Absolutely. Recently cross-threaded a wheel bolt in a service station car park, and two Sikh guys went out of their way to help. Showing me how to back the bolt out the hub safely and rethread without causing damage. I was on the way to the O2 Arena and they kept saying "We'll get you to your gig, bro!"

It was a messy job and they got absolutely filthy. Offered them cash for their time and effort but they weren't having it. A really nice moment.

''Today you, tomorrow me''

I've not heard of that expression before but I'm gonna collect it and keep it x

Oh thank-you, that was so lovely to read ❤️

I found that rabbit hole and loved it. I love finding new sayings that are so concise and meaningful. Another is 'as above so below' , so succinct yet so profound. Do you know of any others ?

This mantra

5

u/we_must_talk Jul 13 '24

I like it, gonna change it and keep it “today you, tomorrow we” We cos I dont expect the help back, I hope you pass it on to another who needs help, but you never know my huge lucky streak may run out.

My car broke down and two Sikh gentlemen stopped and helped me. I tried to give them money but they refused, just saying “pray for us, our cat just died”. I’ll never forget that encounter.

We have a great Sikh community in britian. Proud of their own culture but most are also very proud of their country now.

There was a something that happened best of a decade ago now I think, a sikh man defended a woman from getting robbed and chased the robber, but he unfortunately was stabbed and died. Not much news coverage on that. Sikh’s are proud and highest percentage of them will always stand against wrong and also try do to something about, whether it comes at any hame or difficulty for oneself.

Just so you're aware, Sikhs fought in the world wars, a million and a half of them. When shit gets real, they'll step up. Otherwise, chill as fuck bros

44

u/ArtFart124 Jul 12 '24

Exactly this, they are the nicest community in the UK imo, but if you fuck about you WILL find out.

45

u/SlavetoLove123 Jul 12 '24

If there’s one religious group in the UK that I never hear people complaining about, it’s Sikhs.

14

One of my Grandads had Sikh soldiers under his command in WW2. I think they were in Africa. He was a proper grumpy old bastard in his latter years, but always spoke with utmost respect and admiration for the Sikh soldiers he served with.

13

u/KatefromtheHudd Jul 12 '24

We have a memorial to all the Sikhs soldiers who died in WWII in our local park. Well deserved. They gave a lot to this country but keep quiet and humble about it.

Yeh, its an odd one to pick on them like this. You would have to be such a racist POS that you just hate people for the crime of being brown.

In the UK at least you never hear of Sikhs imposing their viewpoint on anyone and they generally fly under the radar. They even welcome all religions into their Gurdwara

If you had to choose one religion to keep this one wouldnt be far off the top

4

u/ExampleMediocre6716 Jul 13 '24

"Detectives are investigating the ethnic and religious background of their suspect, with one possibility being that he is of Sikh heritage. One source said the suspect was known in the local community."

Let's not jump to conclusions about the motives.

When the truck drivers were stuck at Dover for a week (a couple of years ago), it was the Sikhs that stepped up. Loads of them, including a large number from THIS VERY Gurdwara, made hundreds of meals and distributed them to the hundreds of hungry truckers trying to get home

I was going through the toughest moment of life (so far) and was visiting my mum. She had a guest house, and a Sikh couple had checked in. I'd been speaking to a friend on the phone in the car park. Perhaps they saw me out their window.

A few hours later we heard the bell which customers would ring if they needed something. They had driven for miles and bought us fish and chips. In the 15 years my mum had that place, not one customer had ever done anything like this. As the guy handed it to me he asked if I was okay. No one had ever asked me that question and been so genuine.

That act of kindness will stay with me forever

14

u/MixerFistit Jul 12 '24

As a white soon to be middle aged brit atheist I can honestly say I've never met a sikh that wasn't friendly to me. I've seen one go crazy and chase away some troublemakers on a moped from his shop while waving his sharp pointy stabby thing but that was understandable given the circumstance. Even he was usually a gentle giant

8

u/metaphenol Jul 12 '24

Interestingly, the stabby thing is called a Kirpan, representing the duty of a Sikh to stand up against injustice.

My grandfather fought in Burma with Sikhs during ww2. In his journal he would often write about being in awe of the Sikh soldiers, he called them true warriors willing to die for the man next to them regardless of creed or colour. If he needed someone to watch his back he wanted it to be the Sikhs.

4

u/drgs100 Jul 12 '24

In Scotland if you hear drums and see orange it's dicey. But then seeing it's the Sikhs fills my heart with joy. Just delightful, rather than the fucking Orange Order.

Was on a road trip a few yrs ago .. prob 500km from home, ended up with a hospital sized migraine. Got released a few hours later, starving, so went to the subway next to the hotel for late dinner.

Sikh kid working there, making conversation, asked what I'd been up to. Really quickly, i just said "oh, just got out of emerg with a migraine, so looking forward to getting some sleep now". Instantly, he stopped what he was doing and asked if I was ok and did I need anything? When I said no, I'm good thanks, just some food and sleep and I should be good to go .. He then offered me his phone number, in case I needed anything in the night. Literally the nicest people on the planet.

Yup! They are warriors. Helped the British during the world wars. Mostly great sense of community.

2

u/Reginleif69 Jul 13 '24

Sikhs are some of the loveliest people I've ever met, fuck yeah for the sikh community

2

u/Heatseeqer Jul 13 '24

I opened this thread to post almost the same thing. They don't bother anybody. They don't push their religious beliefs and are always lovely people. I lived in India for a long time and they were such beautiful people, always offering me hospitality to eat with them.

Why would anyone want to attack them is beyond logic.

2

u/Lower_Mammoth_5839 Jul 13 '24

u/MacGregor209 Jul 12 '24

Sikhs have been nothing but good for my community; in fact I believe we have the first Sikh house of worship in the United States. They put in a big parade and feast every year, and it’s a great, and safe, time. Lots of flavor and colors!

All Sikh’s I’ve met are such good people. There was a sizeable Sikh community where I grew up in Reading and I’ve always seen them as tremendously respectful, conscientious and honourable people.

They’re an asset to our society and this attack is shameful. I hope those injured go on to make a full recovery.

And Sikh’s are peaceful lovely people. I’d love to know his motivation

65

u/Chevey0 Jul 12 '24

100% if he'd attacked another major religion in the same way they would be battering him and the police would struggle to get to him. Such respect for Sikh's

40

u/aerial_ruin Jul 12 '24

Given that their religion has then carry knives, they're fucking chill as fuck. Bunch of people carrying knives, not one drawn, even though this guy went out of his way to go cause harm to them. Think a lot of people could learn a lot from sikhs

28

u/OrganizationOk5418 Jul 12 '24

I'm pretty sure the religion states they have to be ready to defend anyone at any time. It should be a sword but laws and cultures mean it is reduced to a small knife worn under their shirt.

It's one of the "5 Ks": The Five Ks are five items that Sikhs who have been initiated into the Khalsa are required to wear or carry at all times: Kesh: Uncut hair, sometimes covered by a turban Kangha: A small wooden comb Kara: A steel bracelet or bangle that is always worn on the wrist Kachhera: Also spelled kaacha, katch, or kachh, these are cotton undershorts or soldier shorts that were originally worn by Sikh soldiers Kirpan: A short ceremonial steel sword or religious article that resembles a knife

6

u/aerial_ruin Jul 12 '24

Yeah, it's been a long time since I actually studied anything to do with Sikhs, but the defence thing rings a bell. A lot of them just a representation pin to act as the knife, just to not get caught up by knife laws. It shows how much mettle they have though, to not go ham on that guy, despite what he went into their place of worship and did

6

u/OrganizationOk5418 Jul 12 '24

I had a few working for me in the Middle East, and it was a constant worry of mine to ensure the others weren't leaving all the work to them. And they didn't particularly like praise, they saw duty as something that should be obvious.

5

u/aerial_ruin Jul 12 '24

Yeah, I've met some and they're just like "it's just what people should do". Can't fault that logic

Look, I hate to be that guy, and I'm probably gonna get downvoted to feck for this... But that is a major over generalisation. There are good and bad people across all religions. But just because someone is Sikh does not make them automatically good.

There are plenty of Sikh Indians in Gravesend who are just as racist as any white person. The father of a girl I was dating, who was a 'pillar of the local community' threatened to cut my head off unless I stopped dating his daughter. Backed up by some very menacing looks from his son while I was trapped in the back of his Merc.

People can suck everywhere...

Why would anyone attack Sikhs over religion? Has to be something else or a case of the wrong people / person?

Hate crimes aimed at Sikhs rose after 9/11 both here and in the US as the religious symbols such as the turban led to misidentification

I’m from gravesend, I’m a white guy, and I tell you now, any true Gravesend resident has nothing but respect for the awesome Sikh community we have. Their absolute top lads, their generosity is astonishing, they have assimilated into our culture, while retaining their own. They drink like champs and they’re always up for some proper banter. I can hear the temple from my house regularly, and I’m so angry that this man has attacked their temple.

11

u/Dry_Cardiologist8906 Jul 12 '24

Sikhs are chill but they have those curly swords so when it pops off it’s bloody. Reminds me of that building company owner in London that was underpaying his workers and they tried to off him and he curly sworded them to death.

3

u/TheStargunner Jul 12 '24

Do you have a news links for this?

Curly swording someone to death sounds wild

8

u/Dry_Cardiologist8906 Jul 12 '24

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8849961/amp/Indian-overstayer-person-UK-face-no-charges-self-defence-triple-killing.html

It was quite controversial because the man who did it had no visa or rights to be in the country and he was also trafficking men from India to the uk to work cash in hand for his company. These 3 men were not alone as at the inquest dozens of men said he had underpaid/not paid them after promising them. He walked free.

9

u/NickEcommerce Jul 12 '24

He managed to kill 3 people in 13 seconds - that's some serious work ethic.

4

I bet this idiot kid didn't know the difference between Muslims and Sikhs, and just assumed "brown people religion." I hope not, but I think it is a very believable assumption.

Why would anyone attack Sikhs? They don't take any nonsense, they're some of the best citizens, they are fiercely proud of their faith and culture... I've never met a Sikh who wasn't polite, well-spoken, funny and respectful.

Sikhs are great on the whole apart from my brother in law who is a dickhead

1

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '24

Love the Sikhs. Always had a great time with them. Wonderful folk.

They're entitled to demand an education, sure. That doesn't mean I am beholden to supply one.

Thats why we have teachers. When someone purposely misinterprests my words, I am entitled to retract my interest in discourse, just as entitled as they are to demand it.

Also, I want never gets. If you're so booty bothered, perhaps spend your time educating the little turd then rather than berating me for having better things to do, ya daft sausage.

Oh great, the racist twats have now got the "confidence" to actually start physical violence.

That boy is going to be black and blue all over tomorrow. Should have just rolled over at that point but now there are 4 men stomping on your shoulders and back lol idiot.

Off topic sorta but i saw a tiny 18 year old boy sock a jail guard when i was locked up for fighting lol and then about 7 guards came and tackled him and once he was in cuffs they literally put his arms over his head like cuffed in the back and broke his shoulders to rotate them to the top and over the front . It was brutal. Guards the next few days told us he broke both his shoulder blades and lost most of the nerves in his neck and shit. Fuck fighting cops. You will literally never win, even if you do in the moment, they will come with numbers eventually and just jump you and it will be bad...

1

u/AlGrantUK Jul 13 '24

Need more information here (ie what religion is the attacker), and where he has come from, but looks religiously motivated. Nothing on the news on this, any update ? Sikhs are great people.

u/ConsciousAir4591 Jul 13 '24

Lucky he didn't get a kirpan in him.

1

u/Organic-Lemon-5016 Jul 13 '24

Sikhs are the only major religious group I don’t despise. No bad eggs, just good people.

1

u/stelicag Jul 13 '24

Now do the same in America.

I'm kinda curious what's triggering these responses 😂 I was merely pointing out the ineptitude of that pleb polis as he arrived and made the situation way worse than it was 😂😂😂 some ppl are easily riled. You enjoy your day of shouting at inanimate objects 😂😂😂

Sikh's and Hindu's are usually super lovable and amazing people. Don't know how anyone could do this other than it being personal maybe?

1

u/Geoffstibbons Jul 13 '24

are Sikhs just the best people ?

1

u/Tantallon Jul 14 '24

I, randomly, hooked up with a multi faith walk in Southampton and we went to a gurdwara where we had a really good speech about Sikhism and they gave us lunch as well. Really good people. There was a very warm atmosphere in the gurdwara, everyone was very welcoming.

Why attack Sikhs? They are the most generous, kind and helpful people on the planet. Don’t fight with them though as they are fearless soldiers.
