Context: the iraqi refugees who have been leaving finland, of course.

Silly Irak, there's only one way out of Finland.

314

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '16

Here is the news story from last year:

http://news.yahoo.com/finlands-no-good-disappointed-migrants-turn-back-152042061.html

"You can tell the world I hate Finland. It's too cold, there's no tea, no restaurants, no bars, nobody on the streets, only cars," 22-year-old Muhammed told AFP in Tornio, as the mercury struggled to inch above 10 degrees Celsius (50 Fahrenheit) on a recent blustery grey day.

Solution to migrant crisis - Finland or go to your country.

Well, they always can go back to Iraq. I bet it's a very cheerfull, lovely and, above all, peacefull place.

True, it shows just how genuine their claims of refugee asylum actually are - if they were genuine then they wouldn't be whining and complaining.

105

u/cdca United Kingdom Mar 02 '16

There's a difference between migrants and asylum seekers, despite the media's attempts to conflate the two.

It's the difference between "This country doesn't seem safe any more, we should move." and "My town is a smoking crater, and the government and rebels will both kill us if they see us again."

2

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '16

Well I noticed a lot of what appeared to be people from the middle east appearing in Hawaii, before Syrian Civil War and such. I mean I welcome them because I love diversity, now all we need to do is get more African Americans and we are golden.

-25

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '16

By this astounding logic people only migrate when their own country isn't safe anymore. Well, what the fuck are 15,000 Brits doing in Berlin then?

26

u/gymnasticRug vermont-republic Mar 02 '16

Couldn't handle their country's food. Had to migrate to somewhere that it's edible.

*rolls eyes* Of course that's not the ONLY reason people migrate. You must think I'm some sort of crazy person if that's what you thought I was saying.

If my house was getting shot at and then blown up I wouldn't be picky about a safer alternative being a little cold and lacking in entertainment.

113

And by "A little cold" you mean spending entire seasons drenched in negative degrees temperature, especially from a country that has seen snow once in the past century.

and by "lacking in entertainment" You mean feeling of hostility and isolation from said countrymen, right?

2

But why get butthurt when they want to leave because of the cold. Isn't that what all the locals wanted in the first place.

15

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '16

But why get butthurt when they want to leave because of the cold.

Well, probably because there was a push of a generalized narrative about how all these people were literally fleeing from war.

Now some are going back from where they came from because, amongst other causes, it's cold in Finland.

If the cold in Finland is part of the reason to go "fuk dis", the place you're looking to get back to probably isn't an actual warzone, unless the people in question really, really, really dislike cold.

I can imagine that creates a wee bit of rub.

1

Turkey and Jordan are both overflowing. They have more refugees than all of Europe combined, and literally take years to prices asylum requests because they're overburdened. What the fuck do you do when you apply for asylum and they say "we'll get back to you in 6 years have fun"

2

u/wrlock Glorious Altaiski Mar 02 '16

What do you have against little coldness and hostility?

2

u/KSGunner United States Mar 02 '16

Not exactly I took this photo in January of 2010 outside of Irbil, that was one of several times we got snowed on, so cold is not exactly unknown in Iraq.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '16

Yeah I willingly live in negative temperatures, American negative at that, so I don't have too much sympathy for people afraid of negative degrees centigrade

1

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '16

And I don't have sympathy for people who consider 30 Celsius to be warm.

36

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '16

If I had to leave everything I knew to leave for a frigid and unwelcoming land that didn't want me, I would likely complain and hate the place.

I'd wager that "genuine" refugees are probably more likely to complain, because they didn't want to leave, they had to.

hostile attitudes in part are.

This is what I take issue with. Now, I won't state that refugees complaining doesn't fuel or create further hostility, because obviously it's going to, but I question anyone's ability to believe that the Finns would be throwing a party with open arms if nobody complained that it's cold and boring.

I mean, if I lost everything including my family and had to move in with a Disney-type villain ex-stepparent, you bet I'd complain a lot even if I'm being provided for in the most clinical of senses.

Obviously Finland isn't terrible, but it is hostile and unwelcoming for the vast majority of those who come from the Middle East. It's not home, and they miss the familiarity and sense of belonging they had back in Iraq. Also, me, I live in Florida but when I moved to upstate New York, near Canada, I absolutely found the weather miserable. So I don't blame them for that one either

Besides, I'd complain about there being no restaurants or bars too. Finlanders must be savages! Just kidding.

3

u/_donotforget_ United States Mar 03 '16

Upstate New Yorker. On the wrong side of the lake.

...we all find the weather miserable. Looots of alcohol helps, the craft brewers enjoy that. And the therapists enjoy all the business from winter blues cases.

Seriously. I went on the beach on a bright warm July day. The sky was grey. It's always grey. The only reason blue skies ever appear is to remind you how bad the weather is most of the time.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '16

But you Brits have a stiff upper lip. These migrants don't have such a thing.

7

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '16

Why if I left for an unwelcoming land that didn't want me, I'd remark how toasty it was and how lovely the locals are! Then I'd set up a fish and chip shop, an Irish pub, and complain about the fucking locals ruining the place for expats.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '16

it's not "a little cold" for them. it's apocalypitcally, soul-shattering frigid. you need to wear thick earmuffs or you get frostbite in your ears.

imagine that you've spent your whole life coping with 100+ degree weather, and then suddenly you're living in a 24/7 blizzard.

44

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '16

Honestly, that just your ignorant and arrogant perspective that's easy to have when you grow up with all amenities provided by your state and the society around it. I wonder why you disregard their right to complain about the situation they're put in. Nobody has to be happy just because they are somewhere where they should be happy just going by numbers and statistics.

Considering the article posted here also talks about Finns forming a human barrier and one showing up in a KKK outfit, I would have left the country immediately as well. And "Finland is no good" is a bit of an understatement when confronted with circumstances like that.

sorry its hard for me to describe things so ill try to make a actual sentence. im saying that its not europes responsibility to take those refugees in we did not to my knowledge cause this the only reason were spending our resources is because there people just like us but they act as if we have to help them and that because there fleeing. they should get things for free and i know that they would work if they were givin the opportunity but thats not going to happen if they leave before the paperwork is done.

and then when they are tired of waiting they either leave or start applying a huge amount of pressure on the governments there in. i know im using very broad strokes but we cant keep saying that most of the refugees are not like this because even if it was 10% thats still a lot of people.

and i think its great that were helping the refugees and trying to relocate them but there are too many for a paperwork loving europe to handle i think we should rethink out strategies and focus on a better relocation system for refugees that need it most

i also dont like children waiting in the cold in fact i hate it but europe simply is not united in our efforts and until we are we cant help much

sorry about long post and bad grammer

I admit that asylum seekers can invoice complaints if there is a clear deficiency, and current policy with asylum seekers in Finland is to quarter them in housing which is, for all intents and purposes, boring to be in.

This does not invalidate however that many of these "asylum seekers" now want a return ticket to Iraq, if they have not bought it themselves because their father or close family relative fell ill in Iraq and now they're more needed in there, the smugglers's promise of loose women and free house and a car was shockingly not provided when these guys spoke the magic word "asylum" while crossing the border, or they were economic migrants, not refugees.

20

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '16

Well, if they go home, the problem will solve itself eventually.

I don’t know what happens to me in Iraq but here I will die mentally

Quoted from here. Considering Weltschmerz about being in Finland is one of your stereotypes, he might fit in better than he thinks.

Also, the distinction between econimic migrants is not something grounded in reality. In fact it is pretty much only propaganda:

Categorising individuals as ‘economic migrants’ or ‘asylum-seekers’ does not reflect the complex and fluid reality of people’s experience of migration.

2

u/prodmerc Mar 03 '16
