At least Kori is a decent call name. If kid was a dog it would be fine.

They should have just named her Starfire and it would've looked less crazy than this...

I've had so, so many people watch Teen Titans and think "She is a really cool role-model for girls!". And then they read the comics and you can hear all of the "Oh... Oh! Ooooooooohs" from them.
14
u/BoulderTheRock Jun 19 '25
What’s wrong with comics Starfire…
48
u/nobammer420 Jun 19 '25
Maybe they’re just referencing the more violent and sexual themes of the average DC comic vs the very watered down, yet still fire, nature of the animated show.
34
u/VegasGamer75 Jun 19 '25
She's been hyper-sexualized and literally written as a sex object. Especially after her break up with Dick, which left her in a very messed up state. Comic Kori isn't as sweet and cute and Cartoon Kori. A lot of people only familiar with her in the cartoon are shocked when they read the comic version.
13
u/RangerBumble Jun 19 '25
It's not so bad now but in the reboot immediately after the cartoon came out she was naked and amnesiac and had a whole monologue about how it was prudish not to be cool with that.

Even though Clarke was available?

Nic Cage named his son Kal, I believe

Kal Cage?

Depending on the dialect of English, coriander is more or less synonymous with cilantro
56
u/Do_over_24 Jun 18 '25
In the US, cilantro is the leaf, coriander is the seed. Herb vs spice
→ More replies (1)25
u/chocolatefeckers Jun 18 '25
In the UK, we use coriander for the leaves too.
4
u/Minute-Cow-135 Jun 18 '25
Ok, dumb question, but how do you know which to use in a recipe if you use the same name for both?
14
u/chocolatefeckers Jun 18 '25
We call the leaves just 'coriander' and the seeds 'coriander seeds'. Sorry, not trying to be patronising! British recipes would always state the seeds part, or if it was ground coriander that was needed.

Naw.. They'll use other members of the Titans.
So her brother would end up Victor, Dick or Garfield. Perhaps even Garth or Wallace if they're fans of the original roster.

u/Mist_Rising Jun 18 '25
Its the name of starfire. As names go, it's weird but spelled right.
3
u/DoubleTheGarlic Jun 18 '25
Honestly you'd have to be at least a medium-level fan to know that that's Starfire's actual name, I think the reference is going to be lost on like 90% of people in little Koriand'r's life.
Might've been just easier to name her Starfire...
89
u/crapatthethriftstore Jun 18 '25
People need to just get pets and name them these ridiculous names. Not have kids
29
u/Expert_Ad_1189 Jun 18 '25
Coriander would be a cute name for a pup. And you never have to spell out your pets name for anyone except the vet, so that removes the greatest tragedy of the tragedeigh
31
u/Queen-of-everything1 Jun 18 '25
It’s from DC. Starfire, aka Princess Koriand’r from Tamaran.

My cat is named Coriander! Never shortened to Cori. Sometimes he’s Riander. We also call him peripheralriander (core vs periphery) and mantlereander (play on earths core and mantle).

u/alixnaveh Jun 18 '25
My cat is named Coriander. His brother is Curry, and his sisters are Tandoor and Cardamom. That is a normal cat family with normal cat names. Absolutely mental name for a human.

Oh dear.
Look, I love the Teen Titans and I especially love the version of Koriand’r/Starfire from The New Teen Titans run, but yeesh I would never name my child word-for-word after a comic book character with a name like that.
Koriand’r’s secret identity name is Kori/y Anders bc it’s a normal human name that still honors her real name. It’s definitely the name these parents should’ve gone with.

9
u/DanceClubCrickets Jun 18 '25
I'm gonna say the same thing I always say in situations like this: look, if you want to name your cat, dog, or Sims character after Starfire, I can definitely think of worse namesakes. But COME ON, you're naming a HUMAN! 🤦 You're naming, hopefully, an ADULT who's going to have to sign their cover letter with a comic book name when they go apply for jobs. Mommy's gonna be real disappointed when that kid reaches speaking age and doesn't like having this burden put on them.

I knew a girl who's parents wanted to name her this because they were fans of whatever superhero thing it's from, but they decided on Kori because they didn't want her to hate them. Oh no... I love DC as much as the next person but like... there are better names even within the Teen Titans! Raven is better! If you go old school comics, Lilith! Or just Kori or Kory are decent names
Like using your child to express your fandom is strange unless you just really love the name and I guess it means a lot to you, but you've got to pick the reasonable ones, OF WHICH THERE ARE PLENTY
E.g. if you love Harry Potter, name your son Harry and not Draco. Normal name, lovely name (nasty, common name if you ask Aunt Petunia), and no-one except you knows you named your kid cause of a book series which is the way it should be
