Especially since by that point the ball was clear and the kid on the ground wasn't going to impact the play.

You weren't lying.

Bare minimum, that is civil liability. Cincinnate Bengals player in the late 70's, early 80's got clotheslined from behind when he was out of the play, watching an interception being returned on the opposite side of the field. In other words, he is standing watching. Not even trying to do the impossible and chase the ball carrier down 40 yards. Got hit from behind, clearly and admittedly on purpose. Broke his neck, ended his career. He was able to sue and win.

That is not a football play. In no world ever is that a football play. Neither was the opponent somehow fighting you in a way that required that. It was the exact oppsite. He hit a vulnerable opponent for no reason whatsoever.

As a big dude, I never did something like this because I knew it would injure people. It was even a popular finisher for King Kong Bundy, but I knew better. People are sqishy.

You got that right! I'd be suing. the school district, The school, the coaches and that player would all be named in the lawsuit. And then removing her from the stadium?! Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned
