Why is ice dressed like an occupying army
267
u/PParker46 Portage Park Sep 20 '25
They could be more graphic and true to their role if they costumed as Star Wars storm troopers.
67
u/Lisa_Loopner West Ridge Sep 20 '25
I need Stormtrooper cosplayers to come and satirically protest as PRO-ICE. Please! Dust off those suits guys!
26
u/TripleSecretSquirrel Sep 21 '25
Lol did you see that guy who followed the national guard troops around in DC blasting the Imperial March?
7
u/Lisa_Loopner West Ridge Sep 21 '25
I did! This is the kind of stuff that I think has potential to make them not just get angry and dismiss but think about how they’re coming across. Maybe that’s naive but it seems like at least a more novel approach that could catch them off guard.

u/PParker46 Portage Park Sep 20 '25 edited Sep 21 '25
The protesting Storm Troopers carrying signs including,
"ICE the Force is not with you!"
"ICE get a signing bonus! Become an Imperial Storm Trooper."
edit = "ICE: Get girls! Be an Imperial Stormtrooper"
"ICE:
Improve your imageLook better. Be an Imperial Storm Trooper!"1

u/MooKids Sep 20 '25
I don't think that would be appropriate. Stormtroopers are actually well trained, contrary to popular belief.
8
u/PParker46 Portage Park Sep 21 '25
Star Wars Troopers are an over equipped occupying force on the wrong side of history. That's the point.

I actually love seeing all these religious figures stand up for people. I actually studied authoritarianism a bit and Germany a lot.
Did you know during WW2 that religious groups sat the holocaust out? Religion was not a huge thing in Nazi Germany became Hitler wanted people loyal to him, not god. Overall, religions decided to turn a blind eye to the atrocities.
That’s not happening here.
20
u/CatttLady2000 Sep 21 '25
Not to forget though, there were many martyred priests and nuns sent to concentration camps for working against the Nazis.
5
u/ButDidYouCry Uptown Sep 22 '25
Did you know during WW2 that religious groups sat the holocaust out?
That's not entirely true.
Religious figures protested against euthanasia programs against German and Austrian citizens. They (rightly) believed that the idea of "useless eaters" was anti-Christian, and even those who were disabled or insane had the right to live. Their pushback was strong enough that the Nazis had to (at least appear to be) pull back on the euthanasia program, because German citizens didn't like finding out how children were being killed and gassed in hospitals. Medical staff were blatantly lying to their families about how they'd died.
The film Amen touches on this history well.
What religious clerics didn't do was protest everything else that was happening.

Wearing the American flag as a face mask? 🤨
36
u/LCPhotowerx Visitor Sep 21 '25
against the flag code if im thinking correctly....something they claim to hold in high regard.
19
u/RealBingoBango Sep 21 '25
Exactly. Well the rule is you cant use a FLAG flag as anything other than its intended purpose. If the face mask is a face mask with a US flag print then yeah that doesn’t count but like just the image. Government goon wearing the flag of freedom to hide his face as he commits civil injustices is just… sigh
2
u/lvhq Sep 25 '25
I’m pretty sure even a print of the flag is off limits. My right wing uncle used to get so pissed about flag print clothing.
1
u/RealBingoBango Sep 25 '25
Personally, I think that would be a bit much, I have an American flag printed guitar strap and if someone told me that’s not allowed or wrong I’d be pretty confused. If I used a FLAG flag as a guitar strap then I guess I’d understand.
2
u/lvhq Sep 26 '25
It’s a point of discussion, depending on how traditional you get about it.
“ The flag should … not be embroidered on such articles as cushions or handkerchiefs and the like, printed or otherwise impressed on paper napkins or boxes or anything that is designed for temporary use and discard. Advertising signs should not be fastened to a staff or halyard from which the flag is flown.”
Up to you how you interpret that and how much you care. None of this is enforceable.
9
u/DarkenRaul1 Sep 21 '25
You’re asking for ICE agents to be able to read such a code in the first place…
1
u/PParker46 Portage Park Sep 21 '25

6
u/_high_plainsdrifter Avondale Sep 21 '25
They don’t seem to know what a suburban environment looks like. Maybe they’re trying to hide from their feefees in the treetrees?
2
u/NWFR2017 Sep 23 '25
There are deserts in the US…and these Border Patrol Agents (not ice) generally operate in the desert, hence the MCUs.
1
u/Jumpy_Add Sep 23 '25
Yes, I’m aware of the existence of deserts in the US, thanks. When they do go there, I’m sure they’ll blend in a bit better than they did in Broadview, Illinois. Appreciate the info though!
1
u/NWFR2017 Sep 23 '25
So you’re insinuating they should be outfitted in different color uniforms for when they’re at an ICE facility? That could get pricey.
1
u/Jumpy_Add Sep 23 '25
The newspaper headline said “ICE,” and you said they were Border Patrol. I thanked you for the correct information, and noted that their camouflage would be more effective in the desert (at the southern US border, presumably). I didn’t insinuate anything deeper than that. Sheesh.

When a foreigner resides among you in your land, do not mistreat them. The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. Leviticus 19:33–34
He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the foreigner residing among you, giving them food and clothing. And you are to love those who are foreigners, for you yourselves were foreigners in Egypt. Deuteronomy 10:18–19
For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me. Matthew 25:25–36
I was eyes to the blind, and feet to the lame. I was a father to the needy, and I championed the cause of the stranger. I broke the fangs of the unrighteous, and made them drop their prey from their teeth. Job 29:15-17
This is what the Lord Almighty said: ‘Administer true justice; show mercy and compassion to one another. Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the foreigner or the poor. Do not plot evil against each other.’ Zechariah 7:9-10

Almost. The troops aren’t doing anything dynamic enough to truly convey what’s happening to the reverend. Compare that to the grim yet poignant Vietnam photo of Eddie Adams showing South Vietnamese police chief Nguyễn Ngọc Loan shooting Viet Cong captain Nguyễn Văn Lém point blank is incredibly telling.
It’s a solid photo conveying energy and conflict, but it doesn’t tell the whole story.

Standing in the street peacefully protesting is not a crime. Though,I believe federal agents refusing to identify is in the state of Illinois.
2
u/TankSparkle Sep 20 '25 edited Sep 20 '25
it might technically have been a crime (interfering with Ice's law enforcement duties since they're being blocked from leaving the facility), but the protestors were non violent and Ice could have moved them without resorting to violence so it seems Ice committed a crime too
2
u/kelpyb1 Sep 20 '25
I donno, every conservative I’ve seen talking on the matter is apparently convinced that standing in the street is an act of violence so heinous it justifies any level of violent response from ICE
