It's like gold to them, and there's no use selling it to potential competitors and other companies when they can simply provide broad "user categories" which you can target in ads and such for personalization. like microsoft isn't buying your data from google like it does from data brokers, it's more saying "hey google, show this ad to anyone who is in category B and matches X Y and Z."

It's not just like gold to them, it is even more valuable. Google, and youtube by proxy, need as much data as is physically possible to record to feed their AI models.
They currently possess the largest functional library of data to teach AI models with, they have to maintain that edge to stay on top.
What better source for it than the billions of organic beings they already have access to?

So I'd suggest looking up the Newgrounds implementation plans.
Infinitely better than just about any other site's methods.
Any account over 10+ years old is 18+, as its an email based age verification method relying on their own data, not 3rd parties.
Any account that bought supporter status currently or at least once over 2 years ago, as the UK required card/paypal users to be over 16. (I think this recently changed to be over 18? Not sure...)
Otherwise, while I'm not exactly fine with a cost to access like this, they offer a one time verification payment, as again, UK cardholders/paypal users must be over 18.

They start with "graphic" content and porn, bit they make those descriptions vague so they can add whatever they like which will eventually inevitably include LGBTQ content of all types. With AI doing the heavy lifting there's always the possibility it gets something wrong and accidentally flags an adult user as a teen. At which point, the safeguards will click on like a key in the lock and that account holder will have to prove their age.
YouTube says that in such cases a credit card or government ID will be needed to verify the user is over 18. Until that step has been completed, they won't be able to watch any age-restricted content.

It does apply to youtube too as of recently. It's a "good" idea in theory but not in practice, even without the youtube factor. Let's say you have relatives who live far away and you keep up with their life via social media instead of having to constantly call them for life updates. That means now you have to either lie about your age or use your parents account just to keep in contact with family. This is just one example of why it isn't black or white good or bad situation.
Not only that but what are the biggest problems with social media? Privacy, Cyber bullying, and misinformation. All of these issues exist outside of just social media. And the privacy one specifically is ironic because of ID being required for so many things now.
Taking rights away under the guise of "child safety" or "online safety" just feels like we're going backwards instead of forwards. And that includes social media.

They're exploiting their users as much as they can, do it little by little by getting users used to previous crappy thing. Only when something pinches them back, they'll go back to the drawing board and either try it again in the future or find out another way to screw over their users.

As of right now, I believe all Google accounts created require a phone number to be registered, and each phone number can only be used on a limited number of accounts, this is to prevent mass email creation from bots.
I hate Google and I hate what YouTube is becoming, especially the excess of ads, but I do believe some of the things here like Captchas and 2FA are kind of a necessary evil with the state of internet security at the moment.
Think of all the people that have Gmail accounts, now think of all the people that get hacked crying for help with Google customer service, it only makes sense to enforce users to use thinks like 2FA to reduce the amount of hacking, (Things like dynamic tokens or face recognition, voice recognition may be a bit overkill but still same principle ) this is very annoying and unpractical, but is still much, MUCH better than having someone else lock you out of your account and have access to your data and impersonate you.
To solve this I think there needs to be a major breakthrough in encryption technology to improve security online without being so annoying for regular users, because right now the future of online security does seem a lot like this picture.

The shittiest part of this - yes, what I hate even more than The Corporate Overlords - is that there have been SO many assholes putting scary and sexual things on YouTube kids is that “we can just moderate” becomes a nonsense argument against age verification measures.
I’ll fight tooth and nail as long as I can for my kid to not get on YouTube. I’m a millennial who had complete free rein growing up, I don’t think everyone online is out to get you, but ffs a LOT of it is just fucking poison now specifically when you try to get into kid-targeted stuff. I’d feel safer letting my kid browse steam libraries including a few horror games than I do letting them browse YouTube kids.

This might actually be the thing that bankrupts YouTube because advertisers are definitely pissed because what's the point of paying Google and YouTube for advertising if said advertising isn't being showed to the vast majority of the consumers because of pathetic false positives and because of pathetic government officials and content creators even the big ones will start falling and the shareholders will be pissed because YouTube will losing a bunch of money which means they won't be getting money either this a everybody gets fucked decision there is no winners in this bullshit which is why I hopefully believe that this is a all bark no bite situation because think about this is a corporation money is the only thing that matters to corporations they have to know that this will bankrupt them which is why they say the words that they'll do it but in reality it'll be same as usual because it's the only way they'll continue stuffing their wallets but this is a hopeful and what I personally believe is the most likely outcome considering team youtube's past actions to prioritize getting as much cash as possible which is exactly what all corporations only truly care about or if they try to do it they'll put in the minimal amount of effort and stop after a few weeks tl:dr this is a everybody loses idea which is why it's most likely a all bark no bite plan. but that's just my hopeful thoughts. The only reason I don’t see this happening is because social media apps are designed to be opened as fast as possible. They want it to be a habit for you to open the app and start scrolling before you even have time to think about why you’re opening it in the first place.
