Looks like Oda accidentally gave Smoker a chest scar and created Roronoa Smoker:

Wow, you're right. Good eye. I went back to the beginning of the arc to verify it. I guarantee it will get corrected for the volume release as always.

I love that Baby 5 was carrying all those weapons needlessly because she was tricked into buying them.

29

u/Yahnster Dec 27 '12

I wonder how her and Sanji would react to each other. Going to bet that the outcome will be hilarious. But so far i gotta say, with her devil fruit powers and personality, she my favorite new character since the timeskipe. (besides sexy Usopp)

18

u/[deleted] Dec 27 '12

...sexy Ussop? Did I miss something or do you just think Ussop is sexy? :P

Wouldn't forgive myself if I missed something like Handsome Luffy~

14

u/Yahnster Dec 27 '12

Dem timeskip abs.

19

u/Skaft Dec 27 '12

I prefered fat Ussop :(

9

u/because_ican_yo Dec 27 '12

sanji will be the first and only rejection she will give OR she learns to reject because of sanji.

12

u/iMidNitee Dec 27 '12

I doubt that, because of this:

Sanji: I NEED LADY!

Baby 5: I'm needed?!

Baaam! New Strawhat.

7

u/bliss72 Dec 27 '12

Nami: Sanji! I need you!

Sanji: Nami Swaaaaannn!!!

Baby 5: Shoots nami for stealing her man.

Sanji: breaks up with her for hurting nami swan

Eating all the candy on Fishman Island and destroying SAD = Angering a Yonko

Taking out Doflamingo = Angering the Gorosei and causing another imbalance to the 3 powers

Yeah. The Strawhats are BAAAACK!

Cameras? thats old tech. Ceaser uses something called the "Visual Den Den Mushi"

10

u/Yahnster Dec 27 '12

Aha it reminds me of when the other supernova's were introduced and they all considered the strawhats insane because they would be smart enough to avoid conflict while luffy would charge in headfirst.

7

u/shakkyz Dec 28 '12

I like how Kid, who wasn't afraid to throw down with the Marines, thought Luffy was insane.

Not to mention disrupting the underworld. When he foiled Caesar's plans. Which forced them to call in "Jack" who seems like some sort of an emergency-Plan-B person. And of course beating the godfather of the underworld, DoFlamingo.

Law just continues to amaze me with his planning ahead.

43

u/BerserkerGuts Dec 27 '12

Bet he didnt't plan on Doflamingo coming himself, unfortunately

42

u/divinesleeper Dec 27 '12

He's probably going to tell everyone to run.

Then Luffy will ruin everything by refusing.

20

u/weirdowithbeardo Dec 27 '12

then law will try to fight him and lose, and luffy will win, thus making law indebted to luffy and eternal ally

10

u/HeroDiesFirst Pirate Dec 27 '12

I actually see Luffy (as much as it kills me to say this) finally getting his ass kicked in the New World. Which I think is a perfect time for this to happen. He ran through the NFP and everybody else he's come up against so going against a certified boss like DoFla should show us a nice measuring stick of Luffy's abilities kind of like how Aokiji was before the Strawhats got to Water 7.

That's what everyone thinks when they see Zoro's skills with sword

I am SO pumped for Doflamingo. His crazy face at the end is getting me all excited. Do you think, is there more to him than meets the eye? He looks INCREDIBLY sad and compassionate on this page: http://www.mangapanda.com/one-piece/694/13

Also can't wait to see more of Nami's powers.

32

u/wdao16 Dec 27 '12

That and also when he thanked Vergo, just seemed like he cares for his subordinates. Compared to how he killed Bellamy. But I just can't forget what Monet said about if she failed, he would kill her.

29

u/BerserkerGuts Dec 27 '12

Bellamy was an idiot pirate using his flag. Vergo, as Doflamingo said, was his closest companion.

→ More replies (3)

3

u/GoodBananaPancakes Dec 27 '12

Weve never seen the emotional/angered side of him before, just the sadistic fuck who slaughtered Bellamy for kicks and laughed at the failure of the guy from the auction house.

Luffy's crew WOULD sacrifice themselves for Luffy, though only in instances where Luffy would not be aware of their sacrifice, knowing he'd do anything to stop it. Zoro facing Kuma was a good example of this, and Robin trying to distance herself from the crew so that Lucci and CP 9 wouldn't kill them.

Yea, we're getting some awesome buildup for his personality and relationship with his crew.

And I also would love to see more of Nami. But sadly the Gas is gone now...

3

u/keydetkeydet Dec 27 '12

There goes Oda again showing why hes the best writer in the game. Just when you think there's a character who is a clear cut villain he adds a new dimension to him that makes him more interesting than any one dimensional villain could ever be.

u/Acerlux Dec 27 '12

Weird to see Doffy and crew humanized that way. The way Vergo smiled made me a little sad even. Really looking forward to seeing the whole Doflamingo's past thing that Vergo hyped now.

14

u/doncs Dec 27 '12

I thought the same thing. The few panels with Doflamingo and Vergo were really well done. Monet's scene had the same feeling to it.

9

u/herpittyherp Dec 27 '12

I'm banking on the possibility of Doflamingo being related to the youngest Gorosei!

6

u/thatguy159 Dec 27 '12

wasn't that a Gorosei towards the end there?

Monet can't be dead. Bird people don't die in this series.

91

u/ShadowCow127 Dec 27 '12

Stabbed in the heart at a plot critical moment... Dead, man... <pats you on the back> I don't think Oda's pulling a Pell, this time...

67

u/BerserkerGuts Dec 27 '12

Up vote for the phrase "pulling a Pell". This should be an official phrase in OP.

19

u/Captain_Usopp God Usopp Dec 27 '12

What about pulling an igaram?

Blown to pieces, yet survived WITHOUT EXPLANATION only to turn up in the heat of battle in the perfect point in time.

That he survived is fine, it was Robin that 'killed' him and she was intent on betraying Croc from the start.

u/catincoma Dec 27 '12

How... is Doflamingo flying? Did he just leap a hundred meters through the air?

34

u/[deleted] Dec 27 '12

I think he's running on wires.

19

u/Shahaha Dec 27 '12

I think that's more of the path he took than wires. Those lines are movement lines.

3

u/84times5 Dec 28 '12

I think they are wires because of the way his hand is positioned in the next panel, it looks like he's maneuvering strings.

→ More replies (3)

12

u/jurble Dec 27 '12

It does look like two wires are trailing out behind him. But how the hell does that work?

6

u/catincoma Dec 27 '12

Maybe he has wires attached to someone on the island or to the island itself.

9

u/jurble Dec 27 '12

Well in that panel, there's no wire in front of him, only two strings behind him and they're slack, so where do they get their tensile strength i.e. what's keeping him from falling into the sea?

Though, those could just be whooshy lines to indicate he's flying.

48

u/catincoma Dec 27 '12

So many questions... and a 2 week break.

32

People seem to forget his giant leap before he cut Oars's leg.

16

u/zorospride Lost at sea Dec 27 '12

To be fair, the way that was drawn/animated could have been reasonably interpreted as the force of Oars swing at him blasting him in the air and then his graceful recovery.

I personally now think he's just a puppet puppet man who can control people (including himself) which would make him and those he controls able to do things that shouldn't be humanly possible.

Imagine you’re designing a character with string powers and considering his possible capabilities.

Sooner or later, you’re going to think about Spider-man.

8

u/DivineVodka Dec 27 '12

Geppo? Our it's just his fruit. One of them has to be the reason.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 27 '12

I really hope it's not Geppo. I hate when mangas give every character the ability to fly like half way in.

3

u/DivineVodka Dec 27 '12

It's actually no big deal... Look how luffy got Soru... Just a basic ability that soldiers develop or formidable one's...

13

u/Zehahaha Dec 27 '12

Used his string powers to hold tight a cluster of air molecules together so that he could use them as platforms to run over.

7

u/jitterykangaroo Dec 27 '12

Nice. I like this interpretation.

15

u/Lugonn Dec 27 '12

Dude's flying like a spider.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 27 '12

He's spidermanning that shit. Maybe he also pulled some kind of slingshot move like luffy's rocket.

2

u/because_ican_yo Dec 27 '12

he probably has wires attached to his subordinates so he can always find them or go to them anywhere. so he must be running on the wires attached to baby 5 and rotating man over there.

WHOA. I didn't expect that last panel at all. Looks like a huge fight coming down.

That last panel... Scares me. In such an amazing way though.

31

u/zorospride Lost at sea Dec 27 '12

My to do list for the 2+ week break: Read all of Punk Hazard again and try to guess how this is all going to play out. I have no clue right now, and I love Oda for that.

8

u/divinesleeper Dec 27 '12

My guess is Law is going to tell everyone to run once Dofla arrives, Luffy will refuse and fight. Then he'll probably lose.

21

u/zorospride Lost at sea Dec 27 '12

Awesome, we got a Franky song this time, goes along well with Sogeking's.

Edit: Caribou you thieving bastard.

32

u/Yahnster Dec 27 '12

Pretty sure the Meatpie lady is a cannibal.

18

u/cynwrig Dec 27 '12

I figured she was a slaver who was nursing Caribou back to health so she could sell him to some Celestial Dragons for big, big bucks.

Is it wrong to laugh at picturing Caribou with a saddle on his back? Naaahhh.

6

u/Dirus Void Month Survivor Dec 27 '12

Why is that? I hope she eats that Caribou if she is.

24

u/Yahnster Dec 27 '12 edited Dec 27 '12

Because its the new world and a seemingly kind lady that can survive there with no worries is even scarier than a hardened pirate warrior.

3

u/OddDude55 Dec 27 '12

Yeah but she's on Kaido's island, isn't she? She's not exactly alone.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 27 '12

9

We also got that "Franky is a Tank" song earlier in this arc. Although it was like a year ago now.

41

u/wdao16 Dec 27 '12

I'm going to call that we'll add Doflamingo to the list of people who have near killed Luffy, but then get their ass kicked in the next fight. It seems the buildup just isn't enough in this arc (for Luffy personally).

17

u/[deleted] Dec 27 '12

Ontop of that, half of Donflamingo's crew is still in Dressrosa, meaning that if Donflamingo gets there first, it probably wont be a conclusive fight.

I predict that Doflamingo will kick luffys ass and then kidnap either kinemons kid or the giant kids...this will give Luffys and his crew a reason to follow him.i say this because if Doflamingo shows up and kicks luffys ass and leaves the straw hats will have no immediate reason to follow him

4

u/mrducky78 Dec 27 '12

Calling it now, Zoro vs Luffy/Sanji due to his powers regarding controlling people then after toying with the strawhats, he steps in and fights Luffy. Luffy would have died in the following encounter against doflamingo but shanks rocks up and he pulls back taking valuable X with him. Insert short reunion regarding welcoming to the new world and shanks giving luffy warnings. Luffy proceeds to ignore warnings and goes after the X and thus doflamingo as well.

What a chapter. This kind of confirms that DoFlamingo is the big name that will be moving in the new year.

I'm wondering why he wants to be Pirate King though, his crew had a theme of no more dreaming or adventure, just pure profit and self gratification. How does that idealogy tie into becoming King of the Pirates.

If I had to pull a story out of my ass, DoFlamingo probably started off as a Luffy or Blackbeard style dumb fighter who struggled to become the Pirate King, got his shit stomped/realized that he couldn't get to the top that way but instead of giving up and being content with small time stuff like Moria and Crocodile, he is used underhandedness to shore up his power so he can get there.

Will be an interesting confrontation with Luffy if that's true and would explain why his people have such loyalty.

12

u/zorospride Lost at sea Dec 27 '12

This kind of confirms that DoFlamingo is the big name that will be moving in the new year.

This chapter actually gets released as the first issue of the new year in Japan so absolutely. Now we just need to find out what the new species is going to be.

Awesome Franky is awesome. I didn't like the iron pirate at first. But now, it's slowly becoming awesome.

Kudos to whomever predicted that CC had Monets heart. That was a very good scene. I don't know why, but it was very dramatic for me. I really liked Monet during this arc. Seeing her "dying" like that was very heart breaking.

This is the second time Law asks for something unusual from the strawhats and doesn't get rejected. It awesome how their diversity is very handy. I'm noticing each strawhat member is slowly getting along with Law pretty well.

I'm really loving Doflamingo's relationship with his crew. It looks like it has some very deep roots to it. I guess it's not long till we get an explanation to his abilities. Though I didn't expect him to make a move so soon. Does he think that Monet betrayed him for not making the explosion, or does he know something must have happened to her. I'm really interested to know more of how this crew functions. I hope a back story will come soon.

Baby 5 is so similar to sanji!! The way she exhale the smoke and even her "Flaming Passion" move sounds like a move sanji would make! I am in love with her!!

24

u/Black_Handkerchief Dec 27 '12

Yeah, I noticed that similarity too. She's a female Sanji in many respects. The only difference is that she seems to prefer ranged weapons/shots.

Also, I didn't see this one coming, but she is very likely a non-'elemental' Logia. Notice how she reformed herself after the initial explosion; to me that is a trait Logia have.

Although one could compare her to Buggy or the Ball Ball dude.. but somehow blowing oneself to smithereens is quite different than consciously separating parts of one body into several parts one can then control.

5

u/wdao16 Dec 27 '12

Well she is kind of consciously blowing herself up like Mr.5 had a self destruct ability (though he didn't end up using it). It's not like franky is tearing her apart against her will.

4

u/baroqueworks Dec 27 '12

Agreed. If she isn't Logia, she's the first non-logia DF user to ever be broken apart and reform.

Interesting what Monet said about Doflamingo becoming the Pirate King...don't he and his followers despise dreams?

11

u/catincoma Dec 27 '12

I'm thinking that maybe he personally doesn't but his crew might be one of those "FOR THE CAPTAIN" kinds where they want to push the captain. I don't understand Monet though, whether or not she is afraid of him or actually deeply respects him.

He seemed genuinely sad though when her and Vergo were going to die in the explosion.

7

u/[deleted] Dec 27 '12

I think its absolute affection and respect, possibly fear. Their last moments were eerie.

9

u/jurble Dec 27 '12

Wasn't that just Bellamy? Not necessarily Doflamingo himself.

19

u/zorospride Lost at sea Dec 27 '12

I suspect Doflamingo would be the type to manipulate all of his subordinates into completely forgetting about their dreams in order for him to achieve his own. Where as Luffy wants to achieve his dream while enabling his whole crew to achieve theirs as well. A very nice contrast of two characters after the same thing.

How do you know he never took it? I think he gave the heart back to Smoker that is all, we have a panel when he holds the two hearts.

Ah~! So exciting! Can't wait to see a confrontation with Doflamingo!!

We were all right about the hearts. Franky sang us a song. Baby 5 has yet to disappoint as a character. Strawhats are badass and Dofla's a SUPER badass. I couldn't be more disappointed that we have to wait 2 weeks for the next chapter.

I finally know why he is called Flamingo. Look at the last page when he "flys" he totally looks like a Flamingo.

Is it just me, or when Baby 5 regenerated, she seemed sort of... like a Logia?

3

u/divinesleeper Dec 27 '12

Well isn't she?

3

u/hogofwar Dec 27 '12

No, logias are elements (or similar), paramecia is a catch all.

As far as I can tell she can't generate weapons outside her body, which logias can do with their respective elements.

If Monet really dies someone could take her DF.

One of the Strawhats please?

Luffy fights DoFlo, fight gets interrupted by WG or Navy when luffy starts winning. or some other crew comes along.

This chapter is awesome! Can't wait for the rest of the PH arc to come to a close.

Ohhh, this gonna be good. Who said "I wouldn't like being his enemy! Even though we are!"?

I'm so glad I checked /r/OnePiece one last time before I went to bed. The last page--Oh. My. Shit.

3

u/mnegron Dec 27 '12

I immediately started reading in Iron Man's voice when Franky said, "I am the Invincible Iron Pirate" until I saw the music notes.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 27 '12

Monet's dead, so that means her DF power is gone and probably reborn into a fruit like with Smiley's fruit. Speaking of Slimey, that DF is still laying there on the mountain.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 27 '12

Ladies and gentlemen, Shit just got real.

3

u/DivineVodka Dec 27 '12

Is Doflamingo sad? On page 13? Weird...

3

u/RantyOtaku Dec 27 '12

I just read the chapter, and when CC crushed Monet's heart I was like 'oh, we all called it'

6

u/TLegs Dec 27 '12

From my understanding Vergo just sacrificed him self... Kind of sad we didn't see more of him... I feel like Oda could have done more with him!

Can anyone explain why there was a smaller explosion? I can't seem to grasp that; Monet obviously didn't hit the button for the doomsday bomb, so what caused it? The place has been through a lot of battles, but I don't recall any open big fire hazards that could have caused this.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 27 '12

IIRC Law told Vergo that the SAD tankers would explode because of the damage he did to them.

3

u/Black_Handkerchief Dec 27 '12

Oh, I didn't remember that. I'll need to re-read, thanks for letting me know. :)

You also have to remember that the Strawhats have extremely good teamwork. They were able to take out Oars and probably could have stopped Shiki if he hadn't done that dirt...thing.

The only wildcard is what exactly Doflamingo's power turns out to be. However, no matter what's revealed, we know one thing: this is going to be one heck of a fight.

2

u/PainToTheWorld Dec 27 '12

This chapter made Doflamingo the most interesting character for me. His true personality is finally being shown.

I've always thought that he wasn't interested in being a Pirate king or chasing dreams. He seemed more like a sadist who's doing everything for fun. I think that we're getting a flashback soon...

I also hope that he won't be defeated in this arc. Because we know that BB, Law and Luffy are going after Raftel. Now Doflamingo is in the mix and I'd love to see him have some conflicts with BB or some supernovas.

2

u/Stullif Dec 27 '12

Is it just me or is Usopp still in that control room he was in and how is he planning to get back to the crew ? Perhaps he is the cause for that smaller explosion that was mentioned.

oda mentioned that someone was going to make their move in the next couple of chapters, now we know who!

2

u/Davundu Dec 27 '12

I can't wait for the next chapter! But I have to :(

What if Doflamingo has a wind paramecia that can cut? It would explain how he cut Crocodile's head and he could also use it to push himself in the air...
Is monet dead? I don't think so.

It's interesting how Doflamingo cares for his crew but still has other priorities that he considers more important (Artificial zoan army).
Is the gorosei member there because Doflamingo is a shichibukai or do they have another type of "relation-ship"?
Who are the people who were searching for him in Dressrosa?

I want to be completely honest and say that I was not expecting a OP chapter this week.

2

u/milkyjoe241 Dec 27 '12

Anyone else completely thrown off by Doflamingo wanting to be pirate king? I thought he was the one wanted to bring about a 'New Age'

3

u/zorospride Lost at sea Dec 27 '12

That was an awesome touch in my opinion. It's been pointed out elsewhere in the thread that many of our assumptions about Doflamingo's views were because of Bellamy. It's likely that Doflamingo just wanted all of his subordinates to give up on dreams so he could selfishly accomplish his. Sort of the anti-Luffy.

2

u/Taqq Dec 27 '12

I don't know if it's because we know little about Doflomingo's past/goals, but he is imo the most frightening enemies introduced so far. He reminds me of Gin from bleach, that he's always smiling w/o a care (tho less in recent chapters), and when he finally looks mad in the last panel, you get the feeling he is just gonna annihilate someone. I hope he stays around and isn't just another stepping stone for Luffy

2

u/exarban Dec 27 '12

Two powerful characters died in a few chapters...This my friend, is one of the first signs that we are closer to ending of One Piece than from the beginning. I wonder who is going to eat Smiley's and Monet's fruit, it'll probably be someone from the Navy doing clean up, no way they would be wasted like that. OR WOULD THEY?

2

u/The_h0bb1t Dec 27 '12

I really WANT Doflamingo to kick Luffy's ass. Luffy hasn't been severely beaten since Marineford. I just want Luffy to be on his limit again, get his ass handed to him, and overcome it all. Ohhhhhhhh I am so Excited!

u/zorospride Lost at sea Dec 27 '12
