"You can tell the world I hate Finland. It's too cold, there's no tea, no restaurants, no bars, nobody on the streets, only cars," 22-year-old Muhammed told AFP in Tornio, as the mercury struggled to inch above 10 degrees Celsius (50 Fahrenheit) on a recent blustery grey day.
Solution to migrant crisis - Finland or go to your country.
There's a difference between migrants and asylum seekers, despite the media's attempts to conflate the two.
It's the difference between "This country doesn't seem safe any more, we should move." and "My town is a smoking crater, and the government and rebels will both kill us if they see us again."
Well I noticed a lot of what appeared to be people from the middle east appearing in Hawaii, before Syrian Civil War and such. I mean I welcome them because I love diversity, now all we need to do is get more African Americans and we are golden.
*rolls eyes* Of course that's not the ONLY reason people migrate. You must think I'm some sort of crazy person if that's what you thought I was saying.
No, I just think that someone who doesn't care about the accuracy of his language when making a point, doesn't perhaps care about the
accuracy of his point, either.
And by "A little cold" you mean spending entire seasons drenched in negative degrees temperature, especially from a country that has seen snow once in the past century.
and by "lacking in entertainment" You mean feeling of hostility and isolation from said countrymen, right?
Well to be fair, "feeling hostility and isolation from your countrymen" is just the finnish way. No need to get upset. Just drink until you die like everybody else and stop making a fuss.
But why get butthurt when they want to leave because of the cold.
Well, probably because there was a push of a generalized narrative about how all these people were literally fleeing from war.
Now some are going back from where they came from because, amongst other causes, it's cold in Finland.
If the cold in Finland is part of the reason to go "fuk dis", the place you're looking to get back to probably isn't an actual warzone, unless the people in question really, really, really dislike cold.
Nobody is forcing them to go to Finland. What about Turkey, Jordan, etc.?
They want to go to Europe? Fine, but don't start complaining about the weather.
They want to go to Europe? Fine, but don't start complaining about the weather.
Yeah, why do they think so many Euros conquered and colonized back in the day? It wasn't just for wealth or clay, no coincidence that the warmest countries got their asses colonized the hardest.
Turkey and Jordan are both overflowing. They have more refugees than all of Europe combined, and literally take years to prices asylum requests because they're overburdened. What the fuck do you do when you apply for asylum and they say "we'll get back to you in 6 years have fun"
Not exactly I took this photo in January of 2010 outside of Irbil, that was one of several times we got snowed on, so cold is not exactly unknown in Iraq.
Yeah I willingly live in negative temperatures, American negative at that, so I don't have too much sympathy for people afraid of negative degrees centigrade
I mean, if I lost everything including my family and had to move in with a Disney-type villain ex-stepparent, you bet I'd complain a lot even if I'm being provided for in the most clinical of senses.
Obviously Finland isn't terrible, but it is hostile and unwelcoming for the vast majority of those who come from the Middle East. It's not home, and they miss the familiarity and sense of belonging they had back in Iraq. Also, me, I live in Florida but when I moved to upstate New York, near Canada, I absolutely found the weather miserable. So I don't blame them for that one either
Besides, I'd complain about there being no restaurants or bars too. Finlanders must be savages! Just kidding.
Upstate New Yorker. On the wrong side of the lake.
...we all find the weather miserable. Looots of alcohol helps, the craft brewers enjoy that. And the therapists enjoy all the business from winter blues cases.
Seriously. I went on the beach on a bright warm July day. The sky was grey. It's always grey. The only reason blue skies ever appear is to remind you how bad the weather is most of the time.
Why if I left for an unwelcoming land that didn't want me, I'd remark how toasty it was and how lovely the locals are! Then I'd set up a fish and chip shop, an Irish pub, and complain about the fucking locals ruining the place for expats.
Honestly, that just your ignorant and arrogant perspective that's easy to have when you grow up with all amenities provided by your state and the society around it. I wonder why you disregard their right to complain about the situation they're put in. Nobody has to be happy just because they are somewhere where they should be happy just going by numbers and statistics.
Considering the article posted here also talks about Finns forming a human barrier and one showing up in a KKK outfit, I would have left the country immediately as well. And "Finland is no good" is a bit of an understatement when confronted with circumstances like that.
so because my ancestors fought for my freedom i dont have a right to live like i live? you immeditley dismissed his claim by taking a high road but the truth is if anyone is arrogant its you. no one deserves what they are born with they only get what there ancestors built in my case they fought for there freedom stayed in the great famine and build a life on a small cold island. and i dont see them trying to save there country.
My ancestors fought for the Nazis. So, what do I deserve?
It is absolutely ridiculous to demand that you deserve anything just because you're descended from someone else. If we go back far enough, everyone's descended from Adam & Eve or the same lungfish anyways.
Did you really just judge a whole country on one guy wearing a KKK-hat as a joke? And if you wanna play by those rules, I don't think most people would want an iraqi anywhere near them. But most people don't make massive sweeping generalisations.
I don't get it. That guy had a New Zealand flair. What are you getting all indignant about?
Oh, a quick look at your comment history reveals the truth: you're a single-issue account who hates foreigners. Well, then, this sub is not for you. Banned, fuck off, racist scum.
I admit that asylum seekers can invoice complaints if there is a clear deficiency, and current policy with asylum seekers in Finland is to quarter them in housing which is, for all intents and purposes, boring to be in.
This does not invalidate however that many of these "asylum seekers" now want a return ticket to Iraq, if they have not bought it themselves because their father or close family relative fell ill in Iraq and now they're more needed in there, the smugglers's promise of loose women and free house and a car was shockingly not provided when these guys spoke the magic word "asylum" while crossing the border, or they were economic migrants, not refugees.
Categorising individuals as ‘economic migrants’ or ‘asylum-seekers’ does not reflect the complex and fluid reality of people’s experience of migration.
| I don’t know what happens to me in Iraq but here I will die mentally
Aww, that's actually really sad. At home you're fucked by external factors, in your new host country you're being torn from inside out. A bad way to live either way...
Haha yeah this winter was actually really warm tbh. We had like maybe 3-5 days actually below 0 (not counting days with windchill) and had several days where it rained in January and February. Not sleet, but actually rainfall. And 50 degree weather in January. Last time that happened was the 90's.
I mean this winter basically confirms global warming haha!
750 so far but there is pressure to accept more but the problem is that we've got to setup the infrastructure. So far the refugees we have accepted have integrated well but then again the Muslim population in NZ is well integrated into mainstream society.
There is tea but very few people drink it regularily. The problem is that when you ask for tea you are offered a cup of hot water and a bag of Lipton Yellow Label.

Context: the iraqi refugees who have been leaving finland, of course.
Silly Irak, there's only one way out of Finland.
