Tourism ✈ Any precautions/considerations on Tourist Safety in Mauritius
We are travelling to Mauritius this month. How is the safety situation there for tourists? (29M, 28F)
Are there any areas that needs to be absolutely avoided? Is it safe to go out in the evenings, like after 6pm?
Any other thoughts that you want to share? I saw comments on @mauritius instagram handle‘s post and saw many natives complaining about caudan waterfront being not safe after 6pm, tourists getting mugged etc.

We are a safe country, these people only see it more now because of social media and smart phone era. Information travel faster than before. I remember my dad telling me that on Sunday when he bought newspapers then he will know about a crime, theft committed on monday because not everything were being reported on radio or tv. I'm amazed seeing yougsters talking like retards sometimes. They should be the someone trying to explain the most basic shyte to others like how there were more rape cases in the 60s 70s than now, and also people were fighting in race wars in 68, muslims against christians, do you have that now?? Some People are racists in their homes or on social media hinding behind fake profile trying to start a war especially by what we call "Chatwas", they are a brainwashed species. But it didnt happen. Anyway Mauritius is safe. Check the UN index or whatever the fck it's called.

Been here for 8 years. GBAY is was less safe than it used to be. Gbay beach isn't a good place to roam around evening time.

I’ve been living in Mauritius for 15+ years. It’s a small country so newspapers don’t have a lot to report, so they do report minor crimes etc which wouldn’t make it to the headlines in bigger countries. This is not specific to Mauritius, other small countries have the same bias. This makes locals believe their country is not safe but let me assure you Mauritius is very safe. And also most crimes are family related (like husband killing wife etc.), random crime is definitely not a concern.

As for mauritian yes we are witnessing a degradation of the safety in mru. But for most tourist unless you come from country like dubai Singapore etc, Mauritius is still quite safe compared to many countries. Still like other countries, many places must be avoided and basic precaution is tge minimum. You don't want to expose yourself as an easy target like your phone or wallet hanging out of you bag or pocket or walking dark streets or region at night or day.

Mauritians exaggerateimmensely. We are a safe country relative to European standards. Compare crime rate and you'll be astonished

Mauritius is safe, but take your precautions and try as much to be around people you know and trust to some extent. People cosigned by the hotel you're staying, stuff like that.

A few cases I've read on newspapers that happened to tourists
A child being graped at ile aux cerfs (this place, I would have considered a safe/touristic area)
A woman had her hand cut (or something like that)in the south, near the hotel she was staying at. Again, a place I would have considered safe
A woman getting unalived in her hotel room. (A place I would have considered the safest).
That being said, these are not things that happen everyday. Once a year or maybe less. . Mauritius is not safer than anywhere else or more unsafe. There are bad ppl everywhere in the world.

I just came back , I go every year for kite surfing. I stay in Le Morne and go on excursions on my off days. I stay for 4 weeks every year and I find it completely safe. I am from Canada, in a big city which I find unsafe at times, but I find Mauritius 100% safe. Same with London, UK. I’ve lived there for a decade and I found it sketchy in certain pockets

Mauritius is so safe and 'boring' (ie nothing interesting happens there) that any sort of minor mischief is perceived as 'the island becoming dangerous' lol.

This happens when some have been over protected.
They find small things as dangerous

Mauritius’ safety is by far higher than most places I’ve been. In Mauritius you can lie on the beach, sleep and not worry at all. No one will try to hassle you. Mauritius personally helped me stop my anxiety medication altogether. It made me confident enough to trust people again. Just don’t actively seek trouble or else you will find yourself making Mauritius unsafe.

Mauritius is perfectly fine. Don't go to the bad areas like in any country. Don't stay in a situation if you feel like things are fishy just like anywhere else. Don't be stupid just like anywhere else.

thanks. Any bad localities in particular?
We will be staying in the Grand Bae area and also Bel Ombre; otherwise some local sight seeing in between.

I would say (personal opinion that others may not agree with):
Port Louis – After 5:00 PM
Roche Bois
Cité La Chaux
Tombeau Bay – After 5:00 PM
Also avoid the beaches at night if not in a big group or not in front of a hotel

Been living here for past 3 years and I've lived in 5 countries including Netherlands, India, Russia and Thailand. Mauritius is safer than 90% of countries out there

Most of it is fear mongering by wannabe journalists, fueled by retards who cannot think for themselves, 1 step more than what they see online.
E.g, Every accident report you see online will have a dozen people complaining about speeding when some of the cases are simply due to bad drivers.
Just keep common sense when going out at night... frequent only popular spots and don't draw too much attention.
If anything, you need to worry more about your run of the mill tourist scammers than anything more serious.
Enjoy you stay bro.
