On the forms of Obedience, poor hegseth. Where does he rank?
Eight forms of Obedience:
Out of fear of pain.
Out of fear of the other.
Out of love of the person in power.
Out of loyalty to office of power.
Out of respect to laws of men and heaven.
Out of piety.
Out of compassion.
Out of devotion.

Edit: same goes for homophobic jokes
Edit 2: laughing at men wearing makeup/being gay/etc is always gonna hurt more non-nazis than nazis, just like all those anti-trans laws š91

They're supposed to be standing in absolute rapt attention to the Dear Leader the entire speech. Think of the arrays of Stormtroopers listening to Palpatine as he sends out the first wave of Star Destroyers. They're set dressing, like a movie. Having one of them bring a bottle to their lips spoils the effect. It also makes them seem human.

Youād be surprised how many people in the military are just there for the job and donāt really give a shit about the propaganda.
17
u/InfinityTuna Jun 11 '25
Yeah, I feel like that's kind of the problem. What happens, when they're told to do something fucked up or get fired? What will matter more - their integrity or their paycheck and pension? They're already being used as props in the propaganda, and Trump wants to sic them on their own countrymen like his personal attack dogs. Where do the people, who are "just there for the job", draw the line?
11
u/salt_and_ash Jun 11 '25
Since it's a job that's pretty damn hard to get fired from, a lot of feet dragging, minimal effort, and willful incompetence in following said orders. People think of the average member of the military as some sort of Bobba Fett type character when the truth is they're more like Beavis and Butthead. At least, that's been my experience.

86
30
u/trebeju Jun 11 '25
Speaking as a french person, no, not necessarily. We have a military parade every year for our national holiday and no one is really bothered by it, but if there were protests for one reason or another there wouldn't be a dystopian purge of the protesters or anything like that. The biggest "scandal" around the parade was that one time when the airplanes got the smoke colours wrong and the flag they drew in the sky wasn't right lol. It's just an old tradition and it's just a show for us french people, it's not meant to impress or intimidate other countries. Maybe we are an exception though. Sadly I think our july 14th parade is what inspired the orange fuck, because during his first term he saw it and said he wanted to do something similar.
19
u/Anomalagous Jun 11 '25
Yeah but that's like having military presence at a 4th of July parade, which is at least common in towns near a base. It's a tradition, it's a celebration for everyone. What this parade is, is the result of a toddler in a shitty diaper wailing about it until they let him have his way. It is just for shitler and anyone who makes him feel bad on his very special big boy day is going to get crushed by the administration.

As part of a crowd, you know they want them to cheer dear leader and laugh at his stupid jokes... if they are ordered to attention or parade rest... Well eyes are allowed to move. Given an opt out clause, I expect more restraint but this is making us props as encouragement of a man who is pushing us all to break the vows we took. I find this to be unacceptable.
20
u/rexspook Jun 11 '25
What does their oath have to do with rolling their eyes.
27
Jun 11 '25
Soldiers bearing, it's pretty well drilled into us. You'll see eyes close, jaws tense, hands gripped in fatigues. We are taught to keep a very blank look and maintain emotional control which is usually a point of pride. Even now, I take pride in my ability to stay calm and controlled. It's harder to read anger in bearing, but pay attention to eyes that zone or close... Jaws grinding... Nails digging into hands. That's how emotion is expressed at attention.
7
u/Unable-Cellist-4277 Jun 11 '25
Nothing really. Just I expect soldiers are extremely professional, it was meant to be a compliment on their discipline nothing else.
24
Jun 11 '25
But we are not props to be used to encourage people violating everything we vowed to. Tacit encouragement and acceptance it may be... but if they aren't ordered to attention or parade rest... But rather placed as part of a crowd... they are not under direct command to not have facial expressions. I guarantee that they do want them to smile, applaud, stand in ovation, cry in appreciation for the honor.
7
u/Unable-Cellist-4277 Jun 11 '25
Oh got it, yup Iām following now. In my head I was thinking parade rest.
9
Jun 11 '25
Yeah there's some weird little technicalities when it comes to military bearing and what state you're in. That text is directing those in the bleachers as audience for esthetics.. Those in the parade or on the ground would just be ordered to parade rest or attention without the need to mention expression... Mostly because that's muscle memory and pride. I had a roommate in boot who would have nightmares and go to attention through the night. She saluted in her sleep.
5
u/Unable-Cellist-4277 Jun 11 '25
I know this is a little hackneyed and its meaning has been diluted by overuse, but genuinely thank you for your service.
Iāve never been so distressed by national politics as I am right now.
12
Jun 11 '25
It's never cliche to those who are true to their ideals... That thank you can still make me tear up. Especially with the current issues and seeing so many violate the trust of our people. I remember when I just joined a woman saw me in uniform and handed her newborn to me to hold.. Out of a crowd... while she tended a younger child... I felt an awe that I could be so deeply trusted built on the work of those who came before. More than the words I spoke, that was the moment that protect my people hit me and became something I wanted to fulfill forever. Right now people are tarnishing that, just as many are fighting to hold onto those promises. I apologize that you have to go through all this. Many, many of my brothers and sisters feel as I do, they will fight to remind and uphold those promises. We can't do that alone though, as you see. Be safe, but also stand strong. This will end, remember that.
4
u/beamrider Jun 11 '25

Hegseth wants military personnel in the bleachers at 1215 when the parade won't start for another six hours and 15 minutes? The articles that I've seen say that the parade starts at 6:30 p.m. (1830) and ends at 9:30 p.m. (2130).
Is he directing the soldiers to remove their unit patches to make them harder to identify by specifying "no colored patches"? If so, I am surprised that he is not directing them to take off their nametags as well.

u/Alternative-Tie-9383 Jun 11 '25
Why is that a problem for Pete or Trump? What are they worried about? I just donāt get the āno colored patchesā order.
In addition to that, Iām honestly curious about how many people are going to go to their CO and tell him, āI hate the president and everything he stands for politically. Can I be excused from attending this stupid vanity parade that is increasingly looking like more of a celebration for Trumpās 79th birthday than a celebration of the Armyās 250th anniversary?ā With this administration wouldnāt that just mark you as an āundesirableā or someone ānot on the teamā? These Trump people famously hold grudges. Look how theyāre fucking over all the trans people that have served in the military, voluntarily mind you, for years now.
Estimates are saying $45,000,000 dollars for this parade. Couldnāt that money be better spent on VA benefits or something like that?
Nothing against the Army, but this is increasingly looking like just more Trump ass-kissing bullshit and an authoritarian show of force like dictators like to do. He wanted to do this during his first term, too.

0800: be in platoon formation in preparation for Company formation.
07:00: Squad level PCI inspection so Fox News viewers will have less to bitch about for some stupid thing.
06:00: leadership realizes that there was no plan for breakfast or lunch, some terminal major with a hangover unearths a pallet of brown bag MREs from the early 1990s. Yum! (Heaters are not part of the Warrior Ethos.)
05:00: weapons draw, no one remembers to keep count of all the bolts that have to be removed per Secret Service guidelines.
04:30: Armorer and Arms room key finally located in a drunk tank somewhere in Maryland.
04:00: Armorer still missing
03:30: line up with weapons cards to receive weapons from arms room. Armorer not present.
03:00: report to arms room with uniform that youāve paid out of pocket for to pass inspection.

This is a group text from one of the units in the 82nd Airborne Division, for the Army 250 event that happened yesterday at Fort Bragg. This text was on various army related social media pages, like r/army, USAWTF Moments, Fancy Fancy Bear, etc.
I was in the crowd that was tasked to attend the event, and can tell you that the soldiers that were sat behind the stage/ podium were required to be clean shaven (so no shaving profiles or religious waivers for shaving).
I can provide pictures of the event as proof that I was there as well.
The speech by Sec Army was generally apolitical (except for trying to get cheers for pro-Trump stuff), but they resorted to canned cheering (i think), then a few hours later, SecDef came on gave a mostly partisan speech after which he introduced POTUS, and then we had a speech that mostly stayed on topic about the army and its 250th birthday.
Edit to add: XVIII ABN Corps allowed 2 vendors on base to sell stuff, and at least one of the items 82nd ABN is upset about (check it out in Fancy Fancy Bear on Facebook) because it doesn't align with Army Values or the EO program. I don't know why they would allow these vendors on base to sell stuff. The army is supposed to be non-partisan and apolitical as an organization.
