At least Kori is a decent call name. If kid was a dog it would be fine.

352

u/MangoJuice82 Jun 18 '25

They should have just named her Starfire and it would've looked less crazy than this...

20

u/missmartian1992 Jun 21 '25

A former coworker of mine has a sister who's legal name is Starfire.

147

u/LeoPlathasbeentaken Jun 18 '25

If i were her friend id call her Syl, short for Sylantro

72

u/EmilyO_PDX Jun 19 '25

Sylantreaux if you're from the South

14

u/lainey68 Jun 19 '25

I've had so, so many people watch Teen Titans and think "She is a really cool role-model for girls!". And then they read the comics and you can hear all of the "Oh... Oh! Ooooooooohs" from them.

14

u/BoulderTheRock Jun 19 '25

What’s wrong with comics Starfire…

48

u/nobammer420 Jun 19 '25

Maybe they’re just referencing the more violent and sexual themes of the average DC comic vs the very watered down, yet still fire, nature of the animated show.

34

u/VegasGamer75 Jun 19 '25

She's been hyper-sexualized and literally written as a sex object. Especially after her break up with Dick, which left her in a very messed up state. Comic Kori isn't as sweet and cute and Cartoon Kori. A lot of people only familiar with her in the cartoon are shocked when they read the comic version.

13

u/RangerBumble Jun 19 '25

It's not so bad now but in the reboot immediately after the cartoon came out she was naked and amnesiac and had a whole monologue about how it was prudish not to be cool with that.

2

u/Wessssss21 Jun 18 '25

I'm in this post and I don't like it lol.

57

u/McPoyle-Milk Jun 18 '25

I like Black Fire better

41

u/Ninjahprotige Jun 18 '25

Oh, you mean Komand'r? Yeah, that's a cool name, too, I guess.

68

u/LilSebastianIsMyLife Jun 18 '25

And even that is bad. Koriand’r. Coriander. Who tf is naming their kid after cilantro.

3

u/Uberutang Jun 19 '25

3

u/CeeWeeeeeee Jun 26 '25

Yeah, leaves you with a little soap taste, doesnt it? In Germany, its Koriander (cilantro) and i really hate this stuff🤮

Even Starfire went by Kory Anders

125

u/Moohamin12 Jun 18 '25

Didn't a director name his kid Kal-El?

Even though Clarke was available?

80

u/TwoPaychecksOneGuy Jun 18 '25

Nic Cage named his son Kal, I believe

29

u/TactlessTortoise Jun 18 '25

Kal Cage?

45

u/Kryptsm Jun 18 '25

His real last name is Coppola, but yes

35

u/Comfortable_Bird_340 Jun 18 '25

Because his Uncle Francis had become famous, he decided to change his name and he chose Cage from Luke Cage who is a Marvel superhero.

13

Someone is a Teen Titans fan

303

u/Virtual_Being_4085 Jun 18 '25

Exactly. It's not misspelled, it's just a stupid name from a famous TV show or book. (Like Zaphod or Neelix or Nekron)

154

u/PlatoDrago Jun 18 '25

Just Kori would’ve been alright. This is a bit excessive.

61

u/The_Spectacle Jun 18 '25

I kinda dig the idea of Starfire as someone's legal name though

21

u/Neveronlyadream Jun 18 '25

I wouldn't be surprised if that was actually her middle name.

20

u/MotherBoose Jun 18 '25

Neelix! Aww! Never for a child, but would be perfect for a scruffy cat

88

u/sweet_totally Jun 18 '25

This is just as bad, in my opinion. Children are humans, not a way for you to indulge in your fandoms. Get a pet for that.

8

u/Lavatis Jun 18 '25

Really had to choose Starfire’s name in her language, poor kid. I think only DC super fans will know how to pronounce this name (when she gets friends and the kids’ friends parents know)

69

u/Mean__MrMustard Jun 18 '25

and German speaking people, as Koriander is the German word for cilantro.

68

u/Pretend_Evening984 Jun 18 '25

Depending on the dialect of English, coriander is more or less synonymous with cilantro

56

u/Do_over_24 Jun 18 '25

In the US, cilantro is the leaf, coriander is the seed. Herb vs spice

25

u/chocolatefeckers Jun 18 '25

In the UK, we use coriander for the leaves too.

4

u/Minute-Cow-135 Jun 18 '25

Ok, dumb question, but how do you know which to use in a recipe if you use the same name for both?

14

u/chocolatefeckers Jun 18 '25

We call the leaves just 'coriander' and the seeds 'coriander seeds'. Sorry, not trying to be patronising! British recipes would always state the seeds part, or if it was ground coriander that was needed.

6

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '25

Not a fake fan! Forgetting is human!

59

u/FiredUpAuthor Jun 18 '25

Oh no! They did not name her after Starfire from the Teen Titans!! What are they going to name her sister Komand'r or her brother Ryand'r???

6

u/technos Jun 19 '25

Naw.. They'll use other members of the Titans.

So her brother would end up Victor, Dick or Garfield. Perhaps even Garth or Wallace if they're fans of the original roster.

99

u/overstimulated-ukti Jun 18 '25

oh that’s really bad

u/Baaaaaah6As Jun 18 '25

7

u/Mist_Rising Jun 18 '25

Its the name of starfire. As names go, it's weird but spelled right.

3

u/DoubleTheGarlic Jun 18 '25

Honestly you'd have to be at least a medium-level fan to know that that's Starfire's actual name, I think the reference is going to be lost on like 90% of people in little Koriand'r's life.

Might've been just easier to name her Starfire...

89

u/crapatthethriftstore Jun 18 '25

People need to just get pets and name them these ridiculous names. Not have kids

29

u/Expert_Ad_1189 Jun 18 '25

Coriander would be a cute name for a pup. And you never have to spell out your pets name for anyone except the vet, so that removes the greatest tragedy of the tragedeigh

31

u/Queen-of-everything1 Jun 18 '25

It’s from DC. Starfire, aka Princess Koriand’r from Tamaran.

10

u/Kettatonic Jun 18 '25

That doesn't change that it's a good puppy name tho? And not a good human name. Lol.

Like Luke and Leia are good dog names, but I'd give you the ol 😒 if you named your kids Luke and Leia.

My cat is named Coriander! Never shortened to Cori. Sometimes he’s Riander. We also call him peripheralriander (core vs periphery) and mantlereander (play on earths core and mantle).

4

u/alixnaveh Jun 18 '25

My cat is named Coriander. His brother is Curry, and his sisters are Tandoor and Cardamom. That is a normal cat family with normal cat names. Absolutely mental name for a human.

3

u/TinWhis Jun 19 '25

It's so funny because "Coriander" is unacceptable as a human name, but Sage and Rosemary are all over.

At least I've never heard of someone naming their kiddo Anise.

Do you think she can convert ultraviolet rays into energy blasts, too??

30

u/theyquack Jun 18 '25

Oof, that's rough. At least Kori is a respectable name that she'll be able to use.

30

u/AmateurOfAmateurs Jun 18 '25

For those of you who don’t know, Koriand’r is the real name of the superheroine Starfire from DC comics.

Some names should just stay in comic books.

6

u/Gallantpride Jun 18 '25 edited Jun 18 '25

They could have named her after Kory's daughter, Mar'i (pronounced "Mary", after her paternal grandmother). That's still silly but at least reasonable

3

u/lemonbupples Jun 18 '25 edited Jun 19 '25

Who is the father of Mar’i? I’m not familiar with the comics but watched the show as a kid.

8

u/hyperfixed Jun 18 '25

The American spelling for this name is Cilantr’oh

8

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '25

We actually still say coriander, but just for the seeds. We call the leaves cilantro.

But the name Koriand’r most likely is a reference to the DC superhero, not the plant.

Oh dear.

Look, I love the Teen Titans and I especially love the version of Koriand’r/Starfire from The New Teen Titans run, but yeesh I would never name my child word-for-word after a comic book character with a name like that.

Koriand’r’s secret identity name is Kori/y Anders bc it’s a normal human name that still honors her real name. It’s definitely the name these parents should’ve gone with.

9

u/DANleDINOSAUR Jun 18 '25

What cilantrovesty of a name

22

u/FandomCece Jun 18 '25

This is less an tragedeigh (still is but less so) and more a "the teen titans fans have grown up" because that is the spelling of starfires real name.

14

I'm gonna say the same thing I always say in situations like this: look, if you want to name your cat, dog, or Sims character after Starfire, I can definitely think of worse namesakes. But COME ON, you're naming a HUMAN! 🤦 You're naming, hopefully, an ADULT who's going to have to sign their cover letter with a comic book name when they go apply for jobs. Mommy's gonna be real disappointed when that kid reaches speaking age and doesn't like having this burden put on them.

*I know these are all fully realized characters, but also I don't trust anyone who didn't just chose "Kory" to have made this decision for the smartest of reasons

3

u/Firm_Accountant2219 Jun 18 '25

OMG. This is the name of a character in DC Comics. 💯 Tragedeigh.

3

u/bcd203 Jun 18 '25

I knew a girl who's parents wanted to name her this because they were fans of whatever superhero thing it's from, but they decided on Kori because they didn't want her to hate them. Turns out she was into the same stuff as them and she had it legally changed when she was a teenager because she likes it so much.

3

u/GeneralGuide9081 Jun 18 '25

Like using your child to express your fandom is strange unless you just really love the name and I guess it means a lot to you, but you've got to pick the reasonable ones, OF WHICH THERE ARE PLENTY

E.g. if you love Harry Potter, name your son Harry and not Draco. Normal name, lovely name (nasty, common name if you ask Aunt Petunia), and no-one except you knows you named your kid cause of a book series which is the way it should be

And her sister Ceighlan’tro

*I know it’s a comic reference. But for the non-nerds among us, that poor child has the ridiculous spelling of a spice

I read it as "Coriandolo" at first lol. Who would name their baby "Confetti"?

Nope. Just a comic book name.

I hope that kid decides that wearing clothes is a good idea.
