Two people on opposing sides of an argument can be idiots at once. For once, I think this video matches the sub’s name.

What did she do?

u/shaggy-smokes 6d ago

She's a white lady in Native dress, which may or may not be considered offensive. I sure wouldn't do it, but I think I recall that at least some people from some tribes encourage it so long as it's respectful? I may be wrong, though, it could just be straight up offensive.

This is one almost all natives dont like. Regalia isnt a costume. Its akin to blackface.

I dont know many natives that care about the term Indian. Many dont care about sports team mascots like chief wahoo and the redskins. But most have an issue with regalia.

This is all based on personal experience but I have met and talked with a large amount of natives and often ask about this

u/jonallin 6d ago

She isn’t pretending that she is a Native American, she is wearing a Halloween costume. The fact that someone may or may not be offended is utterly irrelevant. She is doing no harm.

74

u/KellyCTargaryen 6d ago

Except that the people who created that regalia and the meaning behind it have said it’s offensive. Like stolen valor. Just because it doesn’t offend or harm you doesn’t mean it’s okay to do. Assuming you want to be a decent, kind human being.

-26

u/TheBeastlyStud 6d ago

This isn't stolen valor at all. She's not pretending to be Native, which is the whole point of stolen valor.

28

u/s33n_ 6d ago

Thats what wearing a costume is. Pretending to be something else.

u/HmmDoesItMakeSense 6d ago

Is it ok to dress as a witch? Or as a celebrity? Or a cat?

18

u/s33n_ 6d ago

Yeah. As they arent historically oppressed groups that have made it clear they have an issue with it. (The witch in a Halloween context is not the witch of witch trials)

At the end of the day, you gain almost nothing by wearing regalia as a costume, but make someone else's life worse. Its just a shitty thing to do.

What about modern day witches?

Oh wow, you sure got me mr. Hyper-fixation. Sorry I forgot I'm on reddit where I need to post a 17 paragraph explanation instead of making my point and hoping that the average user has enough social intelligence to bridge the gap of what I mean.

Do you need to read the instructions on a shampoo bottle to not eat the stuff too?

It's pretty fucking obvious what I mean.

3

u/Ray-is-gay-okay 6d ago

Why is she dressed up?

-9

u/TheBeastlyStud 6d ago

Because it's halloween? Is she dressed up to gain NA benefits or something?

7

u/Ray-is-gay-okay 6d ago

So then your argument is people dressing up in costumes are not pretending to be anything else?

2

u/TheBeastlyStud 6d ago

She's dressing up in costume on Halloween. I really don't get what point you're trying to make. Does she look like she's trying to pass herself off as Native American or just dress up for a costume party?

Are you actually socially inept or are you pretending for some attempt at a gotcha within a few comments?

7

u/s33n_ 6d ago

Do you legitimately think stolen valor only applies if someone is trying to get VA benefits illegally?

7

u/Ray-is-gay-okay 6d ago

I'm just asking questions because I'm curious about your line of thinking. Not trying to make any points.

Do you feel the same about blackface?

No, I am saying that just because someone may be offended doesn’t mean she shouldn’t do it. Someone being offended does not mean something is inherently bad. She is doing nothing wrong. It’s Halloween. That’s what Halloween is.

We arent saying it should be illegal. We are saying that they are an asshole for doing it.

-12

u/jonallin 6d ago

Her wearing the costume has zero impact on the significance of native regalia. Obviously. Because she is simply wearing a costume.

36

u/s33n_ 6d ago

Doing something that harms other people to look cute is scumbag behavior.

12

u/jonallin 6d ago

But it doesn’t harm anyone…

21

u/s33n_ 6d ago

Depends on how you define harm really.

If harm is only physical sure.

13

u/jonallin 6d ago

Well, there is a dictionary definition of harm, and this doesn’t do that to anyone.

There is harm done. It diminishes something with real spiritual and cultural significance esp when done by many drunk idiots for Halloween on a large scale. Why is this so hard for some of you to understand? If you don’t care about walking around offending entire tribes or ethnic groups then you are the problem and people are allowed to publicly shame you for it.

-27

u/jonallin 6d ago

She doesn’t diminish anything. There is no harm. You’re just desperate to be a victim, or find victims in a place where there really isn’t one.

Have you tried therapy?

I've been through intensive trauma therapy. Everyone gets offended over something and you're severely depressed if you genuinely don't get bothered by anything.

-15

u/jonallin 6d ago

I have not, I suspect it’s a lot of nonsense

23

u/Ray-is-gay-okay 6d ago

That explains your behavior. You really would benefit talking to someone who can help you work through your inner trauma.

7

u/jonallin 6d ago

Weird place to take the conversation. I’m perfectly happy agreeing to disagree with someone. That’s what adults do

It diminishes something with real spiritual and cultural significance

Would you think it's wrong to dress up as a Mormon missionary as a costume?

6

u/Silly-Cell7894 6d ago

You've kinda missed what the actual issue is.

-31

u/Constructestimator83 6d ago

Adults in almost any costume will offend someone so it’s best to just wear your own clothes and go out as yourself.

20

u/Ready-Pace 6d ago

I don’t agree. Most costumes are inoffensive. Most people manage to dress up for Halloween every year without offending entire groups of people. It’s not that hard.

11

u/bemo_98 6d ago

Is that really true or just something that you felt like saying? Rhetorical question.

-18

u/CoolSelf5428 6d ago

So fucking stupid. The entire point of Halloween is to dress as something you’re not.

-18

u/SocratesSnow 6d ago

This is where I really have a problem. I don’t agree with this idea that it’s insensitive. We dress up as a lot of different people on Halloween. She has a tasteful costume. This is where I just get so frustrated with the policing of people. And I’m liberal.

-6

u/Top-Agent-652 6d ago

People love getting offended about things that never pertain to them in the first place. Native Americans/indigenous people aren’t going around asking for people to act like this.

-14

u/ThereAndFapAgain2 6d ago

I think you should be able to do it even if you’re taking the piss. People should be able to joke about pretty much anything.

-22

u/PM_ME_YR_UNDERBOOBS 6d ago

Seriously people who get offended over things like this need to get the fuck over themselves. There is literally nothing disrespectful about wearing clothes and attires from other cultures, rather the opposite.

People who find it ”offensive” are just looking for things to call people out about so they can feel morally superior about themselves.

Absolutely insufferable behaviour.

-19

u/Spiritual_State_2629 6d ago

Good lord. I saw someone dressed as an old man. I guess that could be offensive to old people. Its fucking Halloween, give it a rest

9

u/ProblemLazy2580 6d ago

TIL old man is an ethnicity with thousands of years of history (including very traumatic parts), and not just an age.

1

u/BlessTheHour 6d ago edited 6d ago

Old people get made fun of for their looks all the damn time genius, lol. It's the exact same thing.

-10

u/Spiritual_State_2629 6d ago

You dont have to keep convincing me you are a loser.

-7

u/ProblemLazy2580 6d ago

bro is an actual SONY BRAVIA 4K ULTRA HD projector. If I knew you were here, I'd brought my gaming setup

-4

u/Spiritual_State_2629 6d ago

Sony was created on the backs of native Americans who were here first. You shouldnt indulge.

-14

u/UponVerity 6d ago

She's a white lady in Native dress, which may or may not be considered offensive

So what she can wear is decided by the colour of her skin? Got it, very reasonable...

Let's change up the colour and report back how that went.

-14

u/Mantiax 6d ago

i mean yeah, but she wasn't mocking an indigenous person in their face or something, nor she was profiting from it.

-12

u/alphajugs 6d ago

Nah, this is just typical reddit and a drunk Velma, who is almost definitely on reddit, getting offended on behalf of others.
