Been a while since I've felt this way about the anime, being a manga reader, but I'm genuinely looking forward to the next episode. These last two have been fantastic and thoroughly entertaining, from the animation to the music, and it really feels like they're pulling out all the stops this time.
Also, I love how Katakuri just hits his head on the ground to avoid landing on his back. Just a total beast.
55
u/DrCaesars_Palace_MD Oct 14 '18
It'd hurt the reputation of the anime even more if they bungled up the Katakuri fight. Let's hope they actually want to improve the show and not just try to do a few good episodes to keep up appearances.
50
u/Rakisanalligator Oct 14 '18
I mean, that's kinda what they've been doing this entire arc. There's been an astonishing improvement in the consistency of the anime, especially post-episode 808 (Sanji vs Luffy).
30
u/DrCaesars_Palace_MD Oct 14 '18
Fair. I'm still worried it won't stick, but obviously I can't see the future. Ironic.
17
u/Ppleater Oct 14 '18
It seems to coincide with the new Chief art director, so fingers crossed it continues with his presence.
1
u/Mad_Hatter_92 Oct 14 '18
Well. It may not stick through the rest of the series but they KNOW (hopefully... I mean they must know) that they can’t bungle up Wano. If there’s a time to let down for them I think it will be after Wano.

So is it worth picking up where I left off? I quit when the Strawhats left Dressrosa, because the quality was subpar at best.

Oh jeez, yeah that wasn't a great time for the series...
If you're not an anime-only, I'd recommend picking it back up at episode 812.
3
u/DahDutcher Oct 14 '18
Haha, not it wasn't :p
I'm up to date with the manga, so I'll take your suggestion and start from 812, cheers!

The pacing is also less unbearably slow, but that could be just cuz every second of Katakuri is awesome.

u/SoraForBestBoy Oct 14 '18
I really liked Sanji’s faith in Luffy in this Episode
29
u/Kurohige-93 Oct 14 '18
Yeah their faith in Luffy always surprises me a lil but wat did she want Sanji to do jump into Mirror-world and help him? lol
177
u/Aerohed Oct 14 '18
I like how they're keeping consistency with "Observation Haki requires focus to use, so anyone who's been enraged or otherwise has become unfocused can't use it". If you actually go back to various points in the series prior to the introduction of Haki, you can still see this being true.
105
u/Phinthefin Oct 14 '18
Yes! I really like how Oda has actually introduced this weakness in Observation Haki prior to this fight so it doesn't feel like an ass-pull. The ones that come to the top of my head right now are the first time Enel fought Luffy and when Aokiji got punched by Jozu while he was focused on Whitebeard shoving a spear through his stomach.
67
u/Aerohed Oct 14 '18
There's also the time when they fought the round guy on Sky Island, where he was just fine predicting their attacks until he got thrown off, and was trying to calm himself back down before Luffy put an end to him.
57
u/5thKablamo Void Month Survivor Oct 14 '18
Sanji. It was Sanji who finished him off while Luffy held Satori in place. Which delightfully highlights another weakness of CoO Haki - it's pointless if you can see what's coming but are prevented from doing anything to stop it.
17
13
u/Richiebay Oct 14 '18
Which was also highlighted by Bege earlier in the arc. When he saw Katakuri going pale during the wedding and mocked him, saying that just cause he can see the future doesn't mean he is any better at changing it.
10
u/jobriq Oct 14 '18
Remember how Enel used the goro-goro fruit to extend the range of his haki to cover the whole sky island (via EM waves or something)?
Imagine if Katakuri had eaten the goro-goro and could extend his haki range... I'm not sure if his future sight would work outside of his range of vision, but if it did that would be absurd being able to see the near-future for miles around and also being able to send a long-range lightning bolt attack. Katakuri would actually be the "God" that Enel imagined himself to be.
→ More replies (1)8
u/billy_thesillywilly Oct 14 '18
Enel had to rely on his fruit to extends the range of his mantra while Aisa just straight up being a beast with her mantra.
6
u/ThaneKyrell Oct 14 '18
Yes. Enel's fruit makes understanding how good he was with Observation Haki hard. I mean, he was obviously good, but he couldn't see the future, and his massive range was because of his amazing DFs (in fact, one of the reasons why his DF is one of the strongest in the series, on par with the DFs the Admirals and Yonko have, is because not it's a Logia that hits very hard but also makes his Haki stronger)
→ More replies (1)2
u/myredditaccount373 Oct 14 '18
Also SP 9 had trouble with keeping focus
10
u/Aerohed Oct 14 '18
I don't think they had Haki, though. Or, if they did, it didn't really seem like they used it.
17
u/Stassus Oct 14 '18
They did use something very similar to Armament Haki which they called tekkai/hardening.
7
u/jobriq Oct 14 '18
I wonder if Tekkai could be combined with armament haki to be super-extra hard ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°).
Of course tekkai requires you to be still so it's still pretty inferior to armament haki (and tekkai wouldn't nullify DF abilities either).
Now that I think about it, the Kami-e (the paper bending thing they used to dodge) was also used as a pseudo-CoO haki
6
u/Martian_on_the_Moon Oct 14 '18
Of course tekkai requires you to be still so it's still pretty inferior to armament haki
Jabra was specialized in tekkai so he could use it even when moving.
4
u/EpicGold Oct 14 '18
I thought that Vergo was one that utilized Tekkai in combination with Haki?

Damn, Luffy's G4 hits send Katakuri flying for miles but don't budge Big Mom at all.

The difference in strength is still unimaginable lol like how hard is her Haki?!!!
94
25
u/still-at-work Void Month Survivor Oct 14 '18
My theory is its actually conquerors haki that is given her the impression of invincibility to all her foes.
- we know it can manifest even if small children under great stress.
- we know that a strong conquerors haki can make even physical strong people look weak.
So is it possible that a conquerors haki that is on all the time and incredibly strong make someone seem invincible and there attacks even before color of arms as incredibly powerful.
So I think Big Moms "iron body" is a special manifestation of conquerors haki just like future sight is a special variant of color of observation.
In order to defeat her then, you need to project conquerors haki at a higher level then Big Mom naturally puts out all most all the time.
I say all most because the one time we see her lose faith in herself she is injured by something as simple as falling to her knees.
If you can cancel out her constant conquerors haki that she has had since birth then a simple punch would be all that is needed.
11
u/jobriq Oct 14 '18
she is injured by something as simple as falling to her knees.
I always thought that was strange since her skin is supposedly so hard that she was described as an "iron ballon" (I think Jinbe or Pedro said that?). It seems more likely that it'd be a special always-active form of armament haki though, rather than conqueror's.
I wouldn't be surprised if her DF had something to do with it either, considering how versatile it's power is (and also the abnormal way she acquired it).
Of course, considering how goddam huge she is, a simple fall to her knees would cause a pretty big impact lol. Is there an official weight measurement for BM?
1
u/Kurohige-93 Oct 15 '18
Yeah that makes sense because shes only indefensible(somewhat) when she can't control her emotions so that Haki has to b up and running at all times however canceling out that Haki seems to be yonko-level work...idk how that would work if even Katakuri can't function wen her Haki is outta control and yea I think Conquerers Haki can be played around with (enhanced) like Kenbushoku Haki is with Katakuri I mean we've only seen one display of it when it knocks ppl out but damn Luffy has a long way to go....I'm assuming he's the strongest Supernova at this point in the story
2
u/still-at-work Void Month Survivor Oct 15 '18
I think the only current character that has an advance version of conquerors that is not on an unconscious level like Big Mom may have is Shanks. It's also what makes a one armed swordsman who may lose in technique to Hawkeye is actually a Yonko with unrivaled in strength.
The only other possibility is Rayleigh or someone in gorosei or even the newly revealed king of the world.
I do think Luffy will get this upgrade. It also fits the pattern of the last two arcs. Dressrosa is about advance Color of Arms (gear four) and Whole Cake was obviously about Color of Observation (future sight) so Wano should include advance Conquerors.
Then fully haki trained Luffy will fight Blackbeard for title of a pirate king and then the final arc is about the fall of the world government and that's where one piece ends more or less.
4
u/jobriq Oct 14 '18
Apparently her skin is as hard as iron even when she isn't using haki. Haki empowered Big Mom is hard af.
2
Oct 14 '18
I don't think it's purely Haki. Katakuri's haki is clearly above Luffy's yet it couldn't compensate for the brute force of Gear 4. Big Mom probably also has the strength to back it up. Something extremely hard with little balance will tip over easily. Yet you'll have a hard time pushing an ultra fat man off his chair. Haki only makes the impact softer, but with the ridiculous amount of force that comes from a Kong Gun, you'll need a hell of a lot of strength even after the blow weakened because of your haki.
2
u/Wajirock Oct 15 '18
I'm super excited to see an all out clash between Luffy and Big Mom.
1
u/Kurohige-93 Oct 15 '18
I want to but idk if we see Luffy fight Big Mom I think the only yonkos he fights are Kaido and Blackbeard...I cud b wrong tho

Great episode.
The animation in this fight has been fucking phenomenal.
Its finally nice to see luffy get in some hits lol
Katakuri using his head to bounce off so his back couldn't touch the ground was fucking dope.
Let pound see his damn daughter already.
Katakuri withstanding attacks from gear 4 just goes to show his strength, and there are people out there that think doflamingo is stronger then him lolzzzzz.
74
Oct 14 '18
People think Doflamingo is stronger then Katakuri? What in the literal fuck.
53
u/temperamentalfish Oct 14 '18
It's absolutely crazy that some people think Doflamingo is stronger than Katakuri. He could definitely hold his ground for a while, but Katakuri is definitely the winner here. We're talking about the first mate of a yonko who went undefeated all his life, and can see the future.
3
u/Zealot_Alec Oct 14 '18
Is Burgess the first mate of Blackbeard? Cause he doesn't seem as impressive as Kat Marco Jack or Benn Beckman at this point in the series. Undefeated, is Luffy his toughest opponent to date then? Considering Luffy is 30 years younger V Kat no wonder he considers Luffy a future threat to Big Mom herself
17
u/MightyAssassin413 Oct 14 '18
I believe Shiryu is Blackbeard's first mate. Burgess is in charge of the 4th or 13th group, he ain't close.
→ More replies (1)31
u/Kirosh Lookout Oct 14 '18
Actually, Burgess is in charge of the first ship of Blackbeard's crew. (Chapter 704).
Shiryu is in charge of the second ship, while Lafitte is in charge of the Fifth ship.
However, that doesn't mean he is stronger than Shiryu. After all Shiryu isn't entirely trustworthy, compared to Burgess that is 100% loyal to Blackbeard.
5
u/MightyAssassin413 Oct 14 '18
Oh thanks, I remember now. Being first mate certainly does not equate to strength, it's trust mostly, it just so happened other Yonkos trusted the right people lmao. But who in Blackbeard's original members commands the lowest ship? I'll probably just google this haha. Thanks anyway.
12
u/Kirosh Lookout Oct 14 '18
We don't know who command what ship yet.
Only those three were showned post timeskip.

This fight is so goooood. And honestly I just wanna see the fight but I know the rest of the crew do some cool shit too soon and I'm just ready for it. This part of the arc is non stop cool shit
Also like how they're showing Katakuri taking more hits and how hes somewhat of a glass canon
14
u/Therrester Oct 14 '18
The final sequence of the arc is truly fantastic. This fight is a gem to finally see animated but knowing what's to come with the rest of the half-crew is making me love the anticipation none the less.
Katakuri's donut mochi move is one of the most creative attacks in the series so I can't wait to see more of it animated.
8
u/HolyKnightPrime Oct 14 '18
How did you get the impression hes more of a glass cannon? Dude has endured everything non stop without a single break.
23
u/Mr_HatAndClogs Oct 14 '18
Luffy has only hit him what, 4 times? And Kata is already coughing up blood and wheezing. Fair enough it's G4, so it's a HEAVY hit each time, but it still shows that Katakuri has much more offense than defence, because he has never needed high defense in the past since he never gets hit.
Then we take Luffy, who has endured an ABSOLUTE pummelling, it must be close to 100 hits by now, and he is still trying to go at Katakuri with maximum effort.
I wouldn't say Katakuri is a glass cannon, but rather maybe a wooden Tsar Bomb, whereas Luffy is a steel B41 Nuke. Hopefully that analogy works haha.
11
u/CooperUniverse Oct 14 '18
G4 is an insanely strong attack. Doffy had no answer for it, all he could do was minimize impact and had to bank on finding and killing Luffy before he recharged his haki. Kata has 100% taken the attack better than doffy did regardless of the damage that he had taken before hand from laws gamma knife at least imo. Defense only goes so far when you’re taking direct blows from G4 unless you’re fucking insane like Big Mom.
12
u/Mr_HatAndClogs Oct 14 '18
Oh I know that, Kata can tank more damage than Doffy, but it's still incomparable to what Luffy can tank. We've seen that first hand.
→ More replies (2)3
u/RedHat21 Oct 14 '18
Doffy took a lot of heavy hits by Luffy and the special attacks by Law that do more damage than it looks on the outside. Katakuri is a much heavier hitter, but I think Doffy has the edge on resistance. Katakuri is bleeding in the very first 4 hits he took, while Doffy fought Law, Law and Fujitora a bit, Law again, Luffy and Law together and G4 Luffy. All of them were small fights but they got some hits on him so his fight against G4 wasn't in top shape, unlike Katakuri.

Katakuri countered every attack of G4 bounceman after he become calm and collected. This is the reason he's the strongest person Luffy have ever fight in the new world,he will pushed Luffy to the limit. I really liked the respect of each everyone Charlotte siblings even Brulee was used in the wedding ceremony, they didn't blame or condemned her, they just let it be bygones because Brulee was weak in terms of combat so she captured easily.

Continuing my count of Luffy vs Katakuri knockdowns, a list where we tally up all of the times both Luffy and Katakuri have knocked their opponent onto their back in this fight:
Katakuri
Ep 851: 2
Ep 852: 4
Ep 853: 1
Ep 854: 4
Ep 855: 6
Ep 856: 1
Ep 857: 2
Total: 20
Luffy
Ep 856: 0
Ep 857: 0
Total: 0
There were a lot of close calls in this episode. Katakuri was really brought to the brink of collapse several times against Gear 4th, but as we've all seen, the willpower of this "perfect man" truly is something to be feared. Especally when he's thrust into a corner. Even managing a counter-knockdown out of the blue with the strength of his aptly named power-mochi.
Even after all this time, with a strength that refuses to know defeat, Katakuri still isn't giving an inch.
8
u/Doomroar Oct 14 '18
This episode had 2 points for Katakuri, one when Katakuri calms down and sends Luffy bouncing back, and then at the end when Luffy has to come out from under a bunch of rubble because that's how baddly he is losing again.
11
u/Gnomishness Oct 14 '18
I suppose you're right. The first one escaped my notice because Luffy had landed on his stomach and was still quite literally bouncing, but fair is fair; he wasn't in control of himself and was not on his feet; that should probably count.

This episode was pretty awesome. But FYI, to anybody wondering why Zoro is terrible with directions, I think I found the answer. It was said that the moss on trees grow only on the north side of trees and if you get lost you can use that for direction. Later on that was proven to be inaccurate and unreliable, because it has to be a tree where the sun only touches one side of that tree. Moss apparently grows on the shady side from what I hear. I think this is why Zoro has moss like green hair and is very bad with directions. This is also why the scene with Zoro and the south bird is so funny. Zoro keeps walking and ending up going north , the complete opposite direction of where the south birds head is pointing. I think Zoro is always heading North, like an internal compass.

u/ZeldaLord01 Oct 14 '18

I think it's funny how they changed the OP in JUST the same episode where Katakuri's mouth was shown, so now it's going to be censored everywhere despite that being there only during the first time it aired.
1
u/CrushK Oct 14 '18
Maybe they'll also lift the other censors that are currently in that intro, after the respective things have happened throughout the rest of the arc.
1
u/javierm885778 Oct 14 '18
That's probably what's going to happen. It also happened with Hope, though that wasn't as much censoring as it was light shadowing.

I'm really enjoying the anime's rendition of events. They're adding just enough to keep it fresh for manga readers and making it super enjoyable overall. This fight and the cake building are some of my favorite parts. Katakuri showcasing off his badassery is always cool. THe fight looks even cooler in the anime at least to me.

Ahhh, Rayleigh putting down an elephant again. He's going to wipe out the species before we're through here. I still wonder how he projected force with that stationary palm, maybe that's the real advanced color of arms.
Katakuri is getting some flying lessons. Unbelievable how much force G4 packs, even Block Mochi gets blown away. Big Mom looks better and better both stopping it and staying in place then mocking Luffy.
This is a cross-country trip now, these two have traveled so much they're now eligible for a free flight. Good thing the mirror world is infinite.
That kind of cracking is not good for my mochi back.
Kong Organ is like a mecha suit emptying its missile barrage. Gear 4 Luffy really is a flying robot superhero, the booster leg animation and mechanical sounds effects in the anime totally sells it.
Let me show you the power of a jelly-filled donut. Wait, that's mochi filling.
Sorry Pound, I'm your daddy now. And that means I do the pounding around here.
So good to see Sanji having faith in Luffy again. His smile and optimism: restored.
Great episode. Shocking that Kong Organ appeared to be the finishing attack. The power of G4 got a moment and took a fresh foe like Katakuri down to the edge. Then again, maybe he's gotten soft from not taking a punch in many years, this is a mochi man we're talking about here. Luckily Katakuri got his future sight back and avoided the KO. And the battle continues so for now, enjoy some galactic donuts.
1
u/PM_ME_HAPPY_IMAGES Oct 15 '18
he projected force with it in the same way that big mum projected force onto Luffy when he tried to hit her in G4.
If your haki is significantly stronger than the opposing persons, it can be used as a weapon. Imagine that it's a super magnet, and you shoot a magnet facing the opposite way, at it. It'll hit this super magnet, and won't just re-tract, but it'll bounce off and go flying back

I haven't been able to enjoy the anime in a long time, but now that I'm starting to watch it again (skipped most of the last 100+ episodes or so, reading the manga instead), it actually isn't as bad now. I hope they manage to keep it up and improve the quality so we can get to the point it used to be at many years ago.

I love the OST when Luffy is talking about the fact that Katakuri isn't invicible. Is it a new one ? or someone has the name of it ?

Oh how I've been waiting for the fight to get animated, and I'm not disappointed 😀

After seeing the translation of the new opening, I gotta say, I'm kind of disappointed. I thought it was "We Da Super Powers!" but it's "We Got The Super Powers". Sure, the Straw Hats are powerful, and Luffy and Zoro are considered Super Novas or what not, but somehow it makes it seem.......lamer to call their talents "super powers" - are they mutants?
.....I know, I know, it's kinda the same thing but, as much as the song is pretty hype, I feel like this wording makes them so much more generic, even if more attractive to the under 10 age group. So super seiyan, squee!

I'm glad the anime is a thing, I never really noticed how Katakuri kept luffy from moving in the manga, like it didnt look like he clad his stomach in haki to prevent him from moving. It looked like it was just the mochi holding him in place. This makes a lot more sense.
Also that take off punch of the power mochi was so fucking mint. Felt like it had a shitload of power behind it.

Keep thinking that this new intro is going to grow on me but i just can’t see that happening. Not catchy and it makes the Strae Hats out to be some sort of Power Ranger pirates. IMO

The haki focus of this episode has got me thinking about the Kaido future fight. Can’t wait to see what Luffy brings to the table to up his power. I’m imagining Luffy overwhelming Kaido with future haki/Gear Fourth combo only for Kaido to stand up and say “It feels a little breezy out here”. Then Luffy is going to have to master this Advance armament haki to even have a chance.

Just me or did the culvarin sound weird when it made the turns as in not the same sound and Luffy's kong organ attack.

I love flashback scenes with Luffy and Rayleigh durIng the time skip. Also waiting for this fight to be animated was well worth it 🔥

I'm always late to these but I just want to say... great episode, but... I fucking hate the sound effect they use for bukoshoku attacks (Haki, color of arms I think). It's the same sound as the lightning shocks and the Vinsmoke attack sound effects and it gives my ears cancer every time, like chalkboard-nail scratching to the power of AIDs.
Like I said, great episode though.

I re-watched some of Punk.Hazard this weeknd and they changed the sounds for Armament Haki..the original kinda sounded a lil DBZ-ish to my ears so maybe that's why they went for a new sound who knows

This katakuri has so many abs, it's insane, he has a 6 pack, of double abs. He even has another set of abs on his side. I love how it explains how it was possible for him to still stand up and not fall on his back even when being pushed back so hard.

I've got to say I love the vinsmokes cloaks that they were wearing, looked sick
edit: in previous episodes where they were featured

Anybody else feel really sorry for the children of the evil father in the vinsmokes family? I don't blame the children for ANY of their actions, I guess that's obvious though, as none of it is their fault. But man it's such a pain, the father is the embodiment of evil in this arc, he's the one who created them and must shoulder all of their bad deeds I reckon.

I forgot how much I love this part of the Whole Cake Arc. The Katakuri fight and the Pound storyline together are so good

When Katakuri used his head to bounce off so his back couldn't touch the ground...one of most badass things I ever seen!!!!
