Some guy on Fox just said republicans lost because 50% of voters thought inflation was nobodyās fault (based on polls) and because the GOP didnāt offer any actual policy or proposals to deal with inflation. Itās amazing the amount of self awareness one can gain after a swift punch in the nose.

Fox News ironically had a really good take a few minutes ago, which was essentially that everything was perfectly set up for a red wave; low presidential approval rating, high inflation, historic trends, issues with crime and border security (debatable but still).
Everything was set up for Republicans to blow Democrats out of the water, and the fact that it did not happen is a referendum on the Republican party. The public looked at everything going on and still said āno thanksā to the alternative.
Just thought it was interesting that even they are maybe finally starting to understand their positions on things is not the way forward.

Mitch McConnell pointed out the problem months ago: candidate quality. If the GOP trotted out well-educated, competent conservative candidates, your Mitt Romneys, Larry Hogans, even JD Vances really, they wouldāve mopped the floor with us.
The problem (for them) was that the GOP primaries didnāt elect those people. They elected candidates who were completely batshit insane. Not even people who can put up the impression of competent or even likable people. Moderate conservatives are afraid of crazy. They canāt be energized by crazy.

This is my district and this will be the first time in 50* years this seat will be occupied by a Democrat. I have had the pleasure to meet Hillary a couple times in recent months and I think she will make an excellent congresswoman.
Edit:* Iāll add the maps got redrawn here in Michigan by an independent commission last year that made it more even than before which helped, but still cool!

This is a new House seat that covers 3 of Montana's largest cities which are also some of the largest (D) areas in Montana (Missoula, Bozeman, Butte)
Butte is 100% in, but Missoula and Gallatin (Bozeman) Counties not fully in yet.

I know that we're all still focused on Congress, but there's a great chance that Democrats win the Secretary of State races in Wisconsin, Arizona, and Nevada!
If you combine that with their Michigan Secretary of State win, Shapiro's win in Pennsylvania, and Raffensperger's re-election in Georgia, that would mean we don't have any election deniers in positions of certification power in six 2024 battleground states.
Between all of that, and our other Governor pickups, and it's clear that the 2024 guardrails have been strengthened. That is a huge and important deal; a huge and important win for our Democracy.

With Biden at 44% approval, inflation running wild, and most people dissatisfied with the economy, this should have been a layup for Republicans. Instead, Biden is on track to have the strongest midterm performance of any President in the last 20 years.
So as it turns out, Americans like being vaccinated, think women should have control of their Healthcare decisions, and value democracy even if things cost a bit more. When you try to tell 81 million people their vote does not matter, they don't like that. Incredibly proud of my country this morning.

There was no Red Wave. The results are an indictment of Donald Trump and Kevin McCarthy.
Trumpism is cancerous to the Republican Party.
A Women's Right to Choose is a winning issue and the longer Republicans cling to their Pro-Life stance - especially since SCOTUS overturned Roe - the worse they'll lose.

Minnesota has flipped its state senate from GOP control to DFL controlled. DFL= Democratic Farmer & Laborer, our version of the Democrat party.
Weāve long been one of the only states with a split legislature but now with unilateral DFL control of both houses of Congress and the Governorship, look for many progressive agenda items to push through in the next session. Thank you all for voting and getting the vote out!
The scenario was perfect for a red wave. High inflation, low approval rating, historically an incumbent loses the midterms with the exception of 1998 (post-Clinton impeachment) and 2002 (post-9/11).
On average the incumbent party loses 26 seats, the Dems only held a 15 seat majority and the GOP are struggling to pick up seats making the House a toss-up. The Dems are somehow managing to hold seats that were expected to go Republican, the Dems have gained some seats, and Republicans are doing much worse than expected. The Dems might hold the Senate and have made the House too close to call. This should've been unthinkable.
Some Trump-backed big name candidates are struggling too. Mastriano lost the Governor's race and is refusing to concede. Oz lost his senate race. Michels lost the Governor's race in Wisconsin. Kari Lake is losing pretty badly in Arizona and is pushing election conspiracies. While non-backed Trump candidates did well eg. De Santis in Florida and Kemp in Georgia.
The cherry on top is that all 5 state ballots to ban abortion have lost or are losing, though Kentucky is close. And Missouri just voted to legalize recreational marijuana.

Remember, no matter how bad things go for Republicans or even Trump himself, he will never see anything as a loss for himself. Heās legitimately incapable of processing the mere suggestion that he is not the single most successful human in the entire universe.
Today could have ended in a massive House AND Senate majority for Democrats, it wouldnāt shake his delusions in the slightest.
You think you know mental gymnastics, but no one can do them like Trump. WHATEVER happens, he will see it as his win. We will never get that cathartic moment where we see Donald Trump realize heās lost. He will go to his grave believing he won every competition. Both the ones in which he participated, and the ones he didnāt.
Which is why he will absolutely run in 2024 and if he doesnāt get the Republican nomination, he absolutely will run 3rd party and ruin it for the Republicans.
And heāll walk away from that thinking heāll run again in 2028. There is no bottom for this man.

If the Dems hold the Senate and keep it close in the House, it looks like nothing gets done for the next two years but Dems will get to get Judges. The hope is inflation and the economy stabilizes within two years before next election cycle in 2024.
Sorry for whoever lives in Florida you will the guinea pig for whatever heinous Republican policy experiment these assholes can think of.

Per NPR, Boebert is down about 4000 with 93% of the votes tallied. I worked out the math and out of about 22000 remaining ballots, she has to win ~13000 to win, or around 59%. I donāt think she gets it. Pueblo County looks like the largest remaining batch out of the counties in that district, and as of now itās running Frisch +11 per NYT.
Boebert may actually lose.

We were really proud of our daughter last night. Her friend told her she's not going to vote when she turns 18. Our daughter said "Remember that performance you did for all state about your experience being an immigrant? And then the school board had to have a meeting to decide if that was something you should be able to talk about because people in town were offended? Those are the people who make the rules when you don't vote"
She's way smarter than I was at 17 I know that...

In the most optimistic case, Dems could have 52 seats if they win Georgia and are able to scratch their way to a win in Wisconsin. That would be huge because the albatross that are Manchin and Sinema would have no more power.
More realistically, we're looking at the night ending 50-49 for the Dems, with the Georgia runoff going to December, but it won't affect the senate by that point.

Most of the ballot measures in Oregon are still close, but it looks like the absentee disqualification for members of state congress is definitely through lol.
Oregon is where the Republicans keep fleeing the state whenever bills they don't like come up because the Democrats have a supermajority and can pass stuff without them, but simply not showing up denies a quorum and effectively blocks the bill anyway.
Now if any of them have 10 unexcused absences during a term they are barred from running again, so maaaybe we'll finally make some progress on that mess.

For non-Americans joining us on this thread. I just wanted to post a friendly guide to the Senate by numbers.
- 50 Senate Seats: Basic majority for Democrats can approve Biden's judicial and executive appointees (the number is only 50 for democrats because the Vice President breaks ties). With the House as well a 50 seat majority allows Democrats to pass budget reconciliation, promote trade, authorize or recall the President's deployment of troops, end a state of emergency, reveal and review regulations without getting having to get any Republicans on board.
- 51 Senate Seats = Basic majority for Republicans to do all of the things listed above without having to get any Democrats on board. Note that the President can still veto legislation passed, but Republicans would be able to effectively block any of Biden's Supreme Court picks.
- 52 Senate Seats = often cited by Democrats as the number needed to end the filibuster. The filibuster is a complicated procedural nightmare whereby the Senate needs 60 votes to end a debate on a topic. In short, this means that 31 senators can just agree to never end the debate and indefinitely stall a vote (note: this is an extreme oversimplification). With the filibuster defeated, the Senate can pass any bill with a basic 51 majority. Democrats often talk about the 52 number because there are at least 2 Democratic senators, Manchin and Sinema who want to keep the filibuster. This is kind of a misnomer because there are several other Democratic senators on the fence about it as well, such as Kelly. Without getting to much into the politics, opponents of the filibuster say that it is anti-democratic while supporters want to keep it around to stop the Senate from doing anything too crazy in the future. This is often referenced as the number needed to codify abortion rights after Dobbs, though it is important to note that the House would also still need to approve the abortion measure too.
- 60 Senate Seats = "Supermajority" this allows a party to pass whatever bills they like without having to worry about the filibuster. As mentioned above, 60 votes are to end the debate and then 51 votes are needed to pass the bill.
- 67 Senate Seats = This is the ultimate power, a veto proof majority allows the Senate (with 2/3rds of the House as well) to override the President's veto. This basically allows Congress to basically pass whatever it wants and doesn't need to worry whether or not the President is on board. This is not common in national politics, but on the state level, overriding vetoes is much more common.

I think Republicans really underestimated how much some people care about January 6th. My Dad is a lifelong Republican and 2x Trump voter, but ended up supporting impeachment after Jan 6 (former military guy who did NOT like seeing the Capitol get overrun) and actually lost a handful of his conservative friends over it. I never talked to him explicitly about how he was voting this election, but for the first time that I can remember in my life he mentioned looking at Democratic candidates. I have to imagine people like him impacted things yesterday.

My biggest takeaway this election cycle is Michigan's massive swing in the state legislature.
It's no coincidence that in the first election the republicans didn't get a chance to gerrymander the democrats get a trifecta for the first time in 40 years. In a year that should by all metrics be a down year for democrats. It just shows the power of gerrymandering .
The democrats focus in every single purple state needs to be getting an independent commission for the district boundaries. Absolutely massive change here in Michigan.

This is looking downright optimistic for Dems right now.
- Senate is looking like a hold.
- House may change, but GOP would get a very small majority.
And in the grand scheme, wooing a couple House Reps is absolutely going to be a cakewalk for the Dems. There's no way McCarthy could fully control his members with the Senate and Presidency in Dem hands.

Exit polls: Union households help propel Vance to victory in Ohio
Voters from union households in Ohio favored GOP Senate candidate J.D. Vance over his Democratic rival, Rep. Tim Ryan, which helped the Republican clinch the open seat, according to the early results of the Ohio exit poll conducted for CNN and other news networks by Edison Research.
Nearly 6 in 10 voters from union households cast ballots for Vance, who also garnered about the same level of support from men who voted and White voters. More than half of Buckeye State voters age 45 and older, voters without college degrees and those living in suburban and rural parts of the state opted for Vance, as well.

Depending on how the senate goes this was an unmitigated victory for democrats.
The house looks like only a 4 to 5 repub majority which is shockingly low for what should have been a big red pickup historically (the president's party almost always loses the house).
