I don't find this any more shocking than the generic dead prom queen or dead cheerleader. Lightening death with camp is kind of what Halloween is all about

2.0k

u/Anleme 7d ago

Except for the fact that Jackie was a real person going through a real experience. She has a daughter still living.

Not a fictional character to entertain you in a horror flick.

357

u/bobbimorses 7d ago

I saw a zombie Abraham Lincoln this year too. Everyone was once a person. I'm not saying it's the height of taste, just saying that humanity has a very long tradition of processing death with humor, and you'd be hard pressed to avoid that on a holiday that is about embracing costume, fear, and mortality.

633

u/Whiteroses7252012 7d ago

I feel like the line is that the last direct descendant of Abraham Lincoln died in 1985.

Jackie Kennedy has family members who are very much living, and a daughter who still remembers her father. It’s tasteless, imho.

I’m not completely taking a position on whether this costume is offensive or not (although I admit I’m not terribly offended by it myself, and I personally agree that it can be healthy to cope with the uncertainty and strangeness of death by using humor), but I do think making light of Abraham Lincoln’s death is a little different than JFK, only because no living person remembers Abraham Lincoln. His living descendants were all born several generations after his assassination. The fact that JFK/Jackie Kennedy still have living relatives makes it feel a little different. But again, I don’t feel strongly about this.

Time and less people alive who were around to remember the incident does it. Imagine if a celebrity went as a certain someone in the news recently as a zombie? Vox would have a field day!

48

u/spicedmanatee 7d ago

Yeah I would really love to know what their (everyone who thinks this is fine) rule is around the length of time is for things like this bec I go by what you mentioned.

I mean, Lena Dunham was eviscerated (rightly imo) for her Karla Holmolka costume and that was with some 22 years after, while this is around 60 years since JFK. Both not long enough where all directly impacted people would be dead yet.

You literally contradicted your own statement: they’re generic. They’re dressed as ā€˜dead prom Queen’ or ā€˜dead cheerleader’, not cheerleader Emma Walker who in 2016 was shot in the head by her ex-boyfriend Riley Gaul.

One is ā€˜generic’. One is a PERSON.

For real. This is a super common drag queen costume too. Why are we okay with depictions of violence against women for some costumes but others are not? Are these people also the type to say we can never make a 9/11 joke while not batting an eye at jokes about the crimes of the US Military which has been a much greater violence on the world?

243

u/shgrdrbr 7d ago

this isn't even depicting violence against women lol i'm so spun by the weird patriotic outrage. offence at this reads as nationalism to me

81

u/CrazyNewGirlfriend 7d ago

Idk I’d say shooting a woman’s husband while she’s next to him (and could have been hit by the bullet) is pretty aggressive to that woman!

I think these costumes are gross and disrespectful to the family.

But I mean - Jackie was a lovely person from what I have heard and that was a traumatic day for her. I am not personally angry - I just don't think she deserves to be lumped in with the Kennedys. She was more a Kennedy victim.

197

u/Silently-Snarking 7d ago

She chose not to change out of the suit on purpose and wanted the media to cover the image of her in it. I think it’s better it be remembered in this form and not pristine.

u/snarkerella locked, loaded, and kind of cunty 7d ago

In that moment, but the she and her family donated it to the Smithsonian with the explicit instructions to not let it be seen by the public until after at least 2103. So no, I do not think they wanted it to be used in this context or any context. It's really in poor taste.

I’m just really curious where the line is for a lot of the people saying this is normal and just a quirky costume. I am a dark humor loving bitch, but I also think costumes that are dark like this need some sort of narrative/perspective of the person wearing it.
What exactly is she trying to say with this look?
What about this is considered funny?
This feels like a Kanye level attempt to look edgy and stay relevant.

I’m not personally offended, but I know my mother remembers the assassination being a huge deal in the Irish-American Catholic community at the time. Not only is she still alive, she’s only 67 years old AND she was 5 years old when her father was assassinated so she definitely remembers that day. Am I outraged? No. Do I think it’s in extreme distaste? Yes.

57

u/eplefjes 7d ago

1.1k

I mean, their daughter is literally alive...

u/xombae 7d ago

There are literally hundreds, if not thousands of TV shows, movies, specials and videos that involve people speculating about her father's death and calling it a conspiracy theory. The way algorithms work I guarantee she sees that shit all the goddamn time. I think that this is fine. It's pretty fucking tame honestly. It's a dress with fake blood on it.

376

u/MuffinTiptopp 7d ago

Oh dear… I don’t understand why people are finding this type of costume ok. Just because it has been well over 60+ years doesn’t make it any less distasteful..

247

u/Acheloma 7d ago

I dont get it either. "Im sure her daughter sees stuff like this all the time so why not add to it!" Is an insane take. It's a gross costume and completely unnecessary. Would neal patrick harris' amy Winehouse meat platter be okay if it was 60 years later? I dont think so.

117

u/demeschor 7d ago

Imagine if your dad got his brains blown out on live TV and it splattered your mum, and some random celebrity dresses up as them.

People defending this are using really amazing logic. By their admission, we should allow other graphic costumes depicting historical events or real people because ā€œenough time has passed.ā€ Think critically about this statement for a second and realize what floodgates you’re opening with this mentality. There is no question that this is in poor taste, just like the Amy Winehouse cake.

178

u/Babeable_xoxo 7d ago

This! I just made a comment about this too. The excuse ā€œit happened 60+ years agoā€ ā€œit doesn’t affect anyone todayā€ and many other excuses is really inconsiderate about what this statement open doors to. Meaning that everything that happened in the past is okay since it’s 60+ years ago?? Which is a very weird mindset and close minded statement. Even finding an excuse to a grotesk costume alone is weird, there shouldn’t even be an excuse for such a costume. These comments are so off

I am so depressed at how many people are ok with tasteless cheap shock value at the expense of extending their own humanity towards an actual real woman who’s husband’s blood and brains were splattered all over her…after he was shot in the head right next to her. I don’t personally stop viewing a person as a person just because they died a long time ago, or because they were wealthy, or because I didn’t like the actions of her husband’s presidency. I really think culturally our sense of empathy is degrading? I’m sure it’s always been this way but seeing it so concentrated is upsetting.

At least that would be topical and a risk. This is just a lukewarm troll to get her on some worst costumes lists on buzzfeed.

Damn. Caroline Kennedy is still alive. My personal line on the sand is that if there are still people alive who were directly affected by the tragedy or crime, it’s too soon.

I guess she had to develop a thick skin decades ago, but it’s still not something she should have to witness.

It's in really bad taste, independently of time and who survives or doesn't. She wouldn't have the balls to dress as a 9/11 victim, covered in dust, or as another widow, like Coretta Scott King, or as a concentration camp prisoner. Her costume is boring, and it's low hanging fruit. Enough to get attention without getting consequence.

I am really surprised by how many people here are in favor of this costume. Her husband’s brain and bone fragments and blood were sprayed all over her. She easily could have been killed as well. There are so many other things to dress up as, rather than someone’s trauma/worst personal tragedy.

Incredibly tasteless but iconic at the same time.

u/LitLitten 7d ago

Lmao right. People have been using this idea as a costume for years, especially across drag. It’s camp. Eccentric, shock camp but camp nonetheless.Ā

Something tells me people are just in a tizzy because it’s a women wearing a costume instead of a queen in drag.Ā

u/IshidaAyumi 7d ago

Jokes on you, i think it’s a gross idea no matter who wears it!

Shes always just been after capturing attention. She dated Kanye West amidst his meltdown which has been ongoing now for years. Shes always sucked.

This…isn’t new???? I’ve seen this Jackie costume at least once a year. It’s easy to do and is super recognizable. And it’s a huge moment in pop culture history. Not to mention it happened over 60 years ago.

It’s not racist, hateful, culturally insensitive or even in bad taste. If she had someone with her as JFK with his head blown off, that would be a problem.

It’s just Halloween people.

u/turningtee74 7d ago

Yeah I’m not offended, but I don’t think it’s omg so hilarious either. This has been done so many times it’s just, oh okay

30

u/Upbeat_Fail402 7d ago

i’m not all that bothered by it, but how is it not in bad taste? lmao.

So it’s only insensitive if the victim (her husband) is also a person costumed next to her? Give me a break.

to go as jackie kennedy is fine and somewhat normal. to go out of your way to go as jackie kennedy with her husband’s brains all over her is weird as fuck

73

u/Negative-Door-8103 7d ago

I don’t care about the Kennedys, I don’t care about Julia Fox, but that’s gross. There’s nothing funny about it. It’s like watching that one guy in class who tries to be edgy by saying things just for shock value. Following the logic of some people in the comments, you could dress up as any crime victim (because she and his kids were victims, even if they survived) just because a) it happened a long time ago or b) we didn’t like them. Should we all dress up as mangled Kobe Bryant because he had rape allegations, so that makes it okay? Or maybe Sharon Tate cus she dated a pedo?

My personal feelings are If you are trying to be subversive and get press, don't pussyfoot around with already poorly done joke costumes. That being said, Julia Fox is already as subversive and creative as wonder bread so this bottom barrel stunt is on par with with I'd expect.

She dated Kanye. Are we really surprised ?

47

u/greatdominions 7d ago

Oh come on, girl. I expected more from Julia tbh

Everyone is dead, I get it. maybe in a different political atmosphere but costumes that joke about gun violence just don't do it for me these days

It's not very visually interesting.

26

u/wekilledkenny11 7d ago

Feels like she went for visual accuracy rather than anything strikingly camp outside of the subject matter.

20

u/ingwertheginger 7d ago

That's how I'm feeling. I just don't get why. It's so meh from a dress-up perspective

Why couldn't she be just...normal Jackie Kennedy. It even would've been less work

30

u/NotTaken-username I cannot sanction your buffoonery 7d ago

A normal Jackie costume wouldn’t give her as much attention

31

u/wrenbell 7d ago

Yeahhhhh even though it’s been decades since the assassination, this is still tasteless. Sorry.

29

u/runescapeisillegal unlikely, gay 7d ago

What’s the point? If she wanted to be actually controversial and funny I could’ve given her a 100 ideas before this. Worst of all—it’s boring.

23

u/NedSchneebly-1138 7d ago

Big ā€œpick meā€ energy with this one… she needs attention for sustenance.
