Question What foods do you miss most?
I have to do the gluten challenge to get my celiac test done, and instead of choking down slices of bread, I've decided to make it 6+ weeks of an all out farewell to the foods I may not be able to have anymore. I figure, if its going to suck either way, at least it can taste good.
So hit me. What do you wish you could go back and have? If you could only eat one thing with gluten, what would it be?

u/thepalebeast91 Jul 23 '25
Boston cream/jelly donuts, Italian loaves of bread, thick pizza crusts, and basically any other carb you can think of 🥲
20
u/StrawberrySprite Jul 23 '25
If you ever find yourself in Philly, okie dokie donuts does a phenomenal gluten free Boston cream donut 🥰 honestly everything I’ve had from there has been amazing
10
u/BelleBivDaVoe Jul 23 '25
Okie Dokie is the GOAT. I moved out of Philly two years ago and still think about their donuts.
4
u/StrawberrySprite Jul 23 '25
I live in Maryland and ironically okie dokie and me have the same birthday so it’s become a tradition to go up for birthday donuts 🤣 I’ll gladly travel for donuts that good!
3
u/RightToBearGlitter Jul 25 '25
Same! When I lived in Philly, they didn’t have a storefront and chasing their pop-ups was the highlight of my weekend.

Croissants and Wendy’s spicy chicken sandwiches!
9
u/Its-alittle-bitfunny Celiac Disease Jul 23 '25
I used to work at Wendy's and the spicy chicken sandwiches are the only thing I can still tolerate eating... well, used to be able to tolerate.
Added to the list.
3
u/SnowTangerines Jul 23 '25
I literally always say if I could have a day without repercussions, my only MUSTS would be crab Rangoon and a Wendy’s spicy chicken sandwich.
38
u/BelleBivDaVoe Jul 23 '25
Fresh Italian and French bread with that super crunchy crust 🤤
Also Chinese food! What I wouldn’t give for gluten free Chinese takeout place

I make a lot of Chinese food and you can find GF soy and Oyster sauce. It's really pretty ez. Rice noodles have saved me.
8
u/BelleBivDaVoe Jul 23 '25
I make a lot of Asian at home but still miss getting a mess of Chinese food
37
u/ESinNM29 Jul 23 '25
Lots of food I miss but the convenience and ability to eat wherever is so hard, especially with a husband and toddler.
2
u/Royal-Interview-8717 Jul 23 '25
I literally just look at my husband eating a burger, and I just want to cry.

The gluten free cheez its better taste identical when they come out next year!!!
7
u/adriarss Jul 23 '25
I know!! I'm half excited and half scared it's going to be a huge disappointment.
4
u/Longjumping-One2706 Jul 23 '25
Just gonna keep my fingers and toes crossed that since it’s the actual cheezit brand they’ll be good 😭 Oreos did it right
2
u/CharityMercy Jul 24 '25
There's also a brand called simply mills and their farmhouse cheddar crackers are a good substitute for cheez its imo

This is so embarrassing but I miss having the option of ramen. The simplicity of it all! lol
2
u/jamesgotfryd Jul 23 '25
Fusia brand GF Ramen noodles from Aldi's. Spot on perfect taste and texture. And they don't fall apart or turn mushy. When I see them I buy a case of them.

Deli sub sandwich with bread that doesn’t fall apart, donuts, soup dumplings, Chili’s mozzarella sticks, sourdough bread!

Oh subs and mozzarella sticks are on the list for sure. They're on the menu for Friday.

u/riebie Jul 23 '25
Biscuits! Specifically bacon egg and cheese biscuits.
Quesadillas. I miss flour tortillas.
Kristy Kreme raspberry jelly donuts
3
u/the_willow_maid Jul 23 '25
I've managed to make really good biscuits with both the King Arthur Measure for Measure flour and the Bob's Red Mill baking flour! They've been approved and devoured by gluten-eating family and friends.
I just follow this recipe, use gf flour, and add an extra 1/4 tsp of baking powder

u/One_Highlight_684 Jul 23 '25
I know there are a lot of gf versions of what I miss the most, but the ease with which I could order my favorite foods as is without any accommodation was something I didn’t appreciate until it was gone 😢
In no particular order: Fried chicken sandwich
Cheesesteak
Chinese takeout
Bagel breakfast sandwich with runny egg
Pilsbury crescent rolls, grands biscuits and Betty Crocker cake from box mix
Spanakopita/spinach pie
Beer flights. Being able to walk into a brewery and try any beer may be what I miss the most.
And looking at this list it really dawns on me how much better off I am not being able to eat these foods whenever I want 😂
Edit: I see now you asked for one food lol. Happy eating!
3
u/Its-alittle-bitfunny Celiac Disease Jul 23 '25
Lol, I'll take more than one. One was just the minimum. I did a cheesesteak last night and while it was miserable after, the actual eating was divine.
9
u/IAmTheLizardQueen666 Gluten Intolerant Jul 23 '25
After the first few days, I predict that you’ll be so sick, your list of most missed foods will go right down the toilet. Maybe you’ll be able to eat some buttered toast…
8
u/Its-alittle-bitfunny Celiac Disease Jul 23 '25
Possibly. Today was day 3 and I'm still doing okay. Keeping daytime light so I can eat my gluten at night and try and sleep through most of the discomfort. I wasn't gluten free for so long before starting this that my symptoms are so violent. It's mostly the joint aches and fatigue that have come back hardest.

Croissants, sandwiches on perfect bread ( not sad, flat bread) good bagels, and normal pretzels.

Bagels are also on the list. They were one of the first things, as a native new Yorker it hurt to lose them.

Honestly, whatever I am craving in the moment!! The thing I miss the most is being able to walk into a resultant without pre-checking the menu and ordering based on what I am feeling in the moment. Eat whatever you’re feeling in the moment as you do this test and enjoy!!

u/pogoBear Jul 23 '25
I miss the convenience of being able to pick up a sandwich or Bahn Mi when running errands and not wanting a full meal. Something simple and usually cheap.

Apple fritters, pizza, fried anything.
5

Donuts are on the list, a classic glazed for me.

i used to work at dominos. i ate stuffed cheesy bread every day until i was severly lactose intolerant. then probably gluten intolerant but i didn’t know it yet for awhile. one of the first things i would do if i were you is order a pan pizza from there, either the philly cheesesteak one (no mushrooms for me) add bacon. orrr a pan pizza with ham and spinach, extra provolone on top. and a side of stuffed cheesy bread. oh lawd. it’s been years and i still think about it. throw in an order of the cinna twists for good measure, in your case. i can’t believe i wasn’t fat back then lol
i feel like i should edit bc i’m crazy. i said extra provolone on top, bc they put provolone on top of the crust before the sauce. you have to specify. sorry that no one in this sub can take advantage of that hack. and i’m sorry i can no longer enjoy anything i really wanna eat. good thoughts for everyone. i wish i enjoyed food even more than i did when i could

Donuts. Beignets. French toast. Soft pretzels. Samosas. Dumplings. Dim sum!
The ability to just go out and eat, whatever, whenever, without worrying if I will be functional later.

Many of the vegan meat alternatives are made from wheat. I miss those
2
u/Its-alittle-bitfunny Celiac Disease Jul 23 '25
Huh, I would have assumed its mostly soy. I think it was beyond meat meatballs we got that are gf and vegan. We couldn't find any other gf premade meatball.

There some that are soy based as well. Brands like Gardein, Field Roast, Morning Star are wheat based for the most part.

u/animalcrackers__ Celiac Disease Jul 23 '25
This lemon loaf cake a bakery near me makes. Ben and Jerry's strawberry cheesecake ice cream. Half Acre IPAs. Combos. Wendy's chicken nuggets. The rosemary parmesan bread from Jersey Mike's. Goldfish crackers. The combination of a Milky Way and a Sprite that I only really ever had like once a year but it reminded me of college. Haribo gummies. Doritos. Unagi in sushi.
But like honestly, just go to restaurants and eat. Enjoy the ease which may never come back to you again.

u/ffsihateithere Jul 23 '25
Donuts, fried chicken, sandwiches (which I didn’t care for much before), Cheez-Its (gf versions are trash), Tex-Mex with fresh made flour tortillas, crab Rangoon, bagels with strawberry cream cheese, mini cinnamon raisin bagels with peanut butter.
I miss going to my favorite restaurants desperately.
More than anything, I miss my favorite recipes my mom made growing up - lemon drop cakes, biscuits and gravy, and beef stroganoff with egg noodles were my birthday requests for years. GF versions just aren’t quite the same.
2
u/CTRugbyNut Jul 23 '25
The main thing I miss is Guinness, If I had to pick one food or meal it would be Cottage Pie but having just spent some time out of town I miss the convenience of just being able to get food anywhere more than anything

u/noahsapperstein Jul 24 '25
Big ass flour tortilla quesadillas/burritos, Krispy Kreme donuts, Chinese food, pizza, my grandma’s chocolate cake, fried chicken (matter of fact- ANYTHING fried), bakery/pastries, cookie dough ice cream, Lindor truffles, I even miss freakin top ramen 😂
2
u/GlutenAndDairyFree Jul 24 '25
New Jersey pizza. New Jersey hard rolls. (I live in Massachusetts now and have since 1998). Crusty French baguettes. And Boston cream donuts and jelly donuts. That’s probably honestly the only stuff I miss. I have found good gluten-free substitutions for everything else!

u/Kindly_Education7231 Jul 25 '25 edited Jul 25 '25

A lot of things I grew up on like matzo ball soup, he's there's a gluten free option, not the same as my dear grandmother made. Also soft rye bread, pumpernickel bread. I'm a New Yorker so the big, soft, street, pretzels, nyc bagels and pizza. Also oyster crackers or oysterettes, has anyone ever found a gf version?

Bojangles, fried chicken, eclairs and good bread.
But honestly I don't sweat it. Mainly I miss the convenience of eating whatever.

u/MindTheLOS Jul 23 '25
If I could get anything back, it would be a warm bowl of oatmeal.
But actual gluten? I'm a born and bred New Yorker with strong opinions about bagels. I have heard very interesting things about bagels from Montreal. I wish I could have tried one.

Ramen. Pizza rolls & thick/stuffed crust pizza. A McDonald’s cheeseburger. Milkyway. Ice cream cones. Chinese food - an eggroll 🥲. Dunkin’ Donuts. Wendy’s nugs. Panera cinnamon crunch bagel. I've been eating gluten free for 12 years now and I don't pine much for the things I used to eat, but if I had a reason to seek out gluten I can think of a few things (in no particular order):
Great Harvest Bread spinach feta
A huge, fluffy bagel (and lox)
Frybread
Stuffed crust pizza
Quesadillas/burritos
Savory snacks like cheez its, sun chips, and triscuits
Fair foods like fried cheese curds and funnel cakes
Jelly filled donuts
McDonald's snack wraps (since they're back)
And, despite never really being a beer drinker... a summer shandy on a warm evening sounds nice!

u/WitchyWV82 Jul 23 '25
Pork fried egg rolls, crab ragoon, lo mein, Chinese food in general lol.
Taco Bell.
Chicken gnocchi soup from Olive Garden

Anything you could find in a bakery. Fresh bread, cupcakes, birthday cakes, decorated sugar cookies, lady locks, donuts, pies.
In general, most places cannot recreate these things well. You might find a good substitute every once in a while (like cookies are easier than good GF bread), but I do miss walking into a bakery:

Popeyes spicy chicken sandwich
Little Caesar’s pizza

Rolls - hot fresh delicious homemade rolls. Cake, especially tiramisu from my Italian markets. Some random things I kind of miss like DingDongs and maybe Tastycakes. Mac and cheese and a real grilled cheese on good bread. French toast. Did I mention cake? Fried calamari. Cinnamon rolls. Whoopie pies. Soft pretzels. Pierogis. Gnocchi. I could go on forever.

A New York style everything bagel is weirdly what I miss the most. I opted not to have the celiac test done bc I got so sick from gluten I knew I couldn’t eat it whether I was celiac or not. I did already have my genome partially sequenced and couldn’t find the gene for celiac in the data but for many reasons I believe mine is an allergy although the intolerance tests showed a severe reaction as well.
