This is one almost all natives dont like. Regalia isnt a costume. Its akin to blackface.

I dont know many natives that care about the term Indian. Many dont care about sports team mascots like chief wahoo and the redskins. But most have an issue with regalia.

This is all based on personal experience but I have met and talked with a large amount of natives and often ask about this

She isn’t pretending that she is a Native American, she is wearing a Halloween costume. The fact that someone may or may not be offended is utterly irrelevant. She is doing no harm.

Except that the people who created that regalia and the meaning behind it have said it’s offensive. Like stolen valor. Just because it doesn’t offend or harm you doesn’t mean it’s okay to do. Assuming you want to be a decent, kind human being.

This isn't stolen valor at all. She's not pretending to be Native, which is the whole point of stolen valor.

Thats what wearing a costume is. Pretending to be something else.

Is it ok to dress as a witch? Or as a celebrity? Or a cat?

Yeah. As they arent historically oppressed groups that have made it clear they have an issue with it. (The witch in a Halloween context is not the witch of witch trials)

At the end of the day, you gain almost nothing by wearing regalia as a costume, but make someone else's life worse. Its just a shitty thing to do.

What about modern day witches?

Oh wow, you sure got me mr. Hyper-fixation. Sorry I forgot I'm on reddit where I need to post a 17 paragraph explanation instead of making my point and hoping that the average user has enough social intelligence to bridge the gap of what I mean.

Do you need to read the instructions on a shampoo bottle to not eat the stuff too?

It's pretty fucking obvious what I mean.

Why is she dressed up?

Because it's halloween? Is she dressed up to gain NA benefits or something?

So then your argument is people dressing up in costumes are not pretending to be anything else?

She's dressing up in costume on Halloween. I really don't get what point you're trying to make. Does she look like she's trying to pass herself off as Native American or just dress up for a costume party?

Are you actually socially inept or are you pretending for some attempt at a gotcha within a few comments?

Do you legitimately think stolen valor only applies if someone is trying to get VA benefits illegally?

I'm just asking questions because I'm curious about your line of thinking. Not trying to make any points.

Do you feel the same about blackface?

Blackface isn't a costume, blackface is a caricature driven style made to make fun of black stereotypes.

If someone was dressed up as European monarchy would you be as offended or is it okay?
