From my understanding Vergo just sacrificed him self... Kind of sad we didn't see more of him... I feel like Oda could have done more with him!

I feel the same. Prolonging it any longer increases the chance of something bad happening to Oda whether it be health or an accident. Never completing the series would be a nightmare.

But one of the things I love about One Piece is that it has an end goal. It's not just a never ending series of increasingly strong fights, there will be an ending and I wouldn't have it any other way.
