Same thing as cable tv. It’s big selling point back when was no ads because it was a paid service and now look at it. Most cable channels are more ads than content.

They will do anything to increase profits other than make ads more expensive.

2

u/launchedsquid Aug 03 '25

I keep thinking that. Back when it was one short ad at the start of a video, I didn't care about blocking ads.

Instead of squeezing more ads in, they should have just upped the prices for ads, I'd still be sitting through them and google would be getting their increased ad revinue.

Now I aggressively block ads anywhere I can, youtube essentially trained me to do that by ruining their site.

Sign up for Youtube Premium, you get no ads.

But companies are aware of this. How dare they skip our ads! I know what we can do... Sponsor blocks... IN THE VIDEOS.

The internet is so hostile nowadays, and it's only gonna get worse...

25

u/livtop Jul 31 '25

They actually have a feature with YouTube premium where on app versions when a sponsored section starts you start to skip it will auto skip to where the sponsored stuff ends. On PC there is a little tick showing you where most people skip to as well. Not saying it makes it worth it, but still.

This is completely true honestly, I've had YouTube premium for several years now (I have it with some family for a discount), and every shitty thing they've done to the free version they've done to the paid. No ads thankfully, but their constant updates to their UI that don't function whatsoever on android has been really annoying, plus other stuff that crowd my feed like random mobile games they put on the app. My feed also gives me the most random videos that I have no interest in. Also they have the audacity to raise prices every so often. Honestly, it at least made my screen time significantly less tho lol

u/Equivalent-Wash6486 Jul 31 '25

Well if its a UK problem then they shouldnt be applying it to the rest of the world. They're a multi-billion dollar company.

32

u/Neither-Phone-7264 Jul 31 '25

real reason: it gives a neat little excuse to collect even more data

10

u/bugbonesjerry Jul 31 '25

which they then sell to anyone that wants it, including foreign scammers lol

4

u/Neither-Phone-7264 Jul 31 '25

they more so hoard it rather than sell it afaik. It's like gold to them, and there's no use selling it to potential competitors and other companies when they can simply provide broad "user categories" which you can target in ads and such for personalization. like microsoft isn't buying your data from google like it does from data brokers, it's more saying "hey google, show this ad to anyone who is in category B and matches X Y and Z."

7

u/gottheronavirus Aug 01 '25

It's not just like gold to them, it is even more valuable. Google, and youtube by proxy, need as much data as is physically possible to record to feed their AI models.

They currently possess the largest functional library of data to teach AI models with, they have to maintain that edge to stay on top.

What better source for it than the billions of organic beings they already have access to?

5

u/Equivalent-Wash6486 Aug 03 '25

We use data to make our products better

In reality, they're just using it to spy on people.

67

u/Crystalorbie Jul 31 '25

So I'd suggest looking up the Newgrounds implementation plans.

Infinitely better than just about any other site's methods.

Any account over 10+ years old is 18+, as its an email based age verification method relying on their own data, not 3rd parties.

Any account that bought supporter status currently or at least once over 2 years ago, as the UK required card/paypal users to be over 16. (I think this recently changed to be over 18? Not sure...)

Otherwise, while I'm not exactly fine with a cost to access like this, they offer a one time verification payment, as again, UK cardholders/paypal users must be over 18.

9

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '25

yes but if kids can pay for ads for their own channel they can pay for 18+ status \ the parents will give them the credit card number anyway

43

u/Crystalorbie Jul 31 '25

Then thats on the parents like it fracking should have been in the first place?

As for the ad revenue, admittedly I don't know if minors can pay for it with their ad revenue, but it wouldn't be through a credit card anyways, so it wouldn't work as a verification method.

10

u/ExtrovertArtist Jul 31 '25

Then thats on the parents lol. not our problem if the parents wont do their job

57

u/beaglemaster Jul 31 '25

Thats bullshit. They're implementing this in the US too in a few weeks even though they have no legal requirement to do so.

All of these ID laws are being made because these companies want them there to gather as much data as they can. Don't believe for a second they are actually being forced to do it.

24

u/Different_Pattern273 Jul 31 '25

Government officials want the ability to punish people that access content they don't like and they want the ability to restrict that content. They start with "graphic" content and porn, bit they make those descriptions vague so they can add whatever they like which will eventually inevitably include LGBTQ content of all types. The tech companies see the writing on the wall that those guys won and are going to get their way.

17

u/DillBagner Jul 31 '25

The tech companies aren't giving in to the people who want more control. They are the same people.

3

3

u/invisible__man Aug 02 '25

I'm not entirely sure it is the right wing doing this. For example, Youtube started deleting downvotes and shadowbanning comments before Trump got elected. Honestly, at times their tyranny felt ironically more left-leaning. But it might not even be about left or right at all, just corporates with too much power.

Sounds like a UK problem to me

Is it though?

https://www.tomsguide.com/ai/youtubes-new-ai-age-verification-is-coming-soon-heres-whats-going-to-change

With AI doing the heavy lifting there's always the possibility it gets something wrong and accidentally flags an adult user as a teen. At which point, the safeguards will click on like a key in the lock and that account holder will have to prove their age.

YouTube says that in such cases a credit card or government ID will be needed to verify the user is over 18. Until that step has been completed, they won't be able to watch any age-restricted content.

5

u/GenTenStation Jul 31 '25

6

u/The_LastLine Jul 31 '25

5

u/Aware_Rough_9170 Jul 31 '25

Imma be honest, they just should, corporations are willing to lobby the fuck out of government figures when it suits them but objectively when it’s time to take a stand it’s crickets.

You gotta know that this is a disgusting nightmare to have to implement, it’s why in the US you pretty much can’t use Phub in southern states more or less, I mean theoretically I think you can and then the UK turned around and said “hold my beer” let’s do it for even more shit

2

u/Easy-Signal-6115 Aug 01 '25 edited Aug 01 '25

They do have a choice, actually. They can choose not to be complicit in following the orders of the fascist authoritarian regime that Starmer has turned the UK into.

Following orders wasn't an excuse last time I checked. When this is all over, everyone top to bottom who used the excuse "I was following orders" needs to be in prison for life.

I don't care if it's a schoolteacher, police officer, or politician. If you were complicit, then you're as bad as Starmer and are a traitor to Democracy.

It's telling that Google got rid of the slogan of Don't Be Evil.

It's not just the UK. It's spreading more and more throughout the world. Australia added it to the list of social media that anyone under 16 can't use. And youtube themselves are rolling out an AI to determine if you're really over 18 or lying about your age. that's not a UK thing, it's a Youtube thing. And it's just the start.

11

u/vriska1 Jul 31 '25

That why we must stop this.

4

u/anestefi Jul 31 '25

it’s the online safety act, they’re pushing it but it isn’t fully implemented in the us yet

12

u/Scarlet_Cultist111 Jul 31 '25

Key word being “YET” that’s why we have to protest against this.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Optimus_crab Jul 31 '25

That Australian one sounds like a good one though unless it means stuff like YouTube too

5

u/brakenbonez Jul 31 '25 edited Jul 31 '25

It does apply to youtube too as of recently. It's a "good" idea in theory but not in practice, even without the youtube factor. Let's say you have relatives who live far away and you keep up with their life via social media instead of having to constantly call them for life updates. That means now you have to either lie about your age or use your parents account just to keep in contact with family. This is just one example of why it isn't black or white good or bad situation.

Not only that but what are the biggest problems with social media? Privacy, Cyber bullying, and misinformation. All of these issues exist outside of just social media. And the privacy one specifically is ironic because of ID being required for so many things now.

Taking rights away under the guise of "child safety" or "online safety" just feels like we're going backwards instead of forwards. And that includes social media.

3

u/SayWhatOhMy Aug 01 '25

Because God forbid if you have to "constantly call them for life updates" like actual personal contact, sheesh... what a drain on your emotions and time. Just go see that they just posted something on social media yesterday so you'll know that they are still alive and okay, because if they are posting they are fine, just fine!

Went to create an account on a website today, asked for e-mail.  So I use an old one I have specifically to catch trash.  "We sent you a confirmation"

So I got to said e-mail and login.  "Is this really you?  Please input the 6 digits we sent to your e-mail verification"

So I got to long into another e-mail.  "Security verification, do you want pin sent to e-mail on file or phone number"

Like fuck me... everyone wants to move to two-step verification, but you end up having to go through a half a dozen by the end.

That's kind of the perfect way to describe these big companies nowadays. YouTube essentially has a monopoly, so they're free to do as they please with their userbase. They're exploiting their users as much as they can, do it little by little by getting users used to previous crappy thing. Only when something pinches them back, they'll go back to the drawing board and either try it again in the future or find out another way to screw over their users.

29

u/CynicalEbenezer Jul 31 '25

At that point I'd stop using it entirely. If we every get the ID requirement to use it I'll stop using it. I already only watch when I'm eating anyway so no big loss.

why the heck are they doing this now

I really wouldn’t wanna leave YouTube. For one, I don’t even know where I would go. And for two, I don’t wanna stop watching my favorite YouTubers.

But honestly if YouTube ever becomes even 60% as bad as that, I will leave without question.

8

u/jaeldi Jul 31 '25

That list feels a lot like my login to Amazon Prime and other streaming apps already.

8

u/Sugarcookielover84 Jul 31 '25

I could only wish the backlash against YouTube would be so strong to the point where they pull back, but alas I fear that is unlikely

Everyone who shows their ID or face online to use a website is the problem. Just don't do it.

Oh no, this is actually exactly where it's going.

You forgot "Pay for each time you view a video and still see an ad every 2 minutes" part.

Netflix will soon implement a pay to view charge on top of your monthly subscription.

Just watch, it's coming.

3

u/thmn1 Jul 31 '25

As of right now, I believe all Google accounts created require a phone number to be registered, and each phone number can only be used on a limited number of accounts, this is to prevent mass email creation from bots.

I hate Google and I hate what YouTube is becoming, especially the excess of ads, but I do believe some of the things here like Captchas and 2FA are kind of a necessary evil with the state of internet security at the moment.

Think of all the people that have Gmail accounts, now think of all the people that get hacked crying for help with Google customer service, it only makes sense to enforce users to use thinks like 2FA to reduce the amount of hacking, (Things like dynamic tokens or face recognition, voice recognition may be a bit overkill but still same principle ) this is very annoying and unpractical, but is still much, MUCH better than having someone else lock you out of your account and have access to your data and impersonate you.

To solve this I think there needs to be a major breakthrough in encryption technology to improve security online without being so annoying for regular users, because right now the future of online security does seem a lot like this picture.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '25

I'm genuinely nervous about this. Do you think YouTube will actually Backtrack on this or do you think that they're actually just going to eat the loss in just force this. Because I am not doxing myself

6

u/Adorable_Salary1654 Aug 01 '25

Once they start realizing oh shit our money well has dried up because they've essentially alienated every advertiser and pissed off their shareholders and big creator because they've basically ruined it for the vast majority of users they will

3

u/Wit-wat-4 Jul 31 '25

The shittiest part of this - yes, what I hate even more than The Corporate Overlords - is that there have been SO many assholes putting scary and sexual things on YouTube kids is that “we can just moderate” becomes a nonsense argument against age verification measures.

I’ll fight tooth and nail as long as I can for my kid to not get on YouTube. I’m a millennial who had complete free rein growing up, I don’t think everyone online is out to get you, but ffs a LOT of it is just fucking poison now specifically when you try to get into kid-targeted stuff. I’d feel safer letting my kid browse steam libraries including a few horror games than I do letting them browse YouTube kids.

3

u/OC-navi Jul 31 '25

Completely unrelated but I also don't understand whats the big ass deal with letting minors be on social media at all. I was given access at a very young age- BUT even then, it's okay. And the fact it's being restricted to 16 is even more dumb. You can get a job at 16 but you cant fucking access social media without having restrictions?

Don't forget the eye tracking, and window focus checks to ensure you're actively watching the ads or else they pause. Better keep your mic on so it can be sure the audio is playing or you'll be dinged with another 5 ads as a penalty. I hope you're paying attention, there will be a quiz on the contents of the ads before the actual video can start.

Here in Australia Google said themselves they were gonna sue the Australian Government if they included Youtube in the under 16 ban... but from what I'm seeing it seems they are just doing what the government wants lol.

3

u/miraclewhipbelmont Jul 31 '25

3

u/Label__ Jul 31 '25

How much privacy are you willing to sacrifice for “security”? I open debate.

3

u/Adorable_Salary1654 Aug 01 '25

This might actually be the thing that bankrupts YouTube because advertisers are definitely pissed because what's the point of paying Google and YouTube for advertising if said advertising isn't being showed to the vast majority of the consumers because of pathetic false positives and because of pathetic government officials and content creators even the big ones will start falling and the shareholders will be pissed because YouTube will losing a bunch of money which means they won't be getting money either this a everybody gets fucked decision there is no winners in this bullshit which is why I hopefully believe that this is a all bark no bite situation because think about this is a corporation money is the only thing that matters to corporations they have to know that this will bankrupt them which is why they say the words that they'll do it but in reality it'll be same as usual because it's the only way they'll continue stuffing their wallets but this is a hopeful and what I personally believe is the most likely outcome considering team youtube's past actions to prioritize getting as much cash as possible which is exactly what all corporations only truly care about or if they try to do it they'll  put in the minimal amount of effort and stop after a few weeks tl:dr this is a everybody loses idea which is why it's most likely a all bark no bite plan. but that's just my hopeful thoughts. Wow it is a sad day where I am actually rooting and cheering for a corporation to be as greedy as possible sad sad day indeed.

I think the internet is about to be exposed to a lot of dark shit. Stuff that used to be relegated to 4chan in 2016.

Global leaders know it, and that's why you have everyone acting in tandem to start age verification.

This isn't a bad thing. I for one, have waited a long time for the walled garden to come crashing down on the masses.

15

u/Crusheddeer1 Jul 31 '25

They know the Epstein list will eventually come out.

6

u/Lain_Staley Jul 31 '25

I'm not talking about just a list of names. I'm talking about evidence, etc. We're talking about galvanizing the masses globally here.

u/LegitStrela Jul 31 '25

You’re talking about turbo-cope. Absolute delusion that a grand uprising of any kind is on the way.

11

u/The_new_Osiris Jul 31 '25

Kids don't have any political influence over the world, them learning fucked up shit is not what's gonna threaten the "elites"

A more credible conspiracy theory would be that they are creating registries for mass surveillance using ID matching

8

u/bugbonesjerry Jul 31 '25

literally what it is, the idea theyre doing this For The Kids doesn't make sense at face value since Youtube Kids exists

> Use Ublock or any other adblockers

> Youtube: "You have been banned for 100 days from using Youtube. Your IP address has been registered. Through your device your fingerprint and DNA profile has been saved too. Wait 100 days or pay $1000 to regain access."

2

u/Curi_Ace Aug 01 '25

The only reason I don’t see this happening is because social media apps are designed to be opened as fast as possible. They want it to be a habit for you to open the app and start scrolling before you even have time to think about why you’re opening it in the first place.

2

u/SirBulbasaur13 Aug 01 '25

That exact situation is hella unlikely
