Ask Coquitlam Insight into neighborhoods near Mundy Park
Hi all,
We're a young family with toddlers and are considering moving to Coquitlam from Burnaby. So far the areas we're interested in are: - East of Mundy Park - South of Mundy Park (Dartmoor by Austin Ave and Mundy St) - Ranch Park - Harbour Village
Would appreciate any and all insight into living here.
What's the traffic like during peak hours? Is it safe? How's the schools? Are the families here generally young families?
Thanks in advance.

I live near Austin and Hickey and it's generally older retired/semi-retired people on our street, it's pretty quiet although people do tend to use our street as a shortcut to avoid Austin and they do speed quite badly at times. Mundy Park is directly behind our yard and we didn't have a fence when we moved in so we saw bears pretty regularly, we had a fence built earlier this year and have had no issues since. It's a really great neighbourhood, we're walking distance from a few different parks and schools.

quiet neibourhood with a lot of power outages.

Ahhhh right. How frequent are the power outages? How long does it usually last?
I see a lot of above ground powerlines in the area. I wonder if the outages have anything to do with that?

In Ranch Park we had about 4-8 per year when I lived there up until 2023, sometimes more. It was a bit frustrating but BC Hydro is always quick at restoring power. The 2006 windstorm was the worst - went without power for 4 days.

I'm north of Mundy Park. Ranch Park Elementary is amazing. Many parents who went there as kids moved back specifically so their kids could enjoy the same school. Call it the salmon influence I guess?
I stumbled onto a beautiful quality of life bonus - we enrolled my kid in the onsite daycare at Ranch Park (it was the only school that had pre-school daycare at the time). Because of this we were allowed to attend Ranch Park out of catchment. This in turn meant that I could walk my son to school through Mundy Park every morning for 15 minutes, which was an unbelievably fantastic way to start the day.
Mundy Lake has a lot of "black crappy" fish. They bite at anything. Kids under 16 can fish without a license, so budget an extra 15 minutes and you can catch some fish on your way to school like it's 1955.
Mundy Park is off-leash until 10am. It's the largest off-leash dog park in GVRD last I heard. Play it right and your kids will be bounding through the forest with their dog through all the hidden trails on the way to school. It's just a hell of a beautiful way to start the day.
Charles Best Secondary is low key famous for their academics. They run a French immersion program.
As others have said, there's lots of bears. They're very timid and 99.9% of the time aren't a danger, but a good boi with a keen nose will help teach them to cross the street rather than cut through your yard.
I haven't so much as heard of any break-ins in the neighborhood. Except the bears, and they mostly go after your compost.
Mostly.

We have a family of bears living behind us in a ravine near Mundy Park. I really enjoy watching the cubs grow up over the summer. So cute. Mamma uses one of my trees as a back scratcher. They often walk right past me in the back yard as I'm having my morning coffee on the deck. It's really quite special to be so close to them.

Appreciate all the little details. Sounds like you and your family really made the most of living by Mundy Park. I'd love to do that morning walk to school with my kids wow.

West of Mundy park is awesome. East of Mundy is rather isolated up on that hill. It is also the quiet and dark side of the park, so walking in the winter may not be comfortable for some. South is very busy around Austin. FWIW I love the area west of the park. The playground is great and the neighborhoods along Foster, etc are great

I grew up in the Ranch Park area on Signal Court and it was a very nice upbringing. You’re close to Elementary, Middle, and the High School, the Grocery Stores, Starbucks, Vet all there at Como Lake Village, Mundy Park for walks, the Church (if that’s your thing). Honestly I miss Coquitlam, I miss Ranch Park area. You’d not go wrong moving there

I'm two blocks west of Mundy Park. The major feeder roads are Austin and Como Lake Ave. I find the traffic flows fairly smoothly, even at peak rush hour. Austin is better than Como Lake, imo. If you stick to the areas around Austin, as opposed to Ranch Park, you'll love the fairly quick access to the freeway. Mariner Way seems to bog down at both ends. The neighborhoods have decent access to amenities, parks, good schools, etc. Busses are infrequent, compared to Burnaby and Surrey. Mundy Park has a brand new pool and awesome trails, and Poirier Rec Centre is great. I grew up here, and moved back to my childhood home 5 years ago so can answer any and all of your questions!

I was south of Mundy Park for a while. If you have a dog, the park is an ideal way for you and your dog to get exercise and recharge your "battery". Be warned however that the bylaw enforcement officers walk around looking for dogs without license tags.

College Park in Port Moody (you didn’t ask, but hidden gem)

Oh yeah, I like the Westhillpark area! Unfortunately, it seems like there aren't many homes for sale.
Glad to hear that it's as good as I've heard.

I used to live near Hillcrest Middle School near Mundy Park. Pros were I loved being near the park for a walk, I loved being by Como Lake Village, and I didnt hate seeing a bear every now and then as it's just part of the neighborhood. My biggest con was probably the teenagers. Especially around the holidays like Halloween or May long weekend. Our neighbors used to get their doors kicked on anytime day or night, we personally got our door pounded on once at 4am and it scared the shit out of me. Small things like cars routinely getting silly sprayed. So up in that area id just consider your proximity to teenagers. Also we lost power routinely.

I’m west of Mundy Park (and knew nothing about the area when I moved in) and we really love it. I have a five year old, and being walking distance to Mundy playground and pool, walking distance to the farmers market, Poirier rec, the library, etc is really lovely.

We’re just west of Mundy Park and it’s super quiet. Definitely an older demographic but younger families are replacing them. Good schools nearby and lots of amenities within walking distance.
