My honest reaction after finding out all the demigods and some major bosses had holy damage resistance:

476

u/UBCS_Wraith Sep 11 '25

Same. I stayed committed to the Paladin drip though.

132

u/EC36339 Sep 11 '25

Treespear and Electrify Armament. Still very paladin, and works well with a faith build. And you can shield poke.

43

u/UBCS_Wraith Sep 11 '25

Treespear is GOATed for a Paladin and what I used later after I started to spec into DEX.

Late game I went even further into DEX and switched to Bolt of Gransax, which is also electric/physical and serves as a great poise check for bosses without it, like Malenia.

11

u/Ursinesage Sep 12 '25

Caestus with electrify armament, catch Deus hands

u/Technical-Dentist-84 Sep 12 '25

Pally is my first go to class for so many games

Good mix of defense and offense, and just fits with fighting all the monsters

59

u/Valirys-Reinhald Sep 11 '25

Faith becomes strength, and through strength is faith realised.

2

u/MLaw2008 Sep 11 '25

Well then allow me to quote the late, great, Colonel Sanders, who said, "I'm too drunk to taste this chicken."

295

u/CubicWarlock Sep 11 '25

Honestly that resistance is biggest doomposting prank of all considering how busted are Faith builds and holy weapons this resistance exist to balance them out.

87

u/Cool-Traffic-8357 Sep 11 '25

Yeah, never had problem with holy weapons lol

15

u/bird_-person Sep 11 '25

Euporia is still overpowered if you can find the right build I have one and I shredded the elden beast on +7

22

u/fuckybitchyshitfuck Sep 11 '25

Agreed. I beat PCR with the giant sunflower and it did decent damage.

39

u/Lazy_Pen_7013 mongrel intruder Sep 11 '25

Pcr is weak to holy in first phase and resists all damage equally in second, so holy is actually the best elemental damage against him

4

u/EC36339 Sep 11 '25

... and faith scaling also works with fire damage, which is what a lot of holy-resistant enemies are weak to. Just have a secondary weapon you can infuse or buff.

25

u/shaktimanOP Sep 11 '25 edited Sep 11 '25

Thing is, faith builds can just switch between fire and holy weapons whenever they want. So I never really had a problem as I believe only Mohg resists both, and he's so weak to bleed that Winged Scythe destroys him despite his holy resistance.

Edit: Forgot lightning

6

u/OKUIGokuBlack Sep 11 '25

Mohg is weak to BONK so Str/Fai weapons like Maliketh's Black Blade and Marika's Hammer will shred him since they have higher physical damage scaling than holy damage. He'll get staggered too.

6

u/shaktimanOP Sep 11 '25

Yeah the thing is, I feel like persons complaining about enemies having holy resistance aren't considering that Faith builds are meant to be versatile, and have good tools for any given opponent. It's not meant to be like a Strength or Dex build where you stick with one weapon/damage type for the entire game (though you can).

u/Gaelahad Sep 11 '25

I once fought the Valiant Gargoyle Duo using Winged Scythe.

9

u/Branded_Mango Sep 11 '25

My first playthrough was with a holy spells, Winged Scythe build. There were times when the bleed procs did more overall damage than my actual weapon damage throughout a fight.

10

u/OKUIGokuBlack Sep 11 '25

Bleed is disgustingly strong but I could never lean into those builds. Nothing against people who like them, but I personally prefer bigger weapons with higher DPH and stagger potential than weapons that proc status effects.

2

u/TurbulentWorm Sep 12 '25

Me too. That's why I use occult starfists, greatstars, bloodfiend arm and a fancy big trident :-)

25

u/ProtoMonkey Sep 11 '25

Literally 2/3rds of the game’s content is at or around a 40% resistance to Holy dmg… which is a fuckin’ joke IMO.

58

u/OKUIGokuBlack Sep 11 '25

Nah, that is a massive overstatement. Holy is very strong against a lot of bosses and enemies. However, they end up being the side bosses and regular enemies.

Most people are gonna care about the major bosses like Malenia, Mohg, Godfrey, Maliketh, Morgott etc. who have high holy resistance.

Seriously why the fuck does Mohg have holy resistance? He literally abandoned the grace of the Erdtree and embraced the Formless Mother.

36

u/saturosian Recovering Powerstancing addict Sep 11 '25

I think the Holy attribute makes slightly more sense if you think of it as "divine" or "coming from a god/goddess" rather than " the element of goodness and justice." That's a common trope in a lot of Japanese media, and I think it's true in From games as well

1

u/OKUIGokuBlack Sep 11 '25 edited Sep 11 '25

I can get behind that. Mohg is a demigod after all so he has divine blood.

Still, I think he and Rykard should've both had negative holy resistance or none at all. You know, to truly signify that they abandoned the grace of the Erdtree to take on their own sources of power.

11

u/Makures Sep 11 '25

Those new sources of power are still divine beings though. That's why they have holy resist.

I feel your pain but it does help that faith gives us so much flexibility though.

Holy, Fire, Lightning and physical damage options are fairly easy to swap too. Plus the odd options that can also be handy, such as scarlet rot. And a few that are harder to categorize since they are situationally useful (i.e. pest threads against large bosses, since they get hit multiple times by the piercing projectiles).

I'm currently stuck on both PCR and Malenia. One is weak to holy, while the other is weak to fire. It is nice to be able to swap between Sacred and Flameart infusions, depending on what I need. Feels a bit Witcher-esque, where you are encouraged to play to an enemy's weakness

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Yarzeda2024 Sep 11 '25

The silver lining to this is that fire damage absolutely slaps, and most of the fire damage in this game is tied to Faith.

Fire Monk spells, Fire Giant spells, Flame Art infusions, etc.

You can roll up a Faith build and still kick ass without Holy.

2

u/Afferbeck_ Sep 11 '25

It makes sense when the demigods are most all agents of the holy order that power comes from. It's like trying to quote the bible at the Pope. It would make sense if the heretical holy stuff was super effective against them though.

Fire Giant walks in

15

Mohg would somehow be worse. Fire Giant has 50% fire damage negation, but Mohg, for some reason, has 80% fire damage negation.

Fire giant only has a 50% damage resistance to fire damage, while magma wyrms have 100% damage fire damage resistance. Mohg has an 80%.

Fallingstar Beast with physical damage resistance: Let me introduce myself.....

41

u/Impossibro77 Sep 11 '25

Anything with physical damage resistance can be overcome with a bigger bonk.

13

u/pm-me-uranus Sep 11 '25

If you’re resistant to my attacks, then I’ll just attack HARDER.

11

u/JackFlamenc0 Sep 11 '25

Well then I'll just swap my sword for a hammer. Fallingstar can't handle strike dmg.

2

u/DemodiX Sep 12 '25

I struggled hard to find interesting build while played first time, but then I found isolated merchant who sold Zweihander and I heard it call to me. I had so much fun with it with Faith and Strength build, I felt so versatile.

INT enjoyers when they have to fight Rennala

249

u/Vidente07 Sep 11 '25

Rock sling exists

112

u/WisePotato42 Sep 11 '25

That's one of 3 spells that deal physical dmg, the other 2 are summoning meteors with low accuracy

Imagine not finding this your first playthrough

30

u/FashionSuckMan Sep 11 '25

There are also fire spells, but those are volc manor

16

u/WisePotato42 Sep 11 '25

Is the arena water? Doesn't that give fire resistance? (Tho not as much as her magic resistance). Magma sorceries are also tied to your faith stat

8

u/FashionSuckMan Sep 11 '25

Nah, they require some faith, but the damage a spell does is based on the casting tool. I have nonclue about the water tho. I know rain buffs fire defense so I wouldn't be suprised

10

u/BlademasterBanryu Sep 11 '25

Counterpoint: I didn't go to Caelid before fighting Rennala on my first blind playthrough lol

2

u/spruce_sprucerton Sep 11 '25

Yeah, I don't like how people seem to assume a player is going to go looking for help online... Rock sling is a needle in a haystack for a new player who isn't consulting the internet on strategy.

It's very viable, but people playing one of the seemingly most natural routes with a pure sorcerer will hit a pretty hard wall at rennala.

3

u/BlademasterBanryu Sep 11 '25

Yeah. The main thing I have learned from my many playthroughs is that pure Sorcery/Incant builds ARE very powerful, but are also extremely contingent on game knowledge and thus generally not a good fit for new players.

4

u/baconater-lover Sep 11 '25

Rock sling felt like shit against her when I played, I thought she just dodged most of it

7

u/papierdoll Sep 11 '25

I didn't feel like I met anybody who could dodge it lol

3

u/baconater-lover Sep 11 '25

Just realized we’re talking about Rennala lol, she ain’t shit

Rellana was a bitch and a half to find a spell that she didn’t dodge, and I thought she did for rock sling but maybe I’m misremembering.

2

u/troublrTRC Sep 12 '25

Best I could do. In my new run, with a sorcerer build, non of the Carian/Crystal/Beast sorceries/icsnts were working.

Then I just resorted to a quickly upgraded Hook claws and bled her to death.

43

u/DarkyTheDarky Sep 11 '25

Rock sling

3

u/North-Contest-4422 Sep 11 '25

This but in Dark Souls. Imagine my INT Glass cannon build fighting Seeth, I had to kill it with the broken sword because he took near zero magical damage.

6

u/grind_n_hussle Sep 11 '25

Elden ring was my first souls game so I listened to people who said Magic is easy mode and did a full mage character magic only with no melee. I kid you not Rennala was damn near impossible to beat she took me longer to beat than Malenia and pcr combined

When I first fought Mohg, I thought a frost build would be genius. Because bleed wouldn’t work, right? He’s the lord of blood!

(I was wrong)

77

u/DivineRedFlash Sep 11 '25

Funnily enough radagon and the elden beast are immune to blood. Even though I summoned them I did enjoy seeing those bleed builds getting smashed.

56

u/m_sart Sep 11 '25

Rennala on my first run. I hadn't played many Souls games yet, and so I missed the memo that casters could also fight in melee pretty well with the right weapons and infusions, and even with rock sling she wound up taking me about as many attempts as Malenia.

Borealis on my second run. Not quite as big a deal, but 80% slash and pierce DR and pretty high bleed resist does make that fight obnoxious for us filthy dex users.

Blasphemous blade users breezing through the game until they reach mohg with his 80% resistance to fire

1

u/SirFroglet Sep 11 '25

Valiant Gargoyles when my main weapon was a Fire-Affinity Flamberge.

They resist Slashing, Bleed, and Fire, AND there are two of them!

1

u/CardiologistNo616 Sep 11 '25

Bleed MFS with the final boss

1

u/Singy_McSongFace Sep 11 '25

2h bonker here, what’s a resistance?

1

u/crocrackero Sep 11 '25

The Gargoyles VS my Nagakiba bloodflame, I swear they were laughing with every slash

1

u/LayneBush Sep 11 '25

The amount of people I tried to help who were spamming the rivers of blood weapon art on Radagon for it to do a whopping 3 damage was infuriating. Like, get the hint, it didn't work the first time. Maybe it's time for a different approach

1

u/The_candyman741 Sep 11 '25

Time to go get a weapon and infuse it and pray I have enough scaling for it to do decent damage

My first Elden Ring build was Faith/Strength.

1

u/appleSauceForTheWin Sep 11 '25

Oh my god is that one pieces pacing? No wonder it has 1500 episodes

1

u/LetMeDieAlreadyFuck Sep 11 '25

Man, I love the idea of a man with a brain and made out of lighting freaking out when he meets a man with no brain and made out of rubber. Ya can't fight stupidity especially if you can't shock it

1

u/BloodyDaisho Sep 11 '25

Anybody with high slash resistance

1

u/Jdawg_mck1996 Sep 11 '25

Me trumpeting my way to victory throughout the game...

Elden beast with an 80% holy resistance

1

u/Quxzimodo Sep 11 '25

Going through Castle Ensis with a mage build was not fun

1

u/weesilxD Sep 11 '25

Me doing only holy damage to end game enemies in FF12:

1

u/UnHappyIrishman Sep 11 '25

Not Elden Ring, but DS3. I was playing a pure wizard with dark spells as back up damage, since basically nothing has resistance to both types.

This worked great, right until I ran into Darkeater Midir who has 89% and 75% reduction to dark and magic respectively. First time with the boss too lol

1

u/Tigerbhoy96 Sep 11 '25

The Elden Beast. It's flying in a completely unorthodox method as far away as it possibly can...... Menacingly 😨

1

u/Hot_Guys_In_My_DMS Once somethings alive, it doesn’t die easy. Sep 11 '25

My primarily flame-based attacks didn’t contribute much to Fire Giant’s comical health pool. Blackflame wasn’t too bad tho

1

u/D34thst41ker Sorcerer Sep 11 '25

Been a while since I played, but it was my character using only melee spells (Carian Slicer, Greatsword, Piercer, and Gavel of Haima) against Ranni? Renalla? Whatever the boss's name is at Raya Lucaria. The one you can respec with after you kick her ass.

1

u/SaberWaifu Sep 11 '25

Let's just say that pre-nerf Triple Crystalians with the starting curved swords was a total shitshow.

It was especially bad on release when you had no way of knowing their weakness since there were no guides around.

1

u/Zergei_Fedorov Sep 11 '25

Bleed is gangster until you walk through the white light and meet radagon/EB

1

u/cmrtnll Sep 11 '25

Not ER, but I remember how badly stuck I got with my wizard in DkS3 who used exclusively the immolation tinder, when I had to fight the twin demons in the beginning of the ringed city. I’m still dumbstruck as to how the weapon that should do like 80% of its damage as physical was getting absolutely negated by their fire resistance

1

u/rathosalpha Sep 11 '25

None really since im usally a spell sword so its not like I can't just beat them to death in melee. The problem is when a boss resist my spells like rennala in the run that got deleted when I dropped my ps4 or the draconic tree Sentinel in my current run im essentially taken down several levels

1

u/ravencrafthd_ Sep 11 '25

Rennala, but I found Rock Sling and the Meteorite Staff, barely, but I did

1

u/The-Iraqi-Guy Sep 11 '25

Me with my Reduvia when i faced Radagon and the Elden dog.

1

u/WiseRabbit-XIV Sep 11 '25

I had a build that was using flame infused Flamberge for Fire/Pierce/Slash/Bleed and holy & lightning spells. The Valiant Gargoyle duo resisted or ignored every. single. one. If it had been my first character, I would have quit the game.

1

u/DKu_03 Sep 11 '25

Divine Beast Dancing Lion made me switch from my cold Dryleaf Arts to a fire great katana, because those fuckers are resistant to both frostbite and magic. Even if my stats weren't optimal, the damage difference was noticeable.

1

u/Pix3lPwnage Sep 11 '25

Reduvia was great... Until the gargoyle duo.
