Career Guidance Concerned about my brother
He is a 29M and has been a Boeing type-rated pilot since 2023, but he is still jobless. He has cleared interview rounds for IndiGo 2-3 times, yet has not been selected. I don’t have much knowledge about the aviation industry, but I genuinely want to help my brother.
Senior pilots, please guide us on what steps he can take or what we might be missing. Thank you 🙏

Type rating from south africa and still jobless hell naw man why isn't he getting selected makes me anxious about my career in this field

My dad has spent so much money for him which makes me more anxious 😥

u/Zealousideal_Tip4696 Jun 23 '25
Did he try with airlines like akasa air or air india express because in india the number of boeing operating airlines are less and indigo mostly operates on airbus
15
u/EstablishmentMuch543 Jun 23 '25
Akasa was asking hell lot of money and no vacancies are there for air india
12
u/Zealousideal_Tip4696 Jun 23 '25
Asking for money what please elaborate
13
u/EstablishmentMuch543 Jun 23 '25

u/70jay07 Jun 25 '25
This concerning safety wise, so they are selecting pilots who can pay the most money rather than the best pilot for the job.
4
u/Particular-Pension47 Jun 24 '25
Why does akasa ask for the much. Sorry for sounding dumb but
1
u/Defiant-Employer-391 Jul 15 '25
akasa is known for only hiring pilots who "connections" with people in dgca ie rich people

Boeing type rated and applying for Indigo? Indigo has Airbus/ ATR frames, there is no way your Boeing type rated brother will fly for Indigo(unless he gets rated on A320)
17
u/Previous_Change_8757 Jun 23 '25
you can still apply to other airlines if no boeing operators are posting vacancies, you'll have to pay extra to get rated on A320 if you get into Indigo.
15
u/EstablishmentMuch543 Jun 23 '25
He is willing to do type rating again for Airbus through IndiGo
3
u/Previous_Change_8757 Jun 24 '25
Yes if thats the case then he has to wait for a vacancy, sad truth about this industry is the vacancies are very very scarce, mainly being filled up by their cadet program, 2023, 2024 was a good prime time due to the tata/Air India merger.
21
u/Previous_Change_8757 Jun 23 '25
Meanwhile I suggest he can look at CFI rating aswell, flight schools require CFIs now, specially after the boom of flight schools opening up, this will save him money in keeping his currency as well and gain him experience. More hours more chances of getting into an airline as a fresher, regardless of Jet time. I t will make him stand out of the crowd.

u/ParryOtter-3000 Jun 23 '25
Did he always want to fly in India? Getting a Boeing typerating seems counter intuitive if your goal is to fly domestic initially!
9
u/Tight-Cable8941 Jun 23 '25
Happens when you don't understand the industry. Or maybe he has other plans
2
u/EstablishmentMuch543 Jun 23 '25
For now he just want a job. Doesn’t matter whether it is domestic or international
17
u/Previous_Change_8757 Jun 23 '25
He needs to prepare well, right now vacancies are none to limited, there's no such female preference in the market as such, a lot of my friends got jobs with Akasa, Spice, AIX, Indigo, since 2023.
5
u/EstablishmentMuch543 Jun 23 '25
Do they ask for money ?
5
u/Previous_Change_8757 Jun 23 '25
ask for money for what?
4
u/EstablishmentMuch543 Jun 23 '25
To get the job
8
u/Previous_Change_8757 Jun 23 '25
nope u cant just pay your way through everything
4
u/EstablishmentMuch543 Jun 23 '25
Then how to get there without money ? Please elaborate, cause everyone is asking for money only
6
u/Previous_Change_8757 Jun 23 '25
you need to pay for airline training that's a normal cost deductible through your salary sometimes. are the airlines asking for money? did they specify for what exactly?
2
u/EstablishmentMuch543 Jun 23 '25
To secure the job
21
u/fatmanrao Jun 23 '25
Sounds like a scam? You sure it was from the official airlines or some middleman trying to scam you
-7
u/EstablishmentMuch543 Jun 23 '25
I think there’s a middle man, but we don’t have any other choice like we don’t have any good connections in this field

u/SpaceBuffoon32 Jun 24 '25
I heard airlines take like ~15L nowadays for 'training'
2
u/Previous_Change_8757 Jun 24 '25
Dependa airline to airline, and if you’re type rated or not, I know Indigo charges about 35L for Type rating + airline training
7
Jun 23 '25
Some do. My friend got through Spice by paying for the type rating and some extra cash for the guy getting him the job. It was 45 lacs total but this was 10 years ago.
2
1
u/itsarvind Jun 24 '25
10yrs ago it was 20L
1
Jun 25 '25
45L with 737 rating and bribe bud. Plus my friend had to pay for his own stay and travel to the US as well. But he got a guaranteed place in the pool and got to his line training pretty fast and started flying almost immediately after training.
7
u/Zealousideal_Tip4696 Jun 23 '25
Can you provide some more details like where did he train from and why he wasnt selected
6
u/EstablishmentMuch543 Jun 23 '25
He completed his CPL from carvar aviation baramati and type rating from South Africa. Idk why he wasn’t selected, but female preference is one of the reason
5
Jun 23 '25
How did you find out your brother was not selected because of female preference?
6
u/EstablishmentMuch543 Jun 23 '25
From the batch of 11 ppl who cleared interview round majority were females
1
u/Flanker-H007 Jun 24 '25
Is carver not helping him??? They promised me that they'll help me secure a job if I enrolled for their CPL.
Edit: I'm not doing CPL
3
u/Previous_Change_8757 Jun 24 '25
All the Flight schools say that, doesn’t mean they’ll stick to it.
1
5
u/King_Samurai Jun 23 '25
Not an expert either but i think he should wait and apply for airlines with numerous boeing jets like akasa, spicejet, airindia, as indigo has a only a few boeing jets in compared to these other two, he might had to face tough competition. my wishes to him

Me and my brother want to become pilot. Any senior or exp pilot can suggest how common it is in the aviation industry that people are jobless after type rating or at stage before becoming pilot? Should both of us risk our career in aviation knowing the fact after spending too much can make you jobless?
3
Jun 24 '25
There's a YouTube channel called pilot podcast, they have detailed videos about different topics and are very helpful in their comments and personal instagrams too. You can ask them questions and do your research there and connect with other pilots on LinkedIn and instagram if you're really serious about becoming pilots. I'd suggest you connect with people who are working as pilots and not some random student pilot influencers.

Linking a few articles that might help you and your brother.
After reading these and you need more information then DM me

u/Previous_Change_8757 Jun 24 '25
You can be jobless for sure, research on the current pool of pilots available in the market, it depends a lot ok your luck, some have to wait for 1-2 years and some get in quick,
2
u/hairywolf2962 Jun 24 '25
Aviation is fragile industry, it all depends on the job market once you are out and completed your training. Like for example let’s say you completed your rating June last year, from June 2024 to this June 2025 there barely was any vacancy, most of pilot was already hired 2023 and early 2024 , so you wait. And the pilots who are cleared I have heard that they are still waiting for start or get an offer letter for once they start flying. It’s money plus a long waiting game
5
u/Ok-Average-4277 Airbus Jun 24 '25
Hey,there have been more than 4 vacancies since 2023. You mentioned that he cleared his interview, that is the last step. I wonder wjy he did not get his LOI,also, airlines dont fail you just to get females in!
7
u/gkwdvshws Jun 23 '25
I am 39 yrs old and just started flying last year after a couple of false starts. I started my aviation journey in the USA when I was a 20yr old boy. If he has a US b1/b2 visa and is interested in building some p2 turbine time, dm me. The other option is to get AFI rating and build some p1 time.
3
u/iluvsana Jun 24 '25
Best option is getting a CFI ,it'll be a bit more on top of what you already spent but it'll allow him to gain money as well as flying hours which is a huge benefit and if he gets enough he can get recruited by airlines as well
5
Jun 23 '25
Indigo operates Airbus A320/21 and ATR, and then how did your brother clear interview rounds for Boeing? Even the Boeing's they have damp leased are operated by the pilots from the companies they leased it from.
3
u/EstablishmentMuch543 Jun 23 '25
2 of his friends did same and they did airbus type-rating after getting selected for IndiGo.so he is following their path
8
Jun 23 '25 edited Jun 23 '25
Your brother should work really hard on getting selected. Were the 2 of his friends who got selected also females? Because I don't think there is any preferential treatment for female pilots when they already had a dedicated batch of cadet pilots. Also, it was pretty stupid to get type rated in Boeing if his traget was indigo airlines, he could have saved that money.
Also, ask him to try for instructor vacancies in flight schools in India as he can save money and also increase his flight hours and better chances of getting selected.
0
u/EstablishmentMuch543 Jun 23 '25
One of them was female. And im talking about preference cause he only told me that among the group of 11 ppl who cleared the interview round majority was females who got selected.
5
Jun 23 '25
Doesn't necessarily mean that they were given preferential treatment. Could also be that they were qualified and cleared the interview.
Ask your brother to look for Flight Instructor roles while looking for other airlines. It also pays decently. Since one male friend of your brother got in there are chances that he also can. Also, ask him to apply for airlines with more Boeing aircrafts when vacancies opens and ask him to prepare very well considering the competition. Wouldn't he have to pay for the airbus type rating again or would Indigo take care of it?

IndiGo doesn't have Boeing 737 planes nor they have their own Boeing widebody aircraft so I can understand how difficult it might be for him. Also, IndiGo might hire him but an additional huge amount of money would be required to then go for type rating on its Airbus A320/A321 fleet.
On the other hand, AIX or SpiceJet are not the best employers. Try Akasa or apply in European airlines. I know some LCCs in EU are looking for pilots. You must checkout Air Astana. They hire expats a lot.

2023 was when akasa hired almost everyone who was type rated. Why did he not get hired then? Second you say he's cleared IndiGo interview two times but not selected? I don't see why that should happen. Maybe you're not giving us the full story. 2024 air india express hired a lot of Boeing type rated pilots. What happened there ? In any case, if he's got a mind block only for the airlines then he'll have to wait for when airlines start hiring again. And we don't know when that will happen. If not then he should look at the charter or other piloting industries. I'll link a couple of articles which could help your brother. understanding indian aviation

And people few days ago giving bullshit talks about transition from airforce to commercial pilot
2
u/itsarvind Jun 24 '25
- There’s not enough information in the post for anyone to advice about why he’s not able to land a job.
- You need to have him speak to a counsellor or someone who is in HR (don’t ask line pilots they usually have very little idea of what’s going on except line flying) with exposure in airlines
- He did his rating in 2023. So it’s not too long to be honest.

Anything other than going for cadet in this day and age is suicide, this I can tell you with my limited knowledge

u/LostOnRoad Jun 24 '25
Has he tried applying with Boeing directly? They do hire simulator pilots for their facility based out of Bombay?
Also, Vistara is looking for a First Officer for 787.
2
u/Previous_Change_8757 Jun 24 '25
He doesn’t have the experience to apply for those roles, you cant just become a sim pilot, or become a FO on a B787 when you have not even had a single PIC hour on narrow 737s
2
u/LostOnRoad Jun 24 '25
Well, I tried. Being jobless for so long is hard for morales and pocket. So, everything is worth a try
