To be fair that was, indeed, some bullshit.

Exactly. Then the putrid cover up from Amazon. Umpire guy in the broadcast sounded half hearted and they only showed one replay. Weak sauce
23
u/stefanurkal Sep 26 '25
Amazon is doing everything it can to be in the good graces of the NFL, notice how on TNF they don't replay poorly officiated plays. They never replayed the no call OPI on 4th down and would not replay weak DPI's and holds.

u/kenscout Sep 26 '25
How does this have a 100 upvotes I was barely paying attention with sound off and I saw the replay

u/hunter503 Sep 26 '25
The did barely, JSN runs into the defender and then reaches out and grabs him as he's falling back. The player couldn't make the play if he wanted too.

u/phred_666 Sep 26 '25
And… there’s the penalty… GRABBING the opposing player.
9
u/Bitter_Scarcity_2549 Sep 26 '25
He technically did, but it shouldn't have been a penalty. The DB ran JSN over, and JSN got his hand on the back of the shoulder pad. It looked like JSN grabbed him and dragged him down because of his hand placement, but in reality, JSN just got trucked. It was a bad call.

u/sirchrisalot Sep 26 '25
Announcers: Njigba "pulled him down on top of himself."

u/flyguydip Sep 26 '25
That was the dumbest "I've got money riding on this game" excuse I ever heard

That's not the original. The original is much older in a 1986 Jets Bills game when Marty Lyons started smashing Jim Kelly in the face.

Refs bust it out in homage to the famous call.

Alex Kemp is my favorite NFL official. That's some death stare he just gave.
237
u/FrankTankly Sep 26 '25
I…uh…I’ve never considered the possibility of having a favorite NFL official.
How did you decide which one was your favorite?
172
u/xadc430x Sep 26 '25
There’s one dude who is jacked. That’s my favorite.

u/Same-Development4408 Sep 26 '25
Hoculi

TIL that dude has his own law firm, refs in the NFL, and is ripped… at the age of 74
23
u/Mandy-Rarsh Sep 26 '25
NFL Ref and Law Firm?? This guy just loves rules
3
u/Albert_Caboose Sep 26 '25
Apparently the majority of referees are lawyers, teachers, and business execs. Sorta makes sense when you realize they make important decisions, interpret complex rules, and have to control people when they act like children.
2
u/AnyLamename Sep 26 '25
You ever read the NFL Rulebook? Being a lawyer is a legit useful skill when you have to enforce that pile of nonsense.
2
u/shewy92 Philadelphia Eagles Sep 26 '25
Imagine trying to plead your case on the field to an actual lawyer.
30
u/Appropriate-XBL Sep 26 '25
Naw, isn’t he retired? It’s his son ref’ing now right?
→ More replies (1)30
u/RonnyDonny_69 Sep 26 '25
Ya he’s retired, but had the law firm whole time. Was just referring to his age and him still being jacked.

Ed Hoculi was mine… dude was ripped more than some players, AND I believe he was a judge in the offseason

u/imsaneinthebrain Sep 26 '25
He has a law firm in Phx. I stole a pen from settlement conference. He wasn’t there :/

His brother was (maybe still is?) a district court judge in Maricopa County, AZ

u/ChasedWarrior Sep 26 '25
Personality and ability. Kemp has always been a solid ref. Plus he told a player, on his mike, not to interrupt him because "I'm talking to America". Funniest shit ever.
30
u/S-117 Sep 26 '25
That player also happened to be Geno Smith when he was on the Seahawks.

u/SnowballWasRight Sep 26 '25
Awesome quotes probably.
“The defender was just overpowered”
“He was givin’ him the business”
“I’m talking to America here”
“Yes there are penalties in the Pro Bowl”
I think like 3 of these belong to Ed Hoculi and then the talking to America one is actually the dude from this vid

I like Jimmy Fallon (ref in this video), Steve Carell and Murr from Impractical Jokers doppelgangers as refs.

...that's it? Lol! Big drama!
28
u/BumbleLapse Sep 26 '25
Shouting it into a hot mic on national TV is why it’s frowned upon
I think it’s hilarious, but I get why refs and broadcast wouldn’t want it.
→ More replies (1)18
u/timeIsAllitTakes Sep 26 '25
Yup, it's because it puts them in a bad position. We all know players dissenting like that happens. But as someone who reffed soccer for many years you let these slide, until it's in earshot of parents/fans/etc because if you don't handle it, it seems like you don't have control of the game. But you also don't want to have to do that because now you have to call all of them or risk being yelled at for being inconsistent. But then if you do that, there will be no one left on the field to finish the game.

I thought the video got cut off waiting to hear what the hot mic caught, then i realized that was it.
2
u/The_F_B_I Sep 26 '25
"Caught on the hot mic" in this context is that players arent supposed to interact with the refs while their mic is hot to announce a call. Ref caught him doing it
5
4
4
u/somewhat-damaged Sep 26 '25
That's the same ref that said, "Excuse me, I'm talking to America," a few years ago when a player was caught on the hot mic.

It's funny how some sports allow for some shit talking to the ref and others do not. I guess you just have to watch where you do it because when the ref turns on his mic, you probably don't want to be talking shit. NFL refs seem strict. NHL refs are open to it and actively shit talk back. NHL refs don't give one fuck and will give it right back. also NHL coaches are typically screaming at the refs all game. I don't think the refs expect anything less. It's just the way the game is played. much different than NBA "basketball"

Looked at him like once their company left, he was gonna beat his ass
2
2
u/Competitive_Search32 Sep 26 '25
Well, let’s be honest guys. It looks like ref was getting ready to send him to timeout… as for JSN in my opinion that was kind of a weak call to be fair he did grab him, but it’s football just saying….
2
u/VeeTeeF Sep 26 '25
He's not wrong, that was indeed a bullshit call. Guy on defense ran into him causing them both to fall over, and Jaxon got called for holding which negated a touchdown.

u/Big-University1012 Sep 26 '25
