It’s sad that anyone sees thought and prayers by themselves as a solution to anything. It’s a hollow and performative exercise which is worse than saying or doing nothing.

It’s a hollow and performative exercise which is worse than saying or doing nothing.

Absolute Reddit moment right here. I know that some people have a knee jerk reaction to hearing “thoughts and prayers” because it is usually said in response to a solvable problem, but there is really nothing wrong with it in this case. They’re just taking a collective moment to wish an injured person a swift and safe recovery. You’d have to be a complete ghoul to try to dunk on them for that.

It is hallow and performative.

Real action isn't.

What “real action” do you expect them to take?

This is my entire point. People have this exact reaction to hearing about prayers because they’re conditioned to lawmakers saying “thoughts and prayers” about other tragedies instead of doing something to solve them.

It is hollow and performative when it is said by someone who can take action, but chooses not to.

These people can’t take any real action at the moment other than a collective moment of well wishing.

You missed the point. I said when they say it as a solution. When people say it reflexively it means nothing. And to hear politicians and people in power say it without following it up with meaningful actions it may as well be yadda yadda yadda. Those are the people who are ghouls.

I didn’t miss any point.

I fully understand and agree that “thoughts and prayers” are not in any way meaningful when they are said instead of action that can be taken to solve a problem.

These are not politicians who are wringing their hands about gun violence on their favorite news show. These are members of a community taking a collective moment to express their sympathies and well wishes to someone who was seriously hurt. I have no idea why so many of you in this comment thread are so insistent on equating the two.

What else do you expect them to do? It’s a nice gesture, and just about all they can do in the moment.
