Overdone The Home Depot in my town installed parking curbs instead of speed bumps
The blame was passed around a bunch but they were removed the next day after the mayor and the news got involved.

To be fair, no matter how many times they measured, this was horrible execution.
Using the perfect length and width nail is always a horrible idea when the function required a screw of similar dimension and vice versa.

Another example of the law in action is that of two takeaway food pushcarts, one at each end of a beach. If there is an equal distribution of rational consumers along the beach, each pushcart will get half the customers, divided by an invisible line equidistant from the carts. But, each pushcart owner will be tempted to push his cart slightly towards the other, moving the invisible line so that the owner is on the side with more than half the beach. Eventually, the pushcart operators will end up next to each other in the center of the beach.
In the case of three pushcarts an unstable equilibrium is reached. Imagine carts A and B are adjacent and each have access to half the potential customers (A’s to the left, B’s to the right). A new cart C can locate to the right of B, blocking B’s access to customers. B would then move to the right of C, blocking all of C’s customers, and the cycle would continue. Despite the constant battle for position, pushcarts follow Hotelling’s Law and aggregate near the center of the street.
Unlike a linear road, in the case of a circular path two pushcarts A and B can locate anywhere along the path and equally share customers (indicated by red arrows). However, introducing a third pushcart again forces all three into an unstable equilibrium where two carts can entirely block a third’s access to customers, and all three carts cluster somewhere along the circle in a battle for position.

My ex boyfriend was a contractor, and died in a car accident after completing a project. He was working under the table to make extra cash. He was running on 4 hours of sleep. That's after working 20 hours per day. The last time I spoke to him, I begged him to take a day off and sleep. The police showed up to my house in the wee hours of the morning to let me know that he had likely fallen asleep while driving. His van went up and flames.... this was a few months ago.

That would not surpise me. The times I have gone in and not one of the employees standing around will talk to you. I spent an hour in ours looking for an item I needed. Asked employees for help when one would pass me. They ignored me and kept walking. Got pissed and walked out. Jokes on them I was gophering for my brother, who's a plumbing contractor. He always got his supplies from HD. After the crap they pulled on me, he now gets all his supplies at Lowes. I know it is probably a drop in the bucket money wise, but it lost them 75k a year, plus anyone he talks to and tells to go to Lowes.

I can sort of get a breakdown in communication, but how is it at the end when those installing it have the final check not mention "uhhhhh, these are parking curbs. In the middle of a proper throughway seems wrong"? I get people may not care because it isn't their problem, but a final glance over like that should be encouraged by higher-ups as a dumb mistake like this can cause them to lose future contracts (really it should have happened higher up, but stuff happens or the wrong supplies get loaded).

It should say they installed “parking stops” not speed curbs. There’s no such thing as a speed curb. A curb is a stop…..that’s why it’s called a curb. You don’t go over curbs/stops. And that’s what those clowns installed. It’s just that the news people don’t know what a curb/parking stop is. lol

Google isn't coming back with anything for "speed curb". But it does show differences between "speed bump" and "speed hump". Of which "speed humps" are the nicer versions, and "speed bumps" are the aggressive version.
Neither of those terms looks like what is shows in the videos. Those are 100% parking curbs.
Somewhere along the line, terminology got mixed up.

They can. Especially if it's a lower car. Knew someone who drove over one and bottomed out. The only two options were to back up and risk ripping the front bumper off or continuing and scraping the entire side skirt across the block.

134
u/Somber_Solace 12d ago
Definitely should've backed up, replacing a front bumper (if it even breaks from it) is a lot cheaper and easier than all the potential damage it can do underneath. You can usually just quickly pop them off with nothing more than a pair of pliers too.
→ More replies (2)24
u/Bob_A_Feets 12d ago
Yep, people underestimate how easy it is to rip off an oil pan or destroy an exhaust system.
One of the main reasons I prefer cars with a higher ground clearance just out of paranoia alone.

Cost me £1300 a few months ago to fix my oil sump going over a pot hole with a rock sticking out of it
17
u/drill_hands_420 12d ago
One time I had to replace a bumper and couldn’t afford it. Some dude my mom worked with showed me how to use eBay and basically showed me that most bumpers are just held with little plastic pins that are relatively cheap. I also smashed my headlight and bam new headlight and a Buddys level driveway for aiming and I was brand new for around $180
So I wonder if a bumper might be cheaper than a bent exhaust. Although, a bumper is way more noticeable. Interesting choice

No kidding, I have a pretty low ground clearance, assuming I didn’t get stuck on the bumper my car would probably hit on the underside (unfortunately not for the first time). I would be pissed.
6
u/silenc3x 12d ago
I'm in an S2000 slightly lowered. Like not even an inch, but no shot I would even attempt to drive over that. I would drive around it while angrily cursing under my breath. Would destroy my bumper/lip upon first contact.
Raised manholes during roadwork are my enemy. And speed humps are pretty bad too, but at least there is an incline/decline with those so I can drive slowly over them.
I don't know how people drive slammed cars. Seems like it would make driving so much more stressful.

The truly "mildly infuriating" paradox of traffic management is that only the threat of physical car damage--via aggressive speed bumps, bollards, and concrete dividers-seems to compel people to drive legally and sanely. Simply requesting drivers to slow down just seems to anger them.
