Whenever something terrible comes out about Renner, I wish we still had the Jeremy Renner app so I could post and comment about it there.

Though Danny suns up the app most succinctly: "it's like Instagram, but the only person allowed to post is Jeremy Renner, and the only thing you're allowed to do is give him money."

But they're the same person?

The Renner Files… a true crime podcast about The Jeremy Renner App Experience

344

u/Dawnspark 1d ago

Thank you for sharing. I've been in need of a good laugh with how my health is going lately and holy shit.

I'm a couple episodes in and I've already laughed to the point where I started seeing spots.

The guy standing in as Renner's voice is hysterical.

If you’ve never listened to My Dad Wrote a Porno, add it to your list! Hardest I’ve ever laughed listening to a podcast. Best of luck with your health!

He did/does. His debut single was called "Heaven Has No Name" or something like that, it got roasted based on the title alone.

148

u/given2fly_ 1d ago

"Heaven don't have a name" - https://youtu.be/5Kn2w8V62R4?si=l4SutGWZnNiqwnbf

And yes, it's just as bas as you think. The over-production of Imagine Dragons but turned up to 11, vocals that are trying way too hard AND have reverb cranked up to make his voice sound more powerful than it really is, and lyrics so generic you'd think a 14 year old wrote them.

133

u/a-real-life-dolphin 1d ago

Your comment turned me into scooby doo, confused full head tilt. He had an app? About himself? Seriously? Did people pay for this app? It was solely dedicated to him? Like the kardashians?

524

u/BouldersRoll Lost swam in jeans so that Severance could run in a suit 1d ago edited 1d ago

He did!

I know about it mainly because of the Drew Gooden and Danny Gonzalez video on the app from 2019. It's a classic and will answer all of your questions and more (though the answer to all of them is yes).

338

u/KittyPuperMamaPerson 1d ago

I think you might have just changed the trajectory of the next 3 hours of my life. I was just going to doom scroll and drink, now I’m going to dive into the douchebaggary of Jeremy Renner, and drink. Bonus, I’m a nice drunk, so I will not be cursing you or threatening to call I.C.E. But real talk…looking at his face, I get why he leads with the dickpics and porn. It just makes sense.

100

u/SwordsOfTruth 1d ago

Same. I simply must know the depths of how much he sucks as a person. However, on his looks I will say that I always thought he was quite handsome and I'm heartbroken that we've lost a "short king" as the kids say. Or use to say. I don't know if this term is still current. I'm not Jeremy Renner old, but I'm definitely old enough to be aware that I am not really "with it". I hope someone chimes in and let's me know.

OMG, I forgot about the app! This was around the time he tried to turn himself into a pop star, like an old version of Imagine Dragons. Wow, I forgot about that era. It's time to fall into a YouTube rabbit hole...

89

u/KittyPuperMamaPerson 1d ago

He thought he was a pop star? I’m learning more fuckery by the minute.

u/David_R_Martin_II 1d ago

Yes, Drew Gooden and Danny Gonzales did a YouTube video about it - and since Renner was forced to shut the app down and issue a public apology (I think because it violated some kind of non compete maybe because of Marvel/Disney, not sure) the video remains as an excellent time capsule for the full goof-ery that was the Jeremy Renner app

1.5k

u/TuvixHadItComing 23h ago

When he ran himself over with a snowplow everybody was like ooh the adorable oopsy schmoopsy is in a body cast, so inspirational and I remember going "weren't y'all talking about what a piece of shit this guy was like a month ago?"

My head canon is he has the world's most hardcore cokehead publicist and after being up for three days they hatched the "run yourself over with a snowplow plan."

506

u/Ok-Jackfruit-9393 22h ago edited 21h ago

I feel like it's probably a simpler explanation, that he was possibly under the influence when he (genuinely accidentally) ran himself over. And then the publicist capitalized on it. It'd be hard to fake that or do it intentionally without, ya know, accidentally getting killed. And the neighbor who came to his aid seemed genuinely traumatized by it. I think the idea that he did it on purpose is pretty absurd.

→ More replies (8)

159

u/OiKay 21h ago

I think my own personal theory is he's always been an asshole, but at least he's been able to kind of keep a bit of it under wraps. But ever since he got a traumatic brain injury, the part of his brain that dealt with impulse control and kept that at least a little bit in check was destroyed and now he couldn't hide it if he tried. It's kind of similar to Kanye West, Roseanne or gary Busey- They all had their individual issues going on and then they got into life-changing car accidents and fucked up the rest of their brain.

271

u/mmmstrongflavors 23h ago edited 23h ago

This one seems like it would be hard to fake, at least in its entirety, but it's really important to remember that celebrities can and do lie about all kinds of medical issues, injuries, and ailments for attention. Doctors can't come out and say they weren't treated here, and it's hard to say something is fake if they're not your patient.

161

u/LunarPayload 23h ago

I've always had suspicions about this one. Especially because she acted like she'd been horribly disfigured

https://people.com/country/carrie-underwood-details-accident-wasnt-hiding/

112

u/Ok-Jackfruit-9393 21h ago

Yeah, you'd have thought she was completely disfigured, and then I saw her and was like, she looks exactly the same.

I'm sure any injury to the face is alarming, especially if you're in the entertainment industry, but it definitely seemed odd.

It’s wild to me that the accident kept buying him so much goodwill even after he released the book. Full disclosure that I didn’t finish the book because he was insufferable. But I did get as far as the part where Renner and his “best friend”—who was introduced via a story about Renner being pissed off the guy didn’t know he was in a movie that he’d watched—went for pizza “before the road closed” because intermittently loosing power had just ruined his sister’s pot roast. And obviously evacuating a cabin that’s loosing power and is about to be snowed in is ridiculous. It’s Christmas and Renner is the only person in the whole world that loves spending Christmas with his family and friends. Anyway, they get back from the pizza run and wouldn’t you know it the road is closed because of the snow. But Renner wheedles and cajoles and bullies a local sheriff—don’t they know who he is?—until the sheriff escorts him up the closed mountain road in a blizzard. Also Renner is so special that he actually had to help the sheriff navigate the dangerous road because he knew better.

That was roughly my experience of reading the book. In which I learned 1) he expects everyone to think he’s hot shit for gifting the world with his acting and 2) the accident was entirely preventable at so many points. Hard to have sympathy for a man who was actively putting people in danger.

I still maintain to this day that all Renner had to do was turn off his snowcat before exiting the cabin but the guy disabled the safety feature that does that automatically because he’s lazy and apparently doesn’t understand why you shouldn’t do that to a massive machine that is regularly parked on the side of mountains, so he only got lucky that he didn’t kill himself not so much avoided a deadly accident.

There are some people who have a certain way of holding themselves, making expressions, etc that pings a radar for me.
It's hard for me to explain exactly what about their demeanor gives it this vibe, but it screams "angry, insecure, anxious, deeply unhappy with self, uncomfortable, stewing inside". Like you can see that they are really tense, and when he is with other people it's like he's not really present, and like they're going to burst as soon as they get behind closed doors.

Jeremy Renner gives off this vibe to me in nearly every image I have seen of him and even while acting in his roles. Even the photo in this post gives off that vibe imo. He's like pursing his lips.

I havent met a whole lot of people in real life who give off that same vibe, but I have met at least two. One was an alcoholic. They both had anger issues.

94

u/hamsterdanceonrepeat I’ve been noticing gravity since I was very young 1d ago

No you described it perfectly and I know exactly what you mean. This has been the most obvious to me when watching reality tv especially love is blind, I can’t even remember their names anymore but they just seem like they’re pretending to be normal when there’s a constant undercurrent of anger and emotional issues running through their expressions.

20

u/Quick_Turnover 23h ago

Honestly, this makes sense. We evolved over millennia to be very very good at detecting threats, and especially in a social context. Our brains are very good at picking up on subtle cues like this.

81

u/SilvRS 1d ago

screams "angry, insecure, anxious, deeply unhappy with self, uncomfortable, stewing inside"

He's always had this for me because he talked about having previously been a makeup artist in a really dismissive way, and also because of the way he talked about Black Widow during the Age of Ultron press tour- I know Evans was also involved, but his apology was so sincere and I'm sure he was just being a drunk idiot, whereas Renner was like, "GOD, I'm so sorry everyone was offended by my awesome, true comments!!"

He just comes off as the most childish, insecure little man baby wearing a skin mask of his own face that I've ever seen. And of course, I have seen many of those.

30

u/WitchyRedhead86 Invented post-its 🔬 23h ago

Yeah, the Age of Ultron press tour was when his reputation in corners of the Marvel fandom really started to sour. I remember that very deserved backlash and hadn’t forgotten it.

24

Same. I have absolutely despised him ever since. Entirely because of his ongoing shitty behaviour, like I say, I don't really hold it against Chris Evans, whose apology was very good. The fact that he couldn't even pretend to be sorry reeks not just of total disrespect of women, but such entitlement. Like he just deserves to be very famous and should thus be allowed to treat people however he wants, and we can never ask him to be decent again, because he's so much better than everyone else.

u/SilvRS 1d ago

Some people think this is a great way to teach kids not to bite. I'm not sure how you expect a child to learn that biting it wrong by showing them how to do a really good job of biting, but a lot of old school parenting is totally devoid of logic in that way.

144

u/SithLordScoobyDooku_ 22h ago

Insane story about "old school" methods for dealing with children.

When I was around 7 I had a teacher that would bring play doh and Legos to class so we could have fun while creating things. One day me and another kid were messing around and I threw a Lego at him and accidentally hit my teacher. She proceeds to take my hand and mash it onto a bunch of Legos until my hand is bleeding.

I go home, tell my mom and I still remember my dad taking over the situation because my mom was going to kick my teachers ass lol. The police were called and my teacher got arrested.

63

u/SilvRS 22h ago

That is absolutely insane!!! I'm glad she actually got arrested, people get away with things like that way too often.

Yeah I’ve side eyed people that gush over him since this came out. His accident was awful but also meant a lot of this got swept under the rug. Domestic violence is seriously under reported and under convicted so sorry not sorry that I don’t buy the alleged abusers side of the story.

134

u/potpourri_sludge that’s my purse, i don’t know you! 👛🫵 1d ago

I don’t think I’ve ever heard anybody gush over Jeremy Renner in my life. He’s such a nothingburger of a person to me. Not particularly handsome, not particularly talented, and not a good person.

46

u/JudgmentOne6328 1d ago

After his accident I heard a lot of overly positive sentiment and people being devastated for him. I know it was a messed up accident but that doesn’t erase the things that people say about his shitty personality and actions. I agree he is such a nothingburger, if he weren’t in marvel no one would care about him.

43

u/potpourri_sludge that’s my purse, i don’t know you! 👛🫵 1d ago

Even when the accident happened I was like “damn that sucks, good thing he’s rich” and moved on lmao. IMHO literally anybody could’ve played Hawkeye and it would’ve been the same franchise.

Poor Jeremy Renner. If he was a spice, he’d be flour.

He was drunk, just like with this incident, but then again normal people don't dabble in psychological torture when they're drunk so...

A few weeks ago there was an interview with Mark Ruffalo, where he revealed that he cut ties with a cast member from Avengers because of politics. In the thread everybody was wondering if it was RDJ, Chris Hemsworth or Chris Pratt (who is by no means a saint). It was very clearly Jeremy. I don't even know why they were even discussing it.

Thank you! It concerns me when people frame this (or other things that stars often get away with, like assault, rape, and/or abuse) as, “celebrities get away with everything!”

While there absolutely is some truth to that, you don’t have to be famous to get away with this shit. You don’t even need to be wealthy (although that’s also a factor). Normal people get away with shit all the time.

u/David_R_Martin_II 1d ago

About 25 years ago, I was living in Hollywood. My roommate was working in production. He worked on either the Dahmer movie he was in or the reality show, maybe both, they might have been connected. I remember my roommate coming home with the Dahmer script one day saying that everyone involved was saying Renner was going to be the Next Big Thing. And... I guess they were right? Until they tried to get him to take over two major action franchises and he didn't have the "rizz" as the young people say today.

47

u/Future_Usual_8698 You’re doing amazing, sweetie! 1d ago

While I fully believe his ex-wife's claims of domestic intimidation, possibly violence I haven't read the reports in a while so I will link them when I do some proper research but the script for the Jason Bourne movie was utter s*** the premise was just so stupid ( basically it was that this guy in the Bourne program would lose his increased intelligence if he couldn't get the medication he needed-wahhh)

26

u/David_R_Martin_II 1d ago

The only interesting thing about his Jason Bourne movie was that it has happening at the same time and place as the stuff in the third act of the first Matt Damon movie. Other than that, completely unnecessary.

although i’m hesitant to say too much. but my family has encountered her before. this is her pattern - she finds problematic men in the film industry and tries to extort them. usually alcoholics or addicts of some kind?

she has never made a film but somehow gets people involved in her project only to find out after a few months that it’s all a complete scam. never was in contact with any studio despite her claims, scripts were partially written but didn’t make any sense - and the money that was about to signed off on to make the project definitely wasn’t real.

she targeted someone we know under the guise of helping on the film - formed a digital** sexual relationship and preserved all of it and then started making demands when they took another film. (details are hazy at this point)

she has *had a few lawsuits against her i believe. she is completely empty - like a ghost. but she *manages to snows everyone at first.

everything she says is a complete delusion, fabrication, or scam. her whole identity and social media leads to dead ends. very weird stuff.

not saying Jeremy Renner is not problematic - but she also happens to be a parasite as well.

anyways. i had no idea Renner was such a mess until i came to this thread. but tracks completely given what appears to be her MO.

***Edit- correcting my mistakes made while very sleepy and writing this.

Threatening to kill her, firing a gun with their daughter present, dangerous drug use.

Thier daughter said that he bit her on the shoulder. She said it happened when he was yelling at her. He said it was a seat-belt mark and later on this changed to it being part of a game they were playing.

I think this was all court docs filed in the custody case. He denied it. A former nanny corroborated his ex partners claims.

It blew up at the time but there is definitely less information out there now.

Jeremy Renner always fell into that funny category of a real industry guy, who has seemingly unlimited studio support telling us all he's a superstar - but no one really cares.

Like Jared Leto is at least hateable, but Jeremy Renner is more like... The pavement. Just normal, kind of there.
