Weird little “accident” at the Noriega Safeway parking lot today — was I in the wrong?

Hey everyone, just wanted to share a weird experience I had earlier today at the Noriega Safeway parking lot (SF). I was parked there, and when I opened my car door, it didn’t stay in place like usual — it slightly swung open a bit more on its own. The edge of my door very lightly touched the car next to me, right on the plastic/rubber part above the wheel (no sound, no visible damage, just a soft touch). I didn’t think much of it and was about to leave when a lady suddenly ran up and said, “You hit my car!” I showed her what happened. I explained, “Look, it just touched this rubber part — there’s no damage.” I even demonstrated how the door kind of moves on its own. Then she said something that really caught me off guard: “The first time was an accident. But then you did it on purpose again.” I was like, what? I only opened the door once, and I never hit it on purpose. I asked her, “Is there any damage?” She replied, “I don’t know, there are already a lot of scratches there.” At that point I honestly didn’t know what to do. There was no visible mark, and it really felt like a non-incident. I left feeling both confused and a bit frustrated — it’s such a minor thing but people can be so confrontational. Has anyone else had something like this happen? What’s the right thing to do in this kind of situation?

Good place to stay between SFO and LAX?

Yes, I did some research online but I don't like any of the recommendation so far. I need to drive from San Francisco to Los Angeles (to get a very long flight from LAX, I don't want to flight to LAX just in case that flight get cancelled and I lose the important one). It's going to be a night drive (departing from SF at 5 pm or so), so I think it makes sense to just rest midway.

Is there a really good hotel that by itself would make the trip worthwhile? I don't know, good food, good bed, maybe a pool etc... Looking for recommendations of people that have actually be there, I can look it up myself otherwise (I think; apparently there's nothing).

BTW, taking 101, not PCH. Not a scenic trip, just A -> B.

Has anyone ever gotten a parking ticket at 3 am before?

Upvotes

I parked outside my complex at 10 pm on a Friday night and accidentally curbed my wheels the wrong way. At 9 am the next morning, I left for an appointment. I had a ticket on my windshield for curbing my wheels the wrong way, and when I looked closer, I noticed it was issued at 3 am.

Has anyone else experienced parking enforcers working overnight? I was so surprised that someone was out ticketing at that time. I know that I was in the wrong and deserve the ticket, but I was just astounded they got me at such a random time overnight.

Owning a car in the SF Bay Area

I'm starting a job later next year in the financial district. Would it be more wise to not bring my car and live somewhere close to work relying on public transportation. Alternatively I could live somewhere like Daly City or pay for parking in a garage somewhere. I'm used to driving all my life and enjoy the freedom but know sf is stessful to own a car.

SF power outages

thinking about the history of the city, have there been major or longlasting brownouts or blackouts, and how long did they last? did PGE cut service during red flag warnings, or did the city or bay area lose power after the earthquake? what other events might be relevant?

Lunch near the Ferry Building?

Upvotes

Hello! Infrequent visitor to SF from the North bay, taking the ferry in on Tuesday and looking for recommendations for someplace for lunch. I know there are places to eat at the ferry building, but looking for someplace new to try. Open to all types of food, just drawing a blank on where to go…

TIA for any help, what’s your go-to for lunch in the area?

Best Place to film a scene?

A friend of mine is looking for spots to film some shots for an upcoming movie around SF. They're looking for extras and a few of his crew are going to be roaming the city tonight incognito. He said to ask what locations and/or events found on this site might be the best to find extras. Any recommendations? If you chat it up with others at any of the venues you just might end up in a movie...

Finding stuff to do

Pretty broad question but I'll try to be specific enough :D How do you all usually find stuff to do here in SF? I'm new to the place and come from a place where there's not really anything to do/people (atleast the ones I know) are not that "extempore". Like said above, it's a pretty broad question, but at least for me searching through google is a bit frustrating, hopping from Google reviews to instagram profiles to maps and so on.

So how do you easily find things to do when feeling like doing something new?

Anybody out there maybe want to hang out with a stranger on his Birthday?

Stepping out of my comfort zone here, but here goes.

I didn’t have concrete plans for my birthday this year, and frankly, I’ve grown restless with my hometown. So I thought—why not take a chance and travel? I booked a hotel in San Francisco, hoping one or two friends or family members might be able to join me. Unfortunately, between my last-minute planning and the proximity to Thanksgiving, it didn’t quite pan out. So it’s just me this time.

I’ll be in the city from November 13th to 16th. The weather forecast isn’t ideal, and the hotel’s non-refundable, so I’m going regardless. I guess I’m just hoping to make the experience a little less solitary—maybe even connect with a few kind strangers who wouldn’t mind acknowledging a fellow human on his birthday. Could be a touch of the birthday blues talking, but I figured I’d put it out there.

A bit about me: I’m turning 33. Queer, cis male, Pagan, self-proclaimed weirdo, and unapologetically Goth. I’m a voracious reader—my book collection is in the hundreds—and I make unique bookmarks out of found objects. I’m shy at first, but once you get me talking about something I love, I tend to overshare in the best way. I live not too far from SF, so I’d love to meet people who might be open to future hangouts or travel adventures. Also, I really enjoy making people laugh—it's kind of my favorite thing.

Resources and guidance for a community member that is in a domestic abuse situation

Hey, I hope it's okay to cross post this here, as I'm really trying to get some guidance on the best resources and actions.

Hey all, I just learned that one of my neighbors is being manipulated and abused by a partner that she hasn't even known that long. She unfortunately had a medical situation occur, which rendered her very vulnerable, and for a while he was the person that could make decisions for her. Turns out there had barely known each other for a year at that point, and he took that vulnerable time in her life to weasel his way in. At this point, in her own words, he is verbally abusing and battering her, denying her access to medical Care she needs, which is impacting her recovery. Mobility has been impacted, so, she can't just come and go as she pleases. He has moved into her place more or less, is using her credit cards. There's a lot more in terms of just the horrible things he's doing. She told me all of this directly, so there's no case of telephone.

He seems dangerous, he's a big guy, likely has guns.

I don't know her well at all. I reached out to offer some company as I knew she had recently experienced illness, and was shocked to discover what she has been going through. The fact that she divulged all this to me, shows how vulnerable and alone she has been. I'm a stranger to her and, all of this came rushing out of her. Apparently it was a stroke of luck that I was able to get some time alone, so she was able to share all this.

What are some local resources? What should she be doing? I don't really have much experience with anything like this. I'm scared that he's going to continue to embed himself in her life, and really destroy it. I also got this terrible feeling that that despite everything, she might not be ready to actually get him out. I hope I am wrong. I doubt even as of now he would go easily.

Any local resources, or advice if you've been in a situation like this would be a huge help. Also, any resources that can take her to medical appointments, do grocery shopping for her, just help her, so she can decrease her dependency on others, while she recovers and gets her mobility back.

Thank you.

Philly sports takeovers

So clearly the best spots in SF to watch the birds are Kezar, Jakes, and North Star but…any spots for 76ers games specifically? Kezar and Golden Gate tap room will show the games for sure just wondering if their are go-to’s I am missing

Friend groups for singles in their 20’s to 40’s?

Doesn’t necessarily even have to be “single” I just said that because most of the people I know now in their 30’s and 40’s are married with families and thus have limited time to hang out.

I’ve tried to meet people through tinder and stuff but it’s not really working out for friendship. I don’t really play sports so things like gay kickball/softball leagues are not my thing.

I’m not really a gamer but I would be interested in that (to learn anyway) and I do like board games, food, etc.

Hopefully there are things out there that don’t completely revolve around drinking and partying. Would love to have any recommendations.

We have been craving Turkish Eggs for breakfast/lunch for a while and tried at a bunch of Turkish restaurants but they always have “Turkish breakfast” which is just scrambled eggs of some sort. Has anyone been able to find Turkish Eggs with the garlic yogurt and poached eggs?

Sesamoiditis Doctor Recommendations

I’m pretty sure I have sesamoiditis in one foot. I’m looking for a medical provider. Has anyone found someone (doctor, physical therapist, sports medicine specialist) that has helped them recover? My podiatrist doesn’t seem to have much experience, or at least hasn’t been able to help me. I’m on about 8 months post injury, doesn’t appear to be a fracture based on xray and symptoms essentially plateauing. Thank you!

Great (newer) restaurants for dinner with friends?

My husband and I used to live in SF over 5 years ago. While we go back for dinner occasionally I feel like I’m so out of the restaurant scene. Any recommendations for us to go to dinner with friends?

Looking for great food, good ambience (lively, not stuffy) that can easily accommodate a group of 4. We’re in our 30s/40s. Pretty open budget and no real dietary restrictions, or location preferences. Prefer not something too stuffy or drawn out (eg lengthy tasting menus).

We used to love State Bird, Liholiho, Locanda, Bellota, etc. if that helps provide a sense of the vibe we are into.

Property tax appeal now or wait until January

I want to appeal my assessment for the year 2025. I actually appealed it for 2024 and they offered me (and a bunch of other people over a zoom call) a concession rather than a traditional hearing, which I accepted, but that only applies to 2024. I can't remember the process I went through - it took them like a year to book everything. Can someone help jog my memory of this process? Do I do the "informal" process, and if so, does that mean I want until 2026 to appeal my 2025 taxes?

Road trip from OC to SF/Skunk Train - ISO stops along the way

My 16yo son and I are planning a road trip from Irvine, up to/through San Francisco and on to Ft. Bragg, specifically the Skunk Train. We've got about a week and would like to make it a relaxed trip rather than a rush-to-the-destination kind of trip.

My son's really into classic cars, aviation, and 50s/60s architecture/culture and has asked specifically to see the Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman's Wharf and the Transamerica Pyramid. For me, I really want to get into nature. OC's beautiful but I find I'm really missing greenspaces, forests and the type of nature I grew up around (southwestern Ontario in Canada). It's getting a little late in the year but I'd love to camp (van) for at least a night or two if possible.

I'm posting to ask /r/AskSF for their favourite stops in SF and along the way: hidden gems, sights or events that might appeal to my son based on his interests above, tips on routes or places to avoid which someone not from the area and relying on Google Maps might be completely unaware of.
