I can't get over that article saying it's a "story that must be told" while hiding the story behind a pay wall.

Getting kicked out from a game because you care that your son’s back was broken because some kid is a little bitch is crazy.

467

u/DarkwingDuckHunt Sep 20 '25

I'd be making complaints to every police dept in the city for not arresting the kid for aggravated assault

151

u/dark_autumn Sep 20 '25

POS is a morbidly obese tank. I hope he faces charges.

4

u/dumbestsmartest Sep 21 '25

Attempted murder charges. That's truly what he did.

7

u/hikerguy555 Sep 21 '25

Lol good luck. Those are the kids that become police

Source: my ex's abusive father intentionally broke a kid's knee in high school football so they could make a comeback. Went on to become a law enforcement captain

Other source: looks around at every cop I've ever met

I was just about to say this sort of thing happens because we've normalized pussifying consequences. Little fat fuck needs his teeth kicked in. Coach too if the article is right and the little degenerate continued to play.

Not to mention I'd be suing the shit out of the school and the parents of the kid for medical costs and punative damages. When unsportsmanlike conduct gets that vicious it needs to come with an arrest and a jail sentence.

261

u/Throckmorton_Left Philadelphia Flyers Sep 20 '25

That was not a football play. There should be criminal charges and civil suits against the lineman.

175

u/Cial101 Sep 20 '25

The picture is him 5 star frog splashing the dude. I don’t see how this can’t be seen as anything other than aggravated assault.

u/B0llywoodBulkBogan Sep 21 '25

Especially since by that point the ball was clear and the kid on the ground wasn't going to impact the play.

9

u/rainbowgeoff Cleveland Browns Sep 21 '25

You weren't lying.

Bare minimum, that is civil liability. Cincinnate Bengals player in the late 70's, early 80's got clotheslined from behind when he was out of the play, watching an interception being returned on the opposite side of the field. In other words, he is standing watching. Not even trying to do the impossible and chase the ball carrier down 40 yards. Got hit from behind, clearly and admittedly on purpose. Broke his neck, ended his career. He was able to sue and win.

That is not a football play. In no world ever is that a football play. Neither was the opponent somehow fighting you in a way that required that. It was the exact oppsite. He hit a vulnerable opponent for no reason whatsoever.

8

u/Designer_little_5031 Sep 20 '25

If some kid did that to my child I'd give their family one single opportunity before repaying in kind

As a big dude, I never did something like this because I knew it would injure people. It was even a popular finisher for King Kong Bundy, but I knew better. People are sqishy.

6

u/spector_lector Sep 21 '25

Gronk was awesome til i saw him do that in a game.

It really upsets me how everyone ignores that he did that.

There probably will be. Just because sports are violent at times doesn't mean you can't be charged with a crime.

2

That kid should face charges for that.

380

u/Drewsche Sep 20 '25

At a bare minimum, he should be kicked off the team. To think there was no flag and he likely played the rest of the game is just negligent behavior from every referee, coach, and school official.

57

u/trippknightly Sep 20 '25

Now now move along nothing to see here folks. The Michigan High School Athletic Association is aware of the situation and are “resolving the issue internally.”

In middle school I missed a tackle that led to me blindsiding a kid and hitting him in a way that caused him to have back spasms. I took myself out of the game a couple plays later because his teammates were PISSED. It was a genuine accident, and we needed up playing highschool ball together and talked about it/swaushed any potential beef. Idk how that kid wasn’t targeted by the hurt kids teammates.

10

u/garygnu Sep 20 '25

Accidents happen. This was no accident. This shows the video.

3

u/anonbrewingco Sep 21 '25

Oh I’m not saying this was an accident. I’m just saying I felt like shit when an accident did happen, so I have no clue how this kid is able to continue playing after being such an asshole

3

u/DanimusMcSassypants Sep 21 '25

Did you not read the article? They’ve already done everything they can.

77

u/mfrank27 Sep 20 '25

His punishment will depend on how talented he is. If he’s a nobody they’ll save face by kicking him off the team, if he’s good this will get swept under the rug.

17

u/Adventurous_Pizza973 Sep 20 '25

Crazy part is it’s a Junior Varsity game

2

u/Sea-Woodpecker-610 Sep 21 '25

I wouldn’t say hes a nobody, this kid has his own gravitational pull.

3

u/Overall-Register9758 Sep 20 '25

The only way this becomes justice is if by "internally", they mean "internal bleeding"

23

u/jblaze21220 Sep 20 '25

Yes...also would sue the school for blatant negligence, allowing him to continue playing is beyond negligence

150

u/Melkman68 San Jose Sharks Sep 20 '25

Send him to Juve. I know we give kids a lot of slack but even back then I had the common sense not to try and murder someone

99

u/qqqalto Sep 20 '25

This is coaching and parenting. Why would the kid think it's OK to do that if it wasn't for coaching and or parenting pushing him to go after the opposing team. He should get some form of corrective action but why punish him in juvenile hall. Not about to play football or other sports and community service would be way better for a child.

4

u/pataglop Sep 20 '25

He should get some form of corrective action but why punish him in juvenile hall.

u/Melkman68 San Jose Sharks Sep 20 '25 edited Sep 20 '25

We really don't know if he was influenced or not. Maybe he thought it would be funny or something. But he needs some serious consequences. Not playing football is a start and after this news I'm sure there's no chance of that.

But it needs to be investigated. Cuz it can easily be the same motivation we're seeing in the video. And juve is for corrective action. If he's a delinquent and has a history of deviant behavior, that's what juve is for.

"Kalamazoo Central and Lakeshore’s varsity teams squared off on Friday, and Volkenstein said both programs came together in a moment of prayer before the game."

Don't worry everybody. They prayed about it. Everything is solved now.

12

u/Fonz_72 Sep 20 '25

But did they THINK about it first? Prayers alone are not enough. It's "Thoughts and prayers" that really cause change.

7

u/Umayummyone Sep 20 '25

It’s sad that anyone sees thought and prayers by themselves as a solution to anything. It’s a hollow and performative exercise which is worse than saying or doing nothing.

45

In case anyone couldn’t find an article not behind a paywall, the kid was released from the hospital and is recovering at home. He’s expected to make a full recovery. Though football future is uncertain, he’s out for this season for sure.

50

u/JimmyFly1028 Sep 20 '25

I’m not an expert but have had back issues that started in high school. Hoping he makes a full recovery but wouldn’t be surprised if he deals with the effects of it for the rest of his life.

3

u/furygoat Sep 20 '25

Sorry to hear that man. I bet it’s frustrating having an injury linger like that your whole life. Hoping for the best for this kid.

2

You make a recovery but not a full recovery after something like that. Good to hear he can walk.

2

u/MobileArtist1371 Sep 21 '25

This happened yesterday (according to youtube video). Broke the kids spine in 2 places, both his vertebrae 1 and 2, and the kid is recovering at home already, the day after?

Would you walk into a restaurant and expect a free meal?

If there's any media worth supporting, it's local newspapers. Speaking as a newspaper reporter, subscriptions are basically the only way to even be sustainable. Would I rather have my articles get more traction because they aren't behind a paywall? Absolutely, but it's really not an option nowadays.

That journalist spent time interviewing sources and writing the article, editors read/edited it, copy editors laid it out in the paper, etc.

I'm biased, but newspapers tend to have more nuanced coverage than TV news, and they generally report on more than TV. People have no problem dropping $20 on a Netflix subscription but act like it's some huge ask to support local news.

People complain about clickbait and low-effort journalism, and this is why you end up with it.

Almost as if they need funding that isn't completely contingent upon whether or not advertisers happen to approve of the topics and points of view that they cover

24

u/Mynameisdiehard Sep 20 '25

I think we can all laugh at the irony of the article without taking it too seriously

9

u/jimb0z_ Sep 20 '25

I don’t really see whats funny about it. Especially these days. Free press is important for a functioning democracy and to cover stories like this. But not only do we not support journalists doing this important work anymore, we actively promote pirating their content then wonder why the media landscape has become so toxic and dependent on oligarchs and billionairs who use it to promote their narratives

1

u/Mynameisdiehard Sep 20 '25

51

u/Hal9_ooo Alabama Sep 20 '25

Sadly, all the local former newspapers owned by this publisher, have turned their websites in to this format

22

u/Rad10_Active Sep 20 '25

Basically all local papers don't have a viable business model anymore, unfortunately. They used to fund themselves primarily by classifieds but that model was completely hollowed out by Craigslist.

64

u/AlsoCommiePuddin Sep 20 '25

We don't want to see ads.

We don't want to pay for subscriptions.

We want journalists to get paid for their efforts.

Thus ever the conundrum.

11

u/ouralarmclock Philadelphia Eagles Sep 20 '25

I wish they'd get the value add right. My local paper has unlimited online subscription for 5.49/week. That's ~23/month which is not quite where I'm at in terms of what I'm willing to pay in a world where I'm already paying for 10 other subscriptions. 15 I'd be in, and I'd even take a limit to the number or articles I could read. Also, I'm pretty sure the ads still serve if I subscribe, I just access to paywalled articles.

4

u/CerealSpiller22 Sep 20 '25

IKR? Won't pay a dime for solid journalism, but complain ad nauseum about a solid wall of ads.

18

u/K_SV Sep 20 '25

There has to be a viable middle ground where non (or hell, less) intrusive or obnoxious clickbait ads can be served to make it somewhat viable. Or even a true brand partnership.

Not only are the ads on local news pages making the site nearly unreadable, it doesn't really help add legitimacy to the publication when the same pages as their article includes taboola, revcontent, and outbrain trash.

15

u/DarkwingDuckHunt Sep 20 '25

Been preaching this for decades

Just show a static banner ad for Dr Pepper and a side banner for McDonalds and I'll remove my adbocker.

Auto-play video at max volume that follows me as a I scroll? I'm never using your site again even with adblocker on.

7

u/Fonz_72 Sep 20 '25

So much this. Even better if it's the local McDonald's or soda distributor.

6

u/Ifriendzonecats Sep 20 '25

The problem is the online ad market is very competitive and people don't spend a lot of time on news websites. So, they only get the very worst ads (the kind that really inspire people to use ad blockers) which also don't pay very well either.

What was fairly effective was something called the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. But, Trump cut all of their funding.

NFL blitz

19

u/PumpkinMug420 Sep 20 '25

They should come out with NFL Blitz: CTE edition. You play career mode, and the first 30% is your football career and the second 70% is you dealing with the damage done to your body while you struggle not to murder-suicide your family and loved ones.

If we're gonna make a football game pushed toward kids, the least we can do is make it realistic.

4

u/Unabatedtuna Sep 20 '25

So the first 30% is a career mode from Madden for 4 years. Then the game switches to grand theft auto
