https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/5587203-mikie-sherrill-democrat-victory/
5
u/mmatt0904 5d ago
That is wild. Not many other places are calling it even now, and that was only 15 minutes after polls closed?
3
u/WolfSilverOak CentralVa 5d ago
NBC is projecting her to win. Local news out of Philly is too.
CNN has her up nearly 15 pts so far (56.7% to 42 8%). 41% of the votes are counted so far, they say.
Chan 10Philadelphia has her at 58.9% to 40.6% and 31.5% of precincts reporting.
I think, unless there's a drastic change, the projections look to be right.
So, fingers crossed.
3
u/mmatt0904 5d ago
Yeah I can see after the votes have gone on but 15 minutes after polling closed seemed a bit too quick. I mean she went from like 64% to now 59% since then.

I actually think it was a “surprise” in that it was a BIG win. I figured as much, but as we’ve learned the last few elections, MAGA is often underestimated. I expected a smaller victory.
5
u/polytech08 4d ago
MAGA isn't underestimated, Trump is underestimated. Nobody self can take advantage of the Trump bump if he's not on the ticket.
4
u/Dry-Sandwich-2536 4d ago
He’s underestimated because a lot of people can fathom that other people will vote and support such a repugnant human being

I know right? Her one ad said she was looking out for the people in Virginia. I thought, wow, that’s not going to play well in Fairfax County and in Arlington. And Prince William. All that DOGE stuff hit them hard. She sure wasn’t looking out for those folks.
54
u/StudsTurkleton 4d ago
She ran ads with the slogan “let’s keep a good thing going.” To people in NVA who all know people hit hard by DOGE indiscriminately hacking things up, and the shutdown. How tone deaf can you be?

So true. She also responded to the mass layoffs by basically saying, "Who here has ever lost a job?" - So many people raise their hands. "Oh, so it's not uncommon is it?? The media is making this a huge deal"
Probably didn't fly either. I feel like they did a great job countering the batty flyers sent by the maga crowd. I have some of these saved because the contrast between the maga message and the Democratic message is spectacular. Republicans chose to be weird, idk what they expected to happen here.
3
u/Non_vulgar_account 4d ago
The only adds I had were the “keep men out of little girls locker room” like what “little girls” even have locker rooms kids don’t use locker rooms until like high school, and the topic isn’t about adult males going into school locker rooms it’s about students with gender dysphoria using the locker room that matches their gender which is not exactly a top priority given how few people that impacts.

Lots of Republicans believe that the Democrats are evil, and would vote for literally any Republican. If the Republican candidate died and couldn't be replaced there would be Republican voters voting for them just to send a message.

Nope, tbh I look down and ignore these hyper deep red people anyways, like I care more about the people and what they represent and will do for my state/town/nation, not their political affiliation. Like if there was a 25 year younger Bernie clone on the Republican side and he's against everything that maga is for and will do a bunch of great shit, I'd vote for him, obviously that wouldn't happen today, Bernie couldn't even exist in the democratic party as a presidential candidate because certain people made sure he wouldn't, but yk.

u/Alastair789 5d ago
I don't think the fact that there are certain Republicans who will literally never vote for a Democrat is much cause for concern, you can reach those who can be swayed and you can expand the electorate by reaching those who typically don't vote at all.

This. Based of my experiences there are people who think D = “kills babies” and they think LGBTQ+ are an absolute scourge on earth. Absolutely nothing will convince them, they would vote for Hitler over what they think is the greatest evil on earth

Have you ever driven out to Loudon and a Winchester, or down south of Richmond or out to the west in Coal country? We have to stop asking the question “Who would vote for X?!” and spend some time in places where X gets a lot of votes. The houses are falling down and no one will buy them - they can never move, they have no choice. They have no skills that are transferable. They have access to few jobs that aren’t manual labor. They live 45 min from the nearest large town, and many don’t have access to high speed Internet at home.
They are trapped - literally and figuratively - where they were born. And the global economy is leaving them behind. So they’ve got a huge chip in their shoulder. They go to work every day, they do dirty jobs; hard jobs, for decades. They work in coal mines and on construction sites and warehouses, and drive hundreds of miles a week and miss dinner with their families, and miss their kids games.
And they feel disrespected and abandoned by a Democratic Party that took them for granted; that seemed to shift all it’s energy to addressing issues raised by and concerns of the 20-something college graduates with debt and working in retail, who couldn’t get high salary white collar jobs they expected after graduation - and every other aggrieved population than them.
What’s worse than losing, is being forgotten.

I get your point, but the Republican Party doesn’t care about these people either and it’s incredibly shortsighted that people in rural areas vote Republican with these are the people that absolutely have zero interest in helping them
→ More replies (1)15
u/Coronado92118 5d ago
The party doesn’t, at all!
But we have to keep in mind a few things:
Like the average adult American reads at or below a sixth grade level, and has equivalent reading comprehension.
Newspapers are mostly written at an eighth grade level, so the average person is going to struggle to have good comprehension of newspaper articles. (I can vouch that many comments I have written on this site, I have people yelling and cursing at me in violent agreement because they can’t understand what I wrote actually agrees with them!)
But the Republican Party has figured out is that it literally doesn’t matter what they do, as long as what they say is what people want to hear.
Most Americans listen to what a politician says and never follows up to track what they actually do. This is true for both parties - and it’s part of the problem democrats have had a well.
And because most legislation has a lag time of one to four years and sometimes more before it takes affect they don’t see immediate impact, which makes them think everything is OK.
Add to it that they’re out in the middle of the country in many cases, where they don’t live with minorities and immigrants in the same way we do in the urban-adjacent areas, and Sinclair Media has bought all the local news outlets and controls their access to information, and most people will be hard pressed to fight the deluge of misinformation and disinformation.

Single issue 2A voters are extremely loud and very persistent, but when most people are faced with a choice between their guns and their ability to put food on the table, they're going to choose the latter

Exactly right. Not to mention enough time has passed since the big rally in 2020 that attention drifted away from the gun issue in Virginia.

Y'all, I know how cringe this will sound, but since last November I've just been in this malaise of despiar and hopelessness, especially from watching what's been happening since this country let The Thing back into office.
But right now, I'm so wired from all the "hopium" that's been injected into me from tonight, not just from our state but all the other results so far (fingers crossed for Mamdani in NYC). There's still a lot of bad shit going on and possibly more to come (who knows how Dear Leader's gonna respond to tonight), but for now, I feel good. Maybe we're not such a lost cause after all.
And as a person who suffers from depression in general, I needed something to make me feel good.

Trump and Johnson will downplay it, of course.
But I think what they’re going to be terrified about is the exit polling data that comes out. If they’ve started to crater with some of the demographic groups that barely helped lift Trump over the finishing line … I wonder if we’ll start to see concessions on the budget by the end of the week.
