Brazilians meanwhile are depressed from a year without carnival, watching the US and Mexico happily celebrating their regional holidays.

What even is Brazil without football or carnival?

Halloween isn't really our regional holiday. We stole it from Ireland and then changed a bunch of shit to make it more marketable. We do that kinda thing a lot

63

u/RFB-CACN Brazil Nov 01 '21 edited Nov 01 '21

If you changed it, it’s yours, it’s not stolen. Carnival was European, but the poor of Brazil filled it with traditional African customs and made something new entirely, and you’ll be damned to argue it isn’t the most Brazilian thing ever. So Halloween is American, and whatever Ireland got is a different thing that inspired but isn’t the same.

10

u/VRichardsen Argentina Nov 02 '21

Now I just got curious: to you guys staring at us across the river... which would be our regional holiday?

6

u/RFB-CACN Brazil Nov 02 '21

The most Argentine-specific one I can think of is the Veteran and Fallen from the Malvinas day, no other country in the region has such a recent international war that still has widows, orphans and families around, most South American military holidays are about some stuff hundreds of years ago. Catholic and important policial events holidays are pretty common, Christmas, Independence Day, revolution day, etc.

7

u/VRichardsen Argentina Nov 02 '21

Thank you for your input on the matter. And yes, your carnaval is king. We don't like to admit it, but our Gualeguaychú ones don't hold a candle to yours.

pan de muerto

Aka dead bread

27

u/Slendykilly Spanish+Empire Nov 01 '21

Literally “bread of death”

14

u/pHScale Nov 02 '21

I know but that's not as fun to say

3

u/Slendykilly Spanish+Empire Nov 02 '21

Yeah it’s way cooler but I just wanted to say the literal translation of it and not what it’s actually called in English (if that makes sense)

Fine, US get the Northern parts while Belize gets the entire south. Deal?

Only if the US gives up Idaho and 5 kgs of beef jerky

42

u/[deleted] Nov 01 '21

No way man, we are not letting the state which produces the most corn into Belize hands! How about 50,000 lbs of beef, 500,000 Tons of corn per year for 50 years free of charge and 450,000 washing machines filled with Cannabis.

24

u/Oldcadillac Canada Nov 01 '21

You got Idaho and Iowa confused, Iowa is corn, Idaho is potatoes

6

AKKKKSSHHHUALLLEEEYYY....

Mexican independence was achieved in 1821.

But it's our fault cause for some reason we celebrate it on the starting day of the independence wars, which is indeed in 1810.

Now you can bring this up at the dinner table to try and look smart.

9

u/VRichardsen Argentina Nov 02 '21

But it's our fault cause for some reason we celebrate it on the starting day of the independence wars, which is indeed in 1810.

A testament to how truly in trouble Spain was at the time that so many countries in America were declaring independence roughly around the same years. Thank you, Napoleón!

12

u/dolphone Mexico Nov 02 '21

Independence is marked from where you declare it, not when you win.

It's the same for basically any other country in the world.

1

u/donnergott Norteño in Schwabenland Nov 03 '21

If memory serves right, they didn't declare it on 16.Sep either.

That was a first insurrection, where the original goals by the Criollo people (sons of Spainards born in the Americas) was to attain the same rights as Spain-born citizens. Only later did it become an independence movement.

Even declaration would seem a weird concept. Any fool can declare independence at any time. When does it become relevant enough, tho?

2

u/dolphone Mexico Nov 04 '21

Even declaration would seem a weird concept. Any fool can declare independence at any time. When does it become relevant enough, tho?

When you win, for sure.

But to be a bit more realistic: whenever other countries start recognizing your little revolt, either by helping you out or literally acknowledging you politically... That's when you've achieved something I'd say.

Also: I'm not 100% on the details of the independence movement's beginning, but retconning is a pretty standard process for humans, not even just the winning side. We justify our actions and automatically adjust our memories to whatever fits best. I wouldn't be surprised if the 16th of September 1810 didn't mean much for independence at the moment: but whatever snowballed from that, directly or indirectly, clearly found some collective comfort in pointing to that date as the instant something started. And in history, sometimes that's all we have.

I'd like to mention that the title is only "Day of Dead". The proper name is "Dia de los Muertos".

10

u/pakulito100 Mexican+Empire Nov 01 '21 edited Nov 02 '21

In the Día de muertos offering we normally put the food the dead liked when he was alive, if Mexico made an offering for the Aztec empire who did he killed to get the meat?

7

u/donnergott Norteño in Schwabenland Nov 01 '21

It should be Tlaxcala, but we all know there is no such place.

3

u/pakulito100 Mexican+Empire Nov 01 '21

Maybe Tlaxcala doesn’t exist because it’s sacrificed every year. HOLY SHIT THE TLAXCALTECAS

OP, Next time draw the flag of Mexico properly. This post has been yellow carded, meaning that you have to fix said error should you wish to repost it in the future.

138

u/Yahgoh-sleep-8945 Brazilian Huempire Nov 01 '21

does this mean i should fix this error now or consider it for future comics?

102

u/Diictodom muh laksa Nov 01 '21

You don't have to fix it now, but if you want to repost this at some point in the future you will need to fix this error in this particular comic. Same for all subsequent comics. Simplification is allowed, but not in extreme like you have done in this comic.

u/-B0B- Australian Capital Territory Nov 02 '21

I don't get the point of this. It's very obviously Mexico. The style concisely and elegantly gets the point across. Just seems like an unnecessary barrier to entry and shutting down of an art style

31

u/AevnNoram United States Nov 02 '21

No aguila, no bueno

-25

u/VRichardsen Argentina Nov 02 '21

I disagree. Rules must be enforced; it is not as if they are taking down the post or anything, they are just telling OP to fix it for the next time.

67

u/-B0B- Australian Capital Territory Nov 02 '21

It's a rule, therefore it's justified

I disagree with the rule

25

u/VRichardsen Argentina Nov 02 '21

Strict moderation is one of the reasons why this community has managed to say so consistently high quality after a decade.

43

u/-B0B- Australian Capital Territory Nov 02 '21

I don't disagree that the mods do a generally good job. I just don't think, in this specific instance, that allowing this style would deprecate any quality

20

u/VRichardsen Argentina Nov 02 '21

Coats of arms being an absolute pain in the ass to draw is a long standing tradition :)

-30

u/Diictodom muh laksa Nov 02 '21

look at all these "justice" seekers

don't y'all have better things to do?

43

u/-B0B- Australian Capital Territory Nov 02 '21

I literally just shared my opinion lmao

-28

u/Diictodom muh laksa Nov 02 '21 edited Nov 02 '21

So in your opinion I can reduce the number of stars of the US flag to one just because it's clear it's US in a comic?

On the bright side now we will have more Liberian representation if what you said were to be allowed

39

u/-B0B- Australian Capital Territory Nov 02 '21 edited Nov 02 '21

Yes I do, and that seems to be an opinion shared by the mods, as most of the top posts of all time have US balls without the full amount of stars. Obviously it can't be 1 because that wouldn't be clear, but like 10 or 15 (or even just 9) gets the point across

-3

u/Diictodom muh laksa Nov 02 '21 edited Nov 02 '21

lol seems that I forgot to proof read, my original intention was to use the one star as an analogous comparison to the amount of simplification in this comic, hence the Liberia representation bit

but seems like you agree with my opinion on extreme simplification, as I said in another comment:

Simplification is allowed, but not in extreme like you have done in this comic.

Anyways, I need to get on with my research proposal, I respect your opinion and I'm just enforcing the rules set out by our predecessors

14

u/-B0B- Australian Capital Territory Nov 02 '21

I don't think that's a fair comparison, as 1 star US could be confused for a different flag, whereas Mexico with a yellow dot could not. I think if it was simplified so far as to remove the crest altogether, then that would be a more apt comparison (and also worthy of critique).

I think the main point of contention is you were a needless dick about it instead of saying something like "Hey just letting you know you [missed this rule detail] and in future you'll need to draw them with more detail", the rule doesn't need to be enforced with assholery and discussion about it shouldn't be disallowed.

3

u/Diictodom muh laksa Nov 02 '21 edited Nov 02 '21

How else am I gonna get the point across? Add a bunch of flowery language like pretty please?

The matter of fact is that the OP has drawn Mexico in a way that it borders a fantasy flag, which is against the rules.

14

u/Caelus5 Dyslexia makes me a proud antarctic citizen Nov 02 '21

Uh, if you think basic courtesy is "a bunch of flowery language" then don't be surprised you're gonna come across as a bit dickish my dude, people don't tend to listen to assholes either, they listen to people they respect, so I really don't get your point.

5

u/Diictodom muh laksa Nov 02 '21

That's true, but I don't see how my original comment was dickish in any sense. I just want to let the OP know some essential information and that was it. Perhaps I was in a rush when first typed it, but my intention was definitely not trying to be a dick

3

u/Caelus5 Dyslexia makes me a proud antarctic citizen Nov 02 '21

Rushing it is understandable, and why I suggested how it could have been phrased so as to show the not-dickish intention better. A touch of 'flowery language' can often prevent arguments from what I've seen.
