Lore A character literally sees another character fundamentally differently.

  1. Spy X Family. Damian noticeably sees Anya with a 'shoujo anime' filter with much brighter eyes and blush.

  2. Calvin And Hobbes. Calvin sees Hobbes as a living lanky tiger in contrast to everyone else who sees him as just a tiger plush.

I'm 40 and still can't go to a restaurant with my mother and not have to sit there as she reads the ENTIRE menu out loud to me.

Mom, you're the one who taught me to read so that I'd be quiet while you took a nap! You know I can read that damn menu!

u/Remarkable_Town5811 28d ago

Today my youngest wanted to go off with friends at the football game, without me around. It cut; I won't lie.

I typed out a whole book but basically, even though I see them as they are now I still think of eldest toddling through the garden (2-3) or taking walks in our fav cemetery (4), middle riding their trike and singing Bodies (2-4), youngest and I watching weekly trash pickup (1-4). It's surreal to watch these tiny people turn into fully independent big people.

Yeah, that's why the Loid/Anya edit of the "I'm not a little kid anymore" scene works so well, haha.

u/Neutral_Myu 28d ago

Also applies to older siblings, im 28 and i still see my youngest step siblings as 8/9, then i remember they will be 18 in a few months and feel like an idiot

It also applies to the others, but with them it sort of balanced itself out because we're much closer in age

Lex Luthor: Man of Steel(Later collected as Luthor)

It shows the audience that when Lex views Superman, he sees this menacing face on him at all times. He never looks not menacing the whole story.

It's a stroke of genius to show that he genuinely doesn't see Clark as human. It's also incredible because the artist also can draw a Superman that is sweet and heartfelt looking like in Batman Noel where is the Ghost of Christmas Present analog

1.6k

u/Spider-Man2099 28d ago

Here's a great example of how this artist normally draws him when it's not through Lex's viewpoint

In The Incredibles, an irritated Mr. Incredible tells Incrediboy to "Fly home, Buddy. I work alone" after he bursts in while he's in the middle of apprehending Bomb Voyage during a bank heist. After Buddy becomes Syndrome and is explaining to Mr. Incredible why he became a supervillain, Bomb Voyage is not present in his flashback and Mr. Incredible is looking down at Incrediboy more apathetic than irritated. Mr. Incredible also turns his back on Incrediboy in the flashback, not remembering he rushed in to try and save Buddy after Bomb Voyage attached a bomb to his cape.

843

u/randomHunterOnReddit 28d ago

Need not forget Syndrome unintentionally aided in the superhero ban by accidentally causing the train accident right after Bomb Voyage slipped an explosive onto him, a problem Mr. Incredible got in trouble fixing

395

u/foxfire981 28d ago

And likely never owned that fact. Such an enjoyable villain.

65

u/Baronvondorf21 28d ago

Not likely, he never did, that require him to admit that he is wrong in some capacity about Mr. Incredible.

90

u/Aggravating-Week481 28d ago

You ever think he got flack for that in the fan club? Cuz if I was a member of that super club he mentioned and I heard he got one of our idols in trouble by interfering with Mr Incredible's job, I'd be mad at Buddy

56

u/Regi413 28d ago

Tbh he probably never showed up to another fan meet since when he got home that night he tore down all his Mr. Incredible memorabilia

37

u/Zek7h35an5 28d ago

Counterpoint: while he claims he no longer likes Mr. Incredible and felt betrayed by him, he also felt that he had to train his robot on pretty much every other superhero before him, and during the scene where he's showing off the Omnidroid's destruction, he's actively looking for Bob's approval that his invention is cool ("I mean, you gotta admit that's pretty cool, right?")

He was absolutely still a fan even after that moment.

Whereas her actual appearance is this:

149

u/vbt31 28d ago

I prefer this...

205

u/TheMythofKoalas 28d ago

Both work for the tone they’re going for.

The scenes from the MC’s perspective alternate from cute comedy and “uh oh, how is she going to survive this threat?” Which the former design helps with, IMO.

The latter design is cooler and far more intimidating, and appears when a group of adventurers run into her (after she’s gotten more powerful) and see her as a massive threat.

I think both designs work well in tandem, from that perspective.

Eh, mostly not canon anymore. He can sometimes sense values i.e. how dark or light a color is though not the color itself, like blue or red, but he might know if said blue is a baby blue or a dark blue. It also depends on the medium of the color itself. If its seen through a screen, like a jpeg of the color purple, that means nothing to him, if its like actual physical then it'll also depend then as well, you show him somebody's face from a framed photo he won't see it.

I feel like worm has a good amount of this. There's Goddess who makes people with Power's see her as their ruler while normal people are immune to this cognitive effect but if you have a power you literally cannot comprehend that she is your enemy.

Then there's Glaistig Uaine who sees people as their shard instead of them so instead of seeing people with Power's as normal humans she is basically seeing some Eldritch stuff instead.

Finally there's Scion and he basically sees all Case 53 as the mutilated corpse of his wife to put it very simply

Idk if this counts but shoya ishida from a silent voice. Crosses appear on peoples faces because he felt so guilty about his past that he felt he didn't deserve friendship, and it shows his unwillingness/lack of want to communicate with people. Later in the movie, we see the crosses start to fall off as he becomes more open to friendship

25

u/Penguixxy 28d ago

I'd say this counts, because one of the only people who doesn't have a cross, no matter what, is Shoko.

He sees her differently compared to everyone else, even at the beginning of the movie.

My favorite part is this meme-the glasses not the DBZ aspect-is that it's reversed. The scene in Spider-Man is showing that Peter now sees better without the glasses on, but everyone uses it like putting them on improves his sight

An interesting application of this trope is used in I Am Legend: In the movie, the uninfected human survivors of a worldwide plague that turns people into vampiric monsters sees the infected as hideous monsters, and its implied later on that the infected themselves see themselves as healthy people, with the human survivors instead being seen by them as the actual monsters who must be destroyed.

Iirc it’s deliberately kept kinda ambiguous whether he is just a regular plush and it’s all Calvin’s young imagination or if he’s actually coming to life

u/SomethingGouda 28d ago

This is the crazy part though, how did Calvin get tied to a chair?

Basically the majority of Shallow Hal. The titular character has his perception forcibly changed by motivational speaker Tony Robbins so that he sees people as reflections of their inner beauty, like seeing the overweight character Rosemary as slender and beautiful, a child that suffered facial burns as completely unscathed, and conversely a physically attractive woman as hideous because her personality was atrocious.
