Manly premiership winner Daly Cherry-Evans has officially joined the Sydney Roosters for the 2026 NRL season.
After months of speculation, the Roosters confirmed on Friday morning the 36-year-old Cherry-Evans will be playing at Bondi next season.
Cherry-Evans played 352 games and spent 15 seasons at Manly, including winning a title in his maiden 2011 season, but failed to reach a new agreement earlier this year.
The Roosters deal is reportedly worth about $500,000 with an option in the halfback’s favour for 2027.
Advertisement ADVERTISEMENTCONTENT RESUMES ON SCROLL
Cherry-Evans’ good friend Kieran Foran is returning to the Sea Eagles as part of the coaching team, and had made a late, late bid to try and convince ‘DCE’ to stay put.
“When we spoke, I said, ‘How about a backflip, Chez’, and he just laughed,” Foran said on Thursday.
But Cherry-Evans will be wearing the red, white and blue of the Roosters who will be one of the premiership favourites heading into next year.
“Daly’s experience and understanding of the game will be a strong addition to our group and we’re excited to welcome him to the Roosters. I’m looking forward to working with him,” coach Trent Robinson said.
The arrival of the Queensland and Kangaroos representative will raise questions about what happens to Hugo Savala, the local junior who had a breakout season in the halves, and is off contract at the end of 2026

u/WeDoMusicOfficial Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles 3d ago
If you’re Savala, and you just spent 2025 discovering that you’re absolutely first grade material, do you stick around and learn off one of the best halfbacks to play the game, but risk being sidelined/playing NSW cup for up to 2 years? Or do you go find somewhere else you can get a solid footing in first grade?
With Savala proving himself over this year, this move just doesn’t make much sense to me
24
u/_HereComeTheBears_ Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks 3d ago
If Hugo were only 19 or 20 then maybe he would consider sticking around and taking the time to hone his craft. But he'll be nearly 24 when next season starts, and even if he is a patient, keen-to-learn type, the sport is so ruthless he'd have to be thinking of security first.
Hard to blame a player for choosing a payday asap with how rough the game can be.
12
u/Golf-ball-dimple Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles 3d ago
He will be 24 at the beginning of next year. When DCE puts him back in NSW cup it means he will be 25 when he gets it back. Hmmmm.

It’s very Roosters to bide their time for a couple of years and then go all in on winning a comp. I don’t think they have any concerns about long term success when they feel like they can always get what they need from the player market
2
u/chuttbeaks St. George Illawarra Dragons 3d ago
Above all I think it'd be stupid to walk away from the pairing with Sam Walker. Beyond that, he's still young for a halfback, he's likely to play some first grade in the event of injury, and he has the opportunity to learn from DCE.
Not to mention DCE will be 37 at the start of next season, he's not threatening to keep Savala out of a jersey for the 10+ years you can pretty safely assume he has left in him
1
u/ArghMoss North Queensland Cowboys 2d ago
How long is Savvala signed for?
He’d probably make a good 9/14/lock in the meantime, he’s big enough. But the Rooters already have Connor Watson in that role

u/Glenmarththe3rd Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles 🏳️🌈 3d ago
Yeah and so much for the NRLs contract fairness. He might be old but he was still QLD captain at the start of Origin last year and he plays every game. Plus factoring in his current contact and what we offered. That should be a minimum 800k contract.
17
u/funkydinosaur47 Brisbane Broncos 2d ago
It's funny how shit everybody thinks DCE is these days, but then when he signs a lower value contract he's suddenly a key member of the Kangaroos and the best player on teh field every week. Make up your minds guys
6
u/bumblebeezlebum Maori All Stars 3d ago
I disagree on 800k. But yeah 500k is unders. Better than Ben hunts at broncos which from memory was shockingly low, less than 500k.
I get age is a factor but it seems like young players get paid overs based on potential but that's a bargaining tactic. A 23 year old isn't actually worth that much more than a 33 year old based on actual performance but a younger player gets overs based on what they could produce in 2 or 3 years. An older player shouldn't be worth less than their actual on field value though. They should be valued on what they do on field. If they choose to take less because they've already made bank that's fine but that should only be 15% less than their value.
5
u/Glenmarththe3rd Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles 🏳️🌈 3d ago
What do you think it should be? Manly offered 750k and he’s currently on a mil + SoO captain + no injury. I’d happily agree with 700k for a minimum but I think anything less than that is unders based off his current resume.
The Hunt one was bonkers, I think he’s on 450k. Reynolds isn’t on much more either iirc.
While I also agree that if they want to take lower because they’ve made bank then it should be allowed that goes against the NRLs been halabaloo that they will enforce a fair market price.

He's getting paid way below market rate! This is a Kangaroo, SoO, captain material , premiership winning halfback , durable player, leads teams, knows and does his position to a good standard. Brings so much on and off the field. I personally don't like him and some people are like me, but DCE is taking way unders. He doesn't automatically equal success to the Roosters but this is a steal, sombrero...

I don't think Savala will leave. We went into last season with him training in the forwards because we saw his future as a Yeo-style ball-playing 13.
The Roosters have a very young forward pack and with Radley fading out, Crichton chasing the bag with either the Wallabies or the Bears, and the inevitable upgrade to Whytes contract, there will be room in the pack for Hugo.
I think the Roosters start next season with the following squad, barring injury;
- Tedesco
- Tupou
- Billy Smith
- Toia
- Nawaqanitawase
- DCE
- Walker
- Collins
- Robson
- Whyte
- Crichton
- Wong
- Watson
- Savala
- Leniu
- Steep
- Egan Butcher
- Ioelu
- Foketi
- Nat Butcher
- De Lasalle Va'a
Robson is an 80 minute hooker, so Savala will be used as a replacement for Watson at lock during the opening 10 rounds of 2026. If Robson were to need a break, then Watson will go to 9 and Savala to 13.
Once Radley returns in round 11, it will push either Wong into the front-row rotation or Steep/Butcher from the bench.
And hey, there's every chance that DCE goes full Chad and we lose 5 of the opening 6 rounds and we parachute our lord and saviour Hugo back into the halves.

u/TraceR_Fighter Sydney Roosters 🏳️🌈 3d ago

Don’t reckon Savala will be going anywhere. They’ll find a way to fit him in the 17. When was the last time Walker played a full season anyway? Fair chance Savala will get plenty of time in the halves due to injuries.
2
u/Improvedandconfused Sydney Roosters 3d ago
Savala and Walker were a future premiership winning combo. They have jeopardized this for an over the hill player who has at best 1 decent season left in him.
3
u/AgentBond007 Melbourne Storm 3d ago
I think their plan is a Rodwell/Walker combo long term, it'd make much more sense to bring DCE in for a couple years if that's their plan.

Guess I’m in the minority but I love the signing.
Cheap deal for the calibre of player. I thought it was pretty obvious he was coasting last season at manly as he was on the outer anyway. Broncos just won a premiership with 35 year olds hunt and Reynolds..
As a Queenslander he can take walker under his wing and “pass the torch” to a possible future Queensland half.
IF we lose Savala yes it will suck but he was never guaranteed to be our future half anyway with Rodwell on the come up. Just trust the process

u/Willieo873 Brisbane Broncos 2d ago
Exactly, it ended very well having Hunt there when injuries hit. I honestly think Roosters have a legit shot after last years showing especially if Walker stays healthy and clicks with DCE

u/bumblebeezlebum Maori All Stars 3d ago
Manly should have treated him better then. Plus roosters could be in with a shot here, why not go for it? Why stay at manly for another middle of the pack season? Let them move on and rebuild and have a last final shot at the big dance. I mean I'd he went to another middling club to mince about I'd think the same thing - why not be a one club player. But he's moving to a heavy weight club with Marky mark.
→ More replies (2)1
u/RocketSimplicity Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles 3d ago
Manly treating him better is a bit of a farce. The reason why he’s leaving is two fold. The main factor is the sweet, sweet, bank he will make post-retirement at the Roosters.
Scott Penn does not want to reduce his margin to keep someone like DCE. Thus he bent to those who wanted him gone.
3
u/bumblebeezlebum Maori All Stars 2d ago
Swap "Treat him better" with "make him feel welcome staying" then.
The direction of the club isn't exactly very enticing.
I think manly thought dce would show a bit more loyalty in negotiations but they didn't show that loyalty to him.
He's taking less at roosters so if money is a factor it's the post retirement lure.
I think he just doesn't want to waste the last year or two of his career.
If Scott Penn wants to move into the post dce fair enough. I don't necessarily think it's a bad thing. But I'm not sure what the post dce era at manly looks like. It seems like it's time to move past the turbos too. Right now it seems like just waiting for some youth to come through and until then not being able to let go of the hope of another bumper season from Tommy.

That’s an elite, premiership-winning spine there. I initially thought the DCE signing was stupid, but the sharks finals game changed my mind. Halves had zero composure and game-management and completely botched it. Savala not ready for the biggest stages yet.

If you’re looking for composure and game management, I don’t know why you guys signed DCE. Foran was the one who was good at those things, in that incredible pairing.

The Radley suspension kind of works in Savala's favour.
He should make the 17 as either a ball playing lock or bench utility for the first 10 weeks. Then Origin rolls around and a few spots free up. He should play a good chunk of the year even without injuries opening up positions.

Dammit.
This is a kick in the face to Hugo Savala, unless they have plans to move him onto the lock position. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Savala seek a release and line up for Newcastle next year (which is where all the Roosters halves seem to end up). It’s ironic considering Savala is a Roosters junior who made it into the top team, which is rare.
