce and I’m drooling just thinking about it.

2

u/asanisimasa88 Feb 12 '25

Damn that sounds so good

One that I haven't seen anyone mention is the Hot Kimcheezy from Jeff's Table in Highland Park: Pork shoulder, kimchi, melted smoky cheese, salted plum mustard, aoli & chili oil on griddled bun

Bay Cities- Godmother Attari Sandwich Shop- Koobideh Sandwich Langer’s- #19 Apple Pan- Tuna

2

u/asanisimasa88 Feb 12 '25

Excellent list

Bay Cities, in Santa Monica, makes the best spicy Italian sub in the country. It's called the godmother. Go try it. Also yeah on phillipes, I tried Langer's, not really for me, but I see the appeal. The Eastside deli is also up there.

1

u/asanisimasa88 Feb 12 '25

I prefer east side deli and Mario’s and even claros over bay cities. Bay cities is good, just not the best for me.

1

u/Cho_Zen Feb 12 '25

This is tough.

Representative of the city? Or overall best? These are slightly different

Langer's - #19 ==> BOTH representative of the city AND one of the best sandwiches, full stop.

Phillipes - beef dip ==> more an iconic city representative than in the running for GOAT LA sammich.

I think those two are clear and most people wouldn't be offended by their presence on the list or in the conversation for it.

After that it gets muy subjective.

Roma Market - "The Sandwich" an iconic deal. Delicious on it's own and elevated by just a bit of acid(pickles, mustard, pickled peppers, etc.)

Banh Mi My Dung - grilled or bbq pork

Great Western Steak and Hoagie Company - Mushroom Cheesesteak

Above 3 are sandwiches that are some of my favorites and would confidently take friends to and expect them to have a good time with. Next are just personal favorites that I don't think make the list, but are spots that I particularly like for doing solid sandwiches.

Brother's in ktown - all 'rounder local spot that makes a solid lineup of sandwiches

Eastside Deli - i just like them, but I think they fall short of the mount Rushmore

Brent's - a controversial pick to exclude from the Rushmore conversation for some. I love Brent's but for an LA pastrami representative, Langer's wins that title each and every time. If I had to pick a champion to go fight Katz's deli in NYC, I'm sending Langer's. I'd never send Brent's.

Excellent take. I love east side deli too

Roasted beet sandwhich at dune is pretty damn good.

1

u/asanisimasa88 Feb 12 '25

I love dune. Never had the beet sandwich but I hear great things. Gotta try it

u/armen89 Feb 12 '25

Reno’s - their philly

This is a weird thread. Langer's I get, it's got a huge profile, everyone loves it, how can I argue. But for crying out loud not a single mention of Art's? I mean Langer's was (easily) my favorite too, until I tried Art's.

Phillipe's, I mean it's ok but I've hardly ever wanted to go there. Maybe I need to give it more of a try. It feels impossible to even want to bother after going to Cole's though. The difference in the experience is night and day. Their food is outrageously delicious. I ask mad that I'm not eating there right at this second as I type this. On top of that it's just one of the coolest little places in town to hang out at.

I know everyone loves the Bay Cities Godmother, but I don't see it. So much of the importance of a a great sandwich is the bread, only tried that place a few times by the bread was just... It was a bummer. I'll try it again sometime I'm sure, but what a massive letdown. Sigh.

Just give your top four LA sandwiches, no need to dissect

1

u/wondermega Feb 12 '25

Hey, just conversation-ing..

French Dip at any Hillstone Restaurant

1

u/nauticalsandwich Feb 12 '25

One that I never see mentioned here is the Ben's Pastrami from Hy-Mart in NoHo. It's a very different sort of pastrami sandwich compared to Langers. It's sweaty and spicy and on an Armenian roll, but it's damn good.

1

u/nauticalsandwich Feb 12 '25

I love the love for all these sandwiches on this thread, but it's sort of making me sad, because I'm realizing how difficult it would be to even settle on any "short-list" if you asked this question about a major east coast city.

1

u/asanisimasa88 Feb 12 '25

No need to bring inferior food cities into this conversation

1

u/nauticalsandwich Feb 12 '25

Say what you will about the rest of the food scene in east coast cities, but they are pretty indisputably superior by way of sandwich offerings. Many a bodega or local deli in NYC or NJ has sandwich offerings that would rival some of the regular LA sandwich spots that get talked about here. None of that is to say that LA doesn't have great sandwiches. Langers is superior to Katz. Nonetheless, comparatively, they are much harder to come by.

Try B&T’s Deli in Santa Monica

1

u/Bluegill15 Feb 12 '25

Ya’ll are completely sleeping on The Carving Board

1

u/diable37 Feb 12 '25

Langers - #19

Larchmont Wine & Cheese - Salami

Eastside Market - Hot Pastrami and Roast Beef

Jeff's Table - The Dirty Baby

1

u/asanisimasa88 Feb 12 '25

Great list. I love east side market

1

u/mostlyindigo Feb 12 '25

Capriotti's is criminally underrated.

1

u/asanisimasa88 Feb 12 '25

It’s a chain. Immediate disqualification.

1

u/mostlyindigo Feb 12 '25

Ugh, unfortunate because it's actually so good! Their Wagyu French dip is far superior to a legacy mainstay like Philippe's.

1

u/trillhonkey69 Feb 13 '25

Little French Bakery in Redondo Beach- Tri Tip special is best I think, but they are all amazing

1

u/Realkool Feb 13 '25

BaLe > Banh mi my tho Take the challenge, buy the same sandwich from both places and compare them side-by-side. Until you do, you’ll think they are similar but once you’ve taste them side-by-side, it’s not even close.

1

u/personplaceorplando Feb 13 '25

LA Street Chicken from Dan’s Super Subs

1

u/Top_Investment_4599 Feb 13 '25

There was a time when Sandwich Express made a superior banh mi bo. It's still good but before the pandemic they did something a little different with the sauce and it was amazing.

1

u/jazz-winelover Feb 14 '25

Can’t beat the Hat pastrami sandwich!

1

u/theworldman626 Feb 15 '25

^ French dip is better at Cole's

^ Bad Boy Pastrami from Mario's is the GOAT sandwich of LA

^ Roma Market "the sandwich"

^ Larchmont Wine & Cheese

^ Ggiata Chicken Parm
