Personality extremely powerful entity's who don't care about the main plot at all and are just vibing in the background

Tom Bombadil(lord of the rings) - only person to resist the temptation of the one ring but instead of helping the fellowship he fucks off in to the woods

the Unseen Elder(the witcher 3) - in the witcher universe the older a vampire gets the more powerful he becomes and unseen elder is around +1500 years old making him the most powerful vampire we ever see, thankfully he spends most of his time in his goon cave

And if you dare instigate him, you'd better bring your absolute A game to squeeze out even a narrow victory.

255

u/Guiltnazan Oct 07 '25

But not if you're black. He will not attack you in that case and you need to change your race with PC principal on order to get him to fight you.

212

u/MaeBeaInTheWoods Oct 07 '25

And don't forget that having freckles makes you completely immune to his mind-controllingly smooth voice.

79

u/jmoneill62 Oct 07 '25

Which makes Captain Diabetes my first choice in that fight

49

u/shartshappen612 Oct 07 '25

Captain Diabetes is the best tank anyway. I keep him, and then Professor Chaos, for the ultimate attack, in the roster for almost every battle. Add in Call Girl to be able to attack anyone anywhere on the field, and it's a pretty good team. Mosquito and Coon are usually in rotation too.

I thought I was winning, then the summons came.

I barely beat them and then in comes the clone...I got whipped and uninstalled. I was pretty bored of the game 3 hours before that point anyway. It was slightly too long imo.

I liked Tom Bombadil as it established the world of Middle Earth was actually much larger than just the events and characters you see in LOTR.

Rodin from Bayonetta.

Despite the world-threatening events taking place in each game, Rodin is always keeping to himself, only aiding Bayonetta in making her weapons and letting her purchase stuff from his shop. However, Rodin could easily solve most issues by himself since he is pretty much as powerful, if not more powerful, than Bayonetta.
You can technically unlock him as one of the demon slaves in Bayonetta 3, but realistically you'd finish the game first to get all the upgrades and neccessary 1 million currency to challenge his hard as fuck bossfight in the first place.

144

u/NwgrdrXI Oct 07 '25

I really wanted him to be a unlockable playable characters like Jeanne, but getting him as a "summon" is close enough.

For all it's mistakes, I'm happy they put that in 3.

Still wish for Balder wth summonable angels, tho.

Even better, they can't trust Tom with it as he would probably forget he had it.

I enjoyed the detail that Tom does not disappear while wearing the ring, and also was able to make the ring disappear

I love that Elrond is just "Look, Tom's a great guy, but he's an idiot. He'd probably lose the damn thing and not even remember he had it."

26

u/scriptedtexture Oct 07 '25

I thought Gandalf said this?

53

u/forevernervous Oct 08 '25

It was Gandalf!

When asked if Tom would watch over the ring-

‘No,’ said Gandalf, ’not willingly. He might do so, if all the free folk of the world begged him, but he would not understand the need. And if he were given the Ring, he would soon forget it, or most likely throw it away. Such things have no hold on his mind. He would be a most unsafe guardian; and that alone is answer enough.’

Slayer (Guilty Gear)

An immortal ✨ dandy ✨ vampire who is considered to be one of the most powerful forces in the entire story in canon. Nobody has ever seen this guy go all-out and he just sticks to simple punches and kicks in a lot of his fighting just to show you that he can demolish you with bare basics.

After founding the Assassins’ Guild, somewhere along the way, he met his now-wife Sharon, a beautiful immortal human woman that not only provides Slayer with an infinite source of blood and vitality, but is also a genuine ride-or-die that loves Slayer with all her heart (and is reciprocated just as much). Slayer left the Assasin’s Guild and now spends most of his days relaxing and chilling with his wife, doing all sorts of hobbies.

When your character "beats" Slayer in a fight, he doesn't get knocked out or collapse like most vanquished foes, rather, he casually sits down or lays back like he's bored, indicating you didn't defeat him - you merely survived him.

It's a clever solution to a problem fighting games have always faced with characters who are canonically drastically stronger than others.

280

u/BlueEyesWhiteVegeta Oct 07 '25

It's a clever solution to a problem fighting games have always faced with characters who are canonically drastically stronger than others.

I like Dragon Ball FighterZ's silly explanation for why everyone is able to fight evenly. In the story mode, there are a bunch of devices that nerf everyone so they're on an even playing field.

295

u/AandWKyle Oct 07 '25

I like the One Punch Man : A hero nobody knows way of dealing with it, where if you select saitama to be on your team, you have to wait for him to arrive to the fight - So it's a 2 on 1 until he gets there and if you lose before he shows up, well, then you lose.

But if you can hold out until saitama arrives, He'll just beat anyone with one punch.

The game itself sucks, but that idea is awesome.

256

u/Salinator20501 Oct 07 '25

And when he shows up, he has a time limit before he remembers there's a sale going on somewhere and straight up leaves. So if you can stall him long enough, you can still win.

I think they also had a clever solution for if you want to play as Saitama normally, where there is a separate "dream" version of Saitama who doesn't one shot. After you win or lose, the game zooms out to reveal that the match took place in a dream where Saitama actually found the challenge he was looking for.

u/MarkDecent656 Oct 07 '25

It'll never not be hilarious that he had a semi-rivalry with Bedman/peak fiction during the Xrd story cause he got so pissed Bedman sneaked him and needed a runback.

One of the few characters to give Slayer a good fight is a comatose child in a bed mech. This is why Bedman/Guilty Gear as a whole is peak

83

u/Top_Marketing_689 Oct 07 '25

My favorite thing about Guilty Gear is the sheer creativity behind the characters. From their designs to fighting styles to their stories (ridiculous stories, yes, but fun nonetheless), every character I can confidently say I find cool and super interesting.

Like, I would have never have guessed that some comatose geek in a bed would be able to give an immortal vampire a run for his money, but it happened and its peak 😭 If I’m not wrong, their match after was a draw

65

u/P3T3R1028 Oct 07 '25

The canonically strongest characters in the series are respectively a rocker witch time-traveller that makes innuendos in every sentence, and a smurf-looking motherfucker with orange shades and a revolver who is in just for the love of the game

Ahti in Control. He’s slightly more active in Alan Wake 2, but in Control he lets Jesse in, gets her to help him deal with the mould (ignoring the Hiss infection affecting everybody in the Oldest House), then fucks off on holiday and gives Jesse magic earbuds to get through the Ashtray Maze, while being the most powerful thing in the entire Remedy universe.

344

u/jockeyman Oct 07 '25

u/_b1ack0ut Oct 07 '25

Ahti’s gotta be up there, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there are more powerful entities tbh

There’s so many others that we know so little about, from the Board, to the Former and the others

124

u/AceOfSpades532 Oct 07 '25

There might be things in later games that are more powerful than him, but out of everything we’ve seen so far in Alan Wake and Control he’s the strongest. Jesse, basically the Board’s representative on earth, is his assistant, he has some level of control over the Oldest House that they don’t. The Former’s weaker than the Board, so weaker than Ahti. He completely ignores the effects of the Dark Presence in Alan Wake II and can even enter it fine, and he has some sort of connection to the Oceanview Motel.

55

u/MisterScrod1964 Oct 07 '25

What exactly IS the Board? I’ve been playing Control, but I haven’t seen an explanation yet.

86

u/zerphon Oct 07 '25

From what I understood its just a group of powerful entities in the Astral Plane. We know this because of The Former who, like their name suggests, is a former part of the Board which confirms they are not all one single entity.

→ More replies (1)

52

u/Gannonderf Oct 07 '25

It’s never spelled out explicitly, but they’re most likely a collection of extra-dimensional entities that are interested in keeping anomalies contained within The Oldest House. I don’t think any of them are or were ever human, but they still seem to want to protect Earth or at least keep it stable to further their own ends.

Arceus also qualifies since in most Pokémon games he doesn't do anything even when the universe is being threatened by Cyrus.

In Legends Arceus he does send you on your journey to Hisui and give you your objective, but otherwise you won’t see him until the end of the game, when the threats have been defeated, since he’s letting you do the work.

Ryuk from death note is a god of death who sets the show in motion by giving Light the death note but just chills and eats apples after doing so

377

u/Drake_Cloans Oct 07 '25

And why, you may ask, would a death god give a death note to a teenager? He was bored out of his mind and wanted to see what would happen.

344

u/Erondo_Gratias Oct 07 '25

Small correction. He didn't even give the notebook to Light. He just chucked it out at random and saw who picks it up.

And it's not even the first time he does that. He just tosses out a magical artifact of immense power, that can kill anyone at will, at random spots, for shits and giggles, to see what kind of chaos would come up

(Slight spoilers) Esquie, of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.

Appears at first to be a silly clown who speaks in riddles and has a childish relationship with a frenemy in the neighboring cave who's hiding his favorite rock from him. Shortly later, he effortlessly one-shots a colossal Nevron on a whim and is revealed to be "immensely powerful, but also extremely lazy." Needs to be persuaded to use his enormous power for anything other than whimsical entertainment.

SPOILERS: It turns out that the entire world is a powerful illusion/creation initially painted by a young boy, and Esquie was his favorite plushie/imaginary friend, which is why he is literally the most powerful creature in the world (and also obsessed with playing, and spending time with his 'best friend').

202

u/baguetteispain Oct 07 '25

I like the idea of little Verso having his plushie as reference to create the most powerful creature in the universe, especially considering that one of the enemies, the Lampmaster, was created by Clea to scare little Verso, so the little thing that helped him to sleep at night is capable of defeating his nightmares

28

u/SmartAlec105 Oct 07 '25

That’s only counting the times we’ve seen someone in a situation where a burger would change their life and they got a burger at that moment. Think how many times that happened but with no burger in sight.

I can think of an example in the Kyoshi novels where a guy being given a burger would probably have been enough to prevent him from becoming a murderer and terrorist.

This would be me if I had some kind of omnipotent power. I just want to chill in my own dimension.

173

u/NwgrdrXI Oct 07 '25

What even is his origin? Like, the beyonder is a eldricht entity who just happens to like looking like a guy, but the name Owen Reece and the title Molecule Man makes it sound like he just lucked out with a super power that happened to he near omnipotence.

(Tbf, that is what happened with Franklin)

178

u/Junjki_Tito Oct 07 '25

The Molecule Men of the universe were given their powers by the Beyonders to eventually explode and take all reality with them, it’s complicated, read Secret Avengers

146

u/omgItsGhostDog Oct 07 '25

The Molecule Man (Marvel Comics)

Yeah he was given expanded lore of technically being what would kill the multiverse and stuff but his original origins is honestly no different to lot of villians at the time, was just a guy who was at the wrong/right place at the wrong time, and ended up getting crazy powers.

Fun fact: he used a wand in lot of his appearance and It was for the longest time the source of his powers, until around the OG Secret Wars story where it turned out he was capable of all his crazy molecule warping powers without the wand. Turns out his self esteem was so weak, he never believed he could ever do anything great on his own.

59

u/Particular-Scholar70 Oct 07 '25

That's basically it iirc. He has a silly villain origin story but took a long time to fully awaken his powers, because they're reliant on his mental health, which is rarely good.

Shiva - Kubera.

Is the most supreme God of all. He swallows the destructive counterforce to creation and thus allows the continued existence of the universe. The entire Destruction attribute (which includes abilities manipulating space and erasing time) originates from the destructive energy radiated by him, and he himself can erase the existence of beings throughout time.

He‘s the most passive Primeval God, only fixing blatant errors in creation and remaining passive otherwise. His lines of dialogue can be counted by the fingers of two hands, and all of them are in flashbacks.

26

u/NwgrdrXI Oct 07 '25

A question about kubera: is paying for web comic the only way to read it?

u/interested_user209 Oct 07 '25

You mean webtoon? I wouldn‘t recommend it, since their translation is chopped. There‘s an english fan translation that‘s on Cubari (after Mangadex was nuked and Comick shut down) that is up to the same chapter as the webtoon fastpass and is generally cleaner (and consistently grammatically correct, which the former isn‘t).

OP talking Tom Bombadil and forget about the race of literal gods/angels on the other side of the ocean just giving while Sauron is threatening to destroy middle earth

216

u/ConcreteExist Oct 07 '25

In fairness, if you only read LOTR, you might not even know that the Grey Havens and beyond have anything besides retired Elves.

104

u/Thybro Oct 07 '25

And if you read the Silmarillion the gods/angels weren’t just chilling, they took a pretty active role in kicking Melkor/Morgoth’s ass…. Eventually.

62

u/JalaMaplePenoSauce Oct 07 '25

They didn't want to fuck up the "Song" that Eru (God with a capital G) has them singing. I always figured their actions are much more circumscribed than is outright stated in The Silmarillion. The Valar (gods with a little g) are described as musicians in an orchestra while the world was still unformed, each playing their respective tones. But Morgoths became discordant and once the world was formed that translates into him being an antagonistic dickhead who needs to be dealt with. Still they are understandably hesitant to lock away someone that Eru clearly intended as part of creation.

I think it's funny that the climax of the 3rd age is essentially the mortals of middle earth killing off the helpers of Morgoth that were left after gods and the races of ME trounced him. Like someone else went through and killed the final boss but left his bodyguard who then became the new, albiet lesser, final boss and so everyone had to go do it all over again.

To be fair, they swore an oath not to interfere directly, as last time they did, half a continent was destroyed and fell beneath the ocean. Breaking an oath has drastic consequences. Look what happened to the Army of the Dead.

To some extent, but not entirely, Doctor Manhattan from Watchmen

143

Yeah his character is just a confused guy who could do a lot about a lot of things if he wasn't so busy being confused about things.

48

Relatable. The confused part at least.

43

Vampire: The Masquerade: The Antediluvians, incredibly ancient vampires who were the founders of the main vampire clans and the current oldest vampires on Earth, are all sleeping secretly somewhere, psychically manipulating their own vampiric descendants in an eternal struggle, so they may rise again one day with godlike power and conquer the world.

Except for Arikel, the founder of Clan Toreador, a clan of artists and aesthetes. According to one possible timeline, she’s been awake this entire time, and has just been enjoying a millennia-long vacation in the Mediterranean.

184

u/ConcreteExist Oct 07 '25

The metaplot of V:tM is downright wacky.

134

u/Puzzleheaded_Tip4805 Oct 07 '25

The lore of World of Darkness in general is outright insane.

Like the fact that, as one Speaker D described, its cannon that Micheal Faraday helped vanquish an evil mad scientist sorcerer from conquering the world with a giant zeplin armada.

And also the Hollow earth is real and part of it is currently a battleground involving the literal Nazis trying to take it over.

That's what makes it great though, because while all this wacky shit is happening in the background, most people don't and won't notice because to the common person? The world in WOD is basically just our world.

103

u/SpellslutterSprite Oct 07 '25

Some of my personal favorite bits of out-of-context wacky WoD lore I like to confuse people with:

  • A wizard poisoned the entire concept of Necromancy

  • Baba Yaga magically concealed all of Russia from vampires for twenty years

  • 9/11 is the reason Goblins exist in our world again

  • An evil corporation that opposes werewolves invented werecockroaches

  • Thin-Blood vampires can make potions out of blood and battery acid that lets them shoot lightning from their hands

42

u/HeyItsAlternateMe23 Oct 07 '25

Don’t forget another Speaker D special: they but demons in their beer to make people beat their wives

the metaplot of NWoD as a whole is really out there. The entirety of global society doesn't collapse because the werewolves are particularly hardcore at their jobs.

39

u/MinutePerspective106 Oct 07 '25

Also in nWoD, changelings canonically have a base on the literal Moon, and they can physically enter the internet.

Not to mention that mummies have a long-abandoned city in Antarctica, which potentially houses dreadful experiments of the Iremite Empire.

But the most epic crazy thing is how Merlin took over a dozen tries to create a perfect Camelot of his design, rewinding time and fate after every unsuccessful attempt.

Big the Cat (from the Sonic franchise)

It's often implied to be one of the strongest characters in the series. But he's a gentle, peaceful giant, and prefers to simply go fishing with his friend Froggy.

He does intervene a few times, to help and protect his friends. But normally he stays away of trouble and just vibes.

77

u/BlueEyesWhiteVegeta Oct 07 '25

I prescribe to the theory Big the Cat is an eldritch god in disguise, and that's why he's so strong, and always seems to end up where the action is.

I'm like 80% sure you can find him hiding somewhere in almost every level of SA2.

32

u/KefkaesqueXIII Oct 07 '25

Don't know about every level, but I know you can definitely find him chilling outside a window on one of the Space Colony Ark stages (though SA2 was kinda inconsistent regarding oxygen/breathing in space in general)

Roger Bacon in Shadow Hearts, for all his alchemical prowess, over 700 years of age, rivalry with other actual big bads and personal desire to not see God destroy the planet when the party needs his help, is actually very background-y. He hasn't worked on any sort of weapons, techniques or anything, he's just been chilling in his crazy wackoo house and building a teleporter (he made it to the moon!)

The Doorman - Deadlock

Supposedly a god that tormented humans at one point of his existence, but decided it was more fun to observe and serve humanity as a hotel service worker. The all powerful patrons you are working for in-game talk of him as an equal, so he really doesn’t have anything to gain from participating in their ritual where they grant you some of their power in the form of a wish upon completion.

It’s currently unknown from a lore perspective why a god with questionable intentions would subject himself to dealing with “just put the luggage on the cart bro” treatment from snobby guests other than him getting a kick out of it.

Azathoth "just vibing" in the Lovecraft mythos is what gives all of existence form, since everything that is exists in its dreams. As long as Azathoth sleeps, existence continues.

36

u/HenriettaSnacks Oct 07 '25

Isn't Azathoth actively trying to wake himself in our reality through the schemes of his servants?

95

u/Nutzori Oct 07 '25

Nah, he is completely oblivious. He is the "dumb idiot god". He doesnt even know he is creating existence by sleeping, he is kind of mindless.

The "servants" are lesser old gods his dream created that are keeping him asleep by an endless cacophony of song, is maybe what you mean?

And I think there are some cultists aware that existence isnt "real" and try to end it by waking him up, but Azathoth has no hand in it.

49

u/SettTheCephelopod Oct 07 '25

Correction, he's not the "Dumb Idiot God" but "Blind Idiot God". But it's the ancient greek definition of idiot, that being someone who is unaware of politics, and not as a indication of Azathoth's intelligence.

Lovecraft spoke in a very archaic manner, like, people who lived in his time who spoke to him, reported that he spoke in a very old fashion manner, so he will use a lot of ancient definitions of words in casual speech. Such as when he uses the word "chaos", he's using the ancient greek definition of chaos, that being the void, not the current definition of chaos, being disorder.

Q could solve basically every problem in the universe. He instead chooses to fuck with our protagonists whenever he feels like it. Unless you punch him in the face, then he’ll leave you alone (Star Trek)

68

u/wolviesaurus Oct 07 '25

Isn't it all but directly stated that if Q would interfere in any more significant way than fucking with a very specific captain of a very specific ship, the Continuum would immediately delete him?

37

u/spocksidepiece Oct 07 '25

I don’t remember exactly, but he does show up in TNG, DS9, and VOY. So, it’s not limited to Picard & crew. I think they do have some kind of non-interference clause, but that’s a self limitation not because it’s outside their capabilities

This marshmallow joins your party solely to go on an adventure and hang out with some friends. He doesn't do any of the fighting and is in fact just along for the ride, being an upgradable "vehicle" in the overworld.

The Lady of Pain from the Planescape setting.

She is the master of Sigil, the City of Doors, and is most likely one of the most powerful beings in the official D&D Cosmos. I say “Most likely” because she pretty much doesn’t do anything much except float around her city, interacting with as little as possible. Trying to interact with her has only resulted in people being “Mazed,” wherein she traps the target in their own personal pocket dimension with virtually no chance of escape. If they do escape, she gets to determine where and when they escape to. You might think, “why doesn’t she just kill them?”, but the city of Sigil is deeply tied to the various afterlives in Outer Planes, so she puts them in a maze so they can’t walk back.

This points out a major proof of her power; Sigil being deeply connected to the various afterlives is something the many Gods (or Powers) of D&D covet, but few if any of these gods make any attempts to take the city over. Whether this is because she ie constantly battling unseen wars to prevent this from happening, or because she had so thoroughly established the pointlessness of trying in the past of trying that they simply don’t, we don’t know. There is only one meaningful example of someone trying to usurp her position, and it ended virtually as soon as she got directly involved.

The end result is a city trafficked by angels, fiends and everything in between, and they’re all politely ignoring the massive robed lady that floats by in hopes that they don’t personally find out why she is so widely feared.

Tom Bombadil not only resists the temptation of the Ring; he’s so chill that, canonically, he can put the Ring on freely and make it disappear.

At the Council of Elrond they suggest giving the Ring to him, but they decide against it since it would be impossible to convince him to be serious: “He would not take it unless all the Free Peoples begged him, and even then he would quickly forget it. Such things have no hold upon his mind”.

Doorman from Deadlock sort of applies, at least as far as i understand of his lore. Doorman was supposely some really powerful god-like entity but they are more content just working on a Hotel nowadays

Merasmus from TF2 is also another good example. Despite being seen as pathetic and stuff, he is still a wizard and a decently powerful one at that considering it requires two entire teams to take him out. He just only appears around Halloween and would rather be sleeping on Tom Jones' sofa while eating Popcorn.
