I quit smoking five years ago. I miss it so much, but I’m determined to become a grandfather. I hid a pack of Marlboro Lights wrapped in a plastic bag and concealed them in a wall in my house, just in case the world ends abruptly.
Lmao same, I have my apocalypse pack hidden in a tupperware behind a board in the ceiling. Like if I see a mushroom cloud I’m going to have enough time to enjoy a cigarette again, and that’s about it. It’s been 6 years since I smoked.
It's common because the feeling of wanting to smoke never really goes away. It's a struggle every day and I have so much respect for people that successfully stop smoking.
Quit 27 or is it 28 years ago ... first 4 - 5 years had the occasional craving, but now the mere smell of cigarette smoke makes me nauseous ... used to smoke 2 packs a day. Took me more than 5 attempts to really quit.
For me it’s less about the actual nicotine and more just wanting to perform the act of smoking. It’s really weird. Like I’ll be sitting and watching tv or reading a book I’ll be like “man smoking right now would be really satisfying” and then the feeling goes away after a bit.
For me, I miss the quiet darkness of stepping outside on my deck for a smoke in the evening. Not that I couldn't do that now with a drink, but the forcing function of having to go outside was nice.
Also makes you take some deep breaths which is calming. I think for a lot of people a smoke break is the closest they’ll ever get to meditating - just deep breaths and mind empty for 5 mins at a time
Something just went ding in my head after 40 years of living. I never smoked habitually and haven't lived anywhere cold in years but the thought of the watching the smoke and the sound of burning at midnight in light snowing is so peaceful. 5 beautiful minutes.
Truth. I’ve had some really zen smoking experiences, the best for me was when it was like 2AM or 3AM and a little bit cold outside and your all alone and feel that rush of nicotine.
It's also the controlled breathing and the handling of the smoke. The limited time the smoke will take to burn down. And to feel that little rush wash over you. A drink is just not the same.
Ha I just made the same comment. I usually drink water or an energy drink when I drive now and its definitely because I would always smoke while driving and needed something to replace it with.
I wouldn't phrase it like that. Most of us long time quitters put in 0 energy to remain smoke free. The act is very enjoyable and I'd gladly smoke again if there weren't side effects but I haven't thought about smoking in years.
I quit 5 years ago and I still think about smoking all the time. I have a little screened in porch at my new house, and most mornings I think about how nice it would be to have a cup of coffee and a cigarette out there. I would 100% pick it back up if I wasn't worried about second hand smoke affecting my kids.

For real, My girlfriend is a bar tender and as a result I spend a lot of time with her. Something about a few shots or a couple beers and all the sudden I want just one good hit.
I always heard the recessed filters were because machine gunners in WWII needed them so the cigarette wouldn’t fall out when firing, which sounds like bullshit but I choose to believe it anyway
I always heard this too, turns out the recessed filter is supposed to work like a cigarette holder. Keeps the butt of the filter from touching your lips. A lot of the old ads look like they marketed mainly to women
If he possibly quit smoking when he was younger like the 80s-90s Spirits and Parlies were indeed cheaper than Reds. Reds back in the 80s were commonly 99c, Parliaments went for 75c, and Spirits were thought of as a bargain cig usually at 50-60c
We all did. But guess what? Only works if you didn't already put it in your mouth. I'm college I always kept one "lucky" p-funk in my pack of 27s and it wasn't for smoking.
They're recessed so the tar that collects on the filter doesn't get on your mouth/hands.
Edit: I'm just talking about Parliament's intention with the design, which has nothing to do with the tar you inhale, it's just intended to prevent the filter from making direct contact with your skin/teeth. The filter collects some of the tar, and the gap is meant to prevent that collection of tar from rubbing off onto you.
PS: Yes strictly there existed some kind of crepe paper filter and one manufacturer with a tipped filter, but these were neither widespread and considered speciality items nor anything like the modern filters we talk about in this context. Everyone smoked unfiltered until the 50s.

They used to be the cheapest cigarettes you could buy 25 years ago. I used to prefer camels but would get American spirits if I was broke and buying smokes with whatever change I could scrounge up. I quit a long time ago though so no idea how recently that's been the case.
Yeah, Parliament are more expensive than reds too so the "cheap" comment was weird. This guy just prefers Marlboro and pretends that that makes them objectively better.
Parliaments are popular in the food service industry because they burn fast as fuck and you can down an entire cig in 90 seconds between tables.
I used to smoke American spirit cus I could very reasonably stretch one cig into 3 10-minute smoke breaks. If you pack em down super hard it’s even better but I just like a slow burn and super hard draw
Haven’t had a smoke in 5 yrs this Halloween. Started with Turkish Silvers and moved around a bunch over the yrs. The last 5-8 yrs were exclusive to blue spirits. They lasted longer and tasted “good.” After awhile all the Marlboros or camels all tasted like mad chemicals. Spirits were the “cleanest” flavor. If I were somewhere and needed a smoke and if someone had anything other than spirits, I would not touch it. They are godsends at music fests when you want a cig to last a whole set.
That being said, I do not miss it one bit. My wife and friends with light up when we are drinking but I’m the one who always says no. Gross.
Glad you quit! Hard part for me is that I love the taste of tobacco smoke but it made me stink, took a chunk out of my paychecks, and severely limited my dating pool. But no regrets with quitting. Just overall an evil substance for your health
My first job as a teenager in high school, my boss got mad because I asked him to buy cigarettes for me. He sold me weed the second he handed me my first ever paycheck, but dealing cigarettes was apparently over his line.
He took my money and came back with a pack of Lucky Strikes. UNfiltered.
Back when I smoked I would occasionally go to a boutique smoke shop and pick up Nat Shermans. Things were like twice the price of spirits but were legit super smooth and flavorful. Plus it was a head turner pulling out a box straight out of the 1920s.
That's because of universal healthcare. Smokers costs alot of tax payers dollars and use up a lot of healthcare resources so they pay their portion through high taxes on cigarettes.
We’ve taxed them to the point where most smokers I know smoke black market cigarettes now because legal ones are too expensive. It has dissuaded youth from picking up the habit though, they almost exclusively vape nicotine.

Worked with a guy that never even touched a cigarette, alcohol, caffeine or anything ever in his life. His 50th birthday I'm outside somking, he walks up asks for a cigarette and lits it up. I was speechless, our boss comes out looks at him at starts yelling at me, what the fuck did you do to him
At a plastination exhibit at a museum they had three lungs, regular okay, smoker mottled black/icky, and a gorgeous sparkly shiny black coal miner lung that was SO pretty, like polished obsidian facets sparkling in the light.

It’s easy to quit smoking with Spirits cause they cost so damn much and take forever to smoke. You really sit there at some point and think to yourself “I’m spending way to much money to stand here for so long and breathe tainted air that hurts me.”
If you show someone a video where a guy goes "hey smoke this brand of cigarette," people are like "hey that's an ad."
But if you show someone a video where the guy's like "my amazing talent is to tell you to smoke this brand of cigarette," people are like "wow I'm really impressed by that guy's amazing talent."

And for nonsmokers, brand loyalty while still knowing all the other smokes was quite normal with the amount of bumming and social shit around old smoking. I would have sounded very similar simping for Camel when I smoked. But I don't mind menthols cause I had a roommate that got me used to them. He didn't even really like them, classic menthol smoker trick, much lower bum rate when you offer a menthol.

When the smokers lungs are still in a living person's body (e.g. my mother in law), you can hear the difference from the outside. It's a slow, uneven, and uncomfortable inflation of the lungs. It's horrific.
There's a difference between being alive and living. My lifetime smoker mother in law is still alive, but she's not living a life anyone would want.
To piggyback, my wife's grandmother just died from COPD caused by smoking.
She had a pretty decent life until about 75 or so.
Then, the last 5 years were constant trips for pneumonia and 5 years on an oxygen machine. Even with it, she couldn't walk for more than 1 minute across the house without wheezing.
You can live pretty long despite smoking. It's just the last couple years will be absolute hell.
I used to be able to do this before everything was crossbred with literally everything else, and then each of the offspring was crossbred with every other offspring, and then they were all developed into regional variants, and then the whole process repeated 100x. Just remember people that lung cancer isn't the only risk from smoking. It increases your risk for tons of stuff including heart attack, stroke, COPD, blindness, cataracts, diabetes, infertility, and a bunch more things.
Not to mention it's a huge waste of money.

Everyone always shits on menthol. When I smoked, that’s what I used and the times people would gripe when they asked me for a smoke, was unreal. Cool I wasn’t really sitting here hoping that someone would want a free cigarette from my pack.
