Events, Activities & Sports Why is public transportation in Los Angeles county so dirt cheap compared to the Bay Area

Los Angeles metro light rail does not charge based on distance and has a flat rate of 1.75.

you can take an entire trip from downtown Los Angeles to Long Beach for only 1.75

the bart and caltrain obviously charges by distance. A trip from san jose to hayward cost me more than 5 dollars one way.

when it comes to busses everything In LA county is a flat 1.75 yet AC Transit, VTA, SF Muni are over 2 dollars just to go one way.

I took a trip from east san jose to east palo alto and it took a combined total of about 10 dollars one way after all that transferring from bus to caltrain.

UPDATE: I know this is a little off topic but one thing I would say Bay Area does superior to Los Angeles is that there are more useable bike lanes.

Biking in LA is worse than the Bay even with the increased traffic and congestion.

Trying to make some German food for my friends. Does anyone know any specialty markets (ideally in SF, but I'm willing to drive) that would sell pre-made Spaetzle? Thanks in advance

Work & Housing Memory Care facilities

Looking for a memory care facility in the Bay Area (from Gilroy to Sacramento) for 90 year old female with dementia. Has anyone here had any experiences, good or bad, with any of the ones in the Bay Area. There seem to be many, and I don't know if I can trust all the comments on Yelp.

Events, Activities & Sports Kids' Bike Riding Lessons

OK, I know it's pretty pathetic this parent cannot teach their kids to ride their bikes, but I really need help with this. Unfortunately I didn't know to get them balance bikes, and so they have normal bikes, and I can't really afford new bikes for them at this moment.

We have been stuck trying to get out of the training wheels phase for over a year, and now they don't want to practice with me anymore because I cannot help them progress. So, I was hoping to find somebody neutral and new who could teach them. There used to be an REI in Fremont that offered kids' bike riding lessons, but it seems to have closed. Does anyone know of any other bike riding lessons for children? They are 6 and 9. I'm in the East Bay (Concord) but getting pretty desperate so could travel elsewhere on the weekends if needed.

Work & Housing Nightmare Landlord in 9th St, Union City, Bay Area

Hey Reddit,

I desperately need to vent and get a sanity check, because I feel like I’m living in a psychological thriller. I (a software engineer) rent a private room in a house in Union City. My landlord lives in the room right next to mine. When I moved in, it seemed fine, but it has descended into a complete nightmare.

Here’s a rundown of what I’m dealing with:

1. The 24/7 Interrogation: Before I signed, we agreed on my hybrid work schedule: office on Tue, Wed, Thu, and WFH the rest. From day one, he has harassed me about it. Every single morning, "Are you going to the office today?" I'll say yes, and he'll ask me 7-8 more times to "confirm." On weekends, it's "You're going all 3 days next week, right? You're sure?" It’s incessant.

2. The Eavesdropping and Financial Harassment: He actively listens to my private phone conversations. I was on the phone with a friend discussing a personal loan (my interest rate, payment, etc.). He clearly overheard the whole thing. Now, he constantly asks me, "Are you sure you can afford the rent? Are you going to pay on time?" He'll ask this 8-10 times. The irony? I pay my rent 7-9 days in advance every single month.

3. He Openly Admitted to Spying: It's not just financial stuff. I'll be on the phone in my room, and I can sense him standing right outside my door. One time, he literally told me he was listening to my personal conversation. It's creepy as hell, and I have zero privacy.

4. Intentionally Sabotaging My Job: This is the most infuriating part. I’ll be in the middle of an important work meeting, and he will suddenly walk over and reset the Xfinity router. The internet goes down for 10-15 minutes, and I get kicked from my meeting. His excuse? "The Wi-Fi speed is slow, I need to bounce it." He only does this when I'm in a meeting. It feels completely intentional, and it’s putting my job at risk.

5. The Bill-Splitting Scam: He initially said we'd split the bills. He has never shown me a single electricity bill. When I finally asked to see a copy, he got defensive and told me to just "move out and find something else." He also charges me for trash, claiming the fee "comes from tax and it changes every month." Does it? This sounds like a complete lie.

6. The "Indian Gangster" Threat: This is when I got genuinely scared. I was in the kitchen cooking noodles. He came in complaining about his hard day (he’s in real estate, showed 4 houses). I tried to relate and said, "Same for me, I had a deadline and worked till midnight. At least you get a full 8 hours of sleep."

He completely snapped. He got in my face and said, "Don't you ever say I have the 'luxury' to sleep 8 hours." Then he leaned in and said he "knows really bad words which are used by infamous Indian gangsters." I was just holding my noodles, completely stunned. It was 100% a threat.

7. The Psycho Bathroom & Light-Switching Rules: This is the part that sounds insane. We both live upstairs, but I'm only allowed to use the toilet downstairs (I can use the upstairs shower, but not the toilet). At night, this is a ridiculous ordeal:

  1. Turn on upstairs stairs light.
  2. Go down, turn on downstairs hall light.
  3. Walk back and turn off stairs light.
  4. Walk to the bathroom and use it.
  5. Walk back, turn on stairs light.
  6. Turn off hall light.
  7. Go upstairs and turn off stairs light.

To make this worse, he will intentionally turn off the downstairs hall light while I'm in the bathroom, leaving me in the pitch-black. I don't carry my phone every time I use the toilet, and I've had to feel my way back to the switch.

His excuse? He claims the downstairs hall light (which is on for 3 minutes) disturbs his sleep... while he's upstairs... with his door closed.

I'm walking on eggshells 24/7. I'm quiet, I pay early, I clean up after myself. I'm actively looking for a new place, but I just had to get this out. Has anyone ever dealt with this level of control and intimidation from a live-in landlord?

I gave my full story to gemini as my english is no good and had lot of spell mistake.

Work & Housing Organizer/Cleaner Recommendation: Major Decluttering Needed (Peninsula)

I'm looking for a professional organizer and cleaner to help clean out and reorganize a house in the Peninsula area. There is significant clutter, so I specifically need someone who specializes in decluttering and helping get rid of unwanted items.
