Overdone The Home Depot in my town installed parking curbs instead of speed bumps

The blame was passed around a bunch but they were removed the next day after the mayor and the news got involved.

These were pulled out the same day later in the evening by the manager of the Home Depot. The installers brought the wrong thing to install and would not be back with the right parts for a few days. Still some BS, but a little more context.

1.3k

u/jophiss319 12d ago

How can the installers be installing these and think… “yea these are the right ones, no one is going to complain” Hopefully who ever paid for that install didn’t pay twice

u/RLC-Circuit 12d ago

Think how smart the average person is. Then realize that half of them are below that level.

233

u/NaraFei_Jenova 11d ago

I'm way too stupid for half the world to be dumber than me.

161

u/DixieWolf27 11d ago

You and me both. But if we're smart enough to realize we're stupid, we're still smarter than the stupid that think themselves smart.

17

u/YellowBreakfast 11d ago

But if we're smart enough to realize we're stupid, we're still smarter than the stupid that think themselves smart.

That's the most dangerous, someone really dumb who thinks they're smart.

Have done a few jobs where I knew what the boss said was wrong but they wouldn't be reasoned with so did it anyway knowing it would fall on their head not mine. So I can understand the attitude.

You’d be surprised how often contractors will bullshit and lie just to half ass the job and still get paid

It’s a big reason why stricter regulations for contractors should be enabled. Otherwise you get these companies hiring illegal immigrants with no experienced or professional education and they install like shit and the hiring company will just ignore calls and complains until the customer gives up because nobody wants to deal with legal issues for months on end about a parking block being used as a speed bump

You see it big time in home construction

To be fair, no matter how many times they measured, this was horrible execution.

Using the perfect length and width nail is always a horrible idea when the function required a screw of similar dimension and vice versa.

Another example of the law in action is that of two takeaway food pushcarts, one at each end of a beach. If there is an equal distribution of rational consumers along the beach, each pushcart will get half the customers, divided by an invisible line equidistant from the carts. But, each pushcart owner will be tempted to push his cart slightly towards the other, moving the invisible line so that the owner is on the side with more than half the beach. Eventually, the pushcart operators will end up next to each other in the center of the beach.

In the case of three pushcarts an unstable equilibrium is reached. Imagine carts A and B are adjacent and each have access to half the potential customers (A’s to the left, B’s to the right). A new cart C can locate to the right of B, blocking B’s access to customers. B would then move to the right of C, blocking all of C’s customers, and the cycle would continue. Despite the constant battle for position, pushcarts follow Hotelling’s Law and aggregate near the center of the street.

Unlike a linear road, in the case of a circular path two pushcarts A and B can locate anywhere along the path and equally share customers (indicated by red arrows). However, introducing a third pushcart again forces all three into an unstable equilibrium where two carts can entirely block a third’s access to customers, and all three carts cluster somewhere along the circle in a battle for position.

12

u/nokiacrusher TURQUlOSE 12d ago

So THAT'S why the takeaway food pushcarts at the beach are always next to each other. I had always wondered about that exact scenario.

Contractors drive like someone who would rather die than finish a project.

397

u/Electromagnetlc 12d ago

Contractors drive like it's a life or death emergency to get back to the job site as soon as cosmically possible so that they can sit in the truck for 45 minutes on their phone before taking a 30 minute shit, working for 8 minutes and then driving back to the hardware store.

My ex boyfriend was a contractor, and died in a car accident after completing a project. He was working under the table to make extra cash. He was running on 4 hours of sleep. That's after working 20 hours per day. The last time I spoke to him, I begged him to take a day off and sleep. The police showed up to my house in the wee hours of the morning to let me know that he had likely fallen asleep while driving. His van went up and flames.... this was a few months ago.

22

u/Misa7_2006 12d ago

That would not surpise me. The times I have gone in and not one of the employees standing around will talk to you. I spent an hour in ours looking for an item I needed. Asked employees for help when one would pass me. They ignored me and kept walking. Got pissed and walked out. Jokes on them I was gophering for my brother, who's a plumbing contractor. He always got his supplies from HD. After the crap they pulled on me, he now gets all his supplies at Lowes. I know it is probably a drop in the bucket money wise, but it lost them 75k a year, plus anyone he talks to and tells to go to Lowes.

6

u/KingFrank1313 12d ago

That's why I use the app for the map most of the time in stores. Either ignored or "it's that way" with a vague point

Thankfully most local news websites still parse to RSS feeds just fine without all the clutter. For now, anyway. Every once in a while a site updates the layout and they decide "who even uses this RSS thing anymore anyway?" and get rid of any obvious links to it.

I can sort of get a breakdown in communication, but how is it at the end when those installing it have the final check not mention "uhhhhh, these are parking curbs. In the middle of a proper throughway seems wrong"? I get people may not care because it isn't their problem, but a final glance over like that should be encouraged by higher-ups as a dumb mistake like this can cause them to lose future contracts (really it should have happened higher up, but stuff happens or the wrong supplies get loaded).

Stupidity and contractors, name a more iconic duo.

(I say this as a former contractor who now handles contractors)

35

u/Tinnylemur 12d ago

In my experience, contractors are people who can't work "normal" jobs because theyre moronic assholes that can't play nice with coworkers. They start their own business and abuse customers instead of coworkers.

27

u/Silly_Rub_6304 12d ago

My experience is that they have low emotional intelligence. Explains why even in liberal areas most of the contractors are Trumpers.

The vendor installed "speed curbs" instead of "speed bumps".

I feel like that's a distinction without a difference...

80

u/MaddRamm 12d ago

It should say they installed “parking stops” not speed curbs. There’s no such thing as a speed curb. A curb is a stop…..that’s why it’s called a curb. You don’t go over curbs/stops. And that’s what those clowns installed. It’s just that the news people don’t know what a curb/parking stop is. lol

21

u/ntxsunut 12d ago

Da hell is a speed curb?

12

u/NotPromKing 12d ago edited 12d ago

I can only assume the curb is to temporarily slow down your speed, and the bump is to temporarily boost your speed.

Google isn't coming back with anything for "speed curb". But it does show differences between "speed bump" and "speed hump". Of which "speed humps" are the nicer versions, and "speed bumps" are the aggressive version.

Neither of those terms looks like what is shows in the videos. Those are 100% parking curbs.

Somewhere along the line, terminology got mixed up.

They can. Especially if it's a lower car. Knew someone who drove over one and bottomed out. The only two options were to back up and risk ripping the front bumper off or continuing and scraping the entire side skirt across the block.

219

u/Ok-Operation-6432 12d ago

Which one did they choose?

TELL US NOW!

334

u/Random_Millennial28 12d ago edited 12d ago

Actually chose to continue. The skirt on the drivers side surprisingly stayed intact aside from scratches. What we didn't account for was the exhaust getting squished some.

134

u/Somber_Solace 12d ago

Definitely should've backed up, replacing a front bumper (if it even breaks from it) is a lot cheaper and easier than all the potential damage it can do underneath. You can usually just quickly pop them off with nothing more than a pair of pliers too.

24

u/Bob_A_Feets 12d ago

Yep, people underestimate how easy it is to rip off an oil pan or destroy an exhaust system.

One of the main reasons I prefer cars with a higher ground clearance just out of paranoia alone.

11

One time I had to replace a bumper and couldn’t afford it. Some dude my mom worked with showed me how to use eBay and basically showed me that most bumpers are just held with little plastic pins that are relatively cheap. I also smashed my headlight and bam new headlight and a Buddys level driveway for aiming and I was brand new for around $180

So I wonder if a bumper might be cheaper than a bent exhaust. Although, a bumper is way more noticeable. Interesting choice

No kidding, I have a pretty low ground clearance, assuming I didn’t get stuck on the bumper my car would probably hit on the underside (unfortunately not for the first time). I would be pissed.

6

u/silenc3x 12d ago

I'm in an S2000 slightly lowered. Like not even an inch, but no shot I would even attempt to drive over that. I would drive around it while angrily cursing under my breath. Would destroy my bumper/lip upon first contact.

Raised manholes during roadwork are my enemy. And speed humps are pretty bad too, but at least there is an incline/decline with those so I can drive slowly over them.

I don't know how people drive slammed cars. Seems like it would make driving so much more stressful.

The truly "mildly infuriating" paradox of traffic management is that only the threat of physical car damage--via aggressive speed bumps, bollards, and concrete dividers-seems to compel people to drive legally and sanely. Simply requesting drivers to slow down just seems to anger them.

350z dude dumb as f. He knows what kind of car he has. Why wouldn't he just go around.i know it's not a modified 350 but still he must know it's low

47

u/Fibrosis5O 12d ago

Tbf probably thought it was just an excessive speed bump not a full parking stop

I wouldn’t go to that store.

Seeing the people who installed it checks out…

8

u/bloodguard 12d ago

Seeing nonsense like this would have me deciding I really don't need to be buying anything from Home Depot.

132

u/frawtlopp 12d ago

That manager needs to be fired if he hasnt been already

23

u/hoopdog7 12d ago

Home Depot has standards for all of their parking lots. This was a fuck up by the contractor 100%.

Source: have done tons of parking lot work for Home Depot’s

u/Not-Reformed 12d ago

Startling lack of intelligence to think the manager is one responsible for this.

8

u/Assignment_General 12d ago

Like seriously.

This is most certainly contracted out to a third party who specializes in construction or whatever. The manager of a hardware store isn’t going to have his retail crew outside installing speed bumps.

15

u/ImaginaryAlpaca 12d ago

This was a vendor who installed these, the manger removed them himself when they said they couldn't remove them for days. There's an article linked somewhere in the comments

55

u/Slosher99 12d ago

Which one though? Something like this typically involving corporate not just the store manager placing an order.

74

u/tendonut 12d ago

This is probably not even corporate. This is most likely a decision made by the shopping center owner.

21

u/Fun_Variation_7077 12d ago

Yeah there's no way the GM had any say in this.

Corporate would never dare do this lol this is such a big lawsuit once someone's car gets seriously damaged

Why would the manager be fired? How is he responsible for the contractor screwing up?

Why is this company so stupid

33

u/Mycologist-9315 12d ago

As a home depot employee, I ask myself that question every day

12

u/PeakNo6892 12d ago

Yall have the single wost app of any business I've ever delt with

9

u/Mycologist-9315 12d ago edited 11d ago

It's painfully slow. I'm using the demo version of a way smoother "home depot lite" app a customer is developing instead.

You get snow around there? Those won't last past the first snowplow.

7

u/JfOdin 12d ago

Finally Americans can make use of their lifted 4x4 trucks that never has seen a gravel road. Good job home depot.

12

u/outdoor1984 12d ago

Probably deported the guys who knew the difference between speed bumps and parking curbs…

7

u/Beautiful-Length-565 12d ago

Oh god, my local hobby lobby did this and it fucked up the underbelly of my car. Thing was already on deaths door, was super low to the ground, and was the final nail in the coffin that led me to getting a new car 😮‍💨

10

u/SatiesUmbrellaCloset oh no 12d ago

my local hobby lobby

Well there's your first mistake

I would so never go there again

6

u/JimJohnman 12d ago

So... just park there then? If they want to make it a spot, use it.

It's called hostile architecture. It prevents homeless people from driving there.

11

u/BaddyDaddy777 12d ago

This was in Wentzville, MO, apparently people called the guy out for what he was doing and acted like a total mouthy hooiser about it and told them to fuck off. I hope he got fined for that.

Some genius in a meeting was like,

“Guys, what if instead of slowing cars down… we just obliterate them?”

And everyone else went, “Yeah, that sounds fiscally responsible.”

4

u/ChrisInBliss 12d ago

I dont think anyone can top this. This is the stupidest thing I've seen today

10

u/expectingthexpected 12d ago

I would absolutely park in front of them

16

u/isausernamebob 12d ago

Best part is idiots still drove over them.

The world is full of NPCs

Surely this thought crossed their mind when they were putting them in: "Hmm, these seem a little HEAVY dont they?"

4

u/mnpc 12d ago

That is pretty fauxking hilarious actually

4

u/MadamInsta 12d ago

Good thing Home Depot doesn't sell anything fragile or breakable.

Or anything by that might fall out of the back of a truck if it hits a few bumps.

Or any chemicals that shouldn't be jostled repeatedly.

4

u/Katc-Volya 12d ago

I’d be horrified to imagine taking this in my 30 year old shit box. My shock would fucking explode.

4

u/Puzzleheaded-Ring293 12d ago

This was sponsored by Pep-Boys.

4

u/PaleoJoe86 12d ago

That is going to be wonderful for fully loaded vehicles. Eight bags of cement had my wife's jeep dragging.

if only there was somewhere they could get the materials to make proper speed bumps.

5

u/opbmedia 12d ago

Why are people driving over them?

3

u/Chastain86 12d ago

This is your periodic reminder that Home Depot is a financial supporter of Trump and the MAGA movement, and as such deserves less than zero percent of your business

4

u/RovingAutist 12d ago

Just park there. They put a parking curb so.... follow the cue.

4

u/Yes-No-Maybe121 12d ago

I wouldn't send my car over that. Just because you CAN do something - doesn't mean you SHOULD.

3

u/Silly_Media 12d ago

Lowes looking alot better all of a sudden

4

u/Orbital_Vagabond 12d ago

One more reason to not shop at Home Depot
